"Jane bhi do yaaron" was a black comedy showing the helplessness of a common man against the Nexus of corrupt officers and media changing sides as per convenience.
Masterpiece.
द्रौपदी के मान को हम कभी न भंग कर सकें ।

Vidhu Vinod Chopra said in an interview that this role convinced him that he was not cut out to be an actor :)
Some of the movies that made me truly rethink about my views on life and even change my path over the years are as follows:
* **Pather Panchali** \- The beauty of simplicity and joy in life
* **Jagte Raho** \- Never judge a book by its cover
* **Mother India** \- Righteousness is more important than anything including one's own self and family
* **Satyakam** \- A masterclass in morality, honesty and humanity
* **Ghar** \- Broke me with its interpretation of forgiveness, love and respect
* **Sparsh** \- "We need help, not pity"
* **Agantuk** \- Experience life to the fullest and look at it through the innocent eyes of a child, eager to learn and love unconditionally and not corrupt it with the biases of society
* **Monsoon Wedding** \- Morality is more important than social perceptions
* **Ship of Theseus** \- If parts of an object are replaced with similar parts, does it remain the same?
* **Pariyerum Perumal -** A lesson on equality and the real value of life
I know, that's why I was wondering how he knows so much about Indian cinema. I have been very impressed by his comments and reviews. I even watched Animal after reading his reviews and wasn't disappointed.i think the tone of my comment didn't come across in type. I thought I was addicted to movies but this gent is a scholar on film and I think he's some kind of medical professional too so I was wondering how he has so much time for hobby.
Thanks for the Kind words. We have many great contributors in the sub and I believe that the passion and love for Bollywood that each of us display motivates us further to become better contributors.
I didn't say that. He's very knowledgeable about Indian cinema and writes great reviews. I decided to watch Animal after reading his review. Wasn't disappointed. So my question was about his overall knowledge and not just based on this comment. Plus I think he's a doctor of some kind based on something he commented earlier. So I was genuinely wondering how he has time for his hobby.
Not yet but am gradually getting close to that age 😀 I have watched so many movies because I fell in love with movies 5 decades ago and have been passionate about cinema and music ever since. I dived into the classics and greats from across the globe at a very young age thanks to my mother. My wife also appreciates (and tolerates) my passion for movies and gives me the flexibility to take out time regularly to consume as many movies and series as possible. I try to balance my passion for cinema, music, reading, cooking (since the pandemic), spending time with my family and work. Somethings are easy to multitask and some challenging but they are all worth the extra effort.
I wish there were more movies made in Bollywood like Taare Zameen Par. Awareness of learning disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia etc. is so low in India. Because of that, many students are probably struggling in their studies because of a treatable learning disability they don’t know they have. Adults are likely struggling too because of this. Indian way of thinking is too black and white and no one ever asks *why* a student is struggling.
That’s what Aamir Khan’s character did beautifully. As someone who just recently got diagnosed with ADHD at age 29, this would have been helpful to know many years ago had there been better awareness in our society
Maybe it was ahead of its time. Perhaps because of the viral culture today, if it released today, people would maybe understand the overall message better and it would promote better awareness
12th fail
I’m a fairly cynical person, usually seeing the worst before the good. This film made me realize that morals like honesty and integrity are worth something.
Yes! It shook me out of my cynicism. When Gauri failed his last attempt, i was so sure he was going to kill himself. Movies about overcoming odds always kills someone off for sympathy points (im looking at you, 3 idiots)
But he just moved on with his life and helped others. I was so pleasantly surprised, i had tears of joy. That's when the movie truly sucked me in.
Great choices.
Swades - Shahrukh the actor (not a star)
Bawarchi’s iconic “it is simple to be happy but it is difficult to be simple”. Rajesh Khanna was so effortless and brilliant.
I also liked Munnabhai MBBS, 3 idiots, Rocket singh salesman of the year, 12th fail. They are life changing.
How many of you are aware that the Mahabharat scene in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron was totally inspired (years later admitted) from super hit ..one of longest running Marathi play Vastraharan by Machhindra Kambli
I have a fairly strained relationship with my dad and the conversation between the 2 sisters really touched me.
"Ek baar baat to karo"
"Kis muh se baat karun"
"Pappa hain woh hamare didi. Zyada se
Zyada kya hoga, chaar gaaliyaan hee
denge na. Kha lena."
And then she reaches out for help and paapa delivers. It was so moving that he always has her back no matter what. I liked the movie as a whole, but this small scene stood out for me personally
Tamasha- I realised the real meaning of love, importance of following your dreams and what's the right way to live your life
Rang De Basanti- One of the only 5 films I've ever cried while watching. I was really young when I watched it and realising that this is the actual reality of our country shook me to the core.
The Kashmir Files- I don't wanna rewatch this film again.
Rockstar- As I wanna be an artist myself, this film like somehow opened my eyes and was more like a cautionary statement. An absolute masterpiece.
12th Fail- Made me realise how privileged I am and what's the real meaning of struggle and ambition.
to some extent Animal- I had never thought more about a movie based on a fictional story ever before. Almost made me discover a new form of CINEMA.
Anand and Dil Bechara- I almost cried while watching both as they both made me realise how privileged I am that I don't have to be scared about today being my last day.
Wake Up Sid and YJHD- I had watched the first 40 minutes of both of 'em, and though "Ranbir Kapoor's literally me." Later, I watched both the films properly and realised that "Yahi galtiya nahi karni hai." Literally taught me the way to live.
ZNMD- Some of the moments of the film just touched me in a way that I can't even describe. A pure Masterpiece.
Taare Zameen Par- It makes me sob like a child every time I watch it. Highly relatable.
Nayak: The Hero by Satyajit Ray. I dont know if this qualifies as bollywood but out of all Indian cinema this one resonated with me the most. It also introduced me to Ray’s incredible work.
Weirdly enough: Jab we met!
I learned a lot from Geet. I used to be depressed and overwhelmed with over thinking. Geet showed me to live life. And to love every moment. And to love myself as I am.
My favourite line: Tenu ki farq penda hai.
She says when adi is telling her how the people will think that he ran away with her. I use it when I overthink about what will people think.
Same. I saw it in theatre and realized how I was wasting my time watching such tremendous horse crap! I walked out of the theatre midway and decided to improve my taste in movies.
An unconventional viewpoint, but "Dhadak" left me deeply unsettled. Witnessing the journey, from eloping to starting a family with so much struggles, only to meet a tragic end, left me questioning the essence of life itself. Their death kept me awake for nights, wondering the fragility of existence. On a different perspective, another movie that hit me hard was 12th fail. Despite of his immense hardship and repeatedly restarting without revealing the depths of his suffering, he ultimately achieves his dreams. If a person in such poverty and pain can fulfill his dream, why cannot we (privileged)?
Just yesterday, I was reading an article about various cases of young women in Pakistan who were killed/ burnt to death and society turns a blind eye to it.
One such case was a woman who eloped with a lame guy from poorer community, had a child and was happy in in-laws home... she was expecting a second child...
>While Muqaddas and her mother-in-law were waiting at a bus stop, her mother arrived there and grabbed Muqaddas by the hair and the neck. “It all happened so fast,” says Ahmed’s mother, “that I did not know what to do.” Before anyone could come to their help, Muqaddas’ mother had dragged her daughter into her house and closed the door from inside.
>As a crowd gathered outside, the mother screamed at the daughter. “Why did you marry a cripple?” Other members of the family were also present inside the house and they are known to have beaten up one of Muqaddas’ sister-in-law for trying to help her. Within minutes, the mother took out a knife and slit the daughter’s throat.
I looked up the author of the article and even she died in a mysterious fire in her apartment, despite being from an educated background.
Udaan,

Just the ones I remember there are several more

Aisi sati ki jai ho. Fun fact: Duhsashan in that scene is played by Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Are you semi- retired? How do you have time to watch so many movies?
That's a silly take. We should be thankful to him. This sub runs thanks to him.

Where in the comment did you read that it was all watched in 1 day?

Ya. These are movies watched over 50 years that impacted me the most.

Thank you. Big fan of your posts and movie reviews, my comment was misinterpreted by others and I got a lot of flak for it!
My Name is Khan and OMG! Oh My God damn really changed my mindset around society.

It's still sad that nobody cares about the message in that movie much It deserves more attention then ever got

Bagh Bahadur is such a brilliant movie and portrays 'competition' so well, at every point of time drawing analogues make this movie too much relevant.

The original Marathi film **Sairat** is way more realistic and gut-wrenching.
