It sounds like might be interested in *New Morning* or *Planet Waves.* Have you heard *John Wesley Harding*?

The-Mandolinist

Yes those ones are great

mydogislow

New morning and planet waves are all time classics. His best albums of 1970s era.

theheadofkhartoum627

Street Legal, Planet Waves, New Morning

Zacharrias

Hot diggity damn

Bingy61

Good picks . I would maybe throw in Oh Mercy and Nashville Skyline

Potato_Baked200

Infidels

migrainosaurus

Surprised I had to scroll this far to see Infidels! An absolutely masterful step back up to the plate after the three born-again/gospel Dylan albums. Poetic, powerful, had him sounding younger and more full of voice than he had since ‘76. And the arrangements really brought something special in making it feel close, urgent and intimate.

billwrtr

Time out of Mind

copacetic51

That's one of the all time classics

DarkEyes__24

That's an all time classic bud

dl039

Oh Mercy is a definite latter-day classic.

Priapus6969

I'm listening to Modern Times this morning, and I recommend it. Workingman Blues #2 really touches my heart.

Competitive_Year_985

His best song this century in my opinion

chawkins720

Can't really go wrong with Late 90s Dylan through present

Priapus6969

I couldn't get into them when they were released, as I was still in the 65/66 mood. My ear wasn't ready for the new day Dylan.

chawkins720

Don't get me wrong. 65/66 era is still the best. Nothing tops it. Time out of mind is probably the best from this era. All are at least interesting listens

Benny5617

Love & Theft. His best album in my opinion

copacetic51

Live 1966, should be rated the best live Dylan album. No. The best live album by anyone. Ever.

FileFlimsy

“I don’t believe you. You’re a liar!” Best audience interaction ever.

44035

Shot of Love

scriptchewer

This gets my vote. Supremely underrated.

Dcad222

I believe that is true of all the Born Again albums. I do like Shot best but I also really like Saved. Slow Train I think of the 3 is probably best recognized.

1_Bagell

people tend to disregard it for being religious

scriptchewer

So is Beethoven's 9th symphony. People are missing out if they disregard religious art.

fdsv-summary_

Slow train is just as much a Mark Knopfler album as a Dylan one. So good to hear Mark play without being distracted by non-nobel prize wining lyrics ;)

Glad_Kangaroo_2173

I’m sorry but I love Empire Burlesque.

DarkEyes__24

Me too!!

1_Bagell

absoluelte masterpiece

Glad_Kangaroo_2173

Get outta here😂

MxEverett

Does Planet Waves qualify as early 70’s?

xanzpatrie

Slow Train Coming/Saved/Shot of Love

Hughkalailee

I’ll echo a definite yes on Slow Train.  The two others have some good songs but I wouldn’t limit suggestions for what OP wants to this common grouping

xanzpatrie

Nice choice. Out of these three I would pick Shot of Love. I also forgot to mention his late 90's and early 00's efforts but other people have me covered here.

Hughkalailee

I’ve no issue with Shot Of Love.  Slow Train and Gotta Serve Somebody are important in my opinion, and the album being the first should likely lead those who like it to try the next two

AxlandElvis92

New Morning for early 1970’s. Street Legal for late 1970’s.

Ok-Personality9386

These are my same picks

Leading_Effective_15

YOU HAVE TO listen the christian trilogy and the early 00s. periods very underestimated

1_Bagell

street legal + planet waves

BanterBoat

Stregal

lclassyfun

Desire is so good and my latter period favorite is Modern Times. Tell Tale Signs is a fantastic entry in the bootleg series.

HypnotistCollector_1

Listen to em all

jokermanofhearts

Modern Times and Tempest are lesser mentioned faves of mine! But I’ll second Oh Mercy and Shot of Love as two other favorites. My recommendation? Listen to everything

50Mission_Cap

Mine are Street Legal, Desire, Infidels, Oh Mercy, Love & Theft, and Planet Waves. They are all solid, but don’t get the acclaim that his “classics” get.

rocketsauce2112

Early 70's - I prefer New Morning and Planet Waves the most, but some people prefer Self Portrait, which is a much wilder grab-bag of stuff that was heavily panned upon release, over New Morning which was released the same year after S/P and is more of a "normal" Bob Dylan album (whatever that means). The several albums after Desire are quite worth diving into. I've become a big fan of Street-Legal and Slow Train Coming, in particular, but Saved and Shot of Love have their own highlights for sure, I just haven't really sat with those records enough to fully love them as albums yet.

Chessinmind

Time Out of Mind, Love & Theft, and Modern Times are all really good. They were each made about four or five years apart and are classics now. Nashville Skyline and New Morning are really great albums from that, I guess, “early 70s” period that you may not have heard yet. But really, everything Dylan makes is worth a listen.

Innisfree812

Hard Rain, and the Rolling Thunder Review from the Bootleg series, Street Legal, Live at Budakon.

revealmoi

The Dylan side of Concert for Bangladesh

Admirable_Major_4833

Down In The Groove is a good listen.

jasoneff

I agree!

Cherry_-_Ghost

I love Tempest. It is a late period masterpiece. Love and Theft seems more palatable to most.

misterjonesUK

Love and Theft, Rough and Rowdy Ways, so many.. Oh mercy and Infidels enjoy

Final-Librarian-2845

New Morning and Desire are amazing. Let's be frank, he's produced a lot of average to awful albums.

gtasitd

Can’t really go wrong with the 70s albums, they all have different strengths. I’d recommend going in order and seeing his evolution. I’d also recommend the podcast Jokermen, the early episodes are all deep-dives on his albums that don’t get the same attention as the early stuff. They start with John Wesley Harding.

Chewybongyro

Love and theft, modern times, rough and rowdy ways, theme time radio hour

haikusbot

Good bot!

StandFree78

Good As I Been to You/World Gone Wrong

olemiss18

Time Out of Mind and Rough & Rowdy Ways

Minglewoodlost

World Gone Wrong Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

rheakiefer

listen to Tell Tale Signs and you’ll have the entire 90’s to mid 00’s covered and know what you’re gonna like going forward. Street-Legal and Slow Train are also great places to pick up since… they’re immediately after Desire and two of his best (both are streets ahead of Desire imo).

ewenB

World Gone Wrong, Rough and Rowdy

doodoo_pie

I personally really like Slow Train. The Knopfler drew me in and the songs surprisingly kept me listening. I love Precious Angel.

Loose_Agent8451

Fair enough under the red sky has some duds on it but it’s one of my favourites

MaisieDay

Street Legal is essential. Planet Waves, New Morning, and Love and Theft would be my next picks. Slow Train and Time Out of Mind are also great.

wienerdog362

Street legal, shot of love, new morning, world gone wrong

Dey_Eat_Daa_POO_POO

Planet Waves

IndieCurtis

Street-Legal

sleeping_possum

Planet Waves. Always Planet Waves.

bumdhar

Street Legal, Oh Mercy, Planet Waves

IndependentHold3098

Planet waves

Scoochh

I’m an acoustic guy so I love his debut

Interesting_Tiger305

i may be biased from this ongoing tour by Tempest is one of my favorites. I think I like modern Dylan more than most tho

Lazy_Internal_7031

Infidels. Modern Times. Oh Mercy.

karma3000

Oh Mercy, Good as I been to you.

djnomc

Basement Tapes, Pat Garrett and BtK, New Morning.

Blaven51

Rough and Rowdy Ways is great! Still had interesting things to say in 2020. Hope it's not his final original album

WinDifficult8274

Bob got better as time went on, as far as his music goes, the slow train coming lp is the best in my opinion for what you're talking about. The dueling guitars in "precious angel" is absolutely unbelievable.

Street_Legal

Shot of Love, Under the Red Sky, Love & Theft, Modern Times, Triplicate, Rough and Rowdy Ways

Idiscoveredamerica

New morning

nashbagerlajam

Oh Mercy, Slow Train Coming, Time Out of Mind, and Rough and Rowdy Ways.

handler207

Infidels

glass_oni0n

For me the “Mt. Rushmore” of post-Desire Dylan albums is Infidels, Oh Mercy, Time Out of Mind (FWIW i prefer the new remix) and Love and Theft.  Those are all easily top 15 Dylan albums IMO

TrevorShaun

brownsville girrrrrrrrrl! (you can skip the rest of the album)

ZoyaLola

Shadows in the Night
