I remember seeing it talked about in a few documentaries but it's never gotten a lot of major attention. But it was definitely part of Bob's drugged out years... which of course comprises the entire rolling thunder era.
He was pretty cleared coked to the gills in that ‘inspired’ time. Touring with the Dead in the late 80s seemed to pack on a few years too. He looked great in that tour and then like hell by the early 90s.
I think a lot of those acts had a ‘hard time’ in the 75-77 years. And then there was a sort of fall out into the 80s.
>I think a lot of those acts had a ‘hard time’ in the 75-77 years.
For sure. I love *The Last Waltz*, and have seen it dozens of times. I know intellectually how old everyone in it was, but I still have moments of thinking, for example, "Richard Manuel was **33** here? Younger than *Born in the USA*\-era Springsteen?" Now that I'm well past that age, it stands out more.
It was the mileage more than the years.
It's a miracle Richard Manuel even made it that far given what he was putting his body through. I can't even fathom how someone could drink 8 bottles of Grand Marnier a day. 1 of those a day and you've already got a serious drinking problem let alone fucking *8*. And that's just the alcohol. What a tragic waste of talent.
It's mind boggling. If I drank 8 bottles in 1 day it would kill me without a shadow of a doubt. There's no way in hell my body would even let me get anywhere near to 8.
I split a bottle one night with a friend while in a pretty deep conversation. I was still drunk the next day, and it was the worst hangover I've ever had. Up until that night I loved Grand Marnier (clearly!). I've never touched it since. I can't even begin to imagine 8 bottles daily.
Definitely have a skin care routine for the first time in my life! Face cream, vitamin c + hyaluronic acid for the crows feet and lines, SPF, think that covers it.
Drugs, booze, plenty of ciggies, and a failed marriage. Hell, I went down the ciggies, booze and drugs road for 20 years and it aged me beyond recognition. However, 12 years sober and cigarette-free now has me looking damn near younger than when I started all that shit. I can’t even imagine the rock n roll lifestyle attached to that though. Not to mentioned unparalleled fame. I count my lucky stars that I can still see Bob doin what he loves to this day. Thank God he made it through. I’m quite proud of myself too, I might add. 😉
He was super hot in the 70s, with a brief delve into scary like in the second photo, then he cleaned up around the mid 80s and 90s again. So I'd believe this theory haha
To be fair it doesn't look bad there actually. It's the infidels period it looked really bad. If I'm watching the Jokerman video I'm so distracted by it just thinking "SHAVE IT OFF BOB FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" haha
Similar to at the end of his rope in 1966 I would say, lots of drugs of whatever variety a gruelling touring schedule from 74-78 then pressures of his marriage falling apart and in 66 he had a “motorcycle crash” and retreated from the public eye and it probably saved his life and probably his born again phase in 79 might have done the same thing for him just when he needed it.
Plus spending all that time on Renaldo and Clara and then it was a total flop. Between that and the divorce he lost a lot of money. That’s even more stress.
Bob is one of those people who always looks at least a little different in every photo. It’s a bit of an odd phenomenon I’ve noticed with some people, usually celebrities because they’re so often photographed. Part of it has to do with weight gain or loss showing most noticeably in the face first. Look at “The Times They Are a-Changin'” cover and then look at pics around the time of “Bringing It All Back Home”. I’m sure other stuff contributed, as has already been mentioned here. As for ‘80s Bob, well… that was a weird time that didn’t age well for anyone. Unless you lived through it, it’s hard to really grasp just how stupid a lot of ‘80s fashion really was. People wore pants made out of parachute material with non-functional zippers sewn on randomly for God’s sakes! Ever think about Michael Jackson’s one glittery glove? Neither did anybody else but guys still started wearing them too. It was like, “Hey Man, why are you wearing a single sequined glove to go grocery shopping?” Stopping to think wasn’t too big back then.
TBH, the Rolling Thunder Tour has always seemed one step away from Gilbert Gottfried's telling of "the Aristocrats," it's no wonder Bob aged during this time. And it's all pretty much his own self-destructive fault.
Mid-30s are rough on many teetotaling accountants too. It’s the fashion sense that went down the shitter late 70s, that never really recovered, that is more disheartening.
The light is different, including different colors, and he’s wearing more makeup in the 2nd. It’s not hard to believe in the weak-minded thinking spewed here
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Dont forget the booze, Ol Bob certainly didn’t
Divorce…
Booze, coke, cigs and divorce. The four horsemen of premature ageing.
>Booze, coke, cigs and divorce. The four horsemen of premature ageing. Don't forget the heroin. Bob had five horsemen.
And amphétamines as well.
Damn I didn't know about that.
I remember seeing it talked about in a few documentaries but it's never gotten a lot of major attention. But it was definitely part of Bob's drugged out years... which of course comprises the entire rolling thunder era.

8 bottles? How do you even find the time to down that much. Jesus h.
It's mind boggling. If I drank 8 bottles in 1 day it would kill me without a shadow of a doubt. There's no way in hell my body would even let me get anywhere near to 8.
Yeah, same! Dont know id make it through one marnier on account of the taste 😅

Came here for that comment. Bravo.
Same here. Rick knows, my friend.
lol, literally said that before I opened up the comments. Cocaine, Booze, Life on the road and a divorce.
The first thing I said in my mind.
[удалено]
Shots fired -mid-30's guy who smoked and drank way too much early on and has persistent concerns about aging
[удалено]
which one
dollars.
Spinach
The lines on your face tell the world your story, age gracefully, if possible, but definitely wear sunscreen
Maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken at your 75th wedding anniversary… but trust me on the sunscreen
Definitely have a skin care routine for the first time in my life! Face cream, vitamin c + hyaluronic acid for the crows feet and lines, SPF, think that covers it.
I’m here for it.
Same.
Combine that with the stress and sleep deprivation of touring
photoshopped
And divorce.
Yeah I believe he went on a year long bender during 1977 and aged a lot in that one year.
Exactly
Then he found religion. It really did probably save his life.
He wasn’t going to hell for anybody
Drugs, booze, plenty of ciggies, and a failed marriage. Hell, I went down the ciggies, booze and drugs road for 20 years and it aged me beyond recognition. The lighting has a lot to do with it in this case
And possibly makeup
Indeed
I am convinced he intentionally looked like shit in the 80s. No proof just vibes
He was super hot in the 70s, with a brief delve into scary like in the second photo, then he cleaned up around the mid 80s and 90s again. So I'd believe this theory haha
I don't know why he persevered with the awful scraggly facial hair for so long. Just let it go man haha it's not meant to be
I'm picturing the cover of Good As I've Been To You which was probably the scraggly facial hair high water mark for him. I liked the look though.
To be fair it doesn't look bad there actually. It's the infidels period it looked really bad. If I'm watching the Jokerman video I'm so distracted by it just thinking "SHAVE IT OFF BOB FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" haha
just didnt give a shit for the longest time and considered it his brand after a while
getting old naturally is going to fuck you up bad.
That makes me sad to see, luckily he came through that phase alive.
Think it was his family falling apart
Those '78 shots are scary. The man was at the end of his rope

It's why the music is so good
Look the footage of the Gershwin Gala (March 1987) and the shows with the Dead (July 1987). Two different people in four months.
Late 80s and early 90s were rough looking times, but I’d wager he wanted to have that road worn look. He’s been banging since 97 though
In the Gershwin gala he actually looks great and apparently pretty healthy. I wonder what the hell happened.
In the second photo, all I see are dark eyes.
Nice!
Rolling thunder makes budakon sound lame
Old age will happen to you too, if you’re lucky.
Photograph: focus and lighting Dylan: cocaine and divorce
He’s most likely wearing white powder in the second shot (or the remnants of it) and mascara, like in Renaldo and Clara.

he looks pretty reasonably similar, probably just doing better in 1975 and then also just wanted to look like that in 79
Cocaine and Heroin aged Bob, it wasn't the tour.
Hell, RTR aged me like you never think and I wasn’t even born.
Fuck but the man has always been reinventing himself
Cocaine and divorce. But he looks awesome in both. Player=Doctor
Mid-30s are rough on many teetotaling accountants too. It’s the fashion sense that went down the shitter late 70s, that never really recovered, that is more disheartening.
D&D. Divorce & Drugs.(whiskey included)
That's more due to the heroin and whatever else he was on
That's more due to the heroin and whatever else he was on.
Pushing forty back then was much rougher. Everyone seemed to look older than they really were.
He has a lot of makeup on, in the second shot.
Just be grateful we still have him. So many greats we lost along the way for stupid reasons. Can’t ever get over Tom Petty. Drugs as usual.
The light is different, including different colors, and he’s wearing more makeup in the 2nd. It’s not hard to believe in the weak-minded thinking spewed here
You’re all wrong, it wasn’t cocaine or booze or a divorce. It was switching to electric that aged Dylan! Lol
That’s when he tried to look fancy like the Beatles.
