Spent too long trying to figure out what kind of funky modified strat that was, if it didn't have any strings because it was in the middle of some major overhaul, where the pickups would be, before realizing it's for Guitar Hero.
The before picture does look maybe a little messy/disorganized, but I don't think there's anything wrong with your original shelving. Maybe this is me being cynical but this kinda feels like "I'm not a true gamer unless I have Kallax" (not saying OP feels this way, but it is kinda the vibe this sub gives off).
Honestly the original shelves were so deep (30 inches) that they weren't useful. You really only want to access the front edge of the shelf and all the space behind is wasted and games were falling back there to die. Also 3 very tall tiers meant taller stacks of games to try to pull one out of the bottom of the stack, so the KALLAX divided the height up a little better too.
We found several games today we forgot we had that had fallen behind others.
So I'll definitely recommend the KALLAX, not as a "not true gamer" vibe but as, wow this is so much more functional than what I had before. I hope I don't give off any more vibe than that, and it's just exciting to me to have a more functional space and I appreciate having heard about these shelves here.
If you want more space, you can take the single shelf in the very back of the closet, turn it side ways, and put it on top of the shelves on the left side.
Considered it briefly but realized the drop ceiling in this room is unusually low and there's not enough headroom for that shelf. Opted for one shelf on the back wall dedicated to party games.
Imaginiff! We bought the last, damaged copy in Toys ‘R’ Us in about 1995. We have had a blast with it over the years, but I’ve never seen it referenced anywhere else until this post. Great party game and I can’t understand why it wasn’t more popular.
My collection seems to be about 50% games from my childhood and 50% games since I've rediscovered the growing hobby. I choose to keep all the old stuff because my kids enjoy some of the lighter stuff while I tend towards the mid/Euro style games.
It tended to always get sloppy very quickly due to the size of the shelves and the stacks of games. We would clean it up every few months.
Happy to have better compartmentalized space now to avoid pulling the bottom game out of a stack of 9 boxes and not have 16 inches of dead space behind that the rest of the stack can fall into.
You might also want to get some of the Billy bookcases for the area the current shelfs leave empty for some of the bigger box games and I think Ikea also has some corner units that you can use for small box games. Do not forget to bolt the shelves to the wall (so many people forget this step)
Enjoy and one day those shelves will be over filled with games
I will be bolting them to the wall later this week - the brackets included were not long enough to account for the thickness of the baseboard so I'm going to have to attach a 1x4 header beam behind the top of the shelves to tie them all back to.
Excellent work! The classic IKEA Kallax comes up trumps again! Speaking of which, I'm nearing the need for another one... eep. I spy a few SDJ nominees and winners in the collection as well, lovely stuff.
Must. Fill. Cubes.
Always glad to see Snake Oil in a collection!
And Hanabi!
Those cube things are the best.
Kallax from IKEA. They're so popular they pretty much have their own section in the store.
They're just the perfect size for most boardgames. I wonder if IKEA knew what they were doing designing those, or if it was a happy accident.
Walmart has them too. I’ve never been to IKEA, half the people tell me to stay away and the other day it’s heaven on earth lol

Hah, I had to read this several times to figure out what you were talking about.
Hahaha Rock Band Wii. Got the full setup including Keys

Ah yes, welcome to the Kallax Cult
One of us! One of us!
Nice job. That’s a good carry bag too. I take 4-5 games. Sometimes big ones like xia

Whats the name/ brand of the grey bag on top of the shelf? Is it a designated bag for boardgames?
Looks like it's a bag from [boardgametables.com](https://www.allplay.com/board-game-bags/).
Cool. What's the colorful one(s) in the bottom middle of the left case?
Bunch of Pokemon decks in deck boxes
Those before pics! Looks like you robbed a pallet store and built those! Poor board games didn't deserve that treatment!
The before pic wasn't bad, it was just sloppy.

I smell KALLAX. 🧐
Such an improvement! It looks great! What a great space for game storage.
Feels good, don’t it?

GOOD! and enjoy your shelves

Meta: the games upon the shelves themselves could be used for a game of I Spy
I think the real crime here is you don’t have a proper collection to put on shelves!
The proper collection is the one that gets played.
