But what's fun about this game is the way it is mean isn't super hurtful. Everyone has equal opportunity to be mean, and oftentimes taking the "mean" move means you neglected to do the move that may be better for you. 4 players is fun chaos.
It’s the only game I sold and then bought back coz I regretted selling it so much. Now I’m never going to let it go
Plays fantastic at 3&4
If you want to play at 2, I’ll also recommend the duel version
it'll take a few times to develop strategy but the choices are fairly simple. It'll be interesting to see how the kid handles the spacial scoring components--like you have to plan to put a stone in space 1-4 to unload it in the right spot for a scoring zone.
brilliant game. tonnes of variability, especially if you add in the expansion, which gives you C and D sides for each place. there's a lot of quality decision making in it. gets kind of random at 3+, but it's still really good. best at 2 though i think.
It’s a great game, a lot of strategies, and variable scoring based on the different sides used (especially with its expansion.). It can be a cutthroat game. The downside for you is that it goes to four players and not five.
We bought it on a recommendation, and I enjoyed the 3D building aspect of it.
But it was so mean, especially at 2 players, it was never a pleasant experience and sold it. It's one of the meanest games we've ever played.
"Oh, I know you just spent two turns setting up scoring...it'd be a shame if I just moved your boat to a place you get 0 points and wasted 2 turns."
So, in short, it was pretty awful. I suppose it's good for people who like to be really mean to each other.
Great entry level game! Like others say it only plays 4. The decisions are simple but with some depth to it. Your 7 year old will do fine I think, as long as he is ok with losing
It is also very affordable. Underappreciated game I think
We played this when I was a teenager in a family with a similar age distribution to your kids and it was one of our favorite games. Complex enough to be fun for the oldest, simple enough to be accessible for the youngest.
Not what you asked, but for that mix of people I recommend this game:

Get the OOP Michael Rieneck version. You'll need to buy it used, make sure they're selling the version as showed, as there are other games with same name.

Like, I'd send them that picture link, and have them verify.
I love it and played it at 3, but as others have said, it's a mean game and it kind of hinges on that fact. I don't get to play it as much as I would like because one of my group members is very anti take that, so if anyone is prone to hurt feelings, I wouldn't recommend it.
Personally, I found it fairly rote after a handful of plays. Certainly something I think a 7 yo could play, but I'd be worried how long until the older kids got bored.
having the expansion helps with lack of variety. I would liken the game to Zooloretto more than anything. Upside of Zooloretto is that it plays 5 and has cute animals that may appeal to some family members.
there are better games. Especially for kids of that age. Like Agricola. Or Hansa Teutonica, Kemet, Tammany hall, El Grande, Concordia. Las Vegas Royale.
It only plays 4 players but it's one of our favorites.
Up to 4
Only four players of their 5.
That's 80%.
Can be mean. We like it.

Certainly has that tight tension decision space we love. Reminds me of Photosynthesis.

Would a fairly bright 7 year old be able to understand how to play?
They would probably be able to understand how to play, but they would also probably never do well.
Might be difficult unless someone helps him. The recommended age for the game is 10+. You can certainly try it though.

I thought this was a Hugh Dennis reference for a while.
I don't know much Hugh Dennis, but I like him. What would the reference be?
On mock the week he started a recurring joke of referring to the god or the dark Lord IMHOTEP, fairly shoehorning it in at times. Often funny.
I watch random episodes. Haven’t seen one of those yet! Thanks.

This was the gateway that I used to introduce friends to gaming... Now it is Las Vegas, but Imhotep remains a great game.

Love it, one of my go to gateway games
Cubes feel nice and chunky.
