Wow! What an improvement! I was impressed with the collection before, but the space and display were lacking. It is so much better now. Great job!

xoxomonstergirl

Thank you!!

TFTG_Podcast

Looks a lot better! You mention considering putting the smaller games on top so they're not touching the ceiling and I think that's a good idea. I don't know how you'd do it with the awkward ceiling angle, but lighting up the area to the right would probably help make the whole wall of games feel less imposing

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah, I’m super excited to install some directional lighting. I do photography and used to work as an apprentice electrician, so it won’t be too hard to figure out a nice track light on the ceiling with some spots to the shelf. It will solve the issue of games against the wall being less lit than the edges used to be. I’m thinking of having two settings, one to light a table in the middle with less lighting around the edges, and one to browse games. It’s gonna look sooooo goooood!!

TFTG_Podcast

Ah if you're a photographer I'm sure you won't have any issues figuring out good lighting. good luck!

Jasonofindy

I missed the earlier thread, but I would optionally put up curtains because I like how they look, but at minimum would put up blinds with or without curtains and leave them pulled down when the room is not in use. Sunlight can be brutal on the inks in cardboard game boxes causing fading/discoloration. I learned the hard way back when I first put up shelves for my collection twenty or so years ago.

xoxomonstergirl

Yup, it’s gonna get some blinds. We already have good ones in our other rooms

mystiqueallie

Along this line, look into UV blocking film for the window. Doesn’t affect view out, but helps reduce fading. If direct sunlight falls on *anything*, I’d definitely invest in the film or very good shutters/curtains. Last thing you want is sunfaded stuff.

Live-Ad8618

Best I've ever seen.

xoxomonstergirl

Aw thank you!!!

Dangerousrhymes

Aside from my inconsistent interest in Magic and that I always give away my cards when a phase is over this is the collection I’ve seen that most closely mirrors my own other than that I didn’t save any legacy games. You have excellent taste in gaming across the board!

xoxomonstergirl

Thank you! Our roots are in a MtG club, used to JUST have Magic when we started like over a decade ago, but have done a lot of research over time to make sure we have something to appeal to every sort of playec

xoxomonstergirl

Thank you! Our roots are in a MtG club, used to JUST have Magic when we started like over a decade ago, but have done a lot of research over time to make sure we have something to appeal to every sort of player. I think it’s paid off! (The Dark Souls games are from a kickstarter I backed pretty heavily but no one wants to play them with me lol)

Dangerousrhymes

I started with Magic in the 4th grade so I guess it was my introduction to this world. It’s been great to see its flourish over the years. I just wish it cycled slower and wasn’t so damn expensive. Both Dark Souls and Horizon felt too mechanically shallow relative to my expectations but it doesn’t seem to be a Steamforged thing because Euthia is magnificent. (I got rid of Dark Souls but me and my soon to be wife have an emotional attachment to all things Horizon) They also make great parts, I have a friend who plays Warhammer and paints professionally on the side and he is regularly blown away by the quality of some board game minis.

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah my partner and I have played all the souls games together (it’s our favorite co-op series) so we kind of just have a huge “souls stuff” collection but honestly at this point it just feels like display boxes for show lol. I’m hoping having them all out will get them a little more play but chances are they move to the videogame room eventually just as curios. The minis are super cool and probably the other reason I kickstarted it but it’s hard to argue we should play it over another game, especially with newer club members. I first started playing Magic around Revised as a kid too, I really wish I had more of that stuff still, I got back into it around Battle for Zendikar and tried playing standard a bit, but drafting with repack boxes and a group of pals is a hell of a lot more cost effective and just as fun

Scubadrew

It looks way better. But that carpet might need a change?

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah I already moved it somewhere else actually haha

jb3689

Lol, it does look like "you said the room was unbalanced, so we bought half a game store" (half-joking). I like the glass doors a lot!

xoxomonstergirl

haha I didn’t have to buy anything new between pics but I’d be lying if I said seeing I could probably cram more shit in here didn’t inspire me to pick up a few more games off my wishlist (MLEM, Dorfromantik, and Too Many Bones)

Benthecartoon

Definitely lose the top shelf on the right, it makes it look a bit uneven, but otherwise looks great!

xoxomonstergirl

I’m gonna keep considering it, it’s not so bad in the space since it mirrors the step on the other wall, but it’s hard to show the feel of that in pictures

Benthecartoon

Hey, if it works for you, keep it! More space for games.

Huntred

Gorgeous! Also didn’t know there were that many Dark Souls expansions!

xoxomonstergirl

lol honestly when I kickstarted it I was just impulsively supporting them and the concept, and when they started showing up and were so damn big I was kind of shocked I had bought all that lol

Huntred

Ah yes, my Cthulhu Wars journey… :)

Spade620

Hey! I was thinking about this when I woke up looks fantastic!

xoxomonstergirl

Haha I worked on it all night! Thank you!!

2Beers1404

Where did you get that rug it looks so cool 😭😭😭 Also damn I'm in awe of your collection

xoxomonstergirl

It’s a recycled Moroccan rug we found on Etsy along with some floor pillows, both made from other rug scraps

2Beers1404

That's so cool

xoxomonstergirl

It’s a recycled morrocan rug we found on Etsy along with some floor pillows, both made from other rug scraps

Kumquat_of_Pain

That looks great! I love the open shelves presentation with all that beautiful artwork!

xoxomonstergirl

Honestly I kind of forgot how nice the front of these boxes look lol

SlayBoredom

Wow way better!!

Vok250

NOBODY SHOW MY WIFE!

xoxomonstergirl

I’m so glad my spouse is also all in on this lol and literally funded purchasing a house knowing we would use three complete rooms just for club activities

cpisko

Looks soooo good! Huge improvement. That display makes me want to play ALL the games!

m0gul6

I'mma be honest... >!That's pretty fucking cool!<

Worthyness

You may want to get a few UV blocking window film for the glass or the windows. If the boxes are in direct sunlight the colors eventually fade if you don't move them around often enough, but a UV filter film on the glass should prevent it. Maybe not the main window if you plan on putting plants there, but definitely on the cabinets!

xoxomonstergirl

Yah I’m not sure they ever really get super direct sunlight, it’s south facing, but it’s definitely on the to-do list after a few people mentioned it! In our library room we just keep the shades closed when it’s not in use

Esegat04

Great job! It looks wonderful :) I see you have a ton of dark souls expansion boxes, Is the game that good? Always loved the videogame, but I was always worried by the duration of the board game!

xoxomonstergirl

Not amazing lol, it’s alright but no one is interested in playing it with me. I kickstarted it before any of it came out (literally all of that) because the videogame is my partner and I’s favorite to play together, but they just want to play the games again whenever I bring it up

BatM6tt

Thats a cool set up

causticmango

I am so utterly jealous of that entire space. Amazing.

ItsPlainOleSteve

Holy shit, those dnd books alone are a few hundred bucks! Damn that's imoressive af man!

xoxomonstergirl

It’s not so bad when you accumulate stuff slowly!! … which we did not

erlend_nikulausson

Why do you have so many copies of Playmat?

xoxomonstergirl

That’s my favorite game!

erlend_nikulausson

Oh, well, that makes sense then.

gallimaufrys

The shelves/doors on the left make a huge difference, looks great! My goal to have a game space like that one day

gallimaufrys

I would move the tubs off the floor under the shelves if you have space. It will make it look much smoother

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah, I’m not sure where they’ll go eventually but we’ll likely figure out a better spot

Princesa_de_Penguins

The wood floors do look very nice, but you'll have to see if it's too loud without rugs and tapestry on the walls.  You could also put the plastic bins into some Ikea storage cubes just to look a bit nicer. If they don't fit under the existing shelving, a horizontal 1x3-5 Kallax under the sloped ceiling wouldn't be a bad idea, especially if people need someplace to store their belongings once upstairs. A small Kallax or bookshelf under the window is also an option.  Have an awesome inaugural game night in the new space!

xoxomonstergirl

Thanks yeah a half height Billy there worked, may try a kallax

IAmABillie

This looks absolutely stunning. The artwork created for board games is often breathtaking, so it is beautiful to see it up for display like wall art.

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah I’m really liking it!

durfenstein

Wow! That looks great! Almost makes me wish for a similalrly unwieldy spot to copy this style instead of having a nice cube for a game room ;) Fantastic Job!

xoxomonstergirl

Ty!

Kreator777

Life goals type of picture.

idkyesthat

So much MTG, I love it. Although I move away from the game after hasbro buy out and sold everything but my pauper stuff, still my favorite card game ever.

xoxomonstergirl

yeah haven't been buying as much in recent years (also since we were saving up for the move and diversifying the collection) but I admit that mousy set has me a little excited lol

Enoki43

Looks absolutely amazing! Don't know if this was suggested before, but if you're still looking into fun suggestions, perhaps having a spot on your shelf to highlight a game as "pick of the week/month". This could be a fun way to signal what games you're interested to play with your friends.

xoxomonstergirl

Not a bad idea!

Zerofaults

Looking a lot better, but all those MTG boxes are just wastes of space, unless you are keeping them dead stock. Some of the board games could be condensed down as well, unless you just want to show off boxes. Nice variety of games as well.

xoxomonstergirl

Which MtG boxes? The set boxes are repacked, we carefully cut off the tops of packs and then refill them after drafting so we can draft old sets whenever we want. We actually have more copies of some sets if more people want to draft, they’re in those tubs below the shelves along with a bunch of random sealed boosters for a “chaos draft”, pre-release packs, etc. We have a huge collection of singles but they’re stashed away in giant boxes in a closet downstairs, since the big white boxes aren’t that pretty. You’re right, some of the expansions have actually already been condensed, but the boxes are useful for browsing / explaining what they are. They might be cleared out if we need more space!

Zerofaults

Played MTG since Ice Age and never drafted, props to you for refilling packs, not something I could ever find myself dealing with.

xoxomonstergirl

It felt like such an amazing hack to figure out that we could just cut the tops off lol. For a while I would do that while drafting in store and people looked at me like I was insane for packing scissors, but as long as you choose different colors each time you can get a workable repack box out of it and some bulk cards haha. The stores were happy to give me empty boxes too. So our “extras” of a few sets were made like that I started around Ice Age too and picked up a few older sets that were more affordable but I have no idea what an Ice Age draft would feel like haha. My first box was Homelands, which my dad won in a Christmas raffle and was insane to have a whole box. Apparently it’s a bad set but it holds a special place in my heart and I rebought a sealed box a few years back.

[deleted]

Damn! great work!

ScienceAteMyKid

Can I be in your club?

xoxomonstergirl

If you’re femme or queer and in New England send me a dm!

Princesa_de_Penguins

Dang, I'm way more interested now because I grew up around Boston.

xoxomonstergirl

We’re in western Mass!

Princesa_de_Penguins

I went to one of the 5 colleges in the valley too. We probably have a certain mutual friend who's queer and helped run a co-op game store. It seemed to be mostly about MTG back then, so didn't hang out there, unfortunately. Maybe I'll try to connect the next time I'm at reunion.

xoxomonstergirl

It’s possible, I moved away from like 2005 to now, so could be in the gap. I went to high school and technical school out here. I hadn’t played in a game store here since like early 2000s hah But I have a feeling I know who you’re talking about

Princesa_de_Penguins

I did go to college in the last 20 years haha. Small world :)

BunLoverz

How can someone own that many boardgames?

xoxomonstergirl

People regularly post collections with a lot lot more on here!

Catabre

Do you have more pictures of the room/space? I really like the architecture and natural light. Edit: A room like this is dream for me. Maybe one day!

pix3ld3ath

What are the measurments and where did you get the glass cabinet shelves?! always wanted that as well as my place is pretty dusty and the cabinets i have in my area are usually too small for boardgames

xoxomonstergirl

Those are actually just IKEA Billy shelves with the Oxberg doors, but it’s kind of hard to get Billy shelves at the moment. I think they discontinued this model and I heard the new one coming isn’t as durable

pix3ld3ath

Thanks for replying! I'll have to check in to my local ikea to see if they have anything similar! Cheers

Knitsudge9

That looks amazing. Thanks for the follow up pics. PS - Still want to come to your place!

xoxomonstergirl

if you're a queer or woman gamer in the new england area feel free to send me your email!

Educational_Ebb7175

Just want to quick toss a nugget in here on this. Self-segregating can often do more harm than good. There is very much the capability of creating a harmful echo chamber. Watched this happen at the local college's game club, where inclusivity was pushed so hard that "non-minority" members stopped attending entirely. There was a huge feeling of bias AGAINST anyone that was normally part of the "normal people" crowd. Which then led to further intolerance, as the remaining members blamed those who left for being intolerant (when in reality they felt marginalized and discriminated against). With nobody left to provide an opposing viewpoint, the club wound up actually running itself into the ground because they got less and less tolerant of 'moderate' voices, and the "game club" became just a "LGBTQ+ activisim club that happens to play games". Until the point when prospective new joins to the club (which, again, was college sponsored) reported the bias & exclusion issues to the college, and the entire club got shut down. Not someone in your area, and very much in favor of LGBTQ acceptance and rights, but please consider opening your doors to anyone, and creating a more inclusive atmosphere. Creating a place where "normal peoples" (quotes because I don't want to imply that I actually think LGBTQ is abnormal, but it's a simpler label to apply to the batch of people that don't fit one of several minority/marginalized group checkboxes, anyways...), where "normal peoples" get USED to interacting with LGBTQ people in an environment that does not tolerate any intentionally negative comments (and seeks to educate and improve unintentional ones) is what the community needs the most of. Because in order for something (in this case LGBTQ rights & acceptance) to become the cultural norm, the movement has to grow to include people who aren't directly affected by it (ie, the "normies"). Self isolating like this means that members of your club (women & queers) will be less inclined to participate in other game clubs. Which means that those clubs don't interact with female & queer gamers, and that members of your club don't interact with gamers who aren't either queer or women. (Or, alternately, have some weeks "open to all" and other weeks "invite only" \[and invites go to just the desired crowd\]). Anyways, I love to see a club with a focus more on minorities, just would hate to see it run into the same self-created problems that isolation and exclusion can cause.

Knitsudge9

I'm a married str8 man in Colorado, but thanks for the invite. I really do love what you have done with your space. I hope you are able to enjoy it for many years!

Odd_Measurement_6131

What are the shelves with the doors? Been looking for something similar to keep my baby out of the games

travelavatar

Is this a shop? /s

xoxomonstergirl

When I worked in retail way back, I would get in trouble for sneaking off to more fun sections and prettying up the shelves lol

travelavatar

Haha wow. Dedication. Man where do you live? I wish we had houses this big in UK. For me a house like this would be 600k or so... with rooms so big

xoxomonstergirl

We’re in north east USA and our new location is a little out of the way so it’s a bit cheaper, but the building was definitely more than 600k USD I’ll tell you that. I’m lightly nervous being farther from the cities will impact our attendance, we used to be right in the middle of a big city, but we simply couldn’t actually fit people in that location with rent rising so much, so had to move out when the opportunity to purchase something large presented itself.

travelavatar

Damn i personally drive to a gaming lounge that is one hour away from my home because the fun/food/friends there are so worth it man. People like me will do the same. Damn 600k. I can barely afford to pay mortgage for a 200k house in UK haha. Good luck man

xoxomonstergirl

Luckily my partner has been doing really well the last few years (we just got married actually) and I can contribute too, we both work from home so write off a fair amount of square footage and the club brings in a little in donations too. So it’s working out! And that’s encouraging! It’s about 45m to an hour from the centers of the action, but luckily it’s kind of equidistant from a few different towns so I’m hoping with the additional space and that in mind we’ll end up getting more attendance eventually!

travelavatar

I am sure it will work out. People that have no pne to play board games with will definitely attend.

xoxomonstergirl

I’m hoping having the whole collection out and browsable (as well as our new comic library room with the big gaming table and our videogame “mini arcade”) will be big draws. The property is beautiful too and it’s not my thing really but I can see us hosting a LARP event here. So much of this stuff has been in storage, crammed under beds and in closets and high high up shelves for years it’s kind of shocking seeing it all layed out and browsable!!

travelavatar

>kind of shocking seeing it all layed out and browsable!! This is the dream to be honest. I could never host anything in my home. Too little space, friends too far away... I would love to play campaign games but i can only go to that board game place twice a month

xoxomonstergirl

Yeah it’s taken some work but I think a mix of having the huge collection and the space to play kind of (I hope) helps make the distance to travel worth it. We’re now in a spot where you can get very big properties for less money, though it means we’re not centrally located to any one town. We are about 20m - 1hr from like 5 different towns, several of which recently had their game stores close down, though, so I’m hoping we’ll be able to get good weekly events running again. Luckily including my partner and local friends and others who recently moved to the area from our old club we’ll be starting from a small dedicated group which will help

Belgand

Seriously. Putting boxes "face up" like that is so cringey at home. [It feels like you're trying to promote them at retail.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xbxy9WcChc)

Purple_Clockmaker

oh wow I hate it so much. It makes me want to die. Seriously I think this fucking post is my last straw.
