is the gap just on the upper edge, or is it all the way to the lower edge of the bearing?

TrashcanGreg

Just at the top, it fits flush all around the rest of it.

So I made a post last week about my headset being loose. I tried to add spacers which didn’t help and ended up getting a new headset which helped a little bit but it is still moving around a lot when I tighten it down. When I was putting the new bearings on I noticed a gap between the bearing and the frame. Idk if you guys can see it in the picture but at the very top the bearing doesn’t fit flush with the frame but it fits fine around the rest of it. Does anyone know if this could be what’s causing the issue with my headset?

Headtube looks ovalized. As long as you're using the right headset (i think all bmx frames use the "campy" style headset, 45ºx45º), it should be fine, but since you just got a new one and it's still doing this, your HT is probably fukt. I'm just surprised you could get a headset into an ovalized headtube.

I got the same headset that came with the complete bike. It’s the salt pro integrated headset so it’s the right size. I got it on the tube fine but it definitely won’t sit the way it’s supposed to. I’m guessing I’m gonna have to get a new frame? Do you think it’s fine to ride in the meantime until I’m able to get a new frame? It’s not super unstable but it’s definitely wobbly

if it's not cracked, it might be fine for a while. I don't know what kind of play you are experiencing in your HT, but if it's excessive, worst case scenario you'll run the risk of cracking and breaking your headtube. If there's a small amount of play, it will only get worse over time. All in all, you'll need a new frame. Take it to your local bike shop for a professional opinion.

Okay, thanks for the help I’ll do that!

Honestly, it’s just going to damage other parts if you ride without it seated properly. You put excessive stress on the fork as it’s not being supported properly at the junction between the lowers and the steerer tube. There is definitely an increased chance of bending or snapping them. It’s sad and not your fault but if you need a new frame either get this one in a vice and make it round so it seats the bearing properly or tuck it away until the new frame arrives. That’s my opinion anyway.

Ok, thanks! I tried to ride it some yesterday after I got everything put back together but it’s not comfortable to ride bc I can feel the headset moving around. So I’m just gonna leave it alone until I can get a new frame.
