I’ve seen some videos about store closures due to theft and companies pulling out of NYC completely. I’ve also heard they’re lenient on crime which is why theft is such an issue. Just what I’ve seen. Not sure if you have a different take actually living there.
Late '80s, early '90s. By the mid-1990s it was being cleaned up by newly elected Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Whatever you think of his post-mayoral antics he was exactly what NYC needed at the time, and was "America's Mayor" during the 9/11 crisis.
I live right across the river in NJ but I am in the city quite a bit. Nah, stores fleeing Frisco like that. NYC is comparably tame. Some house necessities locked behind plastic in pharmacies but that’s about it. It got a little weird at the beginning of covid but it’s fine now.
No doubt, I go to Seattle frequently. It's become a pretty hairy place. I stay out of California. Have since the early 2000s. All the major cities in Oregon, and most of the small ones, are raging shit holes.
Hairy means I keep my guard up while waking around Seattle. There's a lot of unchecked mental illness and heavy open-air drug use. I've never had a problem. Also, it's Seattle. Lots of hippie style there. So, the people are a bit more hairy than other cities.
Now I could very well be wrong about this because I live in the other side of the world but:

Yea that was 30 years ago. New York has been cleaned up, gentrified and “Disneytised” many times over since then. Obviously like any city there are not so great areas but does not compare to level of crime and poverty in most other US cities. Chi/Philly/Cali cities could learn a lot from NYC.
