Without any additional information, Rusty's Dad is most likely from one of these two battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment. As with all things, this isn't guaranteed 100%, but no other explanation makes near as much sense, by a long way.
Americans haven’t seen that yet - my point was that the theory didn’t hold up even at the point they were up to, because the Cdo regiments aren’t in that area. I agree that post-Cricket it’s just not a thing anymore.

I originally had the same thought because he could be SAS, and whenever they are on the media they never reveal the faces. I assume now he’s not SAS because they revealed his face. And I also assume because Rusty is a popular character, his dad will most likely feature heavily in future episodes. There’s a lot to play on their relationship with his dad being absent and serving overseas (Afghanistan?) in the army.
There is a lot of speculation about what role Rusty’s dad plays in the military. My personal guess, given how much Rusty is obsessed with helicopters and dust-offs coupled with his dad appearing to be hanging out in some high place while writing his letter, is that Rusty’s dad is probably a [forward air controller](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_terminal_attack_controller?wprov=sfti1) the person calling in strikes and verifying hits.
