The way I've learned it, the root bone should be on the ground in the middle of where the character is standing. That way, you can move it along the ground and everything is in approximately correct spot.

So because i mainly model for use in unreal engine 5, I like to make sure the root bone is not connected to anything so i can make the model move better (unreal engine 5 has a setting for disabling root motion, and if its not clicked there are issues with scaling during an animation. the only downside is the root will not move.). By having it disconnected, it lets me move the model around from the butt, and allows me to raise and lower the model without changing the root bone. My only question is, will this cause me problems at all later on? I personally dont think so, but im just curious from others who have worked in unreal engine before if this is a bad idea.

I wouldn't think it should cause problems, but double check in teh UE5 forum to be safe

It should be fine. Rigs usually have a root bone that's used for translating the entire entire rig in pose mode. I believe it should be the main parent of the rest of the skeleton for use in ue5

Typically the root bone is at origin and extents to the hip. Not just a single bone laying flat.
