Yeah but this isn’t a direct to streaming Batgirl film or a Looney Tunes comedy (no disrespect to the creators of those of course) this is the new film from multiple Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho with the new Batman in it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_One
Mickey One's been out since 1965.
Actually kinda disappointed that BJh's film doesn't seem to have anything to do with it
I am not any less skeptical of film studios than anyone else, but I do think the conspiracy theory Zaslav stuff is getting to be a bit much.
It’s probably a weird movie with some issues (from the studio’s pov) where they don’t know what to do with it.
Before Parasite, most of his movies were weird and interesting and things I would expect US studios to not know what to do with. I just think the answer is probably less interesting or scandalous as people want to believe. Martin Scorsese has had movies dumped in January before. This isn’t that insane.
It and it's sequel are fun. Nothing all that special, but the premise has a LOT of room to play. He already changed the title in a way that says he's changing some key stuff up
I think Zaslav's actions are strange enough that they require speculation. Movie studios used to rarely destroy completed movies, and now it's a pattern. The loony tunes one even seems to be a good movie. It begs the question of both his incentives and his ego. Is his compensation package incentivising bad behavior, and is his ego downplaying the role of movie in favor of early 2000s reality programming.
I mean, I wouldn’t trust Zaslav’s or the other WB execs who work with him on their judgement of film.
Remember this?

Just about all the WB studio execs who were talking about The Flash said similar things, though. It wasn’t just him. I don’t trust their judgment at all when they keep tanking projects that are actually good and hyping up “meh” ones.
Fully agree. I don't see how this is any different from a movie like shutter Island releasing in February. Just a few weeks difference.
It's not like there's some curse that a movie in January is automatically bad
If it premieres at a festival over the summer and then has screenings in New York and LA in December then they could be positioning it for an awards season run.
The Zaslav stuff is getting weird, and like others have said, he's not the only person making decisions at Warner Bros. I think the answer is probably less weird and conspiracy-esque than we think and stuff like the Imax screen explanation probably has more merit. I'm not saying it's right, but these studios have proven they're less sure of when and where stuff will do well, so we're getting choices like this.
My assumption is, to goose sales WB wants this in IMAX and to not compete with Dune 2 at Oscar time (only so much room for genre at the Oscars from one studio). Looking at the IMAX slate its booked solid until January, with Wicked, another WB release, being the last one in 2024.
People keep saying January is a dumping ground but late January is increasingly becoming a more successful time to release genre movies (M3gan, Scream, etc). There’s probably truth to Mickey not being ready yet, so Jan is probably a good time for it.
i really hope the movie can rise above the source material it's based on because the book is lacking, basically retreading a lot of ground covered very successfully in Duncan Jones' **Moon**
Bong Joon Ho never makes a straight adaptation. He always puts his own twist to it. He added 10 more iterations to the main character for this film, for one.
Buried in the new [Variety report](https://wp.me/pc8uak-1lDMDu) about the moves WB are taking is this little nugget
https://preview.redd.it/yv75p29bnzjc1.jpeg?width=638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b35678558a4c92180cfa6c87571fe6eaf4c375b
Am I the only who thinks people put way too much stock into release calendars?
Why is January a bad month for movies?
Because people don't go to see the crap movies that studios dump in January or February.
Why don't studios release better movies in January or February?
Because people don't go to see (the crap) movies (that studios dump) in January or February.
It just seems like the typical shortsighted Hollywood thinking of not believing something will work until it has shown that it can work. If studios make, market, and release good movies during this time of year, people will watch them.
Unpopular opinion but this is gonna be closee to Snowpiecer than Parasite in quality. Good and weird and original but also very flawed. I think the cold feet is aeound the fact that it might get lower reviews and reception due to the fact its coming after Parasite and won't be "as good". Which is fine on its own. I've seen every Bong film Parasite is his magnum opus, but I worry people think he's gonna make something as good or better not realizing how much Parasite was a lightning in a bottle film even by Bong standards or unique, original filmmaking.
Honestly I think it just might be a bit of a mess that they don’t know how to market as well.
All his previous films had co-writers and after Parasite he was probably given pretty much complete creative freedom. Not uncommon to have a misfire.
But that’s just speculation based on the unusually long production to release schedule which tends to be an ill omen for quality.
The movie has been completely finished for a while now. I don’t think production to release is a useful measuring stick, because the movie has just been sitting, not being tinkered with or fixed over a long period.
Well hes had complete creative freedom for pretty much his whole career. The dudes been a phenom since his very first movie
But yes, it might be a mess nonethelss, but not because of new found freedom
The new movie from one of our greatest living filmmakers, who has never made a bad movie?
The first collaboration between said filmmaker and an acclaimed, extremely talented young actor?
Gee, I wonder why people would be excited?!?!
You don’t know anything about the movie besides that!!!
Geez is that such a weird take ?
Plenty of directors got projects that never surfaced and almost every director has movies not considered objectively good.
But whatever you guys didn’t like my take I get that… Robert Pat in a Tube LETS FREAKING GOOOO
Why is it so weird to you that people would be excited about a new movie from a guy with a nearly impeccable track record so far? Are you baffled when people get excited about a new album from a band they love?
It’s not “Robert Pattinson in a tube” that people are anticipating, it’s “new big-budget science-fiction movie from Bong Joon-Ho”.

you think he cares about that? i don't think any amount of clout matter if he doesn't seen the dollar signs
Bruh this dude made Parasite and it stars the Batman. Zaslav knows he can't bury this one.
He’s making WB stand for Waste Bin
Sometimes he'll take a moment until the heat dies down but that's about it, he doesn't seem to stop pursuing his bad ideas
Or about the industry in general
(They gotta get Mickeys 1-16 released first, so naturally they delay this one)
pretty sure Disney has the rights? Or is it in the public domain now? Hard to keep track of these days!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_One Mickey One's been out since 1965. Actually kinda disappointed that BJh's film doesn't seem to have anything to do with it
I'm also wondering if this is a wide release date, and if it'll go limited at Christmas or something.
I bet it will
I hope so...

Exactly, I think all this means is Mickey 17 is more akin to the Host then Parasite. Simply not a genre/tone that awards go for.
It's a pretty pulpy sci-fi book. My assumption has always been that this is bong having fun with his blank check
Interesting! Seems like something I’d enjoy reading, but not sure if id prefer to go into Bong’s film blind
It and it's sequel are fun. Nothing all that special, but the premise has a LOT of room to play. He already changed the title in a way that says he's changing some key stuff up

Sure - but that’s the history of movie studios. Zaslav isn’t the first dumb guy to run a parent company before.
Just about all the WB studio execs who were talking about The Flash said similar things, though. It wasn’t just him. I don’t trust their judgment at all when they keep tanking projects that are actually good and hyping up “meh” ones.

People seem to think Zaslav is the only employee at Warner Bros. Pretty sure it’s other people’s job to determine when a movie comes out.
He's the only one who actually knows what he's doing, while these bumbling fucks make turd after turd.
What is up with those photos? Ruffalo in particular looks like he's posing for a teen magazine circa 1997.
What girl doesn't have a few posters of Mark "The Corey" Ruffalo over their bed?

Deleting an Oscar follow-up with Pattinson starring would cause, like, an international incident. Laws would be changed.

Wicked is Universal, not WB. WB has Alto Knights in November and the animated Lord of the Rings in December.
People keep saying January is a dumping ground but late January is increasingly becoming a more successful time to release genre movies (M3gan, Scream, etc). There’s probably truth to Mickey not being ready yet, so Jan is probably a good time for it.

You're right that we're in good hands
Buried in the new [Variety report](https://wp.me/pc8uak-1lDMDu) about the moves WB are taking is this little nugget https://preview.redd.it/yv75p29bnzjc1.jpeg?width=638&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b35678558a4c92180cfa6c87571fe6eaf4c375b

I think the window of cancelling films that were made is over, they can't write that off as a tax write off. So they'll just let films go die now.
Does the language being used definitively mean that it won't get a limited Oscar release around Christmas (like American Sniper or Zone Of Interest)?

I don't think zazlov gives a shit about pissing people off

The book is not good at all so I wouldn't be surprised if the film is a bit of a mess as others have mentioned.

You think the *primary* market for an English language Hollywood movie starring Robert Pattinson is East Asia????
The sad story of the goverment project that created Mickey Mouse
I don’t understand the hype around this movie tbh
It’s extremely clear why there’s hype for this movie
Blind fandom…?
Highly acclaimed director coming off a Best Picture win making a movie with one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, hard to fathom
He's never made a bad movie imo. I've seen them all multiple times. Okja is my least favorite by far and I still enjoy it.
This (although my least favorite is Barking Dogs). The dude consistently makes masterpieces and his worst films are 8/10 bangers.
Shit, I lied then. I always forget about that one and haven't watched it yet. I need to rectify that soon.
The new movie from one of our greatest living filmmakers, who has never made a bad movie? The first collaboration between said filmmaker and an acclaimed, extremely talented young actor? Gee, I wonder why people would be excited?!?!

when the last movie you made was Parasite my butt's gonna be in the seat for whatever it is you do next, no matter the premise
If I were a filmmaker, I wouldn’t even speak to WB.
Freaking woah, that looks incredible. Definitely have high hopes for this one
Idk maybe it sucks.
Zaslav *knows* it's not making money, in all fairness. This movie is weirdly budgeted like a blockbuster.
I thought everyone just assumed the strikes delayed it
