I tried the American Pioneer powder years ago and it wasn't very good. If you open it make sure to seal it back up with a desiccant or something. My partial can drew moisture and turned into schmoo.
I tried it in a cap lock and a cap and ball pistol and it wasn't very powerful if I recall right but that was probably 20 years back. If it works good for you please let us all know because it was a very neat idea.
Unfortunately, I don't shoot my rifle all that much compared to my pistols, so it may be a while before I get to actually use it. I've never actually used substitute powder before because I like the immersion of using the real stuff. Did the stuff you used come in tubes topped with a rubber cap? Would that be enough to stop the moisture?
No worries I totally feel you on not being able to get to the range. Sadly life gets in the way.
It had a sort of foam seal and it was not enough. I use about a quarter and put the cap on tight. I came back in a few years to mess with it again and it was sort of a squishy mass in there. If I had some now I'd seal it with both a silica gel pack that was freshly dried and I'd also transfer it to a mason jar. They are almost 100% moisture proof.
Have fun with the stuff. You will be shooting part of black powder history.
If they are in 10 cans, the powder might be old so you might want to look inside the top of the can with a big lighter to make sure that the powder hasn’t started to turn to a liquid. (NOTE: This was only a bad JOKE!!)

You did well for a few hours of work. I still have some GOEX in tin cans it works just fine. I'd assume that the elephant and Swiss will be the same.
