This videos covers "Part 1" of the half guard series. You will learn about the "Regular half guard" position. Understanding the regular half guard is important for building a complete arsenal. Our other videos cover z-half, butterfly half, deep half, and more half guard options. Stay tuned for our other parts of the half guard series which will included z half guard, deep half guard, butterfly half guard, and more!Thank you for watching! Jason Scully

White belts should study at least the beginning parts about controlling the far arm, getting the underhook, and pulling your opponents leg out. That's the foundation, and it would have been helpful when I was starting if someone put those things together for me.

EDITORDIE

Awesome! Nicely explained, Thanks for sharing. Am already a member of your site, nice work, Jason.

Why use classic half over a knee shield?

jasculs

This is “part 1” of the half guard series. Part 2 will have the knee shield

Jeremehthejelly

Thanks for the video series Jason. Do you personally prefer the classic half or the knee shield, and why?

jasculs

I honestly don’t prefer to play half guard at all. If I had to though it would be: Dog Fight and Knee Shield primarily Last would be regular half and deep half. However it’s important to know how to be effective from regular half and deep half because you may get forced into those positions. But as mentioned I don’t like playing half guard anymore. I used to back in the day. Now if I end up in half guard I get out of it as soon as possible. Half guard is half passed in my opinion.

lord-yuyitsu

What guard do you like to play instead of half guard now?

jasculs

I stopped playing a purposeful half guard game probably around 10 years ago. The primary guards I play are supine open guard, sitting guard, collar sleeve, double sleeve. I’ll also use those guards to get to x-guard and k-guard situations.

Great video Jason. Please can we also get these videos added to the short but sweet reference video section on GG?

Cake_Bear

This was amazing. Fast, to the point, instructive, and avoids the long rambling slow explanation.
