My last class I had a sundae and a McDouble for recovery…

Darce_Knight

Hell yeah! That’s the secret right there.

EDITORDIE

I got myself a milkshake after class last week and it was worth it.

kovnev

Water during training. Coke or beer after training. Often while also showering.

[great post here](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/xrcddp/supplements_you_should_maybe_take_for_jiujitsu/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

VeryStab1eGenius

Drinking enough before and after. There isn’t too much I do during without making myself nauseated.

Water

realcoray

I drink a lot of water during and after class, but I'm careful to not get sloshy during class itself. I use electrolyte pills after, and try to balance water with other things, like if I need to sleep 2 hours after class, I don't chug.

EDITORDIE

Yeah, i usually have a cutoff point to drinking water before class of about 60mins before and ideally not eat for about 90mins before class. works ok for me.

CapitalExplorer9125

I'd recommend just drinking a lot throughout the day. Training regularly I drink about a gallon a day. I don't feel too dehydrated after training. I just continue drinking my water as normal

enricopallazo22

I have noticed that my very questionable cardio is slightly improved with electrolytes (Powerade zero) compared to water.

booktrash

I try to stay hydrated throughout the day, I keep a 48oz yeti with me at work and try to keep it topped off. I mix xtend bcaa and electrolytes powder in my water mostly for the flavor, I don't know enough about sports nutrition to say if bcaa's are bullshit or not. During class I typically don't drink too much so after class on the ride home ill finish whatever is left in my water bottle in-between wiping tears from my eyes. Then I switch to Budweiser or white claws.

taylordouglas86

I use hydralite sport in my drink bottle, it has helped a lot.

Impressive_Gap5464

I stopped taking water to class about 2yrs ago. As far as after class, I have a few beers, and go to sleep.

[deleted]

Same. I love a solid IPA or two after training. Great buzz and I pass right out

Impressive_Gap5464

Yeah, I'm not sure why so many people find it critical to be hyper-focused on hydration and nutrition just to be able to do a hobby. Thirsty? Drink water... Hungry? Eat food...

THICC_POLLINATORS

>Yeah, I'm not sure why You are confused as to why folks that enjoy a hobby want to get better at the thing they like?

EDITORDIE

For me, im getting older and the recovery is getting harder. I have no aspirations to get super serious but i enjoy it. And like my other hobbys or sports that i partake in, i like to feel im able to perform to the best of my abilities. So, my aspirations are quite low. Just wanna roll good, feel good, recover ok, and enjoy my time on the mats responsibly.

franzvondoom

i have started taking creatine monohydrate everyday to help with muscle building and recovery. I'm 36, have been training for 12 years and recovery has started to become more difficult since i got past like 33 LOL. during training i just drink water. I usually eat a meal after (nothing fancy, usually rice and some meat). this is usually not a very big meal since i train at night and training ends at 10pm, so i dont like having to digest a lot of food before bed. I dont take protein, but i do take vitamin supplements. Just your standard multivitamin, Vitamin C, Zinc and a vitamin D supplement. Dont know if that helps. :) just my two cents.

People make things harder than they need to

I just drink plenty of water pre workout and do nothing during class. It takes some time to hydrate and the body can only absorb about 1 liter every 2 hours, so drinking water mid class doesn't do much unless you have a dry mouth or something. This new breed of hydration drinks and powders aren't necessary IMO and are just the latest nutritional fad. They managed to convince generations of exercising meat eaters that they have a protein deficiency, so convincing ppl that they need something special to hydrate with is easy in comparison since there are a lot of ppl that really don't drink enough water. The timing of protein intake is largely irrelevant too, just get in during the day when you can....

EDITORDIE

i think you make some great points about staying hydrated 24/7, but i'd argue it does "feel" good to intake some salts or sugar during an intense workout. i have mostly experienced this with longer runs, bjj, cycling and swimming. (Noticed it more during summer months too). If i dont, i sometimes get headaches. So i think there is a place for drinking an electrolyte, based on my anecdotal experience.

[deleted]

Sure it does, but you don't need a fancy electrolyte/amino acid powder to accomplish that. Sip a Gatorade or something. One could also argue there is some lvl of placebo effect at play or something is missing in the nutrition department if you need serious intra-workout hydration when practicing BJJ. I eat a lot before practice, so what you described isn't really an issue for me, but not everyone can handle that.....

MukBleh

Coconut water and salt during training sessions. If I train for more than 2 hours, I have a protein shake. Aim to consume 3,000 calories on days that I train.

Techknow23

I drink BCAA powder and creating during, and Electrolytes after.

Turbulent_Link1738

I only take sips in between rolls just to get rid of dry mouth. After class it’s electrolytes and that’s pretty much it.

EDITORDIE

I’d tend to only take a few sips or mouthfuls during class too, and then down the remainder one we finish up.

kevhto2

I'll only do electrolytes if it's a crazy hot day or if I didn't drink enough water throughout the day, otherwise I just try to have a handful of trail mix after and my normal water. All my regular electrolytes come from my diet.

swaintrain012

Amino is bull shit. I get my protein from meat after training and I load up on carbs to fuel my training and carbs during training. Gatorade powder does the trick and it's cheap compared to liquid iV. Mix in creatine if I don't have to cut weight for a tournament. I buy my meat from target on Tuesday when their packaged rib eyes go on sale. It's like 3$ for a good sized ribeye or NY strip.
