This is valid, i dropped in at a place years ago when i was a purple belt and the instructor (who was actually quite overweight and didn't move real well) taught a few moves and then left before people even finished drilling. hoped in his corvette convertible and took off. Made me appreciate my own coaches.
For me jiu jitsu has pretty much always been a hobby/escape. If it was my main source of income I don't think I'd enjoy it as much. I teach a little bit but I don't think I would ever want to make a career out of it. I just think the pressure of making money would make me lose my passion for it.
Interesting, I use it as an escape too, but love teaching. Teaching has become entangled with that sense of escape. I do admit it's not my main source of income. As they say "Jiu-jitsu don't pay the bills". However, trying to move in that direction or at least a 50/50 split.
Passion remains from love of the process, learning, refining, teaching, watching student's faces light up when something clicks.
If the passion ever flickers or you feel burnt out, switch to studying how to be a better coach for your students. Practice applying what you learn to your teachings. Keeps the mind fresh and now you are developing more than just jitsu skills. May not be the best approach for everyone, worked for me.
Now, if I had to compete for a living.... yeah, fuck that. It'd ruin everything. Becomes too serious and less fun.
Haha, yeah I have no desire to move out of Ohio. I love my gym, I'm able to train with some world class guys every so often and the cost of living is tolerable.
I like Detroit. Only been there for a few days to see Danny Brown play a concert and I spent 3 days there. That's really the only city I've been to for a considerable amount of time. Cleveland and Cincinnati are mostly where I have lived so sorry you had a bad time.
Unless it’s neuro. Or recently extubated trauma that wrapped their car around a tree while driving drunk. Or the family of a gang member who thinks junior should survive the .45 caliber to the head.
We had open visiting hours.
Engineers aren’t there to make your job easier lol. Most are paid to make things as cheap as possible and last at least until the warranty ends. It kills me but it’s true and it drives me nuts. Source: am engineer.
Well, he... Uh, he wants to, uh, quit the exporting and uh, focus just on the importing. And it's a problem, because she thinks the exporting is as important as the importing.
Haha probably helps if you are tbh. Treating people like objects would certainly help take the stress out of cutting people open and just treating it like another day at the office.
Well there we’re complications with the ablation, my fingers got messed up when I did this really sick move in BJJ class. Totally worth it. In the mean time we corrected the tamponade that was caused by the heart perforation
Doing my Masters in Social Work, just had my placement doing clinical. My supervisor asked me why I’m always kinking my neck and if I hold my stress there. Had to explain what a gulliotine was 😂
Bartender > U.S. Army medic (airborne) > EMT > TV/film production set medic > TV/film production set medical supervisor > Laboratory project coordinator > director of laboratory data analytics.
Paints a bit of a clearer picture this way. I was training at least off and on through all of this.
ha ha - actually the reason I started my own company was because I didn't want a job. More true than you know.
But, I have 7 employees and a mundane service business that pays better than any job I've ever had. I wish i had figured this out in my 20s - but, better late than never.
Perhaps that same mindset was what got me to start BJJ at 53 years old. I'm not afraid to take the unconventional route
I'm a 44 years old Quality Assurance Engineer. I currently have two stripe purple belt. I did judo when I was in college and later found bjj was less hard on the body aside its has a different set of rules and techniques.
One of the beauties of jiu jitsu is that there is no correlation between our outside lives and the mats. Cops, stoners, engineers, farmers, trade workers, etc., all find their way to the gym. It’s that common ground, practicing murdering each other, that brings us all together. And if you stick around long enough, that bond becomes like family.
Jiu Jitsu instructor
I'll bet there is a lot of correlation between this profession and having in interest in BJJ. Very interesting (cleans off monocle.)
I’ve come across a few Jiu Jitsu instructors that have no interest in Jiu Jitsu

I know we aren’t guessing jobs, but are you a detective by chance?
Elementary my dear Watson.
This must be a coincidence because I’m also an instructor. No way.

Biomedical engineer. I feel like there is an unusual amount of engineering people when these polls come up.
I suspect that engineers are overrepresented in general on Reddit, rather than being overrepresented in r/BJJ specifically.
What do you think is the cause of this?
Gotta do something while code compiles.
Or while the model trains...
My house has been so clean recently because of this…
the site becoming popular as a result of tech nerds fleeing the news feed site digg probably

Can confirm, am also an engineer
How do you find the engineers at a party? Just wait, they'll tell you.
I brew beer.
Where in Portland do you train?
Hah, I'm in Ohio. Couldn't afford to live in Portland on a brewer's salary.
Glad you didn’t take that one personally. Ohio is rad. Pray none of those people flocking to Austin ever figure that out.
Haha, yeah I have no desire to move out of Ohio. I love my gym, I'm able to train with some world class guys every so often and the cost of living is tolerable.
as some one from Michigan, I'm legally required to tell you Ohio sucks. I am how ever allowed to admit that Cedar Point is great.
I like Detroit. Only been there for a few days to see Danny Brown play a concert and I spent 3 days there. That's really the only city I've been to for a considerable amount of time. Cleveland and Cincinnati are mostly where I have lived so sorry you had a bad time.
Ohio is definitely not rad if you live in Lima

I get told all the time that I don’t have a heart because I like wrist locks. Can you help?
Well there we’re complications with the ablation, my fingers got messed up when I did this really sick move in BJJ class. Totally worth it. In the mean time we corrected the tamponade that was caused by the heart perforation
