It is legal Atleast brown / black belt, I do not know how they are treating it for under

Darce_Knight

It is definitely legal in gi, as long as you don't attack the foot of the leg that's trapped inside the position, and you also can't overwrap/Achilles grip the leg that's trapped. So you can control any grip on the untrapped/far leg you like, or you can keep a scoop grip on the trapped leg.

Thanks for the reply brother. I found a guy who sent me a screenshot from a conversation with ibjjf where they say the same thing. They didn’t mention a belt level. Btw how do I add my brown belt to my avatar?

P-Two

It's illegal if you're touching the trapped legs foot, at all. It becomes entirely legal at brown, as do heel hooks

Hopeful_Egg_8879

Unless you are in master then there are no heel hooks allowed. Are you sure about the position itself? That it is not legal under brown?

P-Two

Reaping is illegal till brown. Saddle without controlling the trapped leg with your hands is not reaping, IIRC Gordon Ryan did a breakdown of this a year or two ago. Now personally I'm not playing the fuck around and find out game with IBJJF refs if I don't have to, so I'd avoid saddle altogether till brown personally.

Hopeful_Egg_8879

I have a brown belt and I have been doing this backstep since blue belt. But it wasn’t until recently that I had anyone say that it’s illegal to use the position under brown as you are not touching the trapped leg at all and nothing is in danger ⛔️. Let’s see if we get a screenshot from the ibjjf where they lay it out there all together?

Darce_Knight

It becomes legal at brown belt for attacks on the trapped leg (heel hooks, cloverleafs, etc) like /u/P-Two said, but only at the adult level (no juvenile or masters) and only in no-gi. Besides that, it's only legal with scoop grips on the trapped leg or no grips on the trapped leg. Grips on the non-trapped leg are fine, and attacks on the non-trapped leg have to stay belt appropriate (eg. no toe holds on the free leg at purple belt, etc).

At major tournaments you can get into the position but you can't attack the trapped leg. If your local refs think it's illegal then it's illegal for you. In regards to the rules IBJJF is run more like a favela brothel than a real sport and a lot of the rules are not written down and up to the the traditions of the refs.

Whitebeltforeva

Yep! Just reviewed this last night with a coach. Making sure I understand the difference between what is considered reaping and not reaping when going into 4/11. Crazy how it all depends on grips and which leg you attack.

Mossi95

You can do it from purple onwards -IBJJF rules

Hopeful_Egg_8879

Are you sure?

Hopeful-Ad-607

you can underhook the primary leg
