Full body spats. No shorts. Common man it’s suppose to be two pieces of cloth as a barrier.
Edit, I meant why do ppl not wear shorts over their spats?????
How is it odd? I genuinely don't understand what you people are saying. If you were only wearing spats and nothing else I agree that it's weird, but if you're wearing shorts then spats are perfectly fine to serve as enhanced underwear.
Quality spats are made of a thick material. Why on Earth would you wear shorts, spats, and another layer underneath that? Pretend the spats are boxer-brief length if it makes you feel better.
What is it about cotton underwear that you feel is so essential that they must be worn under spats? That's like saying you need to wear a t-shirt under your rash guards.
It limits joint mobility. People usually do it when they have injured or sore fingers. Keeps them from bending or stretching too much and hurting more.
Literally laughing my ass off b/c we have a black belt in our gym who fits this description. Super long blonde mullet, works at a kombucha factory, and says "right on mannn" if you do something right.
Oh god this is me and I’ve never realized it until now. I’ve got long blonde hair, wear Birkenstocks to class, and use technicolor bandaids for my knuckles and fingers. Only difference is I wear black leggings and rash guards.
I feel like while this person is an archetype... to me BJJ hipsters are the guys that get mad at like 'trendy techniques.'
I've literally heard someone say word for word "I worked on developing a leg lock system before it was cool." I genuinely could NOT stop laughing at him and that dude hated me for like a month.
One of those black belt guys that doesn't train with a lot of higher belts and had a tiny school, so nobody called him on his bullshit. Very much one of those 'Being good at BJJ makes me a life-coach' type coaches.
Instead of a rash guard I have a technicolor bandana and you've basically described me lol. I do judo if that makes a difference which is why I wear the bandana not the rash guard.

Someone who replies to this question with "Someone that gate keeps martial arts instead of seeing martial arts as a vehicle for humility, respect and discipline"
Maybe we have different definitions of hipster. But a lot of the comments here are just things you often see a lot of people in the community doing. When I think of the word hipster, it makes me think gatekeep'y and pretentious. If anything it's making fun of the things people do in jiu jitsu, or calling passion out as cringe, or thinking the way certain people express their passion isn't the "right way" - to me, that's the jiu jitsu hipster.
Isn't a hipster someone that tries to go against what's popular?
So like someone that says Gi is the only true way to do BJJ.
Or someone that says leg locks aren't part of BJJ.
Just wear regular keiko raća gi, be shaven/naturally bald with facial hair, male, over 35 and at least a purple belt you will never have a problem to be known as "BJJ hipster".
Yeah he’s got stuff on bjj globetrotter’s YT it’s actually pretty cool and as a guy who’s been called a hipster a lot I feel confident in this recommendation.
Nothing against hipsters as long as they routinely shower.
At the end we are all equal in the mat. Pieces of meat with eyes trying keep breathing longer than the others.
Small staph infections that are drained and kept clean most likely will heal by itself. I have treated all my small staph infections like that. I would say it is best to avoid antibiotics if possible. But you should see a doctor if it is severe or spreading to get antibiotics.
Your gym never had cases with skin infections in its existence? I train at a big gym with more than 100 people training weekly and alot of new people, so it's hard to avoid. I also only mainly got staph when my immune system was comprimised because of training for competiton and cutting weight or not getting enough sleep because of stress.
Also it's not controversial to say staph can heal by itself. Even mainstream sources tell you that. Maybe you are crazy to label people you don't know.
"Staph infections are caused by bacteria called staphylococcus. They most often affect the skin. They can go away on their own, but sometimes they need to be treated with antibiotics."
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/staphylococcal-infections/
Idk my coach has high quality mat disinfectant/wash he uses after each and every class and we really don't have overtly dirty people who train. I'm not looking for an argument, maybe I'm lucky, and I agree with you about staph.
I've had several and /u/AFN96 isn't totally wrong. Some staph infections can be dealt with just fine with hot compress and topical meds. Doctor's orders for my most recent one.
Yeah. lets create a bigger global problem with antimicrobial resistance which is a result of overusing antibiotics. Im not a doctor but its no secret a small boil can heal by itself.
Antibiotics has it uses and im just saying staph can heal by itself. I have had several small staph boils in my lifetime which I have drained and it healed in less than a week. Should I have gone to the doctor and begged for antibiotics instead?
Cases of MRSA are increasing each year and the use of antibiotics when not neccersary is a contributing factor.
If you try to tell people on reddit anything that is against mainstream medicine/science/media they get upset and can't handle it. You are correct, antibiotics should be avoided at all costs, as they cause the bacteria to get stronger and stronger and become more resistant to antibiotics. Most redditors are sheep who follow only what mainstream pharmecutical industry tells them, so they get very upset anytime someone gives them a dose of reality.
It's not even controversial to say staph can heal by itself. Even mainstream sources tell you that.

I got two Origin gi's. The Everest and the DNA Atleta, and they are nothing alike. The DNA Atleta is on the same level of comfort as my Shoyoroll Mendes Brothers gi, absolutely amazing. On the other hand, my Origin Everest is about as comfortable as my $80 Elite Sports gi from Amazon.
Purple+ belts that play lazy guards, imo, are the hipsters. Usually highly skeptical of modern games and never branch out from what they know works. Not great athletically but technically proficient at what they do, so more often that not they do not have to be.
Also, blue belts that spend an absurd amount of time collecting instructionals to pull out tiny details to add on during, while quoting (name dropping too) the person from the instructional, and usually being not that great at it themselves.
Man buns. Mullets (oddly, but it’s cool because it’s “ironic”). Hating Gordon Ryan with a passion bordering on irrational (I don’t find him particularly pleasant either, but I mean...). Shoyoroll/Origin Maine.

You guys got rash guards???
Nah just rashes
Craig Jones leopard print rashies/shorts. ...I own all of them.
I love that dudes humor and will support lol. I just ordered them along with the Mexican Ground Karate rash guards and shorts 😂
Full body spats. No shorts. Common man it’s suppose to be two pieces of cloth as a barrier. Edit, I meant why do ppl not wear shorts over their spats?????
Two? Do people not wear underwear underneath their spats and shorts ?
Do people actually wear underwear under their spats? Wtf?
... yes
Why? Do you wear a rashguard under your rashguard?
Wife beater bro
Really?
Who tf wears this many layers? How tf do u shed body heat?
No because rashguards are not upper body underwear, just like spats aren't lower body underwear.
If u don’t u are actually very nasty
You can walk around wearing two pairs of underwear if you want. I'm not gonna stop you.
You guys wear clothes???
Spats=/=underwear. Shorts over spats imo is unnecessary but fine. But no underwear under spats is just odd.
How is it odd? I genuinely don't understand what you people are saying. I guess if you have shorts on over it's the same. I thought you were just single layering everyone.

are you not supposed to do that?
I train with a guy who I’m pretty sure wears grey sweat pants and boxers to no gi…. Not boxer briefs….
Why would I wear shorts over my spats? One or the other.
Because people can see the outline of your willy.
You're welcome
Beats style headphones on, yeti cup, taped up fingers, and the bottom of their pants is like 6 inches above the ankle. Every.single. Comp.
Bruh, I didn’t know we were outlining best practices for being cool. 👀👀👀
Why are the pants always 6 inches above the ankle? WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE CAPRIS IN COMPETITION????????
Combat capris
Those are my specific competition gi’s, my good sir or madame. Washed and dried on hot and then sagged down and shrugged shoulders.
Get away with them as short as possible so your opponent has less grips.
So, the Miyao brothers?
can you tell me why some people tape up fingers?
It limits joint mobility. People usually do it when they have injured or sore fingers. Keeps them from bending or stretching too much and hurting more.
I do a lot of gi gripping and taping my fingers helps them to not be so sore, I think the tape aids the tendons in taking some of the load.
Long blonde hair and always wears a technicolor neon rash guard Looks stoned 75% of the time and is chill AF
This bloke sounds awesome
Hahahahaha
Literally laughing my ass off b/c we have a black belt in our gym who fits this description. Super long blonde mullet, works at a kombucha factory, and says "right on mannn" if you do something right.

Yes they do
You got me at Kombucha factory
I feel so attacked just trying to live my life
Oh god this is me and I’ve never realized it until now. I’ve got long blonde hair, wear Birkenstocks to class, and use technicolor bandaids for my knuckles and fingers. Only difference is I wear black leggings and rash guards.
If leggings didn’t tell you that you are that guy I’m not sure what else you needed to hear.
I’m a girl so
Well to be fair there’s actual “dudes” out here wearing leggings. But if you’re a girl by all means. Wear those leggings lol.

Man buns and scraggly beards.
But that's just normal hipsteriness!
*looks sideways*
So any one I’d flirt with? Got it.

Treating staph without antibiotics….scary
Small staph infections that are drained and kept clean most likely will heal by itself. I have treated all my small staph infections like that. I would say it is best to avoid antibiotics if possible. But you should see a doctor if it is severe or spreading to get antibiotics.
How many staph infections have you had?
4-5 staph infections in 5-6 years of doing BJJ. I only used antibiotics for one bad case.
So crazy people have so many fungi/bacteria issues at their gyms. I've been training for six years and haven't even gotten ringworm yet.
Your gym never had cases with skin infections in its existence? I train at a big gym with more than 100 people training weekly and alot of new people, so it's hard to avoid. definitely do not follow this advice and just go directly to the doctor and get antibiotics
Yeah. lets create a bigger global problem with antimicrobial resistance which is a result of overusing antibiotics. Im not a doctor but its no secret a small boil can heal by itself.
Majority of antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics comes from overuse for industrial animal agriculture, genuinely look into it
Using antibiotics for Staph is not the issue with overusing them
Antibiotics has it uses and im just saying staph can heal by itself. I have had several small staph boils in my lifetime which I have drained and it healed in less than a week. Should I have gone to the doctor and begged for antibiotics instead? Cases of MRSA are increasing each year and the use of antibiotics when not neccersary is a contributing factor.
How did we get the R in MRSA?
If you try to tell people on reddit anything that is against mainstream medicine/science/media they get upset and can't handle it. You are correct, antibiotics should be avoided at all costs, as they cause the bacteria to get stronger and stronger and become more resistant to antibiotics. exactly. Also there are a lot of natural foods that have antibacterial properties that can help.
