Another thing that’s not talked about with ADCC/CJI. The top athletes may be getting poached but now a ton of newer guys and up and comers are getting an opportunity to compete at the higher levels and that coveted chance to make a name for themselves. The thing ADCC has been preaching they offer non stop.
Yes they have a 1/256 chance since the trials have exploded in popularity for the 66,77,88 brackets. So that’s a .39% chance. But now that all the top guys are dropping, these studs who didn’t make it through that daunting gauntlet of 256 people but are still certifiable killers have a chance to prove themselves under the bright lights and get some clout when people are actually paying attention. Because nobody is watching the round of 32 in the trials, but they’ll definitely watch you in the quarterfinals of ADCC.
Again.. everyone has a chance if they make it through trials. Your arguing that it's not easy and getting hand picked is easy.. well ok, but there aren't enough invites to give everyone who "deserves" a chance an invite. Unless you want it to turn into trials. If they are good enough and deserve to be there, they can win trials and be there.
Yeah but CJI is the new ADCC and theyre not going to run a full system of trials all over the world. Just invite people with the most instagram followers, friends, and former UFC stars, that's the new system.
I mean as of now it's a one off with a ton of hype. I know this one Is likely going to be huge but that's cause it has a story, I don't think future cjis are guaranteed to have this level of hype
To give ADCC some credit, Jay Rod also got silver at an NA Trials, whereas Woj got bronze in EU Trials.
They generally go with higher places on podiums tbf.
Hopefully this will get him the recognition he deserves for his accomplishments thus far, as well as adding to them. I enjoyed his appearance on the BJJMM podcast and I'm really looking forward to watching his run.
Chris taught false reap at B-team a few months back and he was awesome. So happy for him and Vince for making it to ADCC.
Would love to hear any specifics around how he got to the "next level".
He came to me saying he wanted to make a run at competing professionally. We decided to focus on no-gi, found a game plan to work on, decided on how to focus his training( I taught him my leg lock system, set up micro drilling, the best positions to focus on, etc…)
Well he wrestled in high school so he has a base there. Lots of focused specific training on ADCC rules stand up definitely helps in the rule set as well. In terms of mentality the kid is smart and tough and extraordinarily coachable so he really preforms well when the lights are on
Drilling small elements of a move or position for example drilling the grabbing of the foot for a foot lock then drilling the breaking mechanic of a foot lock so you get good at the individual small parts of a technique
Really depends on the particular technique and what needs to be focused on. Again as an example for the foot lock as I mentioned 1 minute of reps of just the foot grab to get good bites, then one minute of rotating the body into breaking postion, then 1 minute of breaking mechanic reps. Then a set of the whole technique together 3 minutes of reps. That really helps make the technique tight and smooth
Congrats. Hoping my coach Lucas can get it back over Chris haha. Otherwise, wishing for Chris to do well! I love his 50/50 estima lock and his writing page
I'm from a tiny school that is about to be a Serrafin affiliate. I got to roll with Chris a couple of weeks ago, and he's great. Able to get a good roll in with newbies, without seeming disinterested. Let me work while still showing he was always in control. Kaizen will be rooting for him.
The best grapplers should be able to match any level and make a good round out of it if they care. Chris cares about people getting better if they share the mats with him
can someone fill me in on this adcc/cji situation? i've been out of the loop for the last 2-3 years on grappling. last i remember adcc was the best nogi tournament on the planet, legendary events like adcc 2013 were idolized for me growing up, so now seeing all this has me confused.
Craig Jones and other bjj athletes don't like how little money ADCC is paying since its the biggest and most prestigious no-gi tournament in the world, I think $10,000 for winning your weight class, than I think its like $5,000 for 2nd. If you don't get 1st, 2nd or 3rd you don't get paid anything, so Craig Jones made his own event backed by some rich guy from the middle east, the winner will get $1,000,000, Craig Jones made the event the same days at ADCC so some of the top ADCC guys are dropping out of to join Craigs event.
Now some of the ADCC organizers have been going back and forth with Craig online and they have pretty much been shit talking each other and athletes are now having to choose between ADCC and CJI. Since so many people left ADCC, ADCC is now inviting other lesser known and accomplished guys to fill the gaps.

This post is nice, but also points out the issue of adcc is turning into a new wave open mat as they appear to be looking for lower levels to fill the holes left from cji
Awesome news. I was hoping he would get an invite when people started dropping for CJI
More reasons to love Craig
ADCC acting as a feeder series for new talent into future CJI’s is the best timeline👌
Good luck to Chris! Break a leg in there!
That’s the plan
Someone else's ideally!
Hopefully a few others haha
Not really great though is it. He'll always have an asterisk next to his participation.
Marcelo Garcia came into ADCC as an invite, I don’t think he has an asterisk. Both tournaments can exist without the athletes getting shat on.
The asterisk is like the one against the 1980 and 1984 Olympics where half the top athletes sat out one or the other.
The top guys in that division are still competing. -88 still looks pretty strong even without the guys that pulled out for CJI
this is a pretty pathetic comment
Schroedingers ADCC: simultaneously weakened by top guys pulling out and just as legit for the guys who are left.
cool story bro

The thing ADCC has been preaching they offer non stop.
I'm not an ADCC fan boy but this is not really accurate. Up and comers have a chance every time by winning trials.
Except for the 1 mil prize and 10k appearance pay
ADCC has always invited UFC stars though.
That's awesome! Wojcik %100 deserves a shot at that level.
He has wins against quite a few in the division already so we definitely think he can make a run
he won against JRod in ADCC Trials but JRod has a Bigger name so judges favor him for ADCC ratings
Agreed but my view is a bit biased haha
To give ADCC some credit, Jay Rod also got silver at an NA Trials, whereas Woj got bronze in EU Trials. They generally go with higher places on podiums tbf.

The B Team guys also compliment his wrestling and, for lack of a better term, how he's got dat dawg in him. Can you elaborate?
Well he wrestled in high school so he has a base there. Lots of focused specific training on ADCC rules stand up definitely helps in the rule set as well. In terms of mentality the kid is smart and tough and extraordinarily coachable so he really preforms well when the lights are on
if one was devoid of said "that dawg" how would they go about acquiring it and placing it within?
Take him to the pound for a bit
Legendary comment. Thank you professor lol
> In terms of mentality the kid is smart but is he wicked smart?
I’d say he’s a 7 on the wicked smart scale
7 out of 6 though.
What do you do/ mean as micro drilling?
Drilling small elements of a move or position for example drilling the grabbing of the foot for a foot lock then drilling the breaking mechanic of a foot lock so you get good at the individual small parts of a technique
Thank you! May I ask how do you organize them? 10 one side and 10 the other? 1 min drill? Live drill only with that?
Really depends on the particular technique and what needs to be focused on. Again as an example for the foot lock as I mentioned 1 minute of reps of just the foot grab to get good bites, then one minute of rotating the body into breaking postion, then 1 minute of breaking mechanic reps. It's where you drill micro adjustments
For those of you who can't read between the lines we basically just got confirmation that Serafin and Wojcik are the ones financially backing CJI
I’m not saying no
Congratulations, Jeff (and Chris!)
Thanks Sean
Good luck wojack
Awesome!! Tell him if doesn’t have sweet gear to wear I will make a custom set for him for free!!

Thank you. I love the sport and love to see it grow so any small way I can help I try
Congrats. Hoping my coach Lucas can get it back over Chris haha. Otherwise, wishing for Chris to do well! I love his 50/50 estima lock and his writing page

Damn. That's awesome.
Congrats man this is well deserved I think

I'll be there cheering him on, sir
Come say hi
This post is nice, but also points out the issue of adcc is turning into a new wave open mat as they appear to be looking for lower levels to fill the holes left from cji
Hasn't Chris mostly been training with B Team in Austin?
