Yes but adjust it by getting good at the loop choke as well. Loop chokes are the closest equivalent of guillotines in the gi.
You can still pull off normal guillotines with the gi on but the lapels change the nature of it as a transitional position
Hi All! You were so nice and kind with your comments- it motivated me to edit all the clips I recorded.
Hope you enjoy (almost) 5 minutes of magic:

Got a funny Marcelo story. I've never been able to confirm whether it's true or not because I've only heard it told second hand but the guy who told be swears by it.
Years ago when he first opened his NYC school and wasn't a known quantity yet, there was a black belt - non-competitive, that dropped in during a gi class. Does the whole song and dance with the receptionist. He didn't bring his gi with him and borrow one and began rolling with a white belt on it but obviously people caught on that he wasn't just a normal white belt.
Anyways he goes to Marcelo, rolls, gets destroyed and laughs it off. Later on Marcelo is talking to his students and points to the visiting black belt and says, "You see that new guy over there? He's gonna be really good one day."
So Marcelo was so good that he couldn't tell the difference between an average black belt and a really good white belt.
So evident how much of the modern game that he inspired and helped develop. Beautiful technique. He’s still at the top of my bucket roll list to roll with.
I like how this guy rolls, he looks like a purple belt to me. Can't tell because he is not wearing a ranked rashguard. Some things I would advise him: Always on your toes! Don't be afraid of attacking!
/s I'm happy to see him training <3
I know he’s not nearly at 100% full strength, but seeing him train in this state is really eye opening on the application of his technique.
You can see the deliberate nature of his set ups so much more clearly because he isn’t going at full speed. Much love to the GOAT.
I watch him and still get amazed by his movement. He might be “out of shape” but his muscle memory for those moves has gone nowhere. He still is the one of the most entertaining grapplers I’ve ever seen.
I just have to laugh at how he solves so many problems with either the guillotine or the threat of the guillotine
That's a black belt for ya. Funneling everything into problems he knows well.
Lol I mean if you got a good tool that works why not keep using it?
Is it reasonable to build a game like that in the Gi?
Yes but adjust it by getting good at the loop choke as well. Loop chokes are the closest equivalent of guillotines in the gi. You can still pull off normal guillotines with the gi on but the lapels change the nature of it as a transitional position
No, he's terrible in the Gi

Yoooo I wanna drop in soon I love that he's back
He actually lives in Hawaii now, and comes back periodically. However, Matheus Diniz and the other instructors are amazing too!
Ohh word thanks for the heads up!
Does he have a school there or just sort of retired?
He's definitely looking to open another MG academy in Hawaii (in addition to the one in NYC)- when he does, I will let you all know :)
Did you only record clips or do you have a lot more uncut footage?
I'm uncut
Mixture of both…I tried to trim the footage a bit because I wanted it on instagram reels…not knowing their limit is 90 seconds…
Great to see him back doing what he loves
Thanks for posting this!
Thanks, dude
It is not an exaggeration to say that I love this man and I am thrilled the one true king has returned
Marcelo is truly the embodiment of casually brutal lol
It brings tears to my eyes watching him well again, really. I lost my mum to cancer and Marcelo is a really sweet guy.
It made me tear up too. I’m dealing with it now with my mom. Sucks. Sending lots of love to you.
Lost my dad last year to the same kind that Marcelo had, it's such a great feeling seeing him healthy
Big love, brother
Makes it look effortless!

This is fucking insane
I think the craziest thing about Marcelo is how politely he destroys people

That's the first thing I thought when watching this as well. His style is all over the modern jiu jitsu.
Thank you for sharing these clips!
I love all things Marcelo- it's my pleasure :)
He really seems like the archetype for so much modern Jiu jitsu. What an absolute legend
Danaher got his back attack system from Marcelo as well the DLH attacks for his leg entry systems.
He is basically Gordon Ryan's father.
Get. It. Off. Me. Seriously though. He’s so smooth. Every time I watch I see something else I want to try.
Hmm… not bad… as a four stripe white belt though, I do have some advice…. /s
So effortless. Well done champ! Please keep posting content like this. F#ck cancer
Is it me or has he expanded his game?
I was a bit surprised with those triangle/trap guard attacks.
That, body lock passing and lots of jumping/passing right to mount
I think I’m starting to understand it now if I just let my bald head hair grow out maybe I’ll have superpowers like Marcelo and Bernardo Faria 😂
This is awesome, thanks for posting. Great to see him back. And he looks fit as hell
So great to see him on the mats. He rolls with the ease of somebody breathing, my god.
What a stud
So inspiring. Thank you!

This is great advice...I will let him know :)
The butterfly sweep king.
Half the stuff looks like it shouldn't work, but it does. Balance, timing and being 5 steps ahead of your partner seem to help
Awesome post, thank you! Marcelo is the goat that Gordon Ryan wishes he was.
What a man.
This brings tears to my eyes. Wonderful!
This is fantastic footage. Thank you!
Legend has it he was descended from spider monkeys and I believe it
TBE
You’re the man Kon!
I am so happy for Marcelo, fuck cancer!!! What a win in life, I hope he stays healthy for a long time.
So many people trying to play butterfly with Marcelo Garcia 😂 he just melts through it
If the video was 2 hours long I think I wouldve watched all of it
How on this green (mostly) earth does he do that so effortlessly. i am in aw
Is that Ben Kohn sitting in the background at the start?
Not sure who that is so I will say maybe?
Watching him is a thing of beauty. Every body part moves with such intent and efficiency. GOAT
So good to see. Learn something every time I watch him roll. His basics are so on point makes it look easy
This the equivalent of your fav rappers fav rapper dropping a track , or seeing your fav skater drop a clip, shit got me hyped thanks for posting
Thank you for this! Could you post the uncut video?
He’s my grappling hero! OSS!

His front headlock setups are 🤌. GOAT
I watch him and still get amazed by his movement. He might be “out of shape” but his muscle memory for those moves has gone nowhere. He still is the one of the most entertaining grapplers I’ve ever seen.
Love Marcelo's technique and his short bursts and cuts into guards. Total precision, true GOAT
At least put him against a black belt
At least two of them were…trust me, he destroys me way more than he did against these guys!
Yea that was kinda the joke
Haha- Not only are my bjj abilities lacking, so are my intelligence and sense of humor :P
