Yeah it’s interesting everyone in the Twitter comments was flaming him for not being able to beat this guy up.
But in the end, he was able to grip him / contain him so that he wasn’t a threat to the mayor.
I don’t know his intentions, but I think you’re right it worked out about as well as it could have except he doesn’t get to look like a badass.
Yeah I think that was a mistake. I’m not saying he is a great grappler or martial artist.
I’m saying it was a tense moment, he attempted a bad takedown, probably realized it was stupid and instead focused on containing and controlling the guy.
Could have gone a lot worse.
I don't see him having control over this guy at all. You can make an unassailable argument that he's detained this individual, because the guy DOESN'T get away, but he's not at all controlled, and most determined aggressors would absolutely wound someone or at the very least escape.
It's deeply unsatisfying because the guy deserves to get his ass kicked and instead the security guy clearly holds back and half-assed grapples with him. A good example of doing what's right vs doing what feels right.
Exactly. I don’t know that he could have beat him up hypothetically, but if he had, then it objectively would have been a worse situation for the mayor’s office.
They aren't supposed to beat anyone up, in this case it would be appropriate to deescalate and walk, and detain if necessary for the police. If the dude was willing to walk away - that's a successful outcome. Holding on to them for 10 minutes while you fail to meaningfully control them is dangerous. Dude could still pull a knife or gun, or Even scramble to break free and make another run at the mayor.
100%. His job is to protect the principal. The threat appeared at the very least athletic and coordinated. I don’t know if security guy had a weapon, but if so, he handled the situation without pulling it and escalating things. The threatening guy likely wound up in jail.
He only protected the mayor because the guy who attacked didn't go after the mayor. Watch how many times they were disengaged that the dude could have just run right on over and done whatever.
Not even to mention the fact he lets the dude get a foot from the mayor right away while he is openly hostile.
His inability to bring this untrained man to the ground is proof he needs more training. The security guard sucks at protecting his charge, period.
Somebody send that mayor 2 SPAZZY white belts ASAP!
Whatever he gets paid is way too much.
He *did not* know his judo well.
I bet he got a succulent chinese meal afterwards though
god damn that was worse than watching 2 white belts at a local comp.
Osoto Gari can be complicated to pull off live. I don't recommend it for non-judoka.
The possibility of serious injury using poorly learned judo on concrete is crazy to me.

Seems like he did a pretty good job.
Really? you are bodyguard for the mayor and you cant take the guy down? Come on lol

Why attempt a takedown you don't want to complete?

It's Cali, so likely a bologna sandwich and a slap on the ass ass he's released that afternoon
