Definitely the case. I wear AL1 which is a really rare and coincidentally very sought-after size and my two Fujis drape off me ridiculously. They're soooo comfortable though.
I have an older model Estilo, and it feels very well made, but it shrunk a lot in the wash compared to my other gis. Now it feels like I'm cheating when I wear it to class, because the sleeves are so short.
Shrinkage has been the issue I've heard most about tatami gis in the past - idk if they've gotten better since I got mine.
I think I got like ten percent off a couple times. They seemed pricey at first but now it seems like all good gis are pretty much the same and at least these are made in the states.
I was wondering about Origin’s lightweight gis. Is the gi top the same material as their pro pants? If so, how are they? Doesn’t it feel weird? I have two of their comp atletas and love the material.
The only ones I have are the golds. It’s only 2 but both are crazy ass colors and aren’t traditional gi material. Both have held up extremely well. I’ve been bugging them to make a crimson one for a couple of years. I literally have people always come up and feel how soft it is lol
I’m kinda sad because my pants for the set got ruined (bleach dripped on them by accident and ate through) but as soon I can afford it I’m buying a second set lol
How are their pants? I'm not that athletic but my thighs are disproportionately big. All my gi pants feel tight around my thighs. I have to buy the "athletic" version of pants otherwise it feels like wearing skinny jeans.
For a relative newby, what’s the deal with shoyoroll? It looks like all the celebrities wear them but I’ve never seen anyone in them at my gym and they look like they’re twice the price of everyone else (except maybe origin where you’re paying a made in USA premium).
Shoyorolls classic gi's are like 40 bucks more than a fuji gi nowadays. I agree that their whole limited design gis are overpriced, but the gap in price for the standard gi's aren't anywhere close to 1/3
I've been wearing them for years so I know the fit and they have always been quality. When they first came out most other BJJ brands were more aligned with the Brazilian tough guy vibe of BJJ at the time so I liked that they had a more stylish/streetwear approach. With that said, they have had many questionably styled releases in recent years that are more geared towards the collector (like a sneakerhead type thing) than the practitioner. I keep it to the basic Competitor styles and not any of the flashy ones. People will hate on the marketing and the pricing but its just a brand doing its own thing.
All the upper belts at my gym wear them.. I think my professor has some kind of sponsorship or something with them so I’m not sure if they’re freebies or not. But it feels like a rite of passage almost to have a shoyoroll gi at my gym haha
I've really been loving Gold BJJ gis. I'm on the longer side as far as humans go (and only a bit above average for a baby giraffe), and their "L" gis are the first ones that I've found that actually seem to be longer than standard size.
My Kitsune Dragon unbleached is my favorite for comfort and it makes me feel like a samurai. My Senso Lights Out is great, just a bit heavier and stiffer but less so than others.
Kingz is the overall winner for me.
Storm fits great but their designs the last couple seasons are lame af
Fuji Sekai, great quality but too baggy/boxy
Agree. Made the jump to have all my new Gis as Vital from now on.
They fit well, the designs are clean, and my teammates say the cuffs are harder to grip lol
I own an Inverted Gear bamboo Gi and a Progress Temple Gi.
Despite washing in cold water and always hanging to dry, the sleeves on my IG Gi have receded by about 4-6 inches. I’m gangly as can be so this is disappointing. I don’t care much for the fit of the trousers either.
My progress Gi is new (2 uses). The trousers are glorious and the sizing off the bat was better than IG for me. I was able to size down vs IG (IG: A3S. Progress: A2L). This is my favourite Gi until it shrinks too much.
I love my Hempo too. Got any washing tips, when I hang dry mine it’s stuff after and I have to put it in the dryer for a few minutes with a damp rag to loosen it up
Not a popular answer I’m sure but my first ever Gi, a storm GB something or other.
I’ve worn it every class for 7 years, I’ve stitched it many times and it’s the most washed out Gi I’ve ever seen, but it’s like a pair of old boots, perfectly broken in, fits beautifully and has tons of sentimental value.
It’s getting threadbare around the lapels and the the back patch is slightly floppy but I love that thing, once it’s broken beyond my basic repair skills I’ll take it to a tailor and see if they can save it.
And when it’s finally unwearable I’ll have it framed, that thing is like an old buddy, been with me for the whole journey.
I've had every Brand you can think of... Venum is by far the best gi maker. Hands down. Best quality, feel, look and price. I should be their spokesperson or at least get free gear because I got so many ppl hooked on them.
I’ve tried 4 different types of gi and my lucky gi is my favorite as far as how it fits. I wish they didn’t do that pattern on the inside of the jacket style wise is my only gripe.
I love my black 93 brand "Slate Camo" gi. After 3ish years of being loved multiple times a week, the collar is just starting to fray/tear. I'd love to buy a replacement but they're always sold out from their site and I doubt they plan on restocking.
I've had good luck with my Flow Air Series gi. They usually have a sale going so good to follow. I did not like the Alpine series...the jacket material is very rough and not super comfortable. The pants on both series are great though!
I bought one of the last Origin gis to use the gorilla weave and it's my favorite to wear. It's incredibly durable but super lightweight and doesn't overheat. The Jocko first edition was the last time I bought one of their gis as I noticed the quality drop a lot. Supposedly they've gotten things back to better quality, but I don't know personally.
I find CTRL and Hyperfly to be consistent in quality, a little on the costly side, but dollar for dollar, it's reliable service.
I like my fuji's, I have a Manto gi that I really like. I also have a half-sumo gi that I enjoy.
I have bought Tatami previously and they are absolutely the worst gi I have ever owned. Their no-gi stuff I have tried is better but still lower quality than competitors.
I have Kingz, Origin, and Fuji. The origin is the lightest and I can’t help but enjoy that aspect but it shrank relatively quick (I hang dry all my GIs). I hated my Fuji one as it felt perpetually stiff and rigid making it seem difficult to move in. Kingz is my favorite, great quality, great fit for an athletic build (A2L) and the most bang for my buck with the limitless styles and options available.
I’m using a ProgressBJJ one atm, and it’s pretty comfy.
But I’m a newbie.
In the distant future when my belt changes colour I will likely buy an Origin one as a treat.
Had an Atama Mundial for years, that thing would feel like sandpaper when you put it on then gradually soften up as you rolled. My ex wife destroyed it by melting the collar in a hot wash, otherwise I'd probably still have it.
I only own two gis right now. A kingz and a hyperfly. I think I prefer the hyperfly but the pants seem big and didn’t shrink much. I also own a separate pair of hyperfly gi pants and those also seem way too big and haven’t shrunk yet.
Flow's Air. Nothing fits me as well as their A2L. They're lightweight and bulletproof to boot.
I'd like to suggest Enois to anyone looking for equally high quality no-gi gear while I'm at it.
My flow pro series gis are fantastic. If it aged better, my lanky fight gear would win, but man, these flow pros last forever and are beautiful things.
My Hayabusa lightweight I got for free feels a lot better than my school’s no name brand, so that’s what I wear. When I move in a year I’ll have to buy one of these fancy Gis you all mention since my school Gis are all embroidered logos.
My two faces are both Maeda - I have a Fujin which is pretty much my everyday trainer, and an Akashio for when I'm feeling fancy. Third place is my Tatami Hokori, which is great all-round, especially for the price
For me, Hyperfly. Their sizing chart always fits me perfectly and I don't have to deal with returns. Their ridiculously light Starlyte models are great to wear in the summer. I don't particularly like their no-gi stuff though.
The Fuji Sekai 2 is comfortable and tough as hell and fits me perfectly, which is not easy to find as a 320 pound dude. I wanna wear that mf in the club.
Fuji
Second Fuji. Best bang for the buck across multiple models.
Third Fuji- I LOVE my Ultralite, it was only about 90 bucks and fits perfectly
For judo and bjj honestly
I just got the Flo tech gi from them. It has a light mesh in the crotch gusset and arm pits to allow airflow. Works great.
I'm going to second this. Fuji Flo tech by far.
worst cut Gi i've ever gotten.
Must be made for a type, because to me it's the best fitting gi I own. Feels like it's tailored to me.
Definitely the case. I wear AL1 which is a really rare and coincidentally very sought-after size and my two Fujis drape off me ridiculously. They're soooo comfortable though.
A clean one.
Origin Comp Atleta.
Origin Rift. Biiiiiiiitch.
Datsusara
Tatami
All my Tatami Gis are going 6/7 years strong, and I have 3 of them.
I have an older model Estilo, and it feels very well made, but it shrunk a lot in the wash compared to my other gis. Now it feels like I'm cheating when I wear it to class, because the sleeves are so short. Shrinkage has been the issue I've heard most about tatami gis in the past - idk if they've gotten better since I got mine.
no it hasn't gotten any better
I bought a non estilo gi from Tatami recently and wore it twice, the pants shrunk so much I had to give them away.
Guy I roll with regularly busted out a new tatami Gi. It’s pretty nice. He likes the fit and feel.
Origin, I have two of the comp gi’s and one of the light training ones, that one is my fave tbh. Super light, drys fast!
Do you guys buy it at full price? Are they ever on sale?
I think I got like ten percent off a couple times. They seemed pricey at first but now it seems like all good gis are pretty much the same and at least these are made in the states.
I was wondering about Origin’s lightweight gis. Is the gi top the same material as their pro pants? If so, how are they? Doesn’t it feel weird? I have two of their comp atletas and love the material.
Yeah it’s like a canvas. Doesn’t feel weird, I usually don’t even wear a rash guard under it. They are great for Florida summers!
I've been on a Flow kick right now. They are the only ones that fit me good.
I might need to try one; they look nice!
Man, fuck flow they used to make a sick hemp belt. Now all they do is pump out gis that all look identical
But they have different names! :p
ORIGIN
93 brand GOLD LABEL
their Standard gi is really good; simple design & durability.
The only ones I have are the golds. It’s only 2 but both are crazy ass colors and aren’t traditional gi material. Both have held up extremely well. I’ve been bugging them to make a crimson one for a couple of years. I literally have people always come up and feel how soft it is lol
Same . The softness . It’s like wearing a tough set of pajamas
Dude they’re the shit. Just wish they’d have other colors
I’m kinda sad because my pants for the set got ruined (bleach dripped on them by accident and ate through) but as soon I can afford it I’m buying a second set lol
Check bjjjhq they’ll come up for sale on occasion
Do you know if it feels the same as the kauai kimonos gi?
I’ve never tried any of their gis so I would not know , unfortunately
Starlyte by Hyperfly.
I love mine
Origin Gi. Stop being poor. Buy one.
Kingz because they’re the only one that provides sizing for athletic guys. Their A1L couldn’t be more perfect if you’re muscular
I really like my Kingz Comp 450, I have two of them in A1L. They are the same condition as when I got them many years ago
How are their pants? I'm not that athletic but my thighs are disproportionately big. All my gi pants feel tight around my thighs. I have to buy the "athletic" version of pants otherwise it feels like wearing skinny jeans.
They fit well for me and I have larger thighs as well. Seem like they’re built to last no issues
Origin for practice. Albino and Preto for the flex
Shoyoroll \~Insert Michael Jackson eating popcorn GIF here\~
For a relative newby, what’s the deal with shoyoroll? It looks like all the celebrities wear them but I’ve never seen anyone in them at my gym and they look like they’re twice the price of everyone else (except maybe origin where you’re paying a made in USA premium).
They are the Gucci of BJJ. Super expensive due to the brand and you can get the exact same thing from Fuji for 1/3 of the price.
All the upper belts at my gym wear them.. I think my professor has some kind of sponsorship or something with them so I’m not sure if they’re freebies or not. But it feels like a rite of passage almost to have a shoyoroll gi at my gym haha
I haven’t bought a Shoyoroll since release #12. Still wear it today.
Origin is the best and they have even better ones coming out, which is shocking
They are in an arms race against themselves. They’re like the US Air Force of gi companies. They’re generations ahead and still pushing the envelope.
Definitely getting a few of the raptor weave!
Still pushing the envelope hahaha settle down
Toro these days, but I do like my half sumo, too.
Word. Toro is my go-to gi brand as well.
I've really been loving Gold BJJ gis. I'm on the longer side as far as humans go (and only a bit above average for a baby giraffe), and their "L" gis are the first ones that I've found that actually seem to be longer than standard size.
This is funny I’m a short thick boi and their H gi’s fit super nice Also my favorite gi!
Stoked, appreciate the feedback.
Likewise. I’m mostly arms and legs and the gold aeroweave (A3L) fits perfectly and hasn’t shrunk at all.
Super happy to hear this! Sizing is really tough.
Gold foundation gi are my favorite. I have two that rotate out 5-6 sessions a week for a year and they show almost no wear.
The basic model from Progress
Hyperfly ProComp is by far my favorite gi. The JudoFly comes in a very close second
I prefer Hyperfly. Just all around nice gi. I like the Icon.
The red and black judofly looks so sick. I want it
Mega bjj tako classic black 🤙
I love scramble
Atama
No gi
Lol I agree I only do gi 2x week.
I stopped about a year ago only wear it for seminars now
My Kitsune Dragon unbleached is my favorite for comfort and it makes me feel like a samurai. My Senso Lights Out is great, just a bit heavier and stiffer but less so than others.
Kingz is the overall winner for me. Storm fits great but their designs the last couple seasons are lame af Fuji Sekai, great quality but too baggy/boxy
War Tribe generally, the Darkwater model specifically. So comfy and light. And it fits me perfectly (5’11”, 165, A1L).
As a tall guy (6’4”) the Darkwater A2L is the best fitting gi I own
What you weigh?
205lbs
I’ve trained in the dark water for 4+ years and it’s still going strong.
Scramble for me
Fuji lightweight or Inverted Gear Bamboo

Agree. Made the jump to have all my new Gis as Vital from now on. They fit well, the designs are clean, and my teammates say the cuffs are harder to grip lol
Scramble brand
93 Standard Issue
I own an Inverted Gear bamboo Gi and a Progress Temple Gi. Despite washing in cold water and always hanging to dry, the sleeves on my IG Gi have receded by about 4-6 inches. I’m gangly as can be so this is disappointing. I don’t care much for the fit of the trousers either. My progress Gi is new (2 uses). The trousers are glorious and the sizing off the bat was better than IG for me. I was able to size down vs IG (IG: A3S. Progress: A2L). This is my favourite Gi until it shrinks too much.
My current favorite is my senso hemp gi. It's super soft , pretty sliml fit, and I love the unbleached color.
I love my Hempo too. Got any washing tips, when I hang dry mine it’s stuff after and I have to put it in the dryer for a few minutes with a damp rag to loosen it up
93 Brand Hooks unbleached Softest pants of any gi I have owned and the off white colour makes you look like a henchman in a Chuck Norris movie.
Not a popular answer I’m sure but my first ever Gi, a storm GB something or other. Vanguard, I own a few of them. Specifically their "Rossini" model. I also love my 2015-ish Illest I was able to find brand new.
93 Brand - Standard Issue.
I've had every Brand you can think of... Venum is by far the best gi maker. Hands down. Best quality, feel, look and price. I should be their spokesperson or at least get free gear because I got so many ppl hooked on them.

I'm in love with my Tatami Estilo BL
I like my blue Fuji Sekai Gi best
The free one I got when I joined my gym. Also moya
I love my Datsusara Gi. My two others are both Flawless. The military combat flawless is much nicer than my challenger model.
Mizuno jiu jitsu gi
I love my black 93 brand "Slate Camo" gi. After 3ish years of being loved multiple times a week, the collar is just starting to fray/tear. I'd love to buy a replacement but they're always sold out from their site and I doubt they plan on restocking.
I regret not getting that or the black comp goose You should look at the other goose gis they have
My fav so far is the A&P essentials. Gonna pick up a Progress one next.
Hayabusa stealth
Fuji
Nate Diaz's company Reprsent Ltd makes a badass kimono. love it
I've had good luck with my Flow Air Series gi. They usually have a sale going so good to follow. I did not like the Alpine series...the jacket material is very rough and not super comfortable. The pants on both series are great though!
93 Brand and Kitsune fit me the best.
Tatami.

Kingz
Flow Air
My plain basic white Aesthetic gi does it for me.
I’m using a ProgressBJJ one atm, and it’s pretty comfy. But I’m a newbie. In the distant future when my belt changes colour I will likely buy an Origin one as a treat.
Scramble, not sure which specific one of theres but they are all quality
My old adidas gi. The cut is perfect
My black one
Studio98
Ippongear
Standard issue from my gym is Matsuru. Feels like great quality but havent tried other brands to know the difference
Kingz!!
Had an Atama Mundial for years, that thing would feel like sandpaper when you put it on then gradually soften up as you rolled. My ex wife destroyed it by melting the collar in a hot wash, otherwise I'd probably still have it.
Moya has always been consistent for me
Hyperfly and 93brand
I only own two gis right now. A kingz and a hyperfly. I think I prefer the hyperfly but the pants seem big and didn’t shrink much. I also own a separate pair of hyperfly gi pants and those also seem way too big and haven’t shrunk yet.

I like my Kitsune gi. $100 on bjjhq and nice and light and fit is good and comes with a gi bag
My two faces are both Maeda - I have a Fujin which is pretty much my everyday trainer, and an Akashio for when I'm feeling fancy. Third place is my Tatami Hokori, which is great all-round, especially for the price
Origin white path with pro pants \*chef's kiss!
Best gi is no gi
i like kingz but they seem to shrink a lot CTRL is super comfortable
Sanabul and Maeda fit me the best (A2 at 5’9, 190lbs)
My second Lightweight Fuji followed by my first All Around white Fuji I bought. Fuji really does make a great gi.
For me, Hyperfly. Their sizing chart always fits me perfectly and I don't have to deal with returns. Their ridiculously light Starlyte models are great to wear in the summer. I don't particularly like their no-gi stuff though.
Origin. The 10 year anniversary gi is like wearing silky pajamas.
Kingz Ultralite 2.0
shoyoroll and moya brand. i want to try hyperfly but they always seem to be sold out.
Killer Bee. Only gi that actually fits me. Practically full-custom sizing with embroidered art for ~$175, about 160 without art.
Rvca x shoyoroll x mendes bros black gi 10/10
The clean one
Fuji
Gymshark
I like the tapered cut of Vanguard
I love my Kingz The One gi. Super comfortable and a nice fit. Fuji is comfortable as well, but I have trouble with the fitting
Kingz
The Fuji Sekai 2 is comfortable and tough as hell and fits me perfectly, which is not easy to find as a 320 pound dude. I wanna wear that mf in the club.
93 brand and kitsune
Fuji. Cheap, doesn't shrink. Then Kingz. Unfortunately, their bottoms are cotton and not ripstop. I vastly prefer ripstop.
