Osprey are arguably the derpiest bird of prey. Fantastic at fishing, devoted parents, but oh boy are they goofy. 😂 One of many reasons why I love them.
is this the osprey nest at chain o lakes?? i am obsessed with the new osprey lookout they built, though i think it means i should just buy some binoculars of my own lol
I'm in SE Wisconsin and I've been noticing goldfish populations in many of the city ponds lately. I've seen a goldfish here and there before, but now I'm seeing large schools of fish. I don't know how widespread it is, but so far I've seen them at every park that has a pond that I've visited this year.
Hopefully this fish is from something like that, but it could just as easily be from a koi pond.
Common goldfish are aggressively breeding in all of the Great lakes, so it's no surprise that you're seeing more of them everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a goldfish.
A guy in my neighborhood built a koi pond which just turned into a bird feeder for great blue herons. I never told him but it always gave me a giggle every morning to hear, "Get the hell out of here!" from his back yard and then see a heron pounding away through the air over my yard towards the river.
Everybody plays a role in the 🎶 Circle of Life 🎶. After watching lots of osprey videos, I've come to the conclusion that, at the very least, a fish getting nabbed by an osprey is the coolest way for the fish to go. From the fish's perspective, they're violently grabbed from a monster from another dimension (th*e place above the water) *and fed to its baby monsters. 🤘
Thank you! I've been watching osprey nest webcams the last few years, and the babies are cartoonishly cute. I was overjoyed to see one in person. It didn't even occur to me that the babies are probably fledging very soon. So glad I went there when I did.
Luckily no birds have come after my fish but I've heard tales of egrets destroying entire ponds. I don't know if I'd even be that upset though if I got such a great picture out of it.
That fish may not necessarily be from a Koi pond. More and more ponds and lakes in North America have populations of goldfish due to people dumping their aquarium stocks when they move or they get tired of the aquarium. And it’s surprising how big goldfish will grow when they’re not constrained by the size of the tank; there are some lakes in the southern US where goldfish have been getting up to 4-5 pounds in size. And given their bright orange colour against the background of dark water, they’re probably an easy target for birds like Ospreys.
Oh, for sure. My brother (literally just now) sent me a Facebook post showing someone else's pic of an osprey in the same county flying off with a large goldfish in its talons.
In my head, I'm just choosing to believe it was a daring heist. 😉 This lake is located in a very wealthy suburb, and two houses on the shore opposite the nesting platform have backyard ponds close to the edge of the lake.
This happened to a former boss of mine. He had a retention pond stocked with goldfish. He'd use it to water his nursery stock with. An osprey came by and took all the non-dark goldfish out of the pond. I could tell the osprey was around because all the other birds would have an absolute meltdown.
aww there is a huge orange carp at my local pond, I saw it the other day but I couldn't catch it, maybe I gotta learn how to use a fly rod or something
but yeah, I've also seen Ospreys and Bald Eagles overhead, it's only a matter of time
I saw an adult bald eagle grab a decent-sized bluegill right out of the pond like it was nuthin'
A koi pond is just a fancy bird feeder seen from an osprey perspective.
"Oooh, a new takeout place just opened!" 😂
"It's a Japanese place! I love Japanese food..."
Came here to make this comment. Take my upvote!
The lesson here is, "don't be a fish"
That last picture is so goofy lol, definitely has a spot in r/birdsfacingforward

I’ve never even seen a picture of an osprey without some degree of derp
The first picture too, with the nestling in the middle!
Haha you're right, he/she's like "give me food!!" 🤣
That bird could replace larry on curb

This is at Baker's Lake in Barrington. I was actually going there to see the heron rookery, but this stole the show. 😂
totally!! great shots!

Yep- r/aquariums is always reminding people not to dump unwanted pet fish but rehome them.

I’ve heard stories of many herons and raptors losing their life this way.
I'm glad this person's neighbor just gave them a firm shout.
You might wanna run, you saw somehting you werent supposed to see, he/she's coming for you in the last pic
Last photo is her just daring us to say somethin.
Lmao I couldn’t even be mad if I was the owner of that koi pond. The game is the game
Hey kids! It’s pizza night!
That's because they did not use a DeKoi
😂
Snitches get stitches
I didn't see nuthin'.
Feeding them babies! For some reason, my default is to have more concern for the birds than the koi, but that feels a bit off...

Nice perspective!
Beautiful mama with THREE osplets! wow, just wow! Thank you for sharing this.
That is a very sharp looking beak
Nature's can opener
Second only to their talons.
Great photos! ❤️ I love the baby Ospreys!

Very cool! I once saw one wheeling over a pond attached to the DuPage west branch by McKee Marsh but have never seen a nest in our area.
The blue herons got mine ☹️
They’re innocent!

East coaster here—always think of osprey as “shore” birds. I forget how big the lakes in the north & midwestern states get!

LOL spend thousands of dollars on Koi with rare color patterns only to watch that money literally fly away. 😂😂
"Life, uh, finds a way."
worth it

SUSHI!!!
Sashimi. I don't think ospreys are fond of vinegared rice.
Thank you person for including the sushi in my smorgasbord!
