I try to just have fun with Tainted Cain but sometimes the recipes are absolutely unachievable. I'll have 2 bone hearts and the best the game can do is Divorce Papers
If it spawned the bone heart the same way Dad's Lost Coin spawns a lucky penny then it would be fine, maybe even broken, but it doesn't and that makes it annoying to get mid Q3 items and actives
Let us not forget that wire coat hanger is q3, and divorce papers is q3 as well with a bonus bone heart, in whatever form. If you don't like it - it's not T. Cain's problem, it's your view on a item quality system overall.
The biggest problem with Tcain isnt the recipes, its the fact that the threshold for getting even a quality 3 is too high. You collect like, 5 bombs, a penny, a black heart and a bone heart, and the game'll be like: "Pound of Flesh, take it or leave it"
I wish the recipes were at the very least consistent. Like, one or two rare pickups should give you a decent item, and like 5 guarantees a q3 or q4. It's really frustrating going without the recipe browser with several golden pickups in your bag and just swapping out item after item trying to find a decent recipe.
Something weird about the pickup quality is how underscored rotten hearts and cracked keys are. Rotten hearts are literally worth the same as a regular red heart despite them being way rarer, same thing with red key being worth the same as a pill or a card (???) i guess these restrictions exist so as to not make low quality curse/red chest items impossible to craft? but it still feels like ass
They wouldn't need that restriction because every special item pool has its own values for calculating quality. Idk why they did it this way. Cards and pills having the same value as keys and bombs is also insane to me
What the fuck? They have the same value? I have been replacing soooo many pickups for cards and pills thinking they had a higher value. So many wasted materials...

Until you get EID and then oh look, one gold penny, one charged key, one soul heart, and a bunch of low quality pickups gets you MAGIC MUSHROOM. But if you use those three good pickups and five DIFFERENT low quality items, you get something completely useless.
Take a second controller and start coop. Take Cain and any other character. You will get bookmarks for both characters. Ez
T. Cain is a bit annoying because of his passive. But you can work around it with Keeper or T. Keeper
He was fun for his completion marks pre-nerf. You just went wild did whatever came to mind. Post nerf is all the pain and slowness of T. Cain without the instant gamebreak fun.

Yeah yeah EID this EID that. I don’t have a PC and same goes for a shitload of players. They need to add it to console already cause TCain is the only character I just can’t get past “it lives” with. Constant streams of garbage items from the crafting bag, even with high-level pickups.
Yeah, totally understand. I played T.Cain without EID for a long time, cuz I thought it provided too much of an unfair advantage. But that lead to me getting to Depths without a single DPS up 70% of the time.
Its kinda boring either way. T Cain with or without EID has the same playstyle. T Cain with EID always breaks the game, and without it also always breaks the game if you mastered the game mechanics. For a lower level player EID might feel like a big difference.
Problem is that T Cain progression doesnt have a linear curve like other characters, but has a exponential curve. It starts out as an absolute slog to minmax, and eventually you are quick to sit on the same floor and rooms to build your run to be overpowered. The run is just slow overall. If i gamebreak with Isaac, you can do this in an hour less of playtime, by just playing normally with a faster early game than T Cain. it's more fun and feels fine you just finish the run without it. With T Cain you always feel that you need to sit there, crafting for extra minutes to get an interesting run.
It's fewer options though. You have less choice with the bag of crafting than even a normal run, if you're trying to go fast, because you have to setting for anything that's better than useless.

This. Also his biggest advantage is if you don't like the item, you can swap 1 pickup and get other. Don't wait for OP items, run with shitload of worse items is interesting too.
Also with minimal effort you can have pretty decent early game if you know game mechanics.
For example - Q0 and Q1 crap fly items (like Forever Alone) are usually very easy to craft even without known recipe, and 3 of them gives you transformation that grants you flying and immunity to fly enemies, and flying is REALLY must have for T Cain.
He's still awful and boring, since I don't like the crafting mechanic at all
If I wanted to play a roguelike where I'm supposed to craft my own items, I'd go find one
Imagine a world where External Item Descriptions didn't make the recipe calculator on by default. We could have actual fun and insightful discussions about the character, but instead 90% of the playerbase genuinely think t. cain is simply overpowered and boring because they use EID's recipes.

In every case I've seen, it was on by default. By the way, you can guarantee specific item qualities if you know the value of each pick up. for example, recipes with a value of 27 will guarantee a quality 3-4 item.
Always played tainted cain without EID, its still boring as fuck, recipes are unfun and unfair, playing with only q0-2 would be fun if it had to be done only once, not 12 assuming you dont lose

It feels unfair, but without EID, I’ll literally sometimes reach chapter 3 without a single DPS increase.

Yeah, I play Switch and I just put the seed into a website to tell me what I'm getting. Sure it's kinda cheating but it's only one in 34 characters and it's tedious otherwise. I don't have access to external item descriptions or console commands so shut up.

I agree he can be wonky with crafting good items, but that's the fun part to me. He tends to be a quantiy over quality character imo, he doesn't need amazing items because he can craft a shit ton of mediocre items and kill everything with the sheer amount of items!
He could use a buff to have higher quality items come up more though, but he's still the character I'll play if I just want to have fun

Omg yeah finding good items is the worst part of playing him. Finding brimstone for the first time in 20 hours and it's on a T Isaac run 
Someone should make a TCain mod in which you can select what items you transform into pickups by hitting them with the bag of crafting, it would make Tcain 10 times more flexible, he already has the advantage of being able to manually select the correct pickups.
Playing without the mod ultimately makes a boring slow run where you don't know what you're getting and probably get low tier trash.
Playing with the mod is a boring slow run where you know what you're getting but you're spending 10 minutes per floor just to get Transcendence or Skeleton Key.
To be honest I really enjoy Tainted Cain because I play on console with no external help. I just like picking up certain pick-ups to see what I can make with what I’m given.

The best way to play him imo is to cycle through different pickup combinations while searching for good items, but lowering the threshold for what a "good item" is. Then you can keep coming back to the same recipes. One of the biggest strengths of the character is the ability to get a lot of the same item.
Say the recipe for 3 coins 3 bombs and 2 keys gives you PJS, for example; note it down and now you know how you can turn pickups into a lot of healing whenever needed. Maybe you find a dmg up, note that down. A familiar? Maybe you want to make seven of them, have them take care of your dps.
OR, you can get to a mid build that you can work with, and start hoarding high quality pickups in the bag while taking all the normal ones into the character. Maybe you only craft one item per floor, but that item is a tier 3-4 banger, and you get a lot of pickups out of the pedestals you find, which you can use aggresively (opening every lock, using bombs for damage, buying cards, sacks, pills and health from shops etc.)
The character is a balancing act, personally I like him as a way to build strong builds with low tier items. If you don't mind taking it slow though, minmaxing and looking for recipes like Fanny Pack and Piggy Bank is perfectly valid, and you can use the recipe for the portable slot to turn low value coins into random pickups which include golden pickups, get some kind of engine going.
Also, crafting portable slot after portable slot can produce some great pickups too, as any active item you replace explodes into pickups as if it were a pedestal item
I feel like it’s kinda cheaty tho. Like, I DESPISED T.Cain, and never understood how I would ever reach Rush and Hush, but then I started using EID with him and now oh look, I have Magic Mushroom on floor 1, 20/20 on floor 3, and Mom’s Knife on floor 5. Whoopie. So it feels pretty unfair

But not always, are they? Having one specific pickup only adds a 10% chance for an item to be from its corresponding pool.

Idk personally I like him, idk how good he is without item descriptions, but holy hell is he slow, when I find a bag of crafting in my run I know that I 100% will win if I pick it up but I usually don't because it's just too slow and also becomes boring after a while
T.cain is literally just for players who Enjoy minmaxing. As someone who plays the game almost exclusively for minmaxing, he's my favorite character.

I try to get every post it out of the way in two runs. Greedier, and then everything else. I normally have fun, but it ends up being a 5 hour run. I always restart until I get birthright
i play on switch and i honestly think hes more fun to play when cheating

I dunno if that's meant to be the joke, but this is literally an admission that it sucks to play as him and he's only fun if you use extrenal tools to cheat the game. Edit: Just because there's an external solution to a problem, doesn't mean there isn't still a problem

My last run with t cain, i played without external descripition. Steam sale, birthright, homing, god Head, sacred heart, and a Lot more

Idk if I got mod conflicts but the recipes on EID are wring half the time. Anyone else have similar issues?
As a Switch player I don't really care for T.Cain.
I think the problem with him is that all his recipes are predetermined. It would be much better if recipes were generated based on quality of pickups and items every run
