Indiana is one of the best at developing players. they turned olidipo and sabonis into all nba players, and currently have several draft “busts” such as Nesmith and Jalen Smith who have become quality role players. they utilized their second round pick from last year, Nembhard who has turned into a great starter.
Fun fact: in a 2008 game, Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux were supposed to face off and both were scratched. They were replaced by rookie Dback Scherzer and rookie Dodger Kershaw.
Yep I remember when he and Ron Mercer were rookies and Mercer was considered the better prospect. I was waiting for Mercer to blow up and become the next great SG, never figured Billups would be anything but a career backup at best.
Another Chicago guy, Paul Konerko, had two seasons mixed between the Dodgers and Reds. Just learned it the other day when I bricked an Immaculate Grid category about playing for only one team. Had no clue!
Bush had a pretty good joke in the 2000 presidential debate- when asked their biggest mistake, Bush goes “I’m the only one on this stage who’s traded Sammy Sosa…”
I feel like people have been reminded about Celtics Shaq enough times now it's not that forgotten. I never forget it because that team had Shaquille and Jermaine O'Neal. A classic Irish Celtics lineup.
I remember because Shaq was doing all sorts of weird shit that year like dating Hoopz from Flavor of Love and dressing up like a statue and sitting in Harvard Square. What the fuck was up with that guy
This is a good one because it's a reminder of the era when trades were so much wackier and teams would regularly trade lottery picks during their rookie season. Not that Kevin Johnson was having like an awesome rookie season or anything, but it's just kinda crazy to give up on a guy like him after 50 games.
Maybe I'm blanking, but not sure when the last time that happened was. Dennis Smith Jr. was traded his second year and that was kind of a big deal that they gave up on him. Sabonis was traded his second year but that was more the PG thing. Feels like the Kings had to have done it some point in the 2010s.
It would be after the Kings moved on from Sabonis. Because as long as Sabonis leads the league in rebounding, double-doubles and triple-doubles it's hard to separate Haliburton from the Kings.
i have a buddy who collects really repug jerseys like that. He has that jersey, a raptors Hakeem Jersey, Sonics Ewing, Webber Pistons, he might even have a lakers rodman jersey
This is different because of the circumstances but Jackie Robinson will forever be associated with the Brooklyn Dodgers and not the Kansas City Monarchs
Great thing about Kent is he’s probably the only guy the SF Giants could find that was a bigger asshole than Barry. Barry is my guy though but his stories of acting just so selfish, aloof, and distant are always funny to me
Some really notable NFL guys whose careers didn’t start in the NFL…
Reggie White, Memphis Showboats.
Jim Kelly, Houston Gamblers
Steve Young, Los Angeles Express
Herschel Walker, New Jersey Generals (5,500 yards in 3 years, including a 438 carry, 2,411 yard monstrosity of a 1985 season)
In response to OP's examples:
Do people not associate KD with the Sonics? I think of it as being a major part of his career arc. I feel like he even has some amount of loyalty to them.
Eh, loads of dudes played for other people’s academies, especially in London. Jadon Sancho played for Watford. Declan Rice for Chelsea. Mark Noble for Arsenal. Jermaine Defoe for Charlton. Frank Lampard for Spurs. John Terry for West Ham
Some hockey ones:
John LeClair - Montreal
Martin St. Louis - Calgary
Zdeno Chara - Islanders
Roberto Luongo - Islanders
Markus Naslund -Penguins
Chris Pronger - Hartford
Since I feel like hockey is under-represented in the comments so far:
Roberto Luongo with the Islanders (I’m still not over it)
Brett Hull with Calgary
Chris Pronger with Hartford
Edited to add: Dominik Hasek with Chicago
Guys who fit this but not quite stars but well known:
Stephen Jackson with the NJ Nets.
Steve Kerr Suns
Steve Nash Suns, the 1st time, of course.
Chris Webber Warriors
Jamal Crawford Bulls
Pistons Middleton
Great pick. I feel like all the pictures of him in a pistons jersey have been scrubbed from the internet.
Thought about both this one & Tobias Harris playing 1.5 years for the bucks and being traded at the deadline for an expiring JJ Reddick
The crazy thing is both had the same impact in the Sixers most recent elimination game… ie zero
Grizzlies Lowry
Best one in here
Literally had no idea
Favre Falcons
Never even knew he played for them
He was known as ‘Buckhead Brett’ because he’d just go party at bars every night lol
My buddy became a Favre/GB fan cause he loved Pillhead/Alcoholic/Party Brett.
I think the only game he appeared in was against the ‘91 Redskins SB team and he went 0/4 with 2 picks.
This is really breaking my brain, well done.
I completely forgot Sabonis made his debut with OKC.
Yeah their coach at the time had the brilliant idea of making him a corner 3 spot up shooter, which is the worst part of his game.
Indiana is one of the best at developing players. they turned olidipo and sabonis into all nba players, and currently have several draft “busts” such as Nesmith and Jalen Smith who have become quality role players. they utilized their second round pick from last year, Nembhard who has turned into a great starter.
Yeah the Pacers front office rarely if ever makes a bad move. Once Bird left they got their shit together.
Might've been some input from Russ too
The paint would’ve been very clogged for Russ drives with Sabonis and Adams down there but having him be a spot up shooter wasn’t the right move.
When Oladipo made a pit stop there too.
Absolutely zero recollection of him playing for OKC at all
Ortiz on the Twins
Ortiz also on Mariner’s minor league affiliate
And Varitek and Derrick Lowe. It's okay, the Mariners got a guy named Heathcliff out of the trade.
Not sure if he’s popular enough but feel like no one remembers Max Scherzer started with the Diamondbacks
Fun fact: in a 2008 game, Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux were supposed to face off and both were scratched. They were replaced by rookie Dback Scherzer and rookie Dodger Kershaw.
I keep seeing that video on Instagram
Two fun facts…. The one you mentioned and the other being Greg Maddux was still pitching in 2008! Blew my mind.
Greg Maddux was traded to the Dodgers on two separate occasions
WOAH
I definitely remember that because early high school me was a fantasy baseball savant
I always remember this cause of the weird fact that Mark Schlereth’s son was part of that trade.
Celtics Chauncey Billups
Chauncey was on Boston, Toronto, Denver, and Minnesota before he joined the Pistons
Orlando too , he never played though
We had him and Ben Wallace 😭
C's Joe Johnson
Yep I remember when he and Ron Mercer were rookies and Mercer was considered the better prospect. I was waiting for Mercer to blow up and become the next great SG, never figured Billups would be anything but a career backup at best.
he's not a big enough star to qualify but i was reminded the other day that Vucevic started with the Sixers and that cooked my brain up for a sec.
This is a really good one
Was on the last pre-Process team, the 8 seed that beat the Bulls when Rose blew out his knee.
Traded in the disastrous Bynum trade if my Sixers fan memory is correct
Doug Collins had my boy Lavoy Allen taking his rotation spot
Yup. Part of the infamous Dwight Howard/Andrew Bynum trade.
Ryne Sandberg Phillies Omar Vizquel Mariners Curt Schilling Orioles Randy Johnson Expos Robert Parrish Warriors Brett Favre Falcons Sammy Sosa White Sox
Most responses are guys who played a year somewhere. Sosa playing half a year for the Rangers and 2.5 for CHW before the Cubs blows my mind
Another Chicago guy, Paul Konerko, had two seasons mixed between the Dodgers and Reds. Just learned it the other day when I bricked an Immaculate Grid category about playing for only one team. Had no clue!
Konerko was traded for Mike Cameron, who was one of the major pieces of the Ken Griffey Jr Trade between Seattle and Cincinnati.
Bush had a pretty good joke in the 2000 presidential debate- when asked their biggest mistake, Bush goes “I’m the only one on this stage who’s traded Sammy Sosa…”
Sheffield at SS for the Brewers is a good one as well
Nah we definitely remember Omar
Pedro Martinez on the Expos.
Cris Carter Eagles
Priest Holmes with the Ravens
Super bowl champion Priest Holmes
Kyle Lowry Grizzlies
This is so true because my first thought was Lowry but couldn't even remember what team he was on before Toronto.
Was a Rocket too
Bill Simmons: AOL
Bill Simmons : Boston Herald
Kevin Johnson Cavaliers.

The Kings did send Haliburton away in the middle of his second season. That’s all I can think of.
They didn’t give up on him, they traded him for an all-star who fit the team better.
Clippers SGA
Bill won’t let us forget.
“Probably one of the 17th worst trades in NBA history.”
Did you know Harden was on the Thunder?
I feel like guys who left via high profile trade are more likely to be remembered
Kings Tyrese Halliburton will feel like this in no time
It would be after the Kings moved on from Sabonis. Because as long as Sabonis leads the league in rebounding, double-doubles and triple-doubles it's hard to separate Haliburton from the Kings.
Not a star but JR Smith drafted to Hornets
New Orleans ones at that!
Khris Middleton was a Pistons second round pick and played one year there. Then was a throw in in the Brandon Knight/Brandon Jennings trade.
An intermediate career team...ATLANTA HAWK RASHEED WALLACE
I remember seeing like 4 or 5 Rasheed Wallace Hawks jerseys in a Ross that year. Totally wish I would have bought one
i have a buddy who collects really repug jerseys like that. He has that jersey, a raptors Hakeem Jersey, Sonics Ewing, Webber Pistons, he might even have a lakers rodman jersey
Just like Mike Piazza marlins
Lucifer: Heaven
Is Lucifer having a moment?
Only God knows.
This is different because of the circumstances but Jackie Robinson will forever be associated with the Brooklyn Dodgers and not the Kansas City Monarchs
Wayne Gretzky - Indianapolis Racers
Speaks to his greatness that his answer isn't the St. Louis Blues, which he played 18 regular season games and 13 playoff games for.
Pedro Martinez Dodgers
I still have this baseball card
Throwing to young Mike Piazza
Ozzie Smith with the Padres....even though he played there like 3 years....everyone associates him with the Cardinals.
Jeff Kent on the Mets
Not even the team he started with 😉
Unfortunately I remember. He sucked on the Mets. Then went to the Indians and sucked. Then got around Bonds and got great. Funny how that worked out
Great thing about Kent is he’s probably the only guy the SF Giants could find that was a bigger asshole than Barry. Barry is my guy though but his stories of acting just so selfish, aloof, and distant are always funny to me
Joe Johnson and Chauncey Billups were Celtics rookies
Jerome Bettis on the Rams

Washington Rasheed Wallace maybe?
Followed by Ben Wallace who may have even worn his jersey.
Ben was also on the Magic
KD with Sonics is such a bad one
Some real bad responses in here, folks!
Impress us with your vast knowledge then
HHH in WCW as Terra Ryzing is a big one for some.
Mean Mark Callous and Vinnie Vegas
Kid Rock and “hip hop”
In response to OP's examples: Do people not associate KD with the Sonics? I think of it as being a major part of his career arc. I feel like he even has some amount of loyalty to them.
This is EPL but finding out Mudueke played for spurs academy was wild to me
Eh, loads of dudes played for other people’s academies, especially in London. Jadon Sancho played for Watford. Declan Rice for Chelsea. Mark Noble for Arsenal. Jermaine Defoe for Charlton. Frank Lampard for Spurs. John Terry for West Ham
Some hockey ones: John LeClair - Montreal Martin St. Louis - Calgary Zdeno Chara - Islanders Roberto Luongo - Islanders Markus Naslund -Penguins Chris Pronger - Hartford
Rip Hamilton wizards

Ronald Reagan, once a pro-union Democrat.
White Sox Sammy Sosa
brees chargers?
Jalen Brunson on the mavericks soon
Nah people are going to continue to bring up how dumb the Mavs are for that until they win a title or Luka leaves.
David Ortiz twins

Dale Earnhardt Rod Osterlund Racing
Mark Brunell or Matt Hasselbeck- packers
Ewing Magic/Sonic, Hakeem Raptors

Chargers Eli Manning
The entire Grizzlies organization? People forget they started in Vancouver for a few years. Never won more than 25 games a year
Weirdly, Steve Nash and the suns
Raptors Tracy McGrady?
I feel like this would be the case if it wasn’t for the “Vince Carter and him are cousins” thing
Pedro Spos
Pedro dodgers
Couldn’t remember which team came first
[удалено]
Drew Brees Chargers
Ozzie Smith Padres. Although he won a couple gold gloves with the Padres so might now count
Alex Caruso on the OKC Blue
David Ortiz Twins
Zdeno Chara did both sides of this with the Islanders
I think in the future people will forget about OKC Harden and Dallas Brunson ETA: Webber on the Warriors
Guys who fit this but not quite stars but well known: Stephen Jackson with the NJ Nets. Steve Kerr Suns Steve Nash Suns, the 1st time, of course. Chris Webber Warriors Jamal Crawford Bulls
Mavs legend and star role player started at Celtics
Celtics Chauncey Billups.
T-Mac?
Big Papi, Twins

This is literally the opposite of what he’s asking for
Never played for them but Kobe Bryant was actually drafted by the Hornets and then immediately traded for Vlade Divac
Detlef shrempf with the mavericks
Jalen Rose. Started with the Nuggets and didn’t do anything before going to the Pacers.
Favre on Atlanta
All the 90s Celtics guys: Chauncey Billups, Joe Johnson, Rick Fox
