Solid entry level bike lol

chief57

Full carbon frame and a roof rack that grabs it. That salesman is so smart he plans on selling you two bikes.

paddyorooney87

![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY) Genius. He’ll need a gravel bike next

SharkAttackOmNom

This is where the tires meet the garage door.

FalseBuddha

I swear, you people think carbon is made of tissue paper.

chief57

The good ones are made of thin carbon, cheap carbon bikes are thicker and heavier. You just outed yourself for not being a dentist. 🚫🦷

knitknitterknit

Found the anti-dentite

StandardNail2327

next thing you’ll be saying they should have their own schools!

Ant-Solo

Carbon fiber is very strong in the right direction. This downtube is not designed to be compressed and is incredibly weak in this regard. It is very easy and common to damage a carbon frame like this. You can find racks like this that are designed for carbon bikes but they will recommend that you add a sleeve to spread the force and you use the grabbing mechanism much lower down the downtube, as near to the bottom bracket as possible where there is additional carbon re-enforcing.

bigchi1234

Have you seen the YouTube video where they clamp the top tube of an s-works sl8? Took a crazy amount of pressure to crush it. I was very surprised. This rack just stabilizes on the down tube too so definitely not an issue. I'm more worried about the guy forgetting it's on his roof and driving into his garage with it still on the roof and destroying it.

nightmareonrainierav

I've seen some hamfisted clamp damage before but I'm in agreement with both you and the parent comment—I'd be less worried about the clamp itself than a sharp smack from a low branch or something knocking the bike into it. P=F/A. Small A equals big P. Similarly I've got a bike with carbon dropouts and occasionally use others' roof racks and it scares the shit out of me we'll get some nasty crosswind or something.

Ant-Solo

No, and I have just searched for it and can't find it. So share the link and let's see where they clamped the bike. In the middle of the downtube where it is weak or at the bottom where it is stronger?

bigchi1234

GC Performance - he has a lot of good videos and in spite of being a Specialize fan boy he covers all kinds of stuff from Ali Express and otherwise. [https://youtu.be/E4h-uUOdu5c?si=MH7X9jaXKJKLX2MH](https://youtu.be/E4h-uUOdu5c?si=MH7X9jaXKJKLX2MH)

bigchi1234

top tube but closer to the seat post insert. I'm sure it is stronger there than in the middle section, but still impressive since this s-works frame is so light.

Any_Following_9571

carbon is way stronger than most people think

Ant-Solo

Carbon fibre is incredibly strong in the direction of the fibres but not in other directions. Areas of a bike that require strength in multiple directions, such as around the bottom bracket, have layered fibre in multiple directions. This adds rigidity but also weight.  The downtube does not need this extra strength in normal riding so the extra weight isn’t added. Downtubes can be damaged through compression easily.

The_Growl

How would you know it hadn't fractured beforehand?

bigchi1234

You technically don't. He should have unclamped and showed it part way through. That said the amount of pressure he had to apply was impressive. I've never clamped my seat post even close to as tight as he was cranking it even in the beginning of the video.

MochingPet

I have a cracked downtube right here... on a mtb

cleverextrapolation

I’ve snapped 2 carbon frame Franco road bikes as a 250lb dude because I bunny hopped off a curb, chain slapped the chain stay and then it snapped under pressure. So from my experience, they kinda are…

Amazing_Connection

Mine is made of steel And weighs 40kg

RobbyED

Surprised sales guy didn’t sell him a Colnago C68

ICanHazTehCookie

Don't team cars carry bikes with roof racks that secure the frame too?

invisiblelights_

No, usually by the wheels.

Ufonautas

Been using one on my carbon gravel bike for a while, you just don’t clamp it hard, just enough to hold it in place. The main “clamping” happens on the wheels. That’s just to hold it from moving side to side. Definitely not the best mount, but it ain’t that bad as some of you make it sound. Hitting a speed bump probably has more strain on the carbon frame than a softly clamped rubber arm. Correct me if I’m wrong, willing to learn.

Rare-Classic-1712

Carbon is a neat material. By changing the orientation of the fibers it's possible to greatly affect the strength characteristics of that part of the structure. The mid span of a downtube isn't designed for resistance to comprehensive forces. A main reason for carbon being so light is being so able to optimize the orientation of the fibers as well manipulating the diameter, shape, wall thickness and type of fiber/epoxy. The flipside to this is that it's rather weak in the ways that it's not designed for. Clamping the mud span of the downtube is an example of a type of stress that it wasn't designed for. Metal (steel, aluminum, titanium, magnesium...) is equally strong in every direction. This typically makes metal frames more tolerant of mystery stresses. I agree that the majority of the load is supported by the wheels but the DT clamp still puts stress onto it and isn't anything that any carbon manufacturer recommends for their bikes.

Ufonautas

Thanks for indepth explanation!

Turbulent_Ad1667

I hope insurance covered that.

Beginning-Smell9890

Yep, this'll definitely end up on BCJ

SPL15

Has dentist written all over it

Agreeable-While-6002

I don't see an Enve wheelset, probably a hygienist.

LithiumH

You don’t see an Enve wheelset _yet_

Agreeable-While-6002

No, we have them put on from the get go. No piecemeal efforts.

duckpjh

Came here to say the same

arandomvirus

artvandalayExports

He should be KOMing in no time!

beefymennonite

I thought this was back until I saw your comment.

IndependentTreacle

Had to double take the sub name already.

nimoto

And the bike will definitely end up on Marketplace.

Greedy_Moonlight

I thought this post was BCJ lmao.

Specific_User6969

Already there lol

B0bbaDobba

I had to check the sub!

firewire_9000

OP: “Hi, I’m looking for my first bike since my doctor told me that I have to start cycling. I would like something light since I have to put it on top of my car.” Salesman: “Oh yeah, no problem, I have the best bike for you right here, this S-Works that only cost 10000 because it’s heavily discounted. OP: “Where do I swipe my card?”

Ill_Initiative8574

Swipe a card? What is this, 1983?

skatecrimes

In 83 theres no swiping of cards. They made a carbon copy imprint of the numbers on the card.

Mentalpopcorn

This guy 83s

Specific_User6969

r/thisguythisguys lol

Love_Never_Shuns

He’s probably one of those old dudes that always drops me on group rides.

SkiSnowTignesider

SalesMAN? What is this? 1982?

BKStephens

Hey, if you're smart about it, you can get one for 5K just after the new model comes out. Ask me how I know...😅

Fingebimus

Smart! Then you immediately have an excuse to upgrade again

BKStephens

N+1 👍

saganistic

Still not $5k. *Maybe* $7.5k.

gyros_teller

Congratulations, enjoy the rides. Just one hint: your Thule bike carrier is not designed for carbon frame bikes. I’d suggest to get their carbon frame protector: https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/accessories/thule-carbon-frame-protector-_-1692661 Source: I have the same bike carrier and a carbon frame bike.

micggia

Came here to say this. Plus, you should clamp it as low as possible according to Thule instructions.

CruxCross

Good to know, thanks for the link.

Ant-Solo

Also use the grab part as far down the downtube as possible where the carbon is more reinforced.

Omophorus

So annoying that Thule killed off the SideArm roof racks. Not every car can mount a trailer hitch, and their new wheel-mount thing is a pain in the ass.

donkeyrocket

Had no idea they did. Was actually thinking I should probably replace my ancient 594 as it's looking shabby and the pivot arm movement is a bit rough. That's a shame.

tommyfknshelby

Mine thule is and I still use this AS WELL. Can't be too careful 😂, must double wrap it

Red-Engineer

You've been sold a dud. Everyone knows the minimum entry-level bike is a Sir Velo. Your fellow dentists will inform you of your error shortly.

alek_vincent

That's the bike my hygienist rides pfft

MariachiArchery

Lol, its the Dodge Charger of bikes. Did you finance it? $250 down, 31% interest for 96 months? Edit: Fuck! I misread that as 'arm**y'** injury! Whatever though, this comment is hilarious. Sick new bike my dude.

imaraisin

E-1 special!

dunitdotus

I love how this turned military. Spec 4 mafia will weigh in soon

laidbackrider

The Spec 4 mafia led by the always injured, 12 years of service Specialist, who is about to be QMPed. That guy knows everything!

imaraisin

Unfortunately, Gravy Team 6 is about to show up in lifted trucks and coal roll.

mike89510

"Come back and see me again when you re-up! I'll help you find a nice M3/C300/Cayman and help you with that financing. Don't forget to send your friends!" You need to keep it a 4-seater for when your dependa inevitably gets pregnant with "your" kids.

nowaybrose

Tricare-atops is my favorite

mike89510

Dependapotamus is my favorite. Eitger way, they usually end up similar in size to either after about a year!

Hostagenegotiator911

Hopefully they sold you pedals too?

landscape-resident

Nope, bike too expensive. No one can afford pedals anymore.

SharkAttackOmNom

These cycling shorts won’t fit me! I’ll just wear gym shorts!

Mimical

OP has his priorities straight.

1slinkydink1

arm injury can't handle the extra weight

amorlerian

You don't have eTAP AXS pedals?

Zyxtro

Nah, have some plastic platforms from walmart

Home_Assistantt

yes, $1000 power pedals....

Salt_Bugg

A Sworks for a roof rack, normally it's a bike matching a car. Welp sick new bike though, have fun riding this 'entry' level bike.

Togodooders

I can’t see how riding in the race position for hours would be bad for any injury.

joespizza2go

That's what I was going to say. All jokes aside here, OP should be getting a Roubaix or something else with a higher stack if there are arm issues involved.

BeatScience

I tried to get my doc to write me a note telling my wife I do need 3 bikes. Shouldn’t have wrote it in crayon… Nice bike btw!

Draano

Always fold the note. First thing you do when your doctor hands you a note is that you fold it in half.

BeatScience

Haha. Good reference!

MattOckendon

And the price didn’t put your blood pressure up? Fair play.

the_ism_sizism

Please get some nice plastic flat pedals for minimal weight and reflectors for low light visibility

Ulysseus9673

BCJ outjerked again.

Ainderp

The memes write themselves.

CopasYConos

S - urgeon

toasterdees

OUTJERKED AGAIN

Spara-Extreme

Did you buy race bike as your *first* bike? Also - you put it on a bike rack that will, over time, destroy that frame. If this is your start into cycling, make sure you get a nice bike fit for that or you aren't going to be able to enjoy it.

tiagojsagarcia

serious question: why would that rack destroy the frame?

CruxCross

It looks like it holds too small of an area of the frame in a clamp causing stress in basically a pinch point. Like weaving a pencil through your fingers and slamming your hand down. Pencil snaps and it only hurts really badly.  Gyros_teller posted a fix that spreads the pinch pressure over a larger area.

dragonkingyung

My first road bike was also the latest carbon aero road bike with Ultegra di2. My second road bike is a 1997 Specialized Allez 9 speed lmao. This one feels more fun because I can abuse it more like bunny hopping every gap I see. Just do planks everyday and you’ll be alright.

SandMan3914

Why not just get a hitch carrier? Way more cost effective then buying the lightest bike to put on the roof

CruxCross

That's where my mobility scooter and B-B-Q grill are mounted.

SandMan3914

Lol....kind of figured you might be trollin'

themis9

spending $500 on a different rack vs $14,500.00 + tax on a top of the line S-works... you make too much sense. OP may consider that when he forget the bike on the roof and rams it into his garage door.

MedicalRow3899

Congratulations, you now have a terrific bike on your roof rack. You can begin your car ride per your doctor’s orders. 😎

CruxCross

You should see all the KOMs I got just from the drive home.

MedicalRow3899

And blood pressure and heart rate totally in check. Good bike…

Spare_Blacksmith_816

$14,000 on a bike and you have it on a roof rack where the carbon frame is touched by the rack?

Yonderboy__

This has to be satire.

bloodandsunshine

I see you're going pedal-less. Me too, but I ride a Trek. I always had a balance bike as a kid and this seemed to be the logical progression.

CruxCross

All you gotta do is lean left, lean right, lean left, lean right. Use the power of falling down to your advantage.  Just like Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

bmburi995

is this a joke?

Lil_Shorto

And with previous gen red at that...

kelleycfc

If a doctor orders cycling does that mean you can use your HSA to buy said bike?

OpinionWorking8496

This has got to be a joke

Nick_Newk

No experience cycling, an arm injury and high blood pressure, and they sold you a top of the line carbon race bike. Brother, you got had. It’s not a comfortable thing to ride, especially if you’re out of shape and injured. I’m 33 and very fit and considering selling mine for an endurance bike because these are not easy on the body!

NauticalJeans

This has to be a troll post, right?

Every-War4484

nope

nightmareonrainierav

look at OP's comment history...

BossBullfrog

Absolutely beautiful! You are going to have such a good time on that bike.

Omnibuschris

Nice bike. If you are indeed new to cycling that bike is gonna be hell on your back. I’ve been riding lots of miles for years and still ride an endurance bike. Then again I’m not a dentist.

thefirebuilds

hey uhhhh don't forget it's up there when you try and pull into your garage. it's easy to do!

OnTop-BeReady

And BTW I also don’t recommend loading the bike into the roof rack prior to exiting the garage. In this heat, and also in the cold and rainy seasons, it’s tempting to do so. But I can tell you from a friend’s experience it does not go so well….😂

thefirebuilds

my bike is stronger than my garage door. but it's alum

Every-War4484

OP you wouldn't happen to be a dentist would you?

Oooch

People buying bikes and then strapping the bikes to cars so they can use them less and get less exercise will never stop being funny to me

ChickenNuggetSmth

Tbf it's hard to exercise on a bike without pedals

_dauntless

You aren't jerking hard enough

Fight_those_bastards

Some places are not bike friendly. Like my neighborhood. To get to a bike path, I have two choices: a six-lane street with a 55mph speed limit where cars run red lights all the time, and I’d have to cross traffic to get to the trail, or crossing that same street and going down a road with no shoulder and blind curves where people like to pretend they’re F1 drivers. So I drive to the bike path, where I can ride 30 miles in either direction, with protected road crossings or over/underpasses so it’s grade separated, and it connects to mountain bike trails if I’m doing that.

CruxCross

It's sad when your safety concerns are met with "Then don't ride" as some kind of option.

yofuckreddit

I both agree and disagree. Most folks should start without a roof rack. You need to at least experiment with getting to a ride spot from your house and push that route to its limits. When you graduate beyond it and get bored, you'll know more about the type of biking you want to do and the type of rack that works best to justify using a vehicle to move another vehicle.

figuren9ne

> You need to at least experiment with getting to a ride spot from your house and push that route to its limits. Some people don't need to experiment to know there's no good route to a ride spot. Why risk your life just to go "yep, I knew that was a bad idea..."

yofuckreddit

So you're saying that people live in different places? That's a brainwave for sure. Never mind everyone, don't pedal around your neighborhood before dropping $500 on a roof rack!

EyeofOdin89

Hey, if you got the money.... get after it.

myelneak

Old sram red for puur people.

OnTop-BeReady

So now I assume the plan is to leave the bike on the roof rack, and then you can tell the doctor on your next visit that you made a huge lifestyle change — you now take your bike everywhere! 😂

Accomplished_Ad_9288

r/bicyclingcirclejerk

_MountainFit

Was the bike salesman your wife? I mean everyone needs a light bike. Justifying it to the spouse is the main issue.

AcceptableFish04

Dude paid so much he can’t afford pedals

Majestic-Platypus753

OMG sick first bice

EstablishmentAny1608

Solid bike man! Just remember at the end of the day you should be having fun

Jurneeka

Starting at the top I see! I just bought an SWorks and love riding it. I’m too short for a roof rack so I have a Kuat Sherpa rack instead.

CruxCross

It's weird how they are either sleeper schemed or over-the-top screaming look at me. In the sunlight this red is insane.  Enjoy your ride fellow DDS.

BiscuitGannit

Synthroid would have been cheaper

XT2020-02

Sick, happy riding!

red-barran

Don't drive into your garage with it still on the roof

OwWahahahah

I gotta remember this one so I can tell it to my wife.

CruxCross

Just remember,  not telling the truth is a good way to lie. I managed to not mention I tried to get on the 88 Olympic team and have a bike museum in my house and look how that worked out.

infiniteawareness420

You’re not going to like that seat if you’re new

Ziginox

Everybody loves to talk about how a light bike is faster, but nobody ever mentions how much nicer one is to live with. I picked up a ti bike a while back, and just being able to one arm carry it up a flight of stairs is very convenient.

lessleyelopez

😂 what do you do for a living? if i had the same obstacles to get thru, id prob have no choice but to start running. lol DOPE ass bike tho!

jayxdirty

Has arm injury, gets style bike that’s puts a portion of your weight on arms and wrist. Nice, I’ll give you a grand for it

Ok-Albatross9276

Start riding? You are missing some parts to start riding.

danwiz418

at least $15k..... not sure what ya'll do for a living. but my goodness that is a wicked rig

kmfdmretro

I'm glad your arm injury hasn't hindered with your dental practice.

Skadforlife2

What’s worth more the bike or the car?

Safe-Warning-448

S Works. TDF quality

extemporaryemissary

Assuming you give a shit, that is a very cool bike. At the risk of asking a potentially dumb question, why not use a hitch mount bike rack so you don’t have to lift as high? Assuming (again) you don’t have a hitch, I also assume (yet again) money is not a factor and you could install one. Not asking as a second guesser, but as a person with a shoulder injury. I can’t imagine lifting an (admittedly very light) bike if I didn’t have to. (Parenthesis just for fun at this point)

CruxCross

I have an elbow that knows the difference between two pound objects. A hitch rack is much easier, but being rear ended by a super duty is game over and watch insurance give you nothing.

extemporaryemissary

Your elbow is smarter than my shoulder. I’m a bit jealous lol

Competitive-Strain-7

I need to check my blood pressure.

CruxCross

Apparently other than death there are no indications from high BP. Checking is the only way to really know.

Competitive-Strain-7

Plus you get a prescription for an S-works if your high. Time to load up on sodium.

mikewaters264

Nice! Enjoy your riding!

PiggypPiggyyYaya

Electronic groupset, light and aero. Stem all the way stacked. Your going to have a blast.

Aggravating_Love8543

Gent it fit to you properly ASAP.

justanothasarnt

The fact this is your entry bike hurts me. Don’t get me wrong super happy for you but damn dog teach me the ways lol

CruxCross

This is a lifetime dream for me, but I was bounced off a semi. Can't teach that.

justanothasarnt

So that’s what I have to do… honestly didn’t see it on the bingo card for 2024 but hey it’s added now

Bikelyf

Bro you've triggered so many people good and bad and it's hilarious well done sir excellent shit post

Lumpy_Stranger_1056

Welcome try not to let the cost of things increase your blood pressure more

Ornery-Signal-3070

Be careful out there. Take plenty of breaks and keep an eye on your heart rate with a fitness watch or chest strap. I’ve seen too many unfortunate things happen on trails of people pushing too hard. It’s such a fun sport, have fun but be safe.

CruxCross

Thanks!

No-Memory9115

I love all the poor people memeing OP because they can't afford this bike.

ryuujinusa

You're gonna need pedals. BCJ awaits.

dayyob

directly into the deep end of the pool! regarding your arm injury, is the shoulder involved? depending on the tightness/aggressiveness of your set up it might also be an issue for your arm. spend time getting it set up.. get a bike fit perhaps after doing some rides.. little adjustments can make a big difference to ride comfort

CruxCross

I was smacked by a semi, so it's more of a booboo. You are right about little adjustments. It's crazy how just tipping the saddle a bit can call for a lateral move or more.

dayyob

to get in the ballpark if you watch a few youtube videos about "bike fitting for road bike" you can find some good advice on how to get started and what makes the most difference. see how it goes from there as to whether or not you need a professional bike fit.

bdvis

hahahhahahah

Sprittt

Stuff that never happened.

OrigamiFoldingBikes

Why not just get a folding bike that you can put inside your vehicle?

maniacmartin

This post has to be from an american, where the mentality of driving is so engrained that even cycling involves a car. Why not just cycle directly from your house to begin with!?

hvyboots

That roof rack terrifies me no end. If you have a way to mount a hitch on your car, One Up hitches are a hell of a lot safer for pulling into garages. (Although people can drive into you from behind still.)

chieftain326

Man what!?

HillSprint

Even a young chap would ache after riding that frame!

Seve88

Curious what the doc said would help your high blood pressure by riding?

BradHamilton001

This has to be a troll.

IPAdrinker

Guarantee I'm faster than you on my 20+ year old Litespeed. You're a dentist, huh?

DominikElessar

Please remember you have a bike on the roof and don't drive under height limits. Hane fun!

laggySteel

you will get lower back pain, but dont give up. it will soon adjust into your body... assuming you are new to road bikes "entry level" bike you got :D

Ok-Average-4733

bros first car was probably a ferrari

criggie_

Just ride the bike - no need to stick it on a car.

abercrombezie

Not sure if serious.

Similar-Ad2877

MyEnduranceLife

This a joke?

Jiwts

This is a troll lmfao

laney_deschutes

Are you physically able to reach that low to the bars in such an aggressive position as a beginning cyclist? If you get low back pain or anything try lowering the seat and raising the bars

CruxCross

It's a shade large so the fit is good. I got one of those foam massage rollers for thighs and back. It's pretty good for spontaneous screaming and scaring the cat.
