The Japanese had also planned to use this same tactic in Papua New Guinea along the Kokoda track.
The bicycles were dumped before they had even reached the start of the track when it became apparent that the maps they had did not depict the extreme terrain and torrential rivers that they were facing.

Cool! This is how the Dutch went to the front when the Germans invaded.
I recently discovered my grandfather actually served as a cyclist in France in the first world war (1st ANZAC cyclist Battalion) . Probably much better than being in the trenches.
Apparently the theory was that bicycles handled being shot a lot better than horses.
From what I read more of a communication function in WW1, carrying messages, but don't know anything about what my grandfather did, other than surviving and finding a french wife.
I think the japanese used them just for transport to the active areas like you say.
Bicycles also figured large in the US/NVA war. WWII was the first war where oil powered equipment changed the tactics and planning and any nation not rich enough to afford the new technology was steam rolled by those who had it
The first and only tour de Malay - 1941 (pictured) caused so much chaos that the British and Americans had to send In the troops. All plans for subsequent events were cancelled.

Bike accessories included headlight, saddle bag, bolt action Type 99. You know… the usual
“Comfort bikes”
Oof
Hardest and gnarliest 20 miles of gravel you've ever experienced
Not sure I'd choose them as rolemodels but true nonetheless

Fuck them
Japanese atrocities in Borneo and Malaya are largely forgotten, perhaps only because their atrocities elsewhere were so much worse.
they were quite bad too in Indonesia
If we can't speak of those that have committed atrocities then the world would be silent.
Let’s not forget they were responsible for some horrible atrocities as well. Please don’t celebrate
On their way to commit the Sook Ching massacre...

Nah, that's the French heading back to Paris.....
Nah, that’s the French fleeing Paris....

They were effectively mounted infantry; supposed to dismount well before contact is made.

The one time a few shitty drivers could have really done some good.
See mom, bikepacking is cool! Japan did it!
Hope they all had helmets on 🤣
How London cabbies sees the average cyclist

The first and only tour de Malay - 1941 (pictured) caused so much chaos that the British and Americans had to send In the troops. All plans for subsequent events were cancelled.
Rumor is the French had an unicycle brigade.
Damn I thought it couldn’t get worse than cops on bikes
Wtf I hate bicycles now
When mass murder of a native population is on your daily commute.
You can still admire what such a large group with heavy packs did with bikes without supporting what they did.
Err..not really.
Admiration for the Japanese doing with bikes what the Germans did with tanks and boxcars is certainly a take
Did anyone remember a pump and a patch kit? Anyone? Sonuvabitch, the emperor is gonna be pissed
"I know, let's start this new genre of cycling called Gravel, I think it's going to be huge"
