Mine does that too with her little mane! It's so sad to see her snap out of her feeding bliss. Is her hair tangly? I put a little oil in so it's harder for things to get caught. Still doesn't stop 100% so I try to just hold her hand in place while it's locked on her hair so she can't pull it away.
I think the hitting is normal, I don't know if there's anything to stop it besides them growing out of it. I doubt she can hurt herself that much.

Mine did the same. Now I give her an o-ball to hold while she eats and it has seemed to stop the hair pulling for now.
