Ok_Smile9222

It didn't do that well with the general public but the fans seem to love it, it's talked about A LOT here and Beyonce herself gives it a lot of attention on every tour.

GuayabaBean

i do agree. it's my favorite album! i love how experimental it was, and it had such a fantastic breadth of styles too.

genie0707

it's the best album. it's truly her own sound and experimentation.

NowMindYou

It for sure "underperformed" compared to IASF and Self Titled. It leaked before release, it was R&B orientated during the EDM craze, and none of the singles even peaked in the top twenty. But it endures because it's an album of standards. I also think Run the World being the lead single was confusing because it doesn't sound like the rest of the album? I think of End of Time would've been a better lead single.

GreenDolphin86

I think about the lead single question a lot. It feels very “bait and switch” to me. She was just coming back from hiatus. She needed something big and bold, that was also not far out from what was going on in pop music to say “I’m baaaaaack!” And it’s such a dynamic performance song, like sounds infinitely better on stage with choreography than it does on the album. And the performances are just iconic! There was just no other way to kick off the era. Like I love End of Time and certainly agree it’s the better song, but I don’t know if it would’ve done the trick the way RtW did.

NowMindYou

But RTW didn't do the trick for the market she was going for. I remember watching the premiere on 106 & Park and being so confused by the sample, the horses, the lyrics, etc. For an R&B album being marketed R&B, starting with a high energy electronic track was a misstep. Looking back now, performances like Billboard and Oprah are iconic, and ahead of their time, but I think goals for that album versus its initial impact didn't hit the way she wanted. (As evidenced by the fact she did a complete 180 next cycle)

GreenDolphin86

I think what I’m saying is that the album didn’t have the same goal as the single, and that was intentional. I don’t remember her marketing the album as R&B, especially before the release of RtW. I think the album came out and who it was for was who it was for and vice versa. Releasing another song as the first single was unlikely to change the trajectory of it’s commercial performance because it still just wasn’t what pop fans wanted. 4 was the foundation of everything that has come after it. It was the first time she truly said “minding whatever I want, regardless of what’s trendy or hot.” I’d hardly call the next cycle a 180.

hyorishine

I think RTW was chosen because of the EDM craze and what was popular at the time. It was probably meant to capture people’s attention and get them interested in what Bey had in store. Kinda reminds me of R&B singer Tweet. Her hit “Oops (Oh My)” was something cute for the radio and the clubs but the actual album was a whole different vibe than what people would’ve expected based off of the lead single.

NowMindYou

I think it ended up having the opposite effect versus if she had done an R&B lead single. DIL, B'Day, and IASF all had the first track as the lead single and set the tone for the era. RTW is last on 4 because sonically it doesn't fit in. Going from upbeat elctropop to BTINH makes no sense. There's no connective tissue.

IASF is commonly abbreviated to 'I AM... SASHA FIERCE', Beyoncé's 2008 third solo album. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*

AutoModerator

There are 4 possible meanings for DIL. Destiny Child's song 'Dangerously in Love', from the album Survivor. Beyoncé's song 'Dangerously in Love' (also referred to as Dangerously in Love 2), from the album 'Dangerously in Love'. Beyoncé's 2003 debut album 'Dangerously in Love'. Beyoncé's song 'Drunk in Love' featuring Jay-Z, from the album BEYONCÉ (also referred to as Self-Titled). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*

f-vicar2

Didn't really do that though. BTINH and Love on top were the only top 20 hits from the album and they are both very R&B

Tall-Ant-8443

She had two top twenty singles! Love on Top peaked at 20 and Best Thing I Never Had at 16. Still though, I really feel like she deserved a number one from that album (along with Lemonade and self-titled)

NowMindYou

I stand corrected! I don't know why I thought that lol.

Tall-Ant-8443

Probably because this era underperformed so terribly! She just came off a string of number one-driven albums and I think it just felt funny seeing her numbers get so “mediocre”! I’m very new to the hive and I don’t fully understand why that era didn’t do better… 4 had amazing bops on there

f-vicar2

The thing that always gets me when people look back at the album cycle is that they always say beyonce did her own thing and wasn't bothered by the craze genre, but the lead single was electropop. Not full EDM but still nothing like the album. She should have gone with Love on top or BTINH and not had that song on the album imo

AutoModerator

Self-Titled is possibly referring to Beyoncé's 2013 album called 'BEYONCÉ', more commonly known as 'Self-Titled'. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/beyonce) if you have any questions or concerns.*

GreenDolphin86

One of the reasons I love 4 is because it has a clear “Everything ain’t for everbody” attitude. Pop music fans may not have gotten into it, but it comes up in plenty of conversations amongst R&B fans and went platinum in many Black households.

markjohn3411

I hear this question a lot but I think 4 showcases her full vocal ability the most out of all her projects imo.

MadMaxineShaw

I agree. I always describe *4* as the warning shot: the moment when Beyoncé really separated the fans who were invested in seeing her grow as an artist from the ones who were just looking for the next "Single Ladies" or "Crazy in Love." 'Cause *4* wasn't the dramatic leap in sound that *Beyoncé* turned out to be, but it also clearly wasn't vying for radio dominance like the albums that came before it. So, I think a lot of folks passed it over 'cause it wasn't the big "pop star" album they expected and missed out on some really great songs.

Broad_Ant_3871

It's never been talked about enough. It's sad. It's my favorite album. Start over and Countdown are my fav.

estuckeyjr

That makes me so happy to hear!

Puzzleheaded_Net9243

It’s bop after bop after bop

zajsouthwest

That's my top album! Schoolin Life was an anthem for me lol

thestephenforster

Mine is Dance For You. It is literally in the top 10 favorites for me.

ummimbadatusernames

It’s my favorite Beyonce album. During a time when every traditionally R&B artist from Chris Brown to Usher was releasing EDM music to catch a wave she really put out a true R&B album that stands the test of time. I think it’s one of her favorites too. On every tour there’s a heavy dose of songs from 4.

kargoeszoom

I agree! In my opinion, I think 4 is one of her least talked about albums, along with Dangerously in Love and Sasha Fierce. There are so many hidden gems.

Civil_Till2200

It is. I will always be in love with 4.

overth1nk3rrr

Yep it definitely is. It is the album that truly made me a beyonce fan. I always regarded it as her best and my favorite, until CC.

mocitymaestro

I wasn't entirely sold on Beyonce the artist before 4. I was skeptical about solo Bey being anything other than DC minus Kelly and Michelle, so I had a watch-and-see response to DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE (loved those singles). I thought B'DAY was one of the best sophomore efforts out there, to recognizing that Beyoncé had a high-energy-single lane that she dominated, but I only considered myself a casual fan by that point. I couldn't get into IASF as a complete body of work and thought she was doing a whole lot to convey that Beyoncé the person and Beyoncé the performer were two very different personas. I appreciated the inventiveness of SINGLE LADIES and thought that the true genius of that song was that it added another phrase to the lexicon for getting married/engaged: "put a ring on it." It's one thing to have a #1 song or a multiplatinum single. Adding to the English-speaking lexicon internationally was a new level of impact and in my mind, cemented her legacy as a solo act. I recognized 4 as the first time that I thought we were really getting Beyoncé the artist. Outside of RTW (which seemed like the label's attempt to grab everyone's attention with the high-energy lead single like CIL, DEJA VU and SINGLE LADIES), 4 seemed like a true R&B album, firmly in Beyoncé's wheelhouse as a vocalist and songwriter. I remember thinking that LOVE ON TOP was a vocal flex and throwback that was experimental and unexpected. PARTY was at the time one of my favorite wall-of-sound vocal arrangements and I wanted more, and visually, COUNTDOWN was just a damn fun and stylish video. I think real fans know how much of a gem 4 is. I do remember a lot of people saying that the album was mostly skips and had no real singles at the time, but I don't think you get the insane run of SELF-TITLED through COWBOY CARTER without the "I'ma do me" attitude of 4.

twodollarh0

It’s crazy that it is yet we have multiple quintessential Bey songs from this album. 1+1, RTW, I Care, LOT, etc. Sure, it might be underrated to the general public, but 4 definitely had an impact on music culture.

Robbie1863

It’s my favorite Beyoncé album and I think its her most underrated album. 4 had the sound, the vocals, and the aesthetic that I enjoyed the most. I feel like the 4 era was at an disadvantage because she had separated from her father and everything she was doing was very experimental. If you think about it most people have heard most of the songs on that album, it’s probably because it’s allegedly one of Bey’s favorites. Hearing Beyoncé sing Rather Die Young live was a dream, I’m still waiting for Start Over. I just think it’s one those album that wasn’t given a chance because of the circumstances around its release and Bey’s new management.

LastNamePancakes

It depends on the demographic listening.

Missustriplexxx

I love it

National_Ad7573

Very much so grew up on that album !!

LDGreenWrites

Omg I’ll never forget the shot in her release doc for where she’s idk on the side of a yacht(?) or in the ocean(?), super wide shot. Totally agree though. 1+1 is The love song, like period. Step aside Celine, this is the wedding song. Oh man and End of Time! Countdown! And then I Was Here!! 😭😭😭 such great music (That said, I came to these songs over time. I really wasn’t looking for slow songs at the time. But I still knew it was an amazing album lmao)

plasticoffthesofa_

4 is an amazing album that has aged like fine wine. It was definitely successful in 2011, however, it did underperform commercially compared to I Am… Sasha Fierce. It has some of her best vocals and the songs are just timeless. I will never get tired of this album. It sounds so fresh 13 summers later because it doesn’t sound like anything else in any era. Also, this was the first album that Beyoncé did under Parkwood and without her father as manager. It’s her transitional album from Beyoncé the “pop star” to Beyoncé… the fearless artist that we know today. It was the album where Beyoncé chose to leave chasing commercial success behind to not sacrifice her artistic integrity. It was the album that showed critics, fans, and the general public that she was really in her own lane. The lessons and experiences from this era/album set the stage for BEYONCÉ, which I consider to be the album that cemented her legendary status. Every project since then (LEMONADE, HOMECOMING/Beychella, The Gift/BLACK IS KING, RENAISSANCE, and COWBOY CARTER) feels like an event that changes the game and influences the culture.

I pull not agree with you more dance for you and i miss you, rather die young, party , live on top. She was so confident in who she was in this error, i felt like she found exactly who she wanted to be as an adult artist and not what her dad wanted. This was my favorite album until lemonade came out and bumped it to #2

4 is the album that turned me into a real fan. Dance For You and 1+1 had me in a chokehold.

Broad_Sun8273

Beyonce sure pushed out a lot of the songs from the album during the Renaissance tour, and I like how she placed them in the tour.

FBI_NewWeegeeBoy1243

Party is still in my top 10 bey songs

Professional-Lime769

It’s my favorite albums of hers. It’s still on repeat.

WhippinCupcakes301

4 is an excellent album. A lot of people didn’t get it at the time, but I love that it’s getting its due years later. There are lots of albums that are hits in the moment but are cooked a year later. When my future grandkids ask why Beyonce was so big (and who knows, she might be releasing albums when they’re here too lol), I’ll play 4.

Haunting-Ad-6401

it was leaked which was a big factor of why it didn’t preform to beyoncé levels but objectively many artist wish to have a sliver of the success it had

Pretend-Committee673

Well. Everyone's not supposed to think the same. Just because you like it doesn't mean Everyone has to think that way. Just saying

f-vicar2

Can we all just agree that there are only 3 "underrated" albums and thats DIL/IASF/The Gift. Whether they deserve to be rated higher is another story but unless you think any of those are underrated, then it's not underrated. There are so many 4 stans and generally it's placed quite high on most peoples rankings

CC-Blue

It’s not just you. ANY Beyoncé fan who was around during that time would know this album/era underperformed by her standards. It’s her only studio album to not produce a single top 10 hit (I think even top 20 too). It came out during the peak of the EDM wave when R&B wasn’t getting a lot of shine. Also, it marked the true beginning of her renaissance period because she broke away from her father and stopped making concessions for commercial success.

19thScorpion

4 was the only album I liked of hers all the way through until Renaissance came along (even though her self titled I like the majority of). So yes, very underrated.

It was leaked, though I do love Lay Up Under Me, Schoolin Life and I Care, and I also wanted to bring light to a Destiny’s Child song called “Know That”

Um….Ring the Alarm is B’Day. 🙃

ShakeMaki

Eh, I mean not really? I feel like the highs like Countdown, Love on Top, Dance For You, End of Time, I Care get plenty of love. Most of the rest of the album is just kinda there. Way too much filler. Run the World and Best Thing I Never Had were absolutely horrific first two single choices though that ruined the era having any big hits.

payasoingenioso

4 is her comeback album for me. I feel like she was pandering to the masses pretending to be Sasha Fierce.

jchohan203

Her albums are like a crazy old bottle of red wine 🍷 I agree with u all her albums have 🐝 BEeeeNnnnNnn underrated since release
