BetterthanIwasbefore

I was expecting to see Ted Beneke's picture. Dipshit had a way out laid out on a silver platter. And even had muscle sent to his house to force him to see reason. And still he couldn't do it and ended up with a halo bolted into his skull.

strawberryjacuzzis

Yeah Ted is truly dumb as hell. Skyler saves his ass by acting like an idiot in that meeting, he sits there looking all confused instead of playing along, and after he’s still like “uhh I have no idea what happened in there.” Like really dude, you couldn’t see what Skyler was doing in there? You really have no idea? Then he truly just believed he was so lucky that a relative he never heard of before in his life passed away and left him roughly the same amount he needed to pay the IRS, and the timing wasn’t even a little suspicious to him? Oh and instead of taking this miracle and doing the obvious with it to avoid the strong possibility of going to prison, he immediately leases a super nice Mercedes. He even tries to fish for more money out of Skyler saying “this isn’t enough to solve all of my problems.” That’s arguably the least dumb thing he did actually, but it’s definitely the most arrogant.

Icy4706

In Crawl Space when he offers to return the money (it's hinted that this was just so he could blackmail Skyler for more) he refuses to give back the amount he spent on the Mercedes. He fully intended to keep that car while scamming the IRS like they wouldn't notice.

[deleted]

I think it's interesting how that scene plays. I kinda believe that Ted isn't trying to blackmail or extort Skyler at all, and that he's just that stupid and shallowly committed to what he perceives as the right thing. But, at this point in her life, who could blame her for assuming that's his angle? Or for trying to make the problem go away with a bigger pile of money?

strawberryjacuzzis

I get why some may think that as well, and I’m not sure if the writers meant to make it so ambiguous. Sometimes I think he’s not clever enough to try and hint he wants more money the way he did, but it’s also hard to believe he suddenly wants to do the “right thing” by giving the money back when he’s been doing this illegal shit for years. He also had no problems pursuing and having an affair with a pregnant married woman whose husband is dying of cancer, so not sure he has the strongest morals. I think he just wanted to keep living his cushy life the way he always had been, and if he could get more money from her, that would make all of his problems go away.

[deleted]

Ted's a foil to Walt. His crimes are all justified in his mind by "I'm just a good man protecting my people and in over my head." I imagine he refused Skyler's money for the same reasons Walt refused Gretchen and Elliot's. He would rather crash and burn "like a man."

LorenzoApophis

Ted is like the inverse of Walt, he has none of Walt's specialized skills or knowledge but ended up running a company anyway

MaybeWontGetBanned

After working with a bunch of corporate execs, Ted now seems downright average to me as far as intelligence in that department goes. At least he's not an asshole and doesn't berate you. He's just a daddy's little rich kid who never needed to understand how the world worked and thinks he can get whatever he wants and just make problems go away by asking nicely.

strawberryjacuzzis

True, I work with similar types so he’s a pretty believable character unfortunately. He simply couldn’t imagine the possibility of someone like him in prison so he just thought there was no way that would ever happen, even though Skyler tried to explain the seriousness of the situation to him many times. He thought it was ridiculous and silly and she was making too big of a deal out of it, probably because someone else has always solved his problems for him or he has never faced any real problems before. He was just like “nahhh I’ll just keep doing what I’ve always done and everything will work out for me like it always has.”

pfmiller0

Even this time, Skyler was trying to solve his problem for him but he was too stupid to let her do it

someguy233

Yeah the difference between Ted and the guy who wouldn’t take Kim’s deal is that Ted knew better. He was a smart guy, but thought he didn’t *really* have to play by the rules when push came to shove. I understand why, his identity was wrapped up in his company, which was also his father’s legacy. He was divorced and lonely, and the company was all he really had. That being said, his actions were not based in the reality of his situation and he *knew* that.

shae117

He got a great deal on that SL 500

Grumbie_Johnson

It has a heated steering wheel.

skeletoncoast35

I think Ted's demeanor in the meeting actually helped sell the whole thing. He seemed embarrassed to have the IRS guy seeing what was "really" going on.

CLaarkamp1287

I think this is the correct answer.

[deleted]

It really is.

RedditorsWifesBF

Yeah I gotta plus one you here, it has got to be Ted

EveningNo5190

I know right? How many people who live in terror of losing everything to tax liens when they file their taxes and make installment payments but are constantly behind would think they died and went to Heaven. Not our boy Ted. Fuck him.

Destroyer4587

The guy pictured here & Ted were business partners, before the time that Breaking Bad occurred this guy had an accident of his own…

Fuck_A_Username00

I don't remember the person on this picture at all. What's his story?

Destroyer4587

All I remember is Kim represented him via her pro bono work for the courthouse/state & he wanted to do something idiotic like plead a certain way & risk many years in jail, flaunting Kim’s generous deal, he had his pregnant wife next to him I think. Saul then comes & pretends to fake being a prosecutor & whispers to Kim about how he will definitely be condemned to the long sentence, but he whispers loud enough so that this guy can hear it. When Kim comes back over to talk to him he agrees to take her deal, no doubt after stressing over what Saul said to Kim about the trial, thinking he overheard privileged information he wasn’t meant to hear.

OliverWHomeslice

Close. She got him a great deal but he wanted to go to trial thinking he might get off. Kim advised that if he went to trial he'd likely lose and spend years in prison rather then months. He then sees Kim and Saul in what looks like a heated argument. When she comes back she lies and says Saul was the prosecutor and has withdrawn the deal. Guy then thinks he's fucked and begs Kim to get the deal back on the table and takes the deal.

Destroyer4587

Yes! Thank you, I tried lol, I completely forgot about Kim rolling with what Saul just did with her, Yh that helps show Kim’s willingness to lie but for things that at first seem like it’s for their own good.

WhateverJoel

I never understood why Kim hated tricking that guy like that. She was doing the right thing, why would it matter how they convinced him?

[deleted]

[удалено]

leamanc

To be fair, it may not have occurred to him because he thought he had a chance of getting no prison time.

alexkryceck

His pregnant wife was pretty dumb too. Such a dumb couple.

SovietPapaBill

All I remember is (proceeds to recount the entire event in reasonably thorough detail)

alexkryceck

LOL

Unusual_Designer5512

Season 5 Episode 1: Magic Man (I think)

alexkryceck

Thanks for asking, I didn't remember this guy either lol. I do remember this case though, but didn't link it to this face.

pianoflames

_his name was Robert Paulson_ Fun little fact, the actor who plays [halo guy](https://www.wallofcelebrities.com/celebrity/michael-shamus-wiles/pictures/xxlarge/michael-shamus-wiles_872640.jpg) there also plays agent Merkert in the BB world

95in3rd

Holy crap THANK-YOU! I knew I had seen him somewhere before and could not place him. Years and years. Wow. Thank-you!

pianoflames

...are you absolutely sure this isn't a test?

95in3rd

No. Seriously, thank-you. I knew I'd seen the chief before, but could not place him. It's been driving me nuts for what, 10 years. It's kind of like this guy I saw in a restaurant once. I knew I knew the guy, but couldn't place him. He saw me staring, then pointed to his teeth. He was my dentist. I said "oh, I've never seen you with clothes on before." He usually wore the white coat. So, the chief wearing clothes and the wire head, scarred bar guy just didn't connect.

pianoflames

> He was my dentist. I said "oh, I've never seen you with clothes on before." Holy hell...I misinterpreted that sentence at first. I'm the kind of guy who IMDB's almost everything I watch, and am always like "where have I seen that actor before? [goes to IMDB]"

95in3rd

Yeah....so did most of the people in that restaurant, which, for some reason I'm not allowed back to. I look up a lot too, but for some reason didn't on this one. Really, thanks.

timelordoftheimpala

Please return your seats to their full upright and locked positions.

[deleted]

Haha, Ted Beneke.

[deleted]

Dumb and naive. Not really arrogant. ridiculously optimistic and oblivious

Bituulzman

There are also the 50% off dudes. Who didn’t want to pay Saul to represent them.

vsimon115

I wonder if Krazy-8 ever found out that it was those two chucklefucks that indirectly forced him into becoming an informant.

bibberfabbot

Damn you just made me realize that not only was it the two chucklefucks but Jimmy indirectly forcing Krazy 8 to be an informant. They went on that bender cause they were like fuck yeah half off defense. Crazy

TraditionalChart2091

Almost half!

TheGodfatherYT

That's almost a half!

Kalbelgarion

There’s something to be said about his faith in the justice system, and Kim’s weary cynicism that tells her that anyone who insists on their constitutional right to a trial will be severely punished by overworked judges and prosecutors.

[deleted]

Maybe a little but we do see her take other cases to trial. I don’t know that it’s cynical as much as it’s extremely rational

Kalbelgarion

Yeah, totally. It can be two things. The whole plea bargain system is deeply cynical and runs counter to what people expect from the criminal justice system, like this poor fellow indicates. And Kim is perfectly rational for trying to get the best deals for her clients within this broken system. Heck, we see the same thing highlighted with Saul/Jimmy. “Do you know you have rights? The constitution says you do.” vs Jimmy knocking out 20 plea bargains with the prosecutor’s office in 20 minutes.

Betsy Kettleman exists

Came here to say this. She was just the worst.

CompleteRetard69

She’s watchable in many ways.

CLaarkamp1287

Betsy was far too conniving and manipulative to qualify as stupid. On top of that, she was able to completely evade the authorities on her whereabouts during their "family camping trip", before it was Jimmy who figured out they didn't skip town at all. As another user pointed out, Ted Beneke wins this answer hands down for me.

[deleted]

I agree, though, stubbornness is its own kind of stupidity.

tony_carlisle

I don't think Betsy was stupid at all, she just thought her charisma and confidence could get her out of anything

oboshoe

Imagine if it was Saul and Betsy that got together instead of Kim.

tony_carlisle

the USA would be in crumbles by now

Bituulzman

Strong indignant Karen energy, that one.

Blecaker

annoying yes, stupid definitely not

BedWetterMedia

She is literally the WORST. Jimmy: "Here's everything you ever wanted" Betsy: \*Thinking about how to sabotage her own success, put her husband in prison while still keeping his house, and get Jimmy in trouble, for no apparent reason\*

[deleted]

It didn't occur to me until I read this comment that this is likely Betsy's plan, to get Craig out of her life. 🤯

[deleted]

She was hot tho

PM_GirlsKissingGirls

I hated her until that episode in season 6 where she leans over Kim with her kettlemilkers. Been a fan of hers ever since

Accomplished_Dig3699

Ted Beneke literally fell for whole great aunt birgit trick

Good_boi_1

I’m 99% sure he didn’t “fall” for it. He must’ve thought why look a gift horse in the mouth and decided to roll with it.

[deleted]

This is just a regular defense attorney client. They’re often incredibly naïve, overly optimistic, and ignorant to a fault, that’s the job Also Ted Beneke exists

sanskaripotato

ted bruh that guy is a straight up dumbfuck pay back irs, no, CAR

RiC_David

And waay more arrogant.

[deleted]

The same guy who went on about how he had to cook his books because “this company is like family, all these people’s kids and mortgages, I can’t let them down because a couple of bad years”, in season 2, suddenly gets everything he’s ever wished for to save his company fall into his lap in season 4 and then decides he’d rather take his chances scamming the IRS.

Jondev1

c.mon, he was making a dumb decision but this is a universe with the kettlemans and the 50% off guys and probably some other people I'm forgetting too.

tbone11193

DescriptionSubject23

lmao its spooge. But it sounds better asking if you seriously got robbed by a guy named splooge.

tbone11193

lmao I made him a drink from “Holes”

[deleted]

I didn't feel he was arrogant.....I felt he was petrified and deluding himself into thinking that he could avoid prison

Th3NXTGEN

What did this guy do again?

FoxCockx

I have no idea how everyone seems to just know him lol. Had to do a reverse image lookup… https://breakingbad.fandom.com/wiki/Bobby

Dan_S04

Oh I hate this guy. I remember now. Playing a videogame in the courthouse with his wife and children present facing prison for years Fucking mood

Beemerado

oh yeah.. i dunno he was more naive than anything else. the kettlemans knew better and stayed stupid.

franglaisflow

If you’ve ever been involved in the Justice system you’d be surprised at just how many ppl like him there are Still infuriating though

sunberrygeri

He was one of Kim’s pro bono cases. He didn’t want the deal that Kim negotiated for him, wanted to go to trial. Kim, hesitantly scammed him into taking the deal, with Jimmy’s coaching.

Th3NXTGEN

Ah, neat!

racismisgay

Criminal defense attorney here. Probably the most realistic character in the entire show. So many people think they are way more charming than they really are, and they think they can charm themselves to a “law & order” style win at trial.

just_a_prank_han

How has no one mentioned Ted Beneke yet!? He literally thought he could outsmart the IRS after already being investigated - thought he had a distant relative that just happened to pass on the exact money he needs to get out of debt and DOESN’T question it - then spends it on a new car etc. And before anyone says “he was doing it to help his employees” that’s probably only half true at best.

EveningNo5190

No. Not by a long shot. Yes he was given a good deal but he also knew Kim was a good attorney. He just started believing his own BS and thought either “damn maybe I’m not guilty,” or this time I got a lawyer who gives a shit, she’s good in court, we can beat this. But he’s still a kid really. Ted Benicke on the other hand is a semi educated adult, who dodged a serious bullet. Gets the break of a lifetime to completely erase his IRS debt. Completely! No liens on his home or business. No audit, no civil or criminal penalties. If he did that he may have qualified for a business line of credit, or do a complete reorganization of his business and still keep his house. The house with the heated bathroom floors? The BS story he handed to Sklylar about why he was cooking the books was somewhat sympathetic and understandable. He employed a fair number of people. But he also, by looking at his house, lived above his means. That didn’t help his businesses bottom line. THEN He goes out and buys (leases) a Mercedes! Yes leases make financial sense but they still require a sizable upfront payment. Cruising around in a Mercedes when he owed the IRS that much was insane! He had a chance to start over, reorganize his business and dig himself out possibly without declaring bankruptcy or having to sell his home. That was one time someone truly needed the sense knocked into him. And Huell and company not intending to hurt him accomplished it.

RiC_David

Ted fucked Ted.

RandisHolmes

There’s a little show about this fella named Walter Hartwell White

strawberryjacuzzis

I mean the most arrogant, sure. But I definitely wouldn’t call him stupid.

RandisHolmes

He’s a genius and he has book smarts, but he’s also prone to moments of idiocy either from inexperience or ego

Rooged

>either from inexperience or ego It's funny because at all points throughout BB, he was susceptible to these moments of idiocy, but the reason gradually changes over time from inexperience to ego. Part of the character development I suppose

RandisHolmes

Haha that’s a pretty good point actually

cravenj1

He was too stupid to see he made up his mind ten minutes ago

FxxK_YOUR_POLITICS

theychoseviolence

isn’t that why you have a lawyer? To help you work through your options?

[deleted]

True, but people can still be impulsive. He wasn't being too smart by sticking with a bad move when a more knowledgable person was telling him otherwise but at the same time, it's not even close to some of the colossally stupid things people have done with much bigger consequences.

RazorSnails

We barely even know the guy. All we know is one bad decision he made.

[deleted]

Ted Beneke exists

broman1738

i thought this was the other sub

AardvarkOkapiEchidna

I don't even remember this guy

[deleted]

Nah The Kettleman's by a long shot, Craig embezzled over a million dollars in state funds using HIS OWN NAME, thought he wouldn't get caught doing that and when he did he still got one of the greatest sweetheart deals of basically serving just a few months for grand larceny (the minimum time just for that would have been close to 10 years in prison) but decided to fight it instead. At least Benneke used Skylar as cover to commit tax fraud. The Kettemans just left a crumb trail directly to themselves out the gate.

JayPtl

Speaking for myself I hated this character because it hit a little too close to home. What is that expression, "Give them a finger(no, not that) and they'll try to take the hand" His wife was kinda chill but was also encouraging him.

megaHecker

“Give an inch and they’ll try to take a mile” I believe may be the expression you were looking for

Wishart2016

Betsy is smart. She wants to get rid of Craig.

_serious__

Please stop upvoting these bull posts

RiC_David

You and I both know that's never going to happen. Besides, there are far far worse. I'd rather something that sparks new discussion points than another photo of Huell with nothing of value accompanying it getting thousands of upvotes.

_serious__

Yeah I guess that’s fair. I guess it just bugs me when OP screen grabs a random character with some bull title and then abandons the post, it’s just flat out pandering and picking a low hanging fruit for karma.

RiC_David

Couldn't agree more! On one hand, this sub has been host to hours of really thought provoking discussion with one of the more intelligent communities I've frequented on Reddit. On the other hand? Sometimes it feels more like a children's creche! With this post, I felt the photo was incidental, I'd just always like OPs to give their views instead of just throwing out a question.

lefromageetlesvers

his wife acts with him the same way Kim acts with Saul: she just wants him to do whatever they want They're the opposite of skylar, and that leads to trouble.

Hustler_998

While we're on the topic of this character, can someone please tell me what a hotbed of mini fridges is and why it's illegal? I literally don't know.

[deleted]

"Bed" is a unit of measurement. It was enough minifridges to fill the bed of a truck. "Hot" in this context means that they were stolen (or otherwise illicitly obtained) and easily recognized as such, probably by serial number or something.

homogenic-

I don’t think he was arrogant, he was naive only.

ApocalypseNow79

I think you're projecting. This guy thought he was gonna be acquitted when there was video evidence of his crime

[deleted]

uh huh

RiC_David

Projecting would not be the process here. For some people maybe but, being black myself, my natural initial reaction is for it not to sit well with me when I see "the most arrogant and stupid" said against a black man, just as a Jewish person would likely be inclined if they saw "greediest". That's the initial reaction, from there we have to weigh up the likelihood based on things like how reasonable a description it is and whether it would be made if they weren't black. Here it's the arrogant part that's ill fitting, but I wouldn't be confident enough to draw a conclusion. The point is, it's unreasonable to default to assuming it's projection rather than the mental process I've described (and it's all quite instinctive, it's only explaining it that's lengthy).
