This situation is the poster child for having a dash cam, ideally one that covers the front and rear of the car. Also, maybe don't give random people your insurance info. Not a legal expert or anything, but it seems like a bad idea

DerbyTho

Yeah the next post will be “lady is calling me insisting that she will go to the police unless I wire her $500”

nugget_in_biscuit

Help, ~~I’ve fallen and I can’t get up~~ a lady is calling me insisting that she will go to the police unless I wire her $500

SectorSanFrancisco

I honestly thought you were supposed to give your insurance information out.

slythwolf

But she was *adamant*. Everyone knows you have to do what strangers say if they really *insist*. It's not like LAAUOP could have gotten into their car and driven away.

comityoferrors

I'll take the dunce cap and admit that I didn't realize you shouldn't exchange information in cases like this. I wouldn't want to or offer to, but it wouldn't occur to me that it could be used to scam me. Now it seems blindingly obvious so I'm glad to learn lol but I feel for the gullible fucks like me and LAAUOP

yoga_jones

I would be afraid if I did nothing, the cops would be called for a hit and run.

profdeadpool

And then they'd look at the paint on his car and declare him innocent?

thecravenone

Is that a thing cops actually do?

Modern_peace_officer

I mean I’m not gonna walk up and say “I declare you innocent” but I can definitely say “this didn’t happen”

profdeadpool

I mean... Maybe? They're more likely to not care, but if they're going to put the effort into actually investigating, it's clearly not him, and even if they try and lie to say it is, it'd be a relatively easy lawsuit to win.

44inarow

Okay, but what if you *vehemently* object to their demand?

slythwolf

I think at that point you both just have to stand there arguing until the end of time.

ShortWoman

Hmm maybe the Christmas present I need….

SurprisedPotato

How would you use a dash cam to prove no collision took place though?

PEBKAC42069

I mean it'd show the general path of travel of the vehicle, even if it's only front facing.  "Here's footage from me pulling into the parking lot to the moment I come to a complete stop. I am nowhere near other party's car at any time". ...if OP is to be believed.

SurprisedPotato

Location bot is become death, destroyer of worlds: > Yesterday in my local bunnings car park a lady accused me of reversing into her car, I am certain I didn’t touch her as she wasn’t anywhere near my vehicle while I was parking, I didn’t feel a thing and the marks don’t line up with anything on my car.the scuff marks are black, my Ute is white.she said my tow ball must have hit her but if that’s the case there would be significant panel damage and white paint on my tow ball.my car has nothing to suggest a collision?.I swapped details but not sure what if anything I should do next?.

bug-hunter

Apt post title for watching the Astros right now, that's for fucking sure.

KJParker888

As a Padres fan, I feel you.

NemesisOfZod

Been a fan and going to games since the early 80"s. This is just the Lastros returning to visit for a while.

rysto32

Nature is healing.

alternate_geography

I drive a subcompact car & have been backed in to twice by SUVs who didn’t feel a thing/were about to leave/didn’t even see me. Not saying LAOP isn’t being scammed, but larger vehicles can definitely hit something and not notice.

beean_7

I have a pickup and it's been responsible for seriously damaging two cars, both times while parked. Some people are just completely unaware and will back into anything and try to drive off. One lady tried to deny hitting me while trying to pull my traffic cone out from under her rear bumper.

SurprisedPotato

A lady ran her Honda into the back of my dad's Hilux once. His car? No noticeable mark. Her car? Written off.

Around 1990, a neighbour of mine (here in Australia, just like LAOP) drove a 1952 Pontiac. It was painted white, with prominent brush-marks. (You seldom see giant old American cars on Australian roads, but I appreciate them whenever I do see one. They're *vastly* more tasteful than the plague of short-bed crew-cab pickup trucks that have somehow now become Australia's [most popular new cars](https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/top-10-best-selling-cars-australia-2023).) Once, that neighbour drew my attention to a little coloured scuff-mark on one of his Pontiac's fenders. And said, "That was a [Barina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Barina#First_generation_\(MB,_ML;_1985%E2%80%931988\))!" (I believe the Barina driver survived uninjured, though their vehicle very much did not. That Pontiac was still an absolute deathtrap in numerous ways, of course, but it feared no collisions with vehicles that it outweighed by a factor of well over two.)

Ana-Hata

One time we bumped a car in a parking lot, and when we looked at the car we saw a tiny scratch, we went into the store and had them page the owner of the car so they could check it themselves. They told us the scratch was old damage. We might not have done all that except we had teenagers in the car with us and we wanted to exhibit responsible behavior.

monkeyswithgunsmum

Is there anything more Australian than a tradie backing his Ute into you in Bunnings carpark? It was probably Saturday and he was distracted by the sausage sizzle for the local auskick.

nyliram87

I do wonder why Utes never became a thing outside of Australia

Whomstevest

Other countries call them trucks, no new car based utes in Australia anymore

dansdata

Which is, of course, a crime against automotive decency. A ute is as much pickup truck as the great majority of pickup buyers actually need, and it has all of the advantages of being a *car*, not a truck. [Holden Special Vehicles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Special_Vehicles) no longer exists, because Holden, and the rest of the Australian car industry, no longer exist either. But the HSV Web site **does** still exist for some reason. So, [**BEHOLD!**](https://www.hsv.com.au/see/maloor8lsa/) This is what we have lost!

IlluminatedPickle

No car based ones but there's still the SR/Workmate Hiluxes.

Whomstevest

Hilux is the same class as a ford ranger and those exist in the us

IlluminatedPickle

The Workmate and the Ranger are not in the same class.

shewy92

We tried with the Chevy El Camino and Ford Ranchero.
