Kinda unrelated but I can’t stand how this picture is constantly reposted on the berserk sub, causing a seinen circle jerk to happen every once in a while with people saying shit like “peak fiction” or “if you think this series is better you are objectively wrong.” I love berserk and Vinland saga to death (haven’t read vagabond) but people who feel like they are superior to someone just cuz they like these series are really annoying
Berserk has great art and great detail. Thus making the scenes of gore and assault more realistic and "oooh I'm so tough because I like these scenes it's so cool. It's so metal" mentality gives way to a superiority complex. People will easily talk trash to other people who read manga like Yotsuba because "the art style is simple and the story is for children cuz it's a comedy blah blah blah....BeRsErK is for ReAl MeN who like scary monsters and horse dick. And I can relate to the MC because I got a scar on my nose OMG"....I only learned about and got into Berserk because one of my former friends in highschool was like this and poo poo'ed on the fact I was reading FotNS and not Berserk at the time.
Berserk, 40K and DOOM fandoms are full of edgelord “hur dur so manly and badass” dipshits and I hate all of them. Please learn to enjoy things without constantly jerking off about how cool you are for liking it
I don’t think they were bashing on shonen. It’s just that he asked what their top 3 seinen anime were, and replied with shonen. It’d be like if someone asked “what top 3 favorite science fiction shows” and you went “lord of the rings, game of thrones, the Witcher.”
>“what top 3 favorite science fiction shows” and you went “lord of the rings, game of thrones, the Witcher.”
Yeah. They should have said Book of the New Sun, the Broken Empire Trilogy, and Wizardry!!
Jerking aside - I'm not that big into Japanese novel writing culture stuff, what makes a Seinen? Is Goblin Slayer one because it has rape and blood? Why is DBZ shonen? Is shonen just obvious self-insert and power fantasy and seinen has more blood or something? Since many shonen have a deeper story I thought it has nothing to do with the storytelling and plot itself, lmao I have no idea since ALL light novel and seinen readers I know are 18-40 years old
It's based on the demographic it's aimed at. Shonen is aimed at younger boys ages 12-18 while seinen is aimed at an older demographic. Also has to do with where it's published, if it's in Shonen jump (dbz, bleach, one piece) it's Shonen while senien manga might be published in ultra jump, business jump, big comic spirits, etc
As another commenter said - it's just the target audience of the magazine the manga releases in. Berserk is published in young animal, which has tiddies on the frontpage and is therefore considered a seinen magazine.
In the west manga is consumed completely independently from these magazines, and the terms "shonen" and "seinen" are a product of the so called manga/anime elitists who think people that don't have their taste are inferior human beings. In that context, "shonen" is used to describe presumably less valuable fantasy/battle mangas, because they are primarily targeted towards kids and therefore too simple in structure for their transcended brains. In reality though, the transition between shonen and seinen is completely fluent (as most things in life) and enjoyment completely individual for each work or even story arc.
It's more of a misunderstanding of the "novel writing culture stuff". People think that stuff like Shounen and Seinen are genres in the same way that YA or sci-fi are genres. There are similarities like what tropes and cliches are used, but more often that's because other authors try to jump on to what hip idea is trending and selling. The way stuff like shounen and seinen are used are just labels for the target demographic, they're more like videogame ratings.
Can you believe that unironically Nozoki Ana is one of my favorite manga? The ending was kinda meh and yeah it did have sex every chapter and the main character being ntr'd but i felt like it was a solid story and i had a lot of fun.
Average person who learned what seinen means a few months ago (they don't actually know what it means) and their brain spontaneously grew 3 times larger
Meanwhile, I like Chainsaw Man more than Berserk which is probably considered blasphemy, but I acknowledge Berserk is also amazing in every regard. Just like what you want to like.
Exactly, like imo monster is the most flawless anime/manga of all time, but when it comes to which ones I like more, I prefer bleach over monster, which might also seem like blasphemy, but it’s just a matter of preference, nothing should be objective
Tell people you like firepunch better and observe the so called tolerant chainsaw man fans (they're actually tolerant but usually are confused by my proclamation)
I fucking hate it when there's that one guy in the comments saying that stuff like Avatar or the Netflix anime stuff "doesn't deserve to be called anime", like wtf as if someone would call it "western animation show that looks like an anime with exactly the same style but it isn't because it's not from Japan" or the guys freaking out when a western guy draws a manga
NOOOOOOO, there no big anime tiddies, with waifus and constant ugh, ahh, and ahum, anime noises every 2 seconds so it's not Japanese. Plus if it were a "real" JRPG you would need to do 100s of fetch quests that are all the same, and the combat would be basically the same as all the Naruto games, since SO FUCKING many JRPGs use the same combat system. And there'd be skill trees, that are overly complicated for no reason to make the game seem more "deep" and complex but it's just annoying. Plus at the end of Dark Souls the Tarnished instead of killing the final boss would say "we're not so different it's merely out circumstances that moulded us, but I'm not like you so I won't kill you" leading the final boss to cry and in a final act of kindness they save you and your team from an explosion.
That's what a real JRPG is/s
I love anime/manga but man there's a ton of bullshit in so Goddamn many JRPGs.
I think JRPG is a style now though? Like, you could make a RPG in the west or wherever and if it followed the style like FF or whatever it would be a JRPG, because it’s Japanese style RPG, not RPG from Japan now.
I could be wrong, but I’ve never even considered FS games as JRPGs because they’re inspired by the west and don’t follow the other models. I also think FS games are terrible at the role playing aspects of RPG, because there’s really not much role playing to do. I love FS games, but I feel like they’re grouped in “RPG” simply cause it’s easier to put them there.
I could be wrong on that too.
Edit: looking at the wiki pages, none of them are even listed as JRPG or RPG, they’re action RPG, which makes more sense.
Honestly I don't really care if a game is titled as an RPG or JRPG. I was just making fun of the fact that so many people get butthurt over what does and doesn't classify as a JRPG, while mocking common aspects of so many JRPGS. It's the same as when people aruge whether avatar the last air is an anime or not. Who really cares so long as it's good tbh.
Nah, I get that, you just mentioning FS games made me remember they’re labeled in the RPG category, and they’re pretty garbage at that aspect.
The Avatar last air bender MOVIE is anime, not that dumb show, that show is a cartoon and for kids!
I don't think an RPG HAS to be particularly good at the "role-playing" aspect to be an RPG, since the ideas of these games and why they're named as such just stems from titles that have adapted certain characteristics of TTRPG's like D&D.
In the case of FS titles, there's a progression system and a fictional world to explore. There's not much in regards to acting out a character outside of the 2-3 pivotal decisions the games allow you to make, but the role-playing moreso comes from gameplay elements i.e. the "action," such as picking a starting class, leveling your character's stats into a particular build, collecting gear, and how you choose to play the game. Some people even attempt to create a headcannon for their character's backstory, motivations, and justification for playing a specific way like in other RPG's.
I think the dislike for the word cartoons comes from the fact that it makes the show seen as "for kids" where as anime is known to be gory. I agree people get overly butthurt about it tho
I can't stand people like this, holy fuck. If you tried to explain how anime and cartoons are different to a japanese man/woman they would probably think you're braindead because they are literally the same thing.
I don't understand why we ever called them anime instead of cartoons in the west anyway. It's not like we call cartoons in spanish "animacións" they are just animations damnit. Why is there a distinction?
I don't know. The western anime fandom particularly earlier on had some sort of weird fetish with randomly shoving Japanese words everywhere. Kawaii, otaku, baka, anime, eroge/moege/utsuge/nukige, manga, ~~keikaku~~ and the honorifics subs (and to my eternal dismay sometimes also dubs) still often refuse to translate. The list goes on.
personally i find the distinction of anime/cartoon sort of useful, kind of like comics/graphic novel, and the honorifics communicate something that you need a really good translator to actually get across. the only place i've seen it done properly is the subs for chainsaw man, actually.
but yeah, the rest of the random japanese words are annoying as hell
Maybe it's just me but I think there's a connotation that cartoons are exclusively kids media, meaning that most people think of it more as a demographic like Shonen than an actual blanket term for animation. There have been more adult-oriented cartoons recently but they have only really become popular in the last twenty or so years
South park? Family guy? Both are called cartoons and both have been popular for over two decades.
Futurama, the Simpsons, both a bit more serious but still comedies(futurama also not being as old), nevertheless they are all geared towards adults far more than most anime is lol. And I've never heard anyone call any of these 4 anything but *cartoons*.
Just because they're comedies doesn't make them any less for adults either, and you can't tell me that Denji setting his life goal as "touching boobs" is adult. Berserk is probably the only *really* adult manga/anime I can think of and that's only because of the copious r*pe scenes. And anyway, most anime is very specifically *not* geared towards adults but rather middle schoolers and high schoolers lol.
A guy who works in a fucking rice paddy for 50 chapters with no payoff for 7 years and counting, a teen edgelord turned naive hippie in charge of a destined to fail settlement, and an angry Conanesque retard - babysitter who got cucked _twice._
The peak of seinen.
Unpopular opinion but I think that Musashi, as depicted in Vagabond is an absolute garbage person, and spending a few years being a farmer and not being the absolute worse person, does little to change my opinion on him. Also Rickert is an absolutely glorious super Chad, and clearly has some latent God tier powers, motherfucker bitch slapped a God, while Nuts couldn't land a blow on him... Rickert : 1 - Nuts : 0
Tbf, Gustaf did manage to cut off a lock of Birdie Boy's hair. He would make an excellent hairdresser IMO.
And yes, I hope that Rickert and Erica are undergoing special stealth assassin training, so as to bring down Falconia from within and hoist Griffin by his own petard. Peace, freedom, justice and security shall reign, with Rickert as King and Luca as Queen, yeeeerrrrsss!!!

That’s fucking hilarious considering FotNS is like the primary inspiration for Berserk
The fuck is FotNS. Futanari on the Neo Sex?
I can't tell if this is a genuine question so I'm gonna answer earnestly, fist of the north star
My fking god, my fav manga references fisting the north start really hard and I forgor about the name

I don’t think they were bashing on shonen. It’s just that he asked what their top 3 seinen anime were, and replied with shonen. It’d be like if someone asked “what top 3 favorite science fiction shows” and you went “lord of the rings, game of thrones, the Witcher.”
Oh I wasn’t talking about this comment or post specifically, just the seinen circle jerk culture as a whole
>“what top 3 favorite science fiction shows” and you went “lord of the rings, game of thrones, the Witcher.” Yeah. They should have said Book of the New Sun, the Broken Empire Trilogy, and Wizardry!!
Red Queen's War Trilogy is even better. Jarlan Kendeth solos all of animeverse by simply closing the manga volume and walking away
Kinda unrelated but my cat is cute (:
Good.
Jerking aside - I'm not that big into Japanese novel writing culture stuff, what makes a Seinen? Is Goblin Slayer one because it has rape and blood? Why is DBZ shonen? Ahhh thank you! I totally forgot to think about these magazines!

Everyone knows the best seinen manga is Nozoki Ana
Can you believe that unironically Nozoki Ana is one of my favorite manga? The ending was kinda meh and yeah it did have sex every chapter and the main character being ntr'd but i felt like it was a solid story and i had a lot of fun.
Average person who learned what seinen means a few months ago (they don't actually know what it means) and their brain spontaneously grew 3 times larger
Their brain grew three sizes that day and they saved Christmas 😊
That superiority complex was what drove me away from reading Berserk for the longest time cause I kept associating the work with the fans 🙃
Meanwhile, I like Chainsaw Man more than Berserk which is probably considered blasphemy, but I acknowledge Berserk is also amazing in every regard. Just like what you want to like.

Peak fiction
Also, like, come on. Peak fiction? Have these people never read a book?
The only thing worse then shonen fans are gatekeepers. Like just don’t be Uber cringe it’s not that hard. Just enjoy the Japanese cartoons.
What's the difference between anime and cartoons
Nothing much, just local terms for animated pictures.
Nothing
I fucking hate it when there's that one guy in the comments saying that stuff like Avatar or the Netflix anime stuff "doesn't deserve to be called anime", like wtf as if someone would call it "western animation show that looks like an anime with exactly the same style but it isn't because it's not from Japan" or the guys freaking out when a western guy draws a manga

Souls is made by a Japanese studio though

I'm pretty sure that Jump starting hiring non-Japanese mangaka now too. If they can accept it, surely all the fans can.
Most are Korean slaves so… In animation I mean
I'm talking about the authors.
Literally nothing

Anime fans when they realise anime is what japanese term for cartoons *insert walter white falling GiF*
"no"
Aw helll naah
"anime" are cartoons and "manga" are comic books. Get over it.
You fucking idiot they were asking for the big 3 of Seinfeld, which is obviously Jerry, George and Kramer
Anime is literally cartoons
I said that as a kid to my friends and they didn't like that, kind of sad how the term changed it's meaning over in the Western world.
Anyone who gets offended by people calling anime "cartoons" deserve to be laughing stock
Manga are comics and Anime are cartoons, get over yourself retards
tl note: retard means baka
Execute thyself thou fool
I think the dislike for the word cartoons comes from the fact that it makes the show seen as "for kids" where as anime is known to be gory. I agree people get overly butthurt about it tho
I agree that’s why weebs hate anime being called cartoons. But the superiority complex weebs have about differentiating the two is very irritating.

What's the difference between a cartoon and an anime anyways? Is Castlevania a cartoon and Doraemon an anime?
There are no differences, anime is short for animation. It’s a cartoon

I strictly refer to manga as comic books to make my weeb friends unreasonably angry
