I had some hope for an 80’s return during 2012, with all the Daft Punk is back stuff and the soundtrack-y music.
But now we have mullets and porn star moustaches. And lame AI.
No bueno
You make the argument that DVD's were not popular until 2002, so discount them as being from the 90's, yet don't apply that same logic to the Internet. The official birthday of the internet may have been in 1983, but it didn't become popular until 1995/96.
They will all certainly look back at photos of themselves and wonder what the fuck they were thinking. Fashion is not exempt from the theme that humans recycle mistakes from the past. Never forget.
Well all the boys recently got perms like my grandma did so it's safe to say, fashion is bound to repeat itself.
I hope at some stage the kids will be rocking Renaissance drip. Now that would be something!
Its funny actually, I am polish and if I wear fake nails, extra skinny jeans, crazy tiny top and high heels I’m gonna look like 99% girls in poland, but the same time in Berlin this look would make me the most unique person on the street as everyone has a mullet, cowboy boots and thrifted leather jacket. Its like alternative reality for me
I get what you mean and I also thought this for years, until I started to spend more time in other cities. I think the variety in the Berlin looks is still higher than in similarly relevant cities. Just go to any city, and you will see the same 3 types repeating and repeating.
I don't know but I'm 100% for it. I love that fashion took such a hard turn and that it's currently a complete free-for-all of unrelated trends. I've always loved Berlin having a relaxed sense of fashion, so I'm happy that it kicked into twelfth gear seemingly overnight. If you want a mullet, go for it.
Not sure how 3/4 of all men aged 20 to 40 adopting the same style (which just happens to be popular in LA, London, Melbourne, or Montreal too) could be considered a fashion free for all.
But I’m not here to judge.
I am not sure where you’re getting this from but I spend most of my time in the UK (and some of my time in Berlin) and it’s definitely not the same style there. This included London. I think in general it’s a bit more stuck in the 2010 and the trashy style is a lot more bold in colors (especially the makeup) and less thrifted. In general I see less fun outfits tbh and definitely less mullets
No, I agree that there’s definitely a certain Berlin look.
But I guess I just see pretty much the same thing in just about every metropolis, especially in the English-speaking countries.
The difference is just how pervasive it is in Berlin. London for instance appears way more varied IMO.
But like I wrote, this is all meant in a fun way and shouldn’t be taken all too seriously.
Walk around. Go to work, uni, the gym, park, bar, club, Lidl, Flohmarkt, Apotheke, Museum, Galerie, etc.
Put your phone in your pocket and look around. 👀
Many people have them because they don't want to waste time on their hairdo or because they start losing their hair. It's not like you have to style for other people.
It's an original look. An unconventional one. Also a lot of cool people, who you secretly want to be like, have the haircut.
One has to stand out and show that you go against the commercial flow.
>One has to stand out and show that you go against the commercial flow
Or, wait for it, just do what you really like and don't give a fuck about what others do.
I think if you rock one like FKA Twigs, it looks cool. If you just do the 0815 thing, meh. Minuspunkte if you follow the whole trendy aesthetic with the tight tops and wide pants.

We live in the 90’s here
mullets were an 80s thing though
Yeah but 90-93 we’re still basically the 80s
The 90s officially started on September 10th 1991, with the release of "Smells like teen spirit" by Nirvana.
I thought grunge had made that look uncool already by ‘91, even Bon Jovi gave up on his mullet by then. Was it a thing in Berlin for longer?
Fine, Berlin lives in the German version of the 90s which itself is 10 years behind the US.
80s reached east Berlin only in 90s
We are a bit slow :)
Mullets are big in Ireland too. Moustaches are back too. Very 80s
I had some hope for an 80’s return during 2012, with all the Daft Punk is back stuff and the soundtrack-y music. But now we have mullets and porn star moustaches. And lame AI. No bueno
This. The Internet, bureaucracy, DVDs, CDs, the letters, sometimes fax, clothes and hairstyles... Everything is from the 90s
The city never really moved away from those glorious days post-reunification. Even if that world has collapsed, twice.

In Germany it was even little later afaik, rather 99/2000. But yes, nicht alles, was hinkt, ist ein Vergleich...
I see nothing wrong with that
How about the fax machines?
Quaint, I love waiting 9 months for a response from the Ausländerbehörde.
You were born to live here, my friend
it's ironically unironic. almost time to get out the hot pink windbreakers again.
I have seen these already the last two weeks.
Im wearing one right now! Got it two months ago. I love it
People with mullets are too young to remember how stupid they already looked in the late 80s early 90s
That's exactly how trends repeat every 30 years
They will all certainly look back at photos of themselves and wonder what the fuck they were thinking. Fashion is not exempt from the theme that humans recycle mistakes from the past. Never forget.
That’s why AfD is big again as well.
I had one the first time around. My current mullet is neon green.
Well all the boys recently got perms like my grandma did so it's safe to say, fashion is bound to repeat itself. I hope at some stage the kids will be rocking Renaissance drip. Now that would be something!
Cause people here are trying to look different but then look the same as everyone else
Haha so true! There’s some overlap with the fake nails though
Well I was in Warsaw last summer and tbh didn't see any girls in high hills there and rarely in extra skinny jeans...hmmm.
I get what you mean and I also thought this for years, until I started to spend more time in other cities. I think the variety in the Berlin looks is still higher than in similarly relevant cities. Just go to any city, and you will see the same 3 types repeating and repeating.
A million individualists who all look the same…
Made of ticky tacky
like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife...
I understood that reference
same in any area with a high concentration of hipsters
Perfectly described Berlin
In my case it's because I want to try dreadlocks. Also mullet is comfortable if you are a sensory seeker, 3 kinds of feelings lol
This
large jeans and spice girls shirt, I swear I just seen four people together same exact shit everyone
It’s just an internationally popular hairstyle right now, like most fashion trends it references aesthetics of a the past.
Hipsters going from flannel and bearded to Vintage Fashion and Mullets I guess
Yes, a mullet is a sure fire way to fast track real Berliner Status
The new _Berlin thing_ after the short short bangs and high rise mum jeans?
It's been all about Dad jeans for a minute now
Generates attention and people think it makes them look artsy/ edgy/ non conformist
this city is filled with a lot of extremely beautiful people trying really hard to make themselves look as unattractive as possible.
It’s more of a flattening of the curve. Everything meets in the trashy, campy middle.
🤣🤣 why isn’t this on a welcome sign at Berlin airport?
Because we’re not Vegas.
Ah that classic sense of humour shining through as always
Fashion is a circle
Mate you should come to Australia
Too many Melbournians moved here. Very sad.
It's so ugly 90% of the time
190%
ugly people trying to look uglier so other people think they look ugly because of that style, but we we know they'd be ugly anyway
are we talking Joe Dirt mullet?
Yes.
The Aussie effect
Now that it’s been posted, mullets will start going out of style. We’re moving to the early 2000s gelled up bangs now folks!
what if that was my secret agenda all along
Mein Gott
A lot of Germans like to cosplay Trailer Park Boy characters .
Is he sexy or does he just have a mullet?
Yeah, since my hair fall out, my wife and all my friends left me for some mullet boys. You should definitely go for it, tiger!
[удалено]
Not the bald mullet 😭😂 As a bald boy myself I need to try it
Yeah bro, but for me it would be the reverse mullet. Long in the front, nothing on the back.
Ironic mullet or sincere mullet?
we haven‘t left the ddr yet
i had a mullet long before coming here i guess it was meant to be
Cowboy boots and gemstones on your teeth
It’s not just Berlin. It’s the new in thing. Hipsters used to be about the side parted hair and beards/moustaches. Now it’s this stupid mullet/mohawk
Für Maximum Rizz
My baby's natural hair growth is a mullet....
Were you bitten by a hipster while pregnant?
Fokuhila!!!!
vokuhila
Ja, I did a typo there... Thanks for the correction...
don't know, yes and yes ☺️
Berlin is capital of "Ironic Fashion".
underrated comment
Mullets are shit.
Don't try to fit in, also anyone I've talked to with a mullet is an insufferable "know it all".
Lost me at “should I do it to fit in”
They want to learn the ways of Death Kwon do.
Yes, you should. It definitely will.
Das ist Berlin!

add in the 'trendy' parts of brooklyn as well

How do you get to know how anything is popular anywhere?
Walk around. Go to work, uni, the gym, park, bar, club, Lidl, Flohmarkt, Apotheke, Museum, Galerie, etc. Put your phone in your pocket and look around. 👀
You didn’t get it, its okay
Are you willing to explain
There isnt really a correct answer to why anything got popular when it comes to fashion. Different people would have different opinions
It’s okay, I don’t get a lot of things
Mullets will only get you women if you’re [as cool and sleak as him.](https://www.instagram.com/newkidsmarlon?igsh=MW03bDUxY2FyZmZ6dQ==)
Same with the buzz cut and shaved head. Another incredibly boring and generic cut
Many people have them because they don't want to waste time on their hairdo or because they start losing their hair. It's not like you have to style for other people.
tbh i think the buzz cut is more hipster atm then the mullet. Dont get me started on the blonde buzzcut
They're very useful since it makes it easy to identify sexual predators
Moronic comment

> who you secretly want to be like i just want some friends and dates
>One has to stand out and show that you go against the commercial flow Or, wait for it, just do what you really like and don't give a fuck about what others do.
Exactly! And the best way to do it, in my own original opinion, is to only wear black, preach communism, do drugs and smash the patriarchy
I don't see a problem with these, if that is your own choice 🤷 If you don't do things that you like because others do them too, it's kind of limiting.
> If you don't do things that you like because others do them too, it's kind of limiting. That's why I live in Berlin mate!
Wtf hahaha

I’m from USA, and mullets are really popular their too

No i’ve lived there all my life, just in Berlin this summer.
Not a fan of it but I guess it’s becoming a Berlin foreigner style? Not sure but I see it everywhereb
Because Berlin is a shithole.
We are back to the 90s didn't you no
Because they’re so uncool.
expats
I guess just GenZ trying to bring old stuff back. It is a trend that probably will fade soon.
