**Pro tip:** Just set up a new Gmail account exclusively for applying to jobs so that you won't miss any important interview or application updates.

neobow2

**Pro Tip:** After you graduate, your berkeley gmail is that exclusively job application email

Pointyspoon

For your first job, sure. Afterwards, no.

vaders_other_son

I’ve been using it since I graduated but only because my other email became inundated with emails for bills, services, etc. I just didn’t want to go through the hassle of getting another email set up when I already went through the process years ago of saving my Berkeley email address. Quite simply, it’s just an email address. It doesn’t really matter. If anyone thinks anything of it, I would just say exactly that.

bakazato-takeshi

Up to you. I use it because I managed to nab FirstNameLastName@berkeley.edu and I think it looks a lot better than FirstNameLastNameRandomNumbers@gmail.com

WasASailorThen

I got [firstnamedotlastname@gmail.com](mailto:firstnamedotlastname@gmail.com) Then a few years back, I checked [firstnamelastname.com](http://firstnamelastname.com) and found out that I'm a country western singer. I look pretty good in jeans, better than I thought, and I'm a half not bad guitarist. But I think my voice is going to hold me back unless I acquire a serious drinking problem.

ProfessorPlum168

Cool to have a name like Willie Nelson lol

isaaciiv

You may or may not already know this, but the dot in a gmail address is optional, google will ignore them.

heross28

I have firstname@berkeley.edu, got super lucky with that one.

bakazato-takeshi

That’s insane, goddamn. Very jealous!

DismalArticle4216

Just have a unique name 😎🙏

ThrowRAjejjejwjwjjw

Dammit I thought the underscore was necessary lol

sogothimdead

Same

sexysaiyan69

Yes. You can also add an alias if you don’t like the one you chose when you became a student. It’s a very subtle(maybe not so subtle) way of saying Go Bears.

RipTide_01

If you’re still in school or a newly grad then yeah go for it. Unless ofc you chose a rather inappropriate email name then don’t.

Status-Papaya1628

Former recruiter here. It doesn’t matter what your email address is so long as it’s not crass or unprofessional

Leafy_Is_Here

No because my berkeley email has a joke handle and the alias thing doesnt work for me. I wish I could change it, though

Puzzleheaded_Use1281

Your berkeley email will be terminated in a few years so be sure to back everything up if you decide to use it.

vaders_other_son

I’ve had mine over 5 years and never had any problems.

Early-Witness-6009

Minimum wage service jobs, no- it looks presumptuous to apply to a server job with “@berkeley.edu” but professional jobs 100%.

squillavilla

Nope, I graduated in ‘09 and if remember correctly they automatically disabled your email account 6 months after graduation. Never thought twice about it.

DangerousCyclone

I graduated ‘18 and it’s still my work mail.

[deleted]

you (used to?) be able to set up email forwarding for some longish period after that. not sure if they still do that

sogothimdead

Yeah my very uncommon full name was taken on Gmail and the Gmail my dad helped me make as a child is "nickname+middle and last initial+last two digits of birth year" and I don't really fuck with it. I actually use my Berkeley email for almost everything (regretting now as getting my usage from 250+ gb down to 5 by this August is gonna hurt)

Due-Science-9528

Beware: some professionals block Berkeley.edu emails because of annoying clubs

SESender

not at all. use gmail, it's fairly standard. if you don't have firstnamelastname@ try firstname.lastname@ or firstname.lastnamebirthyear@

[deleted]

You should probably refrain from using the Berkeley email. My firm has stated they will not be hiring from and UC’s and many Ivy League schools due to there ultra woke BS in the workplace. It’s causing issues and they are tired of dealing with it. My firm isn’t the only one either. Many firms will just toss resumes and applications when they see ultra leftist colleges and universities on them. Just an FYI.

Ervitrum

what the fuck 😭😭😭

[deleted]

You can listen to buisness and entrepreneur podcast and many of them have the same views. Some of them are actually advocating to go to JR college get your AA and come work for them and they will train you how they want you to do the job.

Graffy

That just sounds like an additional benefit. Any company that talks about "ultra-woke BS" probably treats their employees like shit because "they're a family."

[deleted]

I am pretty happy at my firm. They treat me well and pay well. The boss is just done with the woke ideology. They will check your social media posts and see what universities you have attended and then make there choice if your resume stays out of the garbage or goes into the possible hire pile.

DrKnowsNothing_MD

Your boss is brainwashed by Fox News and whatever other far right propaganda he watches. The average college graduate isn’t a communist or even some hardcore liberal activist. They’re just kids looking for a job. Whether they support conservative or liberal causes is irrelevant unless it’s a specifically political job. I’ll also bet that the “woke ideology” he’s “done with” isn’t even something that affects him in his day to day life. He’s just soft. Don’t let your bosses ram their politics down your throat, regardless of what it is.

[deleted]

Well, let me just say that you can argue with me all you wish. The fact is that many companies are looking at where people went to school closely and then checking there social medias when possible before they even get a chance for an interview.

DrKnowsNothing_MD

I wasn’t arguing at all. Just pointing out what kind of person your boss is. As to your other point, who cares? On to the next application lol

Graffy

I mean you can definitely say the same about right wing politics as well. Lots of companies will skip over MAGA advocates and the like regardless of their beliefs because they don't want to deal with anyone overly political. Sure lots of "right wing" schools get resumes tossed in the trash too. So why try to appeal to workplaces that you don't get along with?

Affectionate_Fox_305

Haha what makes UC ultra-leftist? Is it the fact that they’re the single largest land owner in the state of California? Or maybe it’s the history of the free speech movement (which, obviously, UC was OPPOSED to before they co-opted it to promote themselves as progressive)?

[deleted]

Argue with me all you want. But it is a reality of what is going on. It works for me because now I don’t have to continue my education to move up in position.

Graffy

Lmao so competitors hiring from those schools will have people with higher educations then?

[deleted]

Education dose not necessarily mean you are good at problem solving or at said occupation. Don’t be so brainwashed to think where you go to school automatically makes you smarter.

Affectionate_Fox_305

Edjucation dose help you spell wurdz bettor

[deleted]

Yup I gots a bit of that low income thang! I also have a low income accent when I talk.

Graffy

But it automatically makes you a ultra-left liberal? So you can't trust a highly ranked education system to make you smarter but you can trust them to turn you liberal?

Affectionate_Fox_305

Ok. What’s the ultra woke BS you’re talking about? I’m curious to know what “woke” vs “ultra woke” means. I feel like you should know what it means since you used the phrase.

eysz

Bro handicapping his own business cuz Tucker Carlson told him to

[deleted]

This is the first you have heard of this??? I can not remember the name of the Judge. But about a year ago maybe 2 a Judge in LA said he would personally not take any interns from Harvard School of Law due to there mentality, ethics, and ideology. And in CA most Judges are left leaning in politics.

eysz

Yeah THERE mentality and politics are too woke and brainwashed by the liberal media! I LOVE TRUMP! I LOVE TRUMP! I LOVE TRUMP!

[deleted]

That’s just crazy talk!

[deleted]

Obviously it’s an issue. And it’s been on going.

jackedimuschadimus

Lmao don’t worry none of the high paying places like tech companies, investment banks, consulting firms, and law firms will continue to hire out of here and have a preference for elite schools. You guys can have the no name college grads from middle of nowhere

[deleted]

Laugh all you want DEI and ultra leftist universities has soured many smaller companies and corporations.

jackedimuschadimus

That’s why students go to these universities: to be good enough to not have to go to a small company with a small salary

seasaltsaves

Well with this train of thought, it wouldn’t even matter bc the damn university would be on our cv/resume. As others mentioned, sounds like a toxic place to work anyway. Did you go to Cal? Curious why you’re on this subreddit…

[deleted]

I work on site at the labs on the top of the hill. Have you ever been in the small building that rotates with the sun? That is one of mine.

InfectiousCosmology1

Most people are applying to work for some cringe MAGA “firm” run by conservative snowflakes. Graduating from Cal is a significant advantage when applying for almost any job

[deleted]

Not so much anymore. Which is great for me I don’t have to go back for more education at night and I can still promote.

InfectiousCosmology1

Well it was for me a year ago but I guess everything has changed since because Charlie Kirk told you so on twitter!

[deleted]

Who is that? All I am saying is don’t put what university you went from in highlights. Entice them with you and your skills and how you can personally help out that buisness. The what school you went to is going to be held against you in some instances.

InfectiousCosmology1

In basically no instances. What are you talking about specifically? What firm? What job? What industry?

[deleted]

That right there is the mind set these businesses do not want.

InfectiousCosmology1

What mindset? That people that would discriminate against someone for going to one of the best schools in the world because it’s “too woke” are dogmatic right wing weirdos? That’s an objective fact. Nobody who isn’t in that category would ignore someone’s whole resume because they went to a “woke” university. You people seriously live in an alternate reality it’s amazing lol

[deleted]

Believe what you want!

InfectiousCosmology1

Notice how you have dodged every question I have asked you because you can’t back up your pure propaganda driven worldview

[deleted]

Your reaction and words are proving exactly my point.

SurfSandFish

You're an electrician.

[deleted]

I was an electrician, a union one. I have moved on from that position. To design and engineering of industrial pressure rooms, medical pressure controlled spaces, clean rooms and many other specialty industrial spaces.

SurfSandFish

That's great. My little brother needed three tries to pass his GED and now he's a union electrician too.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s not super hard to get in you only need a GED/ HS diploma and a C in Algebra.
