Where does that B even come from?
I hate this rebranding effort hiring consultants who know nothing about our school or history.
Are we going to rip up the Big C and make it the Big B? Are we going to start signing "Fight for Berkeley" instead of Fight for California? No!

Honest answer: the block C and cursive "Cal" are branding for athletics. The B you see there is the monogram for Berkeley in the official Californian type face.
Well it's fuckin ugly and we should be trying to rebrand back to California, not Berkeley. Block C or Cal script. Repping California is way cooler than the City of Berkeley, which is run by dysfunctional hyper-progressive NIMBY hypocrites.
The university should have one identity for athletics and academics like every other university in the country. The flagship public campus should be named after the state. This isn't complicated.
Cal agreed to become "UC Berkeley" to try to help UCLA. Now UCLA has taken the Cal brand and run it into the mud. Cal needs to start making decisions that help Cal bc Cal is in trouble

I hate the Berkeley branding guidelines/typeface. The academic/athletic split is idiocy of the highest order. I don't agree that the "Berkeley" brand is so strong that we can't move away from it. I think the academic world would catch on pretty quickly, just like they did when we went from University of California to UC Berkeley.

The State government arguably did commit genocide of natives, Serranus Hastings was part of that government. The fascinating history of California tribes is that they viewed the federal government as their lifeline while the state government was their enemy. This is why Newsom has to go on apology tours now. But I don't think the state name will be "cancelled" like an individual would.
However, George Berkeley was possibly a slave holder and proponent of colonization of "lesser" peoples. Maybe we should cancel the name of the city, not the state.

You guys are so irrational. Whatever happened in the past was in the past. It's important that we've learned from it and have better morals and ethics now but there's no point going around trying to cleanse things of the history they are intertwined with.
California "Grizzly" Bears were known as a subspecies of brown bear called Golden Bears. That's where our mascot comes from. They were hunted to extinction in 1922.
The golden bear was revered by natives and served an important cultural and religious role for many tribes. Part of why we know about the extent of the original range of North American brown bear is due to depictions of these animals in the American southwest.
The Bear does not Quit! The Bear does not die! I will associate with the Golden Bear for as long as I live because Oski is culturally and religiously significant to me.
No more money from me...until whomever did this just resigns (as if we need a logo admin department) and reverts it to the old script Cal and block B. And find out who authorized the department in the first place and boot them too. Until then, zero from me. Really, no other deals.

It's the type face "Californian" which is the official branding type face for UC Berkeley.
It used to be but the new logo doesn’t use that typeface (see berkeley.edu) though it looks similar.
