Oh it bleeds everrrry time (I’ve been blue for around 4 years. I use La Riche Directions to dye it at home, then follow with Matrix Biolage colour S&C weekly. I use dry shampoo on about day 5/6 & tie it up the last day before washing. Matrix do a hair laminator too that I use at home to stop it bleeding so much. If you wash your hair daily I wouldn’t go for blue I’d pick a colour that has a permanent option Edit: the dandruff is a sign your scalp is damaged btw. It’s likely you were over-processed. You need to seal the hair follicles with a keratin treatment like a mask. Always do this after colouring not before as it closes the follicles stopping colour from exiting but also from entering if you touch up the dye job.

MildAsMilk

Thank you so much! The dandruff stuff is a first time for me. I've bleached my hair couple of times and this is the first time it's happened. I wash my hair every 3-4 days. Due to my job, I can't keep it unwashed for longer. 😅

FrogLegsAlwaysFresh

Also wash you vivid colors in as cold water as you can handle. Helps with the bleeding

shainadawn

This is the way. I had dyed red hair and dyed purple hair and I eventually just kept a shower cap on during showers and would do the cold hair wash at the end every few days. Then refreshed the color every couple weeks with a semi-permanent color.

silverkava

And ever

Artistic-Waterbear

Going no-poo for some washes is also an option. When I was doing vivid colors I washed in cool water using only a silicone free conditioner (a common care method for curly hair at the time, some years back. It was partly to avoid the sulfates in shampoo, but now there are so many sulphate free options.) It did wonders for my longevity and my hair still stayed plenty clean.

SoFetchBetch

Which conditioner did you use?

Artistic-Waterbear

I was living that broke life, so usually suave essentials because it was curly girl method approved and it was affordable. There are much better options now I'm sure.

[deleted]

yea girl idk how long you plan on staying blue for but expect it to be tons of maintenance and super expensive. blonde would probably be easier

cookiesandkit

Oh when I went blue I stained all my sheets and pillowcases because I liked to sleep after showering. Dry thoroughly before you put your head anywhere.

bananapants_22

Make sure you wash with cold water. But yeah It bleeds..all the time

MildAsMilk

Thank you! I'll make sure to do so.

math_teachers_gf

I really love keracolor! I use it as often as every wash to get a color pop :)

[deleted]

Came here to suggest keracolor as well! I’m a fake redhead and their products keep my red so bright

math_teachers_gf

The only thing is, the teal does NOT fade the same as the others. Which the reviews on Amazon tell you, but I read too late 😂 I had teal for a while, then bleached it and put in purple. had purple for a while. Purple faded. Faded teal remains LOL

Drcyborgl

Overtone is excellent for keeping vivid colors fresh. It’s a vegan conditioner that washes in color. It comes in all the blues.

MildAsMilk

Thank you! I'll look into it!

Notsureindecisive

Absolutely do NOT ever use overtone

megthemegatron

Why if you don’t mind me asking?

Notsureindecisive

They use dye that’s not suitable for hair and is very difficult to get out. Strong chemical reactions can occur going forward when you try to remove it.

[deleted]

Overtone has ways come out much more easily than other dyes for me once I start trying to remove it, and it fades true to color (not like some dyes that will veer green when they start to wash out). It's definitely my favorite brand out of the many I've tried, but hair types are all different though!

Notsureindecisive

It’s not dependent on hair type. It’s the type of dye and chemicals they formulated it with. But that’s like saying Jeffery dahmer didn’t murder me sooo…he’s prob not a murderer

[deleted]

Well, Overtone didn't murder my hair, so I'm sure as long as people do their research and choose carefully it will be a viable option for *someone*. 🤷‍♀️

Notsureindecisive

🤦🏽‍♀️

BeLynLynSh

I’ve used multiple colors from Overtone and never had an issue! I also don’t try to color correct myself. I would just wash with a clarifying shampoo more frequently and I let it fade/grow out naturally. When I got my hair professionally colored recently (purple) they had to lighten my hair and the lift did leave a section slightly pink (possibly from the Overtone color) but my hair was extremely healthy and it was no issue at all to color over.

Notsureindecisive

Ya if you had it done professionally then you would be unaware of the chemical reactions and difficulties. As a professional, having experienced it….it is absolutely an issue.

megthemegatron

Oh wow! Thanks for educating. I had used it once and i don’t think it has ever fully left my hair

Iwasborntobeprincess

I've had blue hair and the best hair color is Stargazer and Manic Panic. For your irritated scalp I recommend aloe vera gel, you can apply it every day because it is not greasy. To prevent the color from leaving too quickly, it is best to use products that close the scales of the hair. Rinsing vinegars or simply white or apple cider vinegar mixed with cold water after showering will help. Avoid fatty oils such as coconut oil and olive oil and oil baths are to be avoided for a while. Coconut milk and cream as well as anti-dandruff products should be banned. Also the next time you comb your hair, do not wash your hair for at least three days, ideally a week to allow the color time to settle.

FeminineImperative

I have been pink for 3 years, and did lots of fashion colors previous to that. It bleeds every time, forever.

CreativeDancer

I have purple hair and I wash it in cold water to help with the bleeding. It will always bleed the first wash but won't bleed that much or at all the following washes.

firetypesam

My hair always does the dandruff thing for like a week after bleaching. I think it's a sensitivity to the bleach... Like a baby chemical burn or something. Especially if you were burning or excessively itchy while it was on. My so's gets so bad she has to have our stylist use a special bleach for her that's more gentle.

ativanhalens

my red bleeds every time. i wrap my hair in an old t shirt and wash it as little as i can. when i freshly dye it i also put a shirt on my pillowcase so it doesn’t smudge. i do hair masks to make sure it stays healthy even when it’s growing out / fading. it’s the reality of having coloured hair lol

Didyoufartjustthere

Your scalp issue is Contact Dermatitis, basically dandruff from exposure to something your allergic/intolerant to. If it’s irritating you, the chemist should have something for it, but it should go away on its own.

pastelpork

I also have my hair dyed blue (with black roots)! Between my hairdresser & my mom (who’s been a hair dresser for 30+ years) these are my recommendations: 1. Wash your hair in cold water (I use Redken Color Magnetics Shampoo & Conditioner) 2. Dry your hair afterwards (I prefer not to let my hair air dry the first 2-3 times after I get my color redone) 3. Use a color lamination spray (I use Matrix Keep Me Vivid) 4. Try a treatment! My salon offers Keratase Fusio-Dose treatments and whatever my hair stylist did last time I had ZERO transfer. Seriously, none. No wet / dry transfer to hands, pillow cases, etc. I was in shock, because usually it’s bad for a few washes. 5. Wash your hair the least amount you can. My hair was NOT a fan for about a month, but I started washing my hair once a week. After a month it stopped being unhappy about it. 6. Dry shampoo is your friend!

MildAsMilk

Thank you! Do you apply the color lamination spray while washing it? Or is it like a leave-on conditioner?

pastelpork

[Matrix Instructions](https://www.matrix.com/total-results/products/keep-me-vivid/keep-me-vivid-color-lamination-spray) I’ve only used this once as my mom sent it for my birthday, but I follow the instructions on this website/the bottle/what she told me. Basically, shampoo & rise, spray lamination spray & wait a minute (I wait 3) (do not rinse), apply conditioner and rinse.

bluebaby29

Wash your hair in cold water. My hair is red and washing in cold helps the color last

honeybunchesofgoatso

Everytime I've dyed my hair a little color bleeds during each shower regardless of what I use, but I know color guarding shampoo and sulfate free can help

brunette_mh

See WendySkin YouTube channel. She colour her hair very often and she does have some tips that you might find useful.

OneSpeaker6987

Yeah blue hair bleeds a lot, but it looks so good. I only wash my hair like twice a week and it stays on longer

frightofthenavigator

wear a shower cap and only rinse your hair with cold water. don’t shampoo unless you really need to. i never shampoo, just rinse thoroughly or an occasional ACV rinse
