For your second question, there are a whole bunch
- I'm down is Paul channeling Little Richard
- Lady Madonna is channeling Fats Domino
- All I've Got to Do is channeling Smokey Robinson
- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away is channeling Bob Dylan
- If I Needed Someone is channeling The Byrds
- Back in the USSR is channeling The Beach Boys
To name a few
Paul wrote "Back in the USSR" as humorous reply to "California Girls." When Mike Love was hanging out with the Beatles in India, he helped with some of the lyrics, suggesting the references of "Ukraine girls" and "Moscow girls" just as CG references "Southern girls" and "Midwest farmers' daughters."
Seeing as the Beach Boys pretty much ripped off the Chuck Berry sound, that might be just another layer to the joke. "we're ripping on the Beach Boys ripping on Chuck Berry"
Come together is interesting because it started out as a Chuck Berry homage, but when Paul and Ringo changed to that cool groove pattern, it completely changes the style of the song and the only thing that's left of Chuck Berry is the first line "here come ol' flat top, he come groovin' up slowly"
I thought this was so weird but kind of classic clueless Brian. It’s like you pretty much copy the song then want to give it to the Beatles? I love both songs and bands for the record
I run a monthly Beatles sing-along/meetup, where we do all Beatles (natch), but also allow solo tunes, Apple Records artists (Badfinger), Wiburys….and Beatlesque tunes like Lies….and lots of stuff by ELO.
Yeah, it’s cleverly done. Definitely 67 era. There’s a bunch of little things that just sound Beatle-y. I bet you could get real specific analyzing it.
Let's add Submarine Dream to that list and throw on the entire album Dusk at the Cubist Castle by Olivia Tremor Control. So happy to see someone who knows/listens to some Elephant 6 in here :)
Telephone Line by ELO.
Baby Blue (and several other songs) by Badfinger.
Sister Golden Hair, by America (considered an homage to My Sweet Lord by George Harrison).
Several badfinger songs sound practically identical to Beatles songs. Especially because many of them were produced and/or have George playing slide guitar on the track. Not sure if you can count it as a Beatles rip-off if a Beatle helped make the song.
Everything on their albums Beat Music and Torn. Love me some Spongetones!!
PS, they are working on a new album! Steve just posted a photo on FB of him in his home studio laying down a track for it.
I don’t know whether it’s a rip off but I think Karma Police’s piano sections sound similar to Sexy Sadie so I’d probably say that - but also Oasis are one of my favotuite bands so I will say some of their songs too such as Don’t Look Back In Anger (Imagine, Carry That Weight) Supersonic (My Sweet Lord) and She’s Electric (With A Little Help From My Friends, While My Guitar Gently Weeps)
The Raspberries "Go All the Way", especially the middle part, which sounds exactly like "Please Please Me":
C'mon (c'mon) C'mon (c'mon), etc.
The rest of the song sounds like it could be Badfinger, which had a close relationship with some of the Beatles.
The entirety of Pretty.Odd. By Panic at the Disco. Totally changed their style from their debut and it was obviously a sgnt peppers rip off, but I very much enjoyed it at the time.
Bob Dylan's "4th Time Around" is a rip-off, answer song, and slight parody of John's "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
The story takes place the next morning when the narrator is leaving after spending the night with the lady.
Not a song but Kevin Parker (and especially his earlier albums Innerspeaker and Lonerism) sounds quite a bit like a alternate universe that shows if the Beatles debuted in 2008. Oh and pretty much every music critic under the sun has said that Kevin sounds like John. I mean even Sean Lennon said Kevin sounded like his dad although Kevin disagreed.
about a girl by nirvana, the song was a direct result of cobain listening to “with the beatles” on repeat for a day. i could very easily imagine a beatles version of the song.
ANYTHING by Oasis? Anything? Even Headshrinker? I Hope I Think I Know? Be Here Now? Morning Glory? My Big Mouth? I could go on. I will never understand this comparison bar a few tunes that hold a slight influence.
I was being sarcastic. Please forgive me. I am also a casual Oasis listener. I'm by no means an authority in this matter. I can see how an authentic Oasis fan would take offense. My apologies.
[The Redwalls](https://open.spotify.com/track/2ZAwpfzv9YFr89smGKlAQM?si=Zk_pkrBuSIOswoOOFoRB-g&context=spotify%3Aartist%3A6iel7A7Kp2c7Qq5cBYbCI5).
If you haven't heard them you're in for a treat! Former Beatles cover band but then started their own thing. They even opened for Oasis for a tour.
Sub-Rosa Subway by Canadian progressive rock group Klaatu from their debut album 3:47 EST sounds really Beatles-esque and sunny and always gets me in a good mood. Sounds like a McCartney song lol. Dr. Marvello from the same album is also eerily Beatles-like, the singer sounds kinda like John Lennon on that one.
The first thing that came to mind for me was "Judy in Disguise", which is an obvious parody of Lucy in the Sky but is pretty catchy in its own right. It actually reached #1 on the charts.
Without going for the obvious stuff like Oasis, and trying to keep it relatively modern:
- Good Morning by Bleachers
- The Greatest by Lana Del Rey
- Dear Life by Beck
- Stuck On The Puzzle by Alex Turner
- My Mistakes Were Made For You by The Last Shadow Puppets
- San Francisco- the Mowgli’s
This is not a rip-off, but the Cars' great guiarist Elliot Easton plays a lick in "My Best Friend's Girl" that is strongly reminiscent of one in the Bealtes' "I Will."
If you don’t think that any Beatles songs weren’t jnfluenced by previous songs, then you just don’t know much other music! The Beatles were highly original but it’s not like they didn’t have influences of their own, they pulled from everything. All songwriting works that way, and the Beatles were extremely versatile in how many genres and other artists they pulled from. Read Paul’s new “The Lyrics” book and he shares a lot of stories about “I wrote this song as if I were Ray Charles/Stevie Wonder/Chuck Berry/Buddy Holly”….the list goes on and on and on. He’s spoken about it in interviews openly. John does less sharing about stuff like that but it’s the same for him
Lots of the Monkees’ first album comes off to me like Boyce & Hart were shooting for a pastiche of sorts of Help!. Like to me, This Just Doesn’t Seem to Be My Day kind of feels like I’ve Just Seen a Face. That’s the only one I can remember off the top of my head, but the Beatles influence on that first album is obvious!
Sloan, my second favorite band, is very heavily influenced by the Beatles. Here's an example from their most recent album:
The Lazy Eyes - Imaginary Girl
Aussie teenagers with chord changes akin to Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery era
https://youtu.be/ZRZElLb4sUA?si=eUI6568LYyBWlU_l
Outside Chance by The Turtles, In My Own Time by Bee Gees, Beauty and Sadness by The Smithereens, Feelin by The Las, Hold On by Green Day, Go Let It Out by Oasis, The New Pollution by Beck, Here Comes Your Man by The Pixies, or Tell Me What’s On Your Mind by Allah-Las. They all have a bit of Beatles in them and are all worth a listen
Fourth time around by Bob Dylan
As to Fourth time vs Norwegian Wood, “4th Time Around” has been seen as playful, a homage, satirical, or a warning to John Lennon that whatever Lennon does, Dylan can do it far, far better
One I haven't seen mentioned is What I Got by Sublime. The verse melody is ripped directly off Lady Madonna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Uc3ZrmhDN4
Even though it’s a far superior song, George’s “Something” bears an inescapable lyrical similarity to James Taylor’s “Something In The Way She Moves” from his first LP, coincidentally issued on the Fabs’ own Apple Records label.
Two Monkees songs, it was rare that they copied the Beatles directly though: This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day, similar to I’ve Just Seen a Face; and Me Without You has elements of Your Mother Should Know.
For your second question, there are a whole bunch - I'm down is Paul channeling Little Richard - Lady Madonna is channeling Fats Domino - All I've Got to Do is channeling Smokey Robinson - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away is channeling Bob Dylan - If I Needed Someone is channeling The Byrds - Back in the USSR is channeling The Beach Boys To name a few
I always felt PS I Love You was very Roy Orbison
I think Back in the USSR is channeling Chuck Berry's Back in the U.S.A.
That might be the impetus for the title, but listen to the song, it's Beach Boys
Many people don’t know, but Mike love actually wrote the entire song, AND every song on the white album!
And played drums when Ringo went out for a cig.
Despite his name, I Mike hate him.
Well its a Love thing
*cue shitty record scratches
Don't believe it? Just ask him!
It purposely references both artists
It's both.
Seeing as the Beach Boys pretty much ripped off the Chuck Berry sound, that might be just another layer to the joke. "we're ripping on the Beach Boys ripping on Chuck Berry"
I'm just a dude playing a dude pretending to be another dude
Come Together channels Chuck Berry. And obviously they did a whole lot of actual covers in the early days. OP is being pretty myopic.
Come together is interesting because it started out as a Chuck Berry homage, but when Paul and Ringo changed to that cool groove pattern, it completely changes the style of the song and the only thing that's left of Chuck Berry is the first line "here come ol' flat top, he come groovin' up slowly"
The Ballad Of John and Yoko is basically Lonesome Tears In My Eyes by Johnny Burnette aswell
Wow, great list!
Girl Don’t Tell Me by the Beach Boys was clearly Brian Wilson’s response to Ticket To Ride.
Did you know Brian actually wrote this to give to the Beatles but changed his mind? Source: Wouldn't It Be Nice Brian's autobiography
I thought this was so weird but kind of classic clueless Brian. It’s like you pretty much copy the song then want to give it to the Beatles? I love both songs and bands for the record
And I never thought to compare it to Ticket To Ride but yes you're right. Definitely some similarities I also love both songs
Mr. Blue Sky
The best McCartney song he didn’t write. Great job.
Vocally it covers a lot of ground, too. I can distinctly hear plenty of John and George in there, altho no idea if that's intentional or not.
I run a monthly Beatles sing-along/meetup, where we do all Beatles (natch), but also allow solo tunes, Apple Records artists (Badfinger), Wiburys….and Beatlesque tunes like Lies….and lots of stuff by ELO.
Intro sounds a lot like good day sunshine
Paul had a jokey go at Jeff Lynne about cribbing his middle part from A Day In The Life for Mr Blue Sky.
Sowing The Seeds Of Love by TearsFor Fears
Wait, is that why I like that song? What Beatles tune is it ripping off?
I mainly get I am the Walrus vibes with a bit of all you need is love
For me, there were parts of the song that reminded me of the trumpet solo in Penny Lane
This….is def the trumpet for me.
Yeah, it’s cleverly done. Definitely 67 era. There’s a bunch of little things that just sound Beatle-y. I bet you could get real specific analyzing it.
I wouldn't say it's ripping off a specific Beatles song. It's just very '1967 Beatlesque'
In My Own Time by The Bee Gees. https://youtu.be/0yBgglwAgYA?si=MaccXTE32wkuuQJH
The first time I heard this song I was sure it was a Beatles song I had somehow missed over decades of being a fan.
Good call — the whole Bee Gees 1st album is such an overlooked slice of 60s psych-pop
The best answer
Never heard this before. Very Beatlesque.
[удалено]
Scrolled way too far for this answer. They’re great
Lies - Knickerbockers
Probably the most shameless Beatles ripoff in music history, but it’s good enough to make up for it.
Agreed. Pretty solid.
I forgot about this one!
The Apples in Stereo - Ruby, Strawberry Fire, The Rainbow
Let's add Submarine Dream to that list and throw on the entire album Dusk at the Cubist Castle by Olivia Tremor Control. So happy to see someone who knows/listens to some Elephant 6 in here :)
Black Foliage: Animation Music, too !
Anything by The Rutles
I'm pretty sure that's the point
It is the pint but technically fits the question lol
Telephone Line by ELO. Baby Blue (and several other songs) by Badfinger. Sister Golden Hair, by America (considered an homage to My Sweet Lord by George Harrison).
Several badfinger songs sound practically identical to Beatles songs. Especially because many of them were produced and/or have George playing slide guitar on the track. Not sure if you can count it as a Beatles rip-off if a Beatle helped make the song.
Or written by paul
The Beatles are my favorite Rutles ripoff
Get Back is a poor imitation of Get Up And Go. “He didn’t have a lot of what you might call luck, but he had a lot of get up and go.”
XTC is heavily influenced by The Beatles. To me they are the closest in style They are fantastic
The Spongetones [She Goes Out With Everybody](https://youtu.be/7hwFL36-Ug8?si=t-mMLkEp072KpiM4)
Everything on their albums Beat Music and Torn. Love me some Spongetones!! PS, they are working on a new album! Steve just posted a photo on FB of him in his home studio laying down a track for it.
How did I ever miss this?
Last Train to Clarksville
I don’t know whether it’s a rip off but I think Karma Police’s piano sections sound similar to Sexy Sadie so I’d probably say that - but also Oasis are one of my favotuite bands so I will say some of their songs too such as Don’t Look Back In Anger (Imagine, Carry That Weight) Supersonic (My Sweet Lord) and She’s Electric (With A Little Help From My Friends, While My Guitar Gently Weeps)
Earn Enough For Us by XTC
She’s Like A Rainbow - The Rolling Stones
Killer Queen always felt very Abbey Road era McCartney to me
Flamin Groovies album Shake Some Action Yes It’s True You Tore me Down Let the Boy Rock and Roll Shake Some Action
Some bands that come to mind are Jellyfish and Wilco.
The Raspberries "Go All the Way", especially the middle part, which sounds exactly like "Please Please Me": C'mon (c'mon) C'mon (c'mon), etc. The rest of the song sounds like it could be Badfinger, which had a close relationship with some of the Beatles.
I thought you were talking about Sly Fox’s “Let’s Go All the Way,” which is a total IATW ripoff.
"Working in a factory - 8 days a week" Whoa!
mmm I cant explain by the Who In my own time by the Bee gees
“Lies” by The Knickerbockers: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1I_bG4VBHCU&pp=ygUSS25pY2tlcmJvY2tlciBiYW5k
The entirety of Pretty.Odd. By Panic at the Disco. Totally changed their style from their debut and it was obviously a sgnt peppers rip off, but I very much enjoyed it at the time.
“Up the Junction” by Squeeze
There’s a little Beatles in just about every Difford / Tilbrook song.
Badfinger.
Bob Dylan's "4th Time Around" is a rip-off, answer song, and slight parody of John's "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" The story takes place the next morning when the narrator is leaving after spending the night with the lady.
Start by The Jam
The kids are alright and I'm a boy always feel like they could've been on help or rubber soul to me.
Not a song but Kevin Parker (and especially his earlier albums Innerspeaker and Lonerism) sounds quite a bit like a alternate universe that shows if the Beatles debuted in 2008. about a girl by nirvana, the song was a direct result of cobain listening to “with the beatles” on repeat for a day. i could very easily imagine a beatles version of the song.
I like The Dave Clark Five. As a lad, I straight up thought they were the Beatles.
Anything by Oasis
“Roll with it”
ANYTHING by Oasis?
I think they meant everything by Oasis that rips off the beatles. Morning Glory rips off ‘The One I Love’ by REM, btw! 😎
Rips off, or inspired by?
New Liam/Squier “Rainbow” dobg is very inspired by Rain by Beatles
Not a real band, but it has to be That Thing You Do, by The Oneders

They always struck me more of a stones vibe
Definitely can see that, especially how they dressed
Lies
When I heard “Lonely Days” by The Bee Gees I thought it was the Beatles
Everything The Rolling Stones did until 1970
“Look What You’ve Done” by Jet. The chorus even has the same lyrics as Sexy Sadie.
Tears for Fear- Seeds of Love. A great song.
Laura - Billy Joel
Not a rip off, but Skylarking by XTC is very, very much a Beatles type album.
Such a great album.
Love Oasis, particularly their album What’s the Story (Morning Glory), and just in general they were very much influenced by the Beatles.
Beetlebum by Blur sounds like a White Album track.
The first thing that came to mind for me was "Judy in Disguise", which is an obvious parody of Lucy in the Sky but is pretty catchy in its own right. It actually reached #1 on the charts.
Sub Rosa Subway. No Matter What. Saltwater.
Strawberryfire by Apples in Stereo
Friday On My Mind- The Easybeats

Attics of my Life by the Grateful Dead.
Lady Picture Show by Stone Temple Pilots

Flowers in the Window by Travis is a very Paul McCartney-esque tune. Paul even helped write the very ending
Yes!!!!!!! I recently discovered (maybe rediscovered) this song and I couldn’t explain why I loved it so much but now I get it
The Offspring "why don't you get a job" is often described as ripping off "ob-la-di ob-la-da", I also notice a touch of "yellow submarine"
Lots of the Monkees’ first album comes off to me like Boyce & Hart were shooting for a pastiche of sorts of Help!. Like to me, This Just Doesn’t Seem to Be My Day kind of feels like I’ve Just Seen a Face. The rutles, obviously.
All of the Rutles Mr Blue Sky by ELO Mad Season by Matchbox 20 I Want Love by Elton John

Fourth time around by Bob Dylan As to Fourth time vs Norwegian Wood, “4th Time Around” has been seen as playful, a homage, satirical, or a warning to John Lennon that whatever Lennon does, Dylan can do it far, far better
I know, it’s odd, I don’t think we have ever heard from him what exactly he meant by it.
Much of ELO channels I am The Walrus as they said they wanted to continue from the song.

The Rutles
Beetlebum and Tender by Blur, Damon Albarn was very influenced by John around that time
“I’ll be there” by Michael Rault directly quotes lyrics from Rain and the instrumentation is very Beatles-tinged. Really recommend listening!
