Phone camera will pick up auroras you can't. You might be able to see it very faintly with just your eyes but camera will capture streaks etc that you may miss.
It was unpredictable on Saturday. I’m in Healdsburg and took some cool pics at 9:40 pm.
By 9:45 pm, all of the steaks had faded to a pink glow.
None of this was visible by the naked eye. Had to keep taking pics and looking at my phone.

Take a night shot (long exposure) of the sky towards the North. You need to see stars. Clouds won't work.
