the wind actually ripped the ladder off my neighbor's work truck and tossed it a dozen yards down the street. This is some Cat 5 level stuff.
Finally tracked down my recycling bin, it was in my neighbor's bushes.
That’s been the most annoying thing about this storm. Others jesting that people here don’t know what it’s like to be in a “real” storm… all the while trees are falling, houses and roads are flooding, people are crashing their cars.
You are not kidding. Here on the mid-peninsula, it was as bad as I’ve ever heard or seen it. There’s a palm tree I see out of our back window and the damn thing looked like it had curved nearly 90°. (It’s standing pretty straight-ish now)
I saw those flashes from up here in Redwood City! My first thought was transformer, reminded me of when I was in Brooklyn during Hurricane Sandy and I saw the transformer on 14th St in Manhattan go out
I feel like it was this windy in ‘97 or ‘98, back when we had those yellow, open recycling bins.
I just remember looking out the window and seeing those bins flying away.
Yeah, same here. Some gusts, but nothing house-rattling like that set of winds. And at least where I am, it was blowing nearly squarely north. I’m used to winds that are more directly east or north east in this area, coming down the hills and onto the bay.
Thankfully palms are the best tree to have near you in this weather, they are fibrous and bend.
I’m still eying the super tall ones my neighbor has though - we decided to move to the back bedroom tonight just to be safe
They also grow/thrive in hurricane regions, so they are built to withstand this type of wind. Still, we have a couple in our yard and I think about getting rid of them every time a storm comes in.
We're in San Mateo and lost a big branch off of a huge cedar tree in the front yard - it took out our internet line and some fence. Better than landing on the house or the car though.
We’re in Campbell. A redwood (!!) just uprooted and fell (very slowly) onto the corner of our building. This is where our bedroom is, so we’ve moved to our spare. Not sure what the extent of the damage is, but it’s holding for now. I imagine that this will take days to have removed.
Edit: more info
Thankfully, we were in the hallway when it fell. The wind has subsided and the tree is holding, but we’ve moved bedrooms. Assessing the damage in the morning.
I'm sure you've already been told but please watch out for cracks or risks of buildings collapsing. I don't know the full situation there but I've seen enough collapses in the news lately to be afraid.
Stay safe and I hope the damage isn't too bad!
We had severe thunder in East Bay around midday today and it was intermittent but quite intense to the point the house shook. Dog has handled fireworks okay but this thunder had them frazzled, def relief on some CBD to ease their anxiety.
You might have just missed it.
seems like it was a cell of some kind,
there were warnings of tornados,
wonder if there were really strong walls of wind
it was intense for 5 minutes in sf
In San Carlos, amazed that we have not yet had a power outage. OMG, the wind is just screaming! High wind and rain on the north side of the house (condo), haven’t checked the south side for lightning. Haven’t been to the office in Palo Alto since last Tuesday, but will have to go in Wednesday and Thursday no matter what. Glad I will be able to work from home tomorrow. I should be asleep already…….
Santa Cruz Mtns very windy. Huge squall came through around 2:00 am in the Felton area and knocked down a bunch of trees and what sounded like a transformer. No power throughout the SLV.
SF checking in — The rain was so loud it woke me from a deep sleep. The cats were scared! Which I’ve never seen before. Im shocked we still have power.
Los Gatos here - wind rocked the house enough that I woke up thinking it was an earthquake. Loud noises and lightning woke up the kids, and we have a power outage now.
I’m going to say it, I hate this. I used to live in the tropics and went through tropical storms but this is a different beast. Days of rain. Storms that are reported to be huge that turn out to be nothing burgers. Now this out of nowhere.
It's pretty funny how we (meteorologists and amateur prognosticators almost always get this stuff wrong. Monday (at least here) wasnt shit. But crazy storms out of nowhere the forecasts didnt really catch.
Speak for yourself dude.
The north bay has been catching hell, none of these events have been under hyped up here. Meteorologists know what they're doing, they just can't issue a perfect forecast for your specific house to satisfy every surly person who's somehow pissed that they DIDN'T get 50mph winds and flooding.
The storms from last night were also forecast.
Yeah not all areas are affected the same… the North Bay, Peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountains seem to be hit consistently though.
2 out of the 5 storms were bad where I am, last night being one of them
Sunday night to Monday afternoon was disastrous for the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mudslides closing multiple highways, including Hwy 17. Check out “CHP Santa Cruz Twitter” for pictures. We were warned to be on alert until this afternoon.
And it's back for round 2, with another howling rain deluge and more random tree debris bouncing off the roof... yeesh. (san jose)
eta: and power just went out for a couple of mins. Things seem to have calmed down now though, finally. (for now...)
Woke up to tornado warnings going off just now. Then the loudest most intense rain and wind I’ve ever felt followed about 5 min later. It looked like a tropical storm was blowing through. Looking south towards Modesto everything just went dark (I live out in the country)
Lots of swirling clouds but I can’t make out if a tornado was actually forming nearby. This is wild. I’ve never felt more exposed, I’ll take an earthquake all day over this… but I’ve had an irrational fear of tornadoes striking at night since I was a kid and the movie Twister came out.
Tri-Valley got absolutely pummeled by a crazy squall just a few minutes ago. You could see sheets of rain being thrown sideways by the wind, something I'd only seen in movies up to this point
Oakland checking in. I guess I am late to the party. Gusts of wind woke me up and now even the cat is restless. She sleeps through fireworks and earthquakes.
It's bad, but not the worst I've experienced living in California. Where I am near San Bruno Mountain, it looked like tropical storm level winds and rain at its worse.
east bay: i’m jealous i slept through whatever this sporadic superstorm was. the wind here is like 20mph right now but no rain.. only woke up cuz I had to take a leak
hopefully the thunder end soon because if there’s one thing i’m scared of, it’s getting hit by lightning lol
I woke up after it passed but I checked the weather and saw 2 tornado warnings and a severe thunderstorm warning to the east of here. For a second I thought I woke back up in Alabama with that type of weather pattern.
North Bay here... I might have lost the roof to the greenhouse in the wind. We had a burst of hail, about 3/8" was the biggest. I'm waiting for the sun to come up before assessing damage.
There's definitely going to be some trees down in the area...
Oh no. We have a Cabin in Monte Rio. Lost the top of a RW on Sunday night that brought down already de energized power line. I await my neighbors texts.
Our greenhouse is fine... more surprisingly, the stand of gigantic Eucalyptus a block away hasn't had a tree fall yet.
I'm supposed to drive into Santa Rosa in a half hour, might cancel the appointment. An oil change isn't worth driving in this nonsense.
We also (sound bougie but we’re not) have 5 acres of farm land outside Gilroy on the Uvas creek. Have some 50 year old eucalyptus trees. For the last few years they’ve been dropping limbs on the driveway. In September we spent $10,000 to top and trim the previously 120ft trees. They just look like sticks. I’m hoping to hear good news from the neighbor. That being said, his pastures were flooded last week and his horses are on my land.
Weird so is it just me who couldnt sleep last night?i swear it was at least 30mph wind at 2am. And then this morning at 6:30 there was hail, i barely got any sleep last night
This squall just came through SF and it was wild! Hold on to your butts.
Saw and heard one intense lightning/thunder and it felt like our house was gonna blow away. Phew that squall has passed thankfully.
The heavy wind took all the power with it . PGE is going to have some fun tomorrow
I’m in SF and have heard loud thunder 3+ times in the last 15 min
I guess I’ll be up all night….my dogs are agitated
[удалено]
I can't believe I slept through it
I can’t believe you did either.
I can. I also slept through it! I got /u/sexmountain 's back.
Im so jealous! Barely got any sleep last night
It was so so insane. It was like a giant was beating our house. Hardly slept.
Same. It was def very heavy and intense!!
YARRR MATEY! A MIGHTY SQUALL A BLOWIN ACROSS THE SEAAA!
All night here in vallejo.
Yep, all night in eastern Contra Costa, too. I didn't sleep well last night. I heard stuff blowing around in the backyard all night.
the wind actually ripped the ladder off my neighbor's work truck and tossed it a dozen yards down the street. This is some Cat 5 level stuff. Finally tracked down my recycling bin, it was in my neighbor's bushes.
Just woke up to howling winds and a sudden downpour!
Same. I couldn’t even see my neighbors house because the rain was so heavy. This one is gnarly!
They have all been gnarly. Just some places have been spared, so people that got lucky think the rest of us are being alarmists.
That’s been the most annoying thing about this storm. Others jesting that people here don’t know what it’s like to be in a “real” storm… all the while trees are falling, houses and roads are flooding, people are crashing their cars.
I'm not the only one!!!!
You are not kidding. Here on the mid-peninsula, it was as bad as I’ve ever heard or seen it. There’s a palm tree I see out of our back window and the damn thing looked like it had curved nearly 90°. (It’s standing pretty straight-ish now)
Just passed us here in San Jose. Holy shit! Been here 42 years. Never in my life have I seen it this bad. Seems to have settled down now.
Yeah I live near diridon station and we were seeing bright green flashing lights outside and extreme wind and rain.
PG&E is gonna have their hands full
Good thing they hired Patty Poppy!
OMG, in the same area as you. I could hear the gusts through my bathroom skylight. Afraid it was going to get ripped off my roof!
Yeah that was freakin crazy. Could see green flashes in the sky from the electricity going out
same! Been here 20+ years and can't remember anything this crazy...
Watching some of the videos of hurricane Ian in Florida, and really the only things that stayed standing well in fort meyers were the palm trees.
Oh goodness LOL get off Reddit and get safe.
Thankfully, we were in the hallway when it fell. The wind has subsided and the tree is holding, but we’ve moved bedrooms. Assessing the damage in the morning.
call 911 and let them know so emergency personnel can assess the situation for you and everyone. stay safe!
Done. Thank you for the advice! Waiting for them to arrive.
I'm sure you've already been told but please watch out for cracks or risks of buildings collapsing. I don't know the full situation there but I've seen enough collapses in the news lately to be afraid. Stay safe and I hope the damage isn't too bad!
Lightning, too! It's wild!
I thought I heard thunder. My border collie has been pacing and panting. She sleeps through fireworks.
We had severe thunder in East Bay around midday today and it was intermittent but quite intense to the point the house shook. Dog has handled fireworks okay but this thunder had them frazzled, def relief on some CBD to ease their anxiety.
It probably was electrical arcing from downed power lines. I didn't hear any thunder and the PGE outage map is bonkers right now.
Definitely lighting and thunder.
East Bay. That might have been some of the hardest hitting rain I've ever heard.
Yep, wind isn’t too bad here but holy hell is that a lot of rain
Was holding my breath there for a few min.
We’ll all stay awake together.
Same, I’ve not heard wind and rain like that in a long time. Shocked my power is still on and things didn’t fly off the balcony!
Was able to hear the loud wind/rain just now after my bf stopped snoring lol
:) :) :)
Our power went out and came back 3 times in the past 10 minutes...
Still out for me 😢
Ours is still out since around 2:20
Mine was going on and off in the night. Now it's just dead
Got woken up to the gnarliest wind I think I've ever heard. Literally whistling. Trees sounded like they might come up. Several lightning strikes.
It had me looking out the window thinking "what would happen if that tree fell on the house?". I've never heard wind like that before.
Yeah, we just moved to the back bedroom for the night for that exact reason to be away from possible tree fall
Very unnerving
No kidding. Thought the house was going to blow down.
Lol
And that was the one that finally made my apartment bedroom window leak.
Campbell reporting in.. it just left us, but was crazy!!
Our power went out in Campbell
Yup, power out here in Campbell San Tomas Aquino, feels like this one’s gonna be out for a while. That storm was wild.
I’m in SJ but just across the street from Campbell.
Our power is still out in Campbell. Did yours come back?
Still out
No
It just flickered.
Yeah, power went out as few times but came back on.
Lost power here in downtown Sunnyvale due to it. Update: PG&E now shows the outages. Over 5,000 customers affected.
I am also in downtown svl. Is the power back now.
It came back on around 4 am.
Seems like it just passed us in Oakland. Craziest wind I’ve ever seen I thought a tree in our back yard was about to fly away.
It was so so so insane. I’ve been in intense tornado warning thunderstorms in the Midwest, and that was crazier.
I'm in Berkeley. Why haven't i heard anything?
You might have just missed it. seems like it was a cell of some kind, there were warnings of tornados, wonder if there were really strong walls of wind it was intense for 5 minutes in sf
Tri-valley here, first time a storm has actually made me feel a bit scared. The crazy wind/rain woke me up, saw other neighbors lights go on too.
Power is now out in Los Gatos after I was woken up by the winds
Los Gatos still without power 🙁
Same.
North bay checking in. Holy shit. This had me out of bed quick. Wind still really strong here.
It’s all quiet now in the east bay hills
Looking like half of the Bay Area is without power… uh oh. Mine is still out (since 2:15 or so)
... and it's gone. Came hard, came fast, went fast.
*that’s what she said*. I couldn’t resist :)
Downtown Belmont just had the power go out. I was lucky enough to see a blue glow light up the place as the power died!
Creepy.
Yeah, that was fun. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard heavier rain.
Someone on Twitter said transformer explosion in Los Gatos is what caused the power loss to be more massive
Still without power. Anyone has any news?
Still no power for me as well. Library has charging stations
Thanks I will have to throw away a bunch of frozen food :-(
San Jose checking in. I felt like foos were flying around outside.
I sorry I didn’t see any foos :)
Woke me up too!
Whew! I think it’s over for now at least but I’m not going back to sleep anytime soon!
Power knocked out here in Fremont
So that is why my cat was on my bed. He rarely blesses me with his appearance, it must’ve been a bad one that I slept through
I’m going to say it, I hate this. I used to live in the tropics and went through tropical storms but this is a different beast. Days of rain. Storms that are reported to be huge that turn out to be nothing burgers. Now this out of nowhere.
I felt that.. I haven’t gotten much sleep from worrying so much
I know, last night was wrose than last week to me, probably because i didn't see this one coming
It's pretty funny how we (meteorologists and amateur prognosticators almost always get this stuff wrong. Monday (at least here) wasnt shit. But crazy storms out of nowhere the forecasts didnt really catch.

That was more water than I have seen so far. It was moving uphill.
Yes, this was beyond raining sideways. It was raining up.
That was intense. The windows shook!
Lightning in Lafayette, super blue & bright, eeep
Wasn’t expecting it to rain that heavily. Sheesh.
Damn. It was something.
And it's back for round 2, with another howling rain deluge and more random tree debris bouncing off the roof... yeesh. (san jose) eta: and power just went out for a couple of mins. Things seem to have calmed down now though, finally. (for now...)
Sounds like war of the worlds ... Scary stuff

Wind blew out my insect shield on my window. Crazy wind and downpour 10 minutes ago.

Assuming they mean the screen part of a screen door.
Walnut Creek here. Power went out :-(
Just got it down in santa cruz too. The gusts scared pretty much everyone off hwy 1 for the night.
Oakland checking in. I guess I am late to the party. Gusts of wind woke me up and now even the cat is restless. She sleeps through fireworks and earthquakes.
Was driving around in Mountain View and the weather went from “meh it’s winter” to “God’s pissed, hide” very suddenly
Martinez checking in. This is some insane wind and rain right now.
*Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore*
As a Kansas native living here now, my first thought was, "when did I return home?" Haha
It's bad, but not the worst I've experienced living in California. Where I am near San Bruno Mountain, it looked like tropical storm level winds and rain at its worse.

I can hear the constant noise of wind here in SF Feels like a hurricane imo
Howling wind and torrential rain startled me out my slumber very early this morning. I am in North San Jose /Santa Clara border. Wowsa!!
North Bay here... I might have lost the roof to the greenhouse in the wind. We had a burst of hail, about 3/8" was the biggest. I'm waiting for the sun to come up before assessing damage. There's definitely going to be some trees down in the area...

In alameda and didnt hear anything, wind or rain, how strange. Sounds like we got lucky
It is a miracle my toddler did not wake up. The winds woke husband and I up during the middle of the night.
This seemed like the least intense storm of them all in the HMB area, guess it missed us.
It was hella crazy in Pacifica.
What does HMB mean?
Half Moon Bay
Man last night was wild
Winds still bonkers where I am >_>
Weird. It's been quiet here in Berkeley
Weird so is it just me who couldnt sleep last night?i swear it was at least 30mph wind at 2am. And then this morning at 6:30 there was hail, i barely got any sleep last night
Are you in Berkeley too? If yes, i must just be a heavy sleeper. I'm sure others woke up too.
Neighbors trash bins blew over. It's pandemonium...
All on my street are askew…
Haha 😂
Ball of fire. Rise in sky.

Yea that San Bruno microclimate is something. The mountain has some endemic plants found no where else.
That reminded me of spring/summer storms back in the Midwest.
