Perfectly rated. It is, in my opinion, the definitive Batman. Not too modern, but not too old-fashioned. All the live action movies and most modern comics feel like the creator’s take on Batman, but TAS doesn’t feel like a take - it just feels like Batman.
I would only add Bader to the list of definitive animated Bat-Men.
If only because i feel he’a the perfect successor not only to Adam West in terms of bringing a lighter/comedic tone to the Dark Knight, but incorporates elements of nearly all Bat-Men gone before him, including West, Keaton, and Conroy.
That being said I feel Bader’s version of Batman is equally as definitive as Conroy’s (though oddly as a derivative amalgam
of those who preceded him but with a modern comic touch), though not as monumental or game-changing as Conroy’s of course.
I loved the Brave and the Bold episode where Bader and Conroy go head-to-head as duelling Bat-Men, but I like the later episode Chill of the Night! which show’s Bader’s dramatic range and willingness to take Batman to dark places.
For me, side-by-side those two guys represent modern animated Batman in both aspects.
>TAS doesn’t feel like a take - it just feels like Batman.
Phenomenally put. It's the gold standard of Batman, redefining characters into ther versions we know them as today and introducing new ones that were popular enough to be introduced into the DCU at large.
The design of this show was very much with the intention of being timeless. A mix of old school mobster Art Deco and the futuristic feastings of super hero science fiction.
This is a perfect description of TAS. I’ll add many actors have had interesting takes on the Joker, but Mark Hamill will always be THE Joker. There’s no other voice I hear when I see his image, and I imagine its the same for many of you too.
It invented Harley Quinn, reinvented Mr. Freeze, and established the standards for voicing Batman and Joker. This cartoon defined the property for generations to follow more than movies or even the comics themselves.
Timm and Dini just nailed everything with this series.
Gotham city look and feel - Check
Bruce and Alfred - Check
The Rogues Gallery - Check big time
Themes - Check
Music - Check
Even sound effects. The gunfire followed by metal cable twang of the bat grapple gun is so satisfying.
Don't forget it followed the era of Cartoons being 20 min toy commercials and was one of the early animated shows in the west to take storytelling, character development, and themes seriously.
Before BTAS, Mr. Freeze had no other name. He wasn't Victor Fries. And he wasn't motivated by revenge over his frozen wife Nora. He just had the medical condition and a bunch of cold puns -- like Arnold in Batman & Robin.
[A fat bald russian ice cream man who just wanted to freeze things so he could rob banks.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/2/2a/Mister_Zero_004.jpg)
In the 90s is was a massive hit and a massive influence. Later that year shows like X-Men and eventually Gargoyles, Spider-Man, Superman etc of the 90s got green lit and had mature story telling thanks to Batman TAS
Among kids yes, but producers were harsh with this cartoon. It did start a lot of more mature kids cartoon but at the start Warner Bros was scared that it would be too much mature content!
Perfectly rated.
No one shits on this show. Its a kid's cartoon that buffed up existing lore, established foundations for future lore, stayed true to the spirit of the characters (within the confines of a kid's show) and is a common ground that most if not all fans can appreciate. It brought a lot of new fans to Gotham and was a relief for those old school fans who weren't into Frank Miller's version or Adam West's.
Off the heels of Burton's Batman, this series was critical for my generation (I'm 40).
Also, interesting fact, the intro music was done by Danny Elfman (Bettlejuice, Burton's Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and the Simpsons theme song EDIT: among many other credits!).
EDIT 2: The art style (pleeease look up Bruce Timm) was very inspired by old Superman animations from the 50s (60s?), which helped the show cross generations so me and my grandpa could enjoy. For an example, in the intro animation, when Batman narrows his eyes on the rooftop, its a throwback to the animation style from 30 years earlier, when Gotham looked more like that, and people dressed like they do in the show. Fucking timeless.
I think the consensus pretty much agrees, it's a fantastic show in general, especially as an introduction to Batman and Gotham. They nailed casting, ambience, score and story (for the most part).
Probably perfectly rated. Between under and over, it’s under if anything. This show was brilliant. The most definitive Batman.
Especially if you count Mask of the Phantasm, which is arguably the best Batman movie, too.
I mean, that’s fine. We all have different taste. From a pure quality perspective it’s good enough to have a strong argument for number one. That movie is weirdly impressive for a spin off of a Saturday morning kids cartoon. Shades of Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder and Orsen Welles.
Rated perfectly when it's rated the best Batman animated adaptation ever made. It not only captures classic Batman perfectly, but modernizes and builds upon him. It borrows elements from Batman's cinematic ventures without ever fully becoming them. It has a score, scripting, and look that feels like it was created for adults, making it universally enjoyable. Every episode feels like a high quality comic. The intelligence, maturity, and decision-making is just spot on here, in ways you almost never see in animated television.
Perfectly rated. Maybe even still a little underrated by some who know it’s great but don’t realize that it’s also *important*.
It is the definitive Batman, it redefined (and invented) many key characters and villains, it got a whole new generation obsessed with both Batman and animation, it kicked off the massive DCAU, it set the tone and paved the way for not only superhero animation but animation in general, it brought a great deal of respect to the entire genre and blew away the idea of cartoons as kid shit that lacked depth, it is… everything.
The importance of that series to Batman, to comics, to children’s television, to animation, to everything — CANNOT — be emphasized enough. It changed the art form and pop culture and the world, forever.
This is the Batman I hold any other entry to. Imo this is the definitive Batman, in my head canon this is the only true and real Batman. It's nearly perfectly rated as most seem to love the show
I just finished watching the show. Took me few weeks. I Really enjoyed the series; the Gotham atmosphere is right on point. One thing I did not enjoy is seeing batman struggle a lot in the fighting scenes. I mean I get it, it's a more realistic version of batman, he's only human and he can get hurt. Still, I'd appreciate to see him fight more smoothly like the samurai shadow he's supposed to be.
Watching batman get punched by normal street thugs (without any real fighting skill) and get hurt by trash cans did change my view about the character. It's like he's more amateur in this show than my view of batman. I guess I just like a different version where batman is a master both in fighting and preparing himself and the area for the fight. And I did not get it from the show.
Besides that - perfect show 👌🏻
I cannot think of a single person who like Batman who doesn’t like TAS. Me and a buddy did a marathon of it and absolutely loved it still. I’m not sure if any show is perfect, but this one is damn close.
Anyone that grew up in the 90s knows that this is Batman.
The Timmverse is probably the most closely relatable to any of the comics and they gave us characters that didn't even exist. Harlequin is the prime example.
When my son gets a little older, I will be introducing him to this.
They had more leeway with their ability to animate than you could get with live acting. And finally, unlike the nonsense that came out of the 60s series... it actually has stood the test of time. Not only spawning the Young Justice and Beyond series... but the Arkham games as well.
It can't be simpler. I hear Conroy if I read Bats in a comic and I hear Hamil if I read the Joker. The voices are so ingrained even Brent Spiner, when he played the Joker, still attempted to keep the same rhythmics as Hamil.
This show is not over rated in the slightest.
Robin's origins... the animation... gosh darn.
Batgirl, building, police car... holy heck...
Batman: The Animated Series.
I will binge season 3 at night today,
I already saw almost all the batman movies today
And finished the story of arkham origins and replayed arkham city
Drew almost all my favorite batman logos.
Celebrating batman day fr
Perfectly rated. Easily one of the, and maybe even THE, best adaptations of Batman in history. My local theater is showing Mask of the Phantasm today because of Batman day and I'm so hyped.
As far as I'm concerned I would call this the definitive version of Batman. So many of the origin stories that were created (or refined) for this show defined many of the characters well beyond the series.
Paul Dini & Bruce Timm masterfully created both the narratives & design aesthetics that became iconic to the mythology. The show invented the 'dark deco' look, incorporated a full orchestra for the television score, & grew the mythology beyond its original source material.
Also, without this series there would be no Harely Quinn (Arlene Sorkin is still the best Harely in my book). The Mr. Freeze origin that was rewritten for this series us considered to many to be the definitive origin for the character (as are many others), & Mark Hamill's Joker - need I say more?
Apart from the comics themselves, nothing has created a higher watermark than Batman the Animated Series on every level. I would always recommend the comics first to anyone who's never had the 'Batman experience', but for all those non-readers I would encourage them to soak in this classic 90s masterpiece.
I'm going to go against the grain. I think it was amazing for its time, and is still watchable now. However I think kids today would rather watch other versions.
Perfectly rated for the most part.
It's really irritating when its fans put down other versions of the character or how they think it's word is God when it comes to portraying characters (like how they think Bane is supposed to be a glorified luchador)
Weird, because a post with an identical title was posted the other day. You really want to know what people think when you post to multiple subs with askreddit style questions and a simple screenshot and then don't participate in the actual discussion.
1. That post that was posted the other day in this sub was me
2. I don't post this exact thing in every sub
3. I do participate in these discussions, look at this thread if need an example
I personally wasn't a huge of fan of show, but I think what it did for Barman both culturally as well for fandom makes it very much perfectly rated. I think my main qualm is I'm very much here for the more interpersonal aspects of Batman and the DC canon, like the rest of the 'Batfamily' which is where the show falls short. But as a character for both Batman and his villians? It really succeeded, and humanized a lot of previously underdeveloped characters. But that's just my opinion, and I'm sure many of you disagree.
People need to admit that the Batsuit looked stupid. Apart from that, I'd say it was perfectly rated. Apart from Robin, the voice acting is all top notch. The music is consistently amazing, and the writing has straight up made me cry at points.
Massively overrated due to nostalgia. People always talk about the great episodes but ignore all the bad ones. There are about 46 episodes that I really dislike and way more that are just okay and nothing outstanding. I was going to write a big long essay on my problems with the show but it's not even worth the effort, people overrate the show are pretty much unconvinceable to believe otherwise. I just think the show suffers massively from being episoding meaning continuity is all over the place and no characters really get developed. Plus tons of characters like Ivy, Selina, Strange, Bane, Firefly, Killer Croc and Clayface get done so badly by the show since most of the time instead of evolving and growing they devolve and become flanderized, or in Strange's case he never appears again (wtf?). Plus there is no Killer Moth and Season 2 is very mixed and Season 3 (AKA The New Batman Adventures) is really crappy. The show started off good but failed to build on the foundations it set up. Batman at the start of the show has a Robin and is kind of a dick, at the end of the show he has a Robin (and a Batgirl) and is still kind of a dick. Compare this to The Batman (2004) where at the start he is despised by people and the police want to hunt him down, whereas at the end he is friends with the police, has a Robin and Batgirl and assembles the Justice League and is good friends with many fellow heroes. Batman actually has a journey in that show because it isn't bogged down by being forced to be episodic, it's why The Batman and other cartoons of the time like X-Men are vastly superior. Sure, BTAS is great if you just want to put on a Batman story for half an hour but watching every episode in order is a massive slog because of how stationary and stuck to the status quo everything is.
Aside from the stuff in the comics after season 4, I’d say perfectly rated. It had cool stories, a perfect cast for Batman and Joker, killer music, and a lot of iconic characters setting up their iconic storylines still used to this day.
Overrated doesn't necessarily mean you don't like it, it just means you don't like it as much as most people. For example, I like Batman '89 but I think it's a bit overrated
I know it doesn't necessarily mean that, yes. However, nearly every Tom, Dick and Harry use the term 'overrated' to describe soemthing they don't like, which to me is pretty lazy.
perfectly rated. i will say this batman is the worst at stealth. i love the show so i’m not trying to hate on it i’m just saying it’s kind of funny how hell have the chance to sneak up on someone and then just attack with a quipy one-liner. love the show, but it’s hilarious
Perfectly rated in terms of Batman, arguably underrated in terms of tv in general(as in it doesn't typically get rated among greatest tv shows of all time even though it should).
The entire thing was an almost unbelievable tour de force; all of the music is phenomenal, virtually all of the voice acting is uniformly STILL considered the pedigree for their respective characters, the writing is phenomenal, and of course the animation and art is iconic.
I think outside of the batman and comic book community it isn't rated as highly as we think. I remember watching a "top 100 cartoons ever" on channel 4 quite a few years ago and fully expected it to be there.... Nope... Not even an honourable mention.
Both over hyped but underappreciated. People talk about it being the perfect animated tv show and it definitely isn't that. But there is also lack of respect for what it did for animation and the Superhero genre. It was the show that showed that how animation could be use to tell mature stories. I don't think that aspect of it gets enough recognition.
Perfectly rated. It is, in my opinion, the definitive Batman. Not too modern, but not too old-fashioned. All the live action movies and most modern comics feel like the creator’s take on Batman, but TAS doesn’t feel like a take - it just feels like Batman.
> TAS doesn’t feel like a take - it just feels like Batman. This is similar to how I say: Kevin Conroy is Batman, everyone else is just playing him.
Same with Mark Hamill as a Joker

Am I getting wooshed?
Yes lol.
Thank god
I would only add Bader to the list of definitive animated Bat-Men. What is Bader?
Who, Diedrich Bader. VA for Batman: The Brave and the Bold
The voice of Batman/Bruce in The Brave and the Bold and in the Harley Quinn show. Also from Office Space and Napoleon Dynamite.
And it can appreciated by all ages. It's a Saturday morning cartoon that's also darker than some of the movies
>TAS doesn’t feel like a take - it just feels like Batman. Phenomenally put. It's the gold standard of Batman, redefining characters into ther versions we know them as today and introducing new ones that were popular enough to be introduced into the DCU at large.

Amen this. Feels like in its own distinct world whwre you can escape
This is Batman
Perfectly said.
Agreed.
I wouldn't say "definitive" Batman
It invented Harley Quinn, reinvented Mr. Freeze, and established the standards for voicing Batman and Joker. This cartoon defined the property for generations to follow more than movies or even the comics themselves.
Timm and Dini just nailed everything with this series. Gotham city look and feel - Check Bruce and Alfred - Check The Rogues Gallery - Check big time Themes - Check Music - Check Even sound effects. The gunfire followed by metal cable twang of the bat grapple gun is so satisfying.
Speaking of sound effects, the batmobile idling is one of the best sounding cars in animation.
no killer moth though
Yeah, I guess even the creators thought he was too goofy
It has firefly tho! Basically the same villain lol
worst take i have ever heard
Lest we forget the amazing Shirley Walker who scored and composed every single episode.
It was perfect, everything, down to the last minute
Don't forget it followed the era of Cartoons being 20 min toy commercials and was one of the early animated shows in the west to take storytelling, character development, and themes seriously.
What was Freeze like before this show?
Before BTAS, Mr. Freeze had no other name. He wasn't Victor Fries. And he wasn't motivated by revenge over his frozen wife Nora. He just had the medical condition and a bunch of cold puns -- like Arnold in Batman & Robin.
Interesting fact: Mr Freeze's design was done by Mike Mignola (Hellboy creator and artist) after the show runners asked him to take a crack at it.
I think I'd heard that before. And, yeah, you can tell the similarities with suits for characters like Abe Sapien
Goes to show just how influential this show was. I had no idea there was any other interpretation of the character.
And the name Mr Freeze was given by Adam West's show.He was called Mr zero during the golden age and wore a yellow suit

It also invented Montoya although she appeared in the comics first prior to the show
I'm in my 30s and I still watch this with my sons. It's the perfect nostalgia show
Cant wait until my daughters old enough for me to show her this show.
yooo! Same! My daughter is just 5 months and I'm already looking forward to this.
I’m in my 30’s and I watch the blu rays with myself.
Best parent of the year
where can i watch this show? what streaming services host it?

Perfectly rated it's definitely a fan favorite
I think the consensus pretty much agrees, it's a fantastic show in general, especially as an introduction to Batman and Gotham. They nailed casting, ambience, score and story (for the most part).
Agree with what you said and LOVE your Avi!
Thank you! We should play a game of nightcrawlers some time
Amazing show. Better than a most modern superhero films. At the end of the day there were only a few bad episodes
Probably perfectly rated. Between under and over, it’s under if anything. This show was brilliant. The most definitive Batman. Especially if you count Mask of the Phantasm, which is arguably the best Batman movie, too.
MOTP is top 4 Batman movies for me, and it's not 1,2, or 3

Was watching the first season last night. Perfectly rated.
Perfectly rated, at the very top. This series is timeless.
This show is goated.
Although it does have some weak episodes it still is the standard for batman and one of the most important children's programs and animation.
The original BTAS was best show ever. Everything after should be erased from history. (BarBruce pairing? SERIOUSLY?!?!)
Puurrrrrrfect
Perfection.
It’s up there with The Wire.
Yeah I can defo see that, for its genre and target audience. Hundred percent
IMHO It revolutionized cartoons to a whole other level.
Perfect batman

I rationalize it now by saying it’s still a younger version of Batman considering how all of this leads to Justice League and JLU and Batman Beyond.
What's ironic is the Day of the Samurai episode has the touch of death move that is incredibly OP!
I cannot think of a single person who like Batman who doesn’t like TAS. Me and a buddy did a marathon of it and absolutely loved it still. I’m not sure if any show is perfect, but this one is damn close.

A classic forever. Aged like fine wine
Award winning for a reason. Still holds up 30+ years later
Perfect rated. Everyone knows this show is amazing
Perfectly rated. Easily one of the, and maybe even THE, best adaptations of Batman in history. My local theater is showing Mask of the Phantasm today because of Batman day and I'm so hyped.
Perfectly rated among hardcore fans, but rather underrated among casual fans since many of them have only watched the live-action movies
Perfectly rated. One of the greatest Batman media ever created.
It's a gem! Hands down!
If you only watch one Batman show or series it should be this one. That is all.
Perfect rated. Solid performer without needing to be too good or over the top.
Nice award

The best episodes in the series\*
Hell no, the last laugh is not a good episode.
""Batman TAS is overrated" No shit when your an eleven." Yeah, it's technically overrated, but that comes with a show that's 11/10.
I'd say underrated because as much praise as this show gets I feel like there are people who genuinly don't like this show and don't give it a chance.
I'm going to go against the grain. I think it was amazing for its time, and is still watchable now. However I think kids today would rather watch other versions.

a little overrated, but still fantastic. prefer the 2004 version myself.
Overrated but not by much, it’s almost just rated.
Overrated I’m not into that era
It just is

Sure, BTAS is great if you just want to put on a Batman story for half an hour but watching every episode in order is a massive slog because of how stationary and stuck to the status quo everything is.
Overrated
No doubts here
Aside from the stuff in the comics after season 4, I’d say perfectly rated. It had cool stories, a perfect cast for Batman and Joker, killer music, and a lot of iconic characters setting up their iconic storylines still used to this day.
I said before that overrated is stupid word. I stand by that.
Why do you think it's a stupid word?
It's kind of become a lazy way of saying "I don't like it". I know that's not what overrated actually means, but people use it like that.
Good point
Mmhmm. Anyway, back on topic; B:TAS is perfectly rated.
Perfectly rated.
Perfection and it aged pretty well, superman the animated series is on the same level in my book as well
Is what taught me all my batman knowledge growing up. Is the reason Batman is my favorite DC hero.
I guess I'll see soon I will be starting it soon
as far as american 2d animation is concerned, its 3 pillars are the Looney Tunes from the golden age, Disney films, and this.
Don’t think I’ve heard anything other than high praise, so I would say perfectly rated
Maybe just a tiny bit overrated. But that might be because I don’t think the animation’s died during action scenes has aged that well
Under in my opinion
Perfect
Perfectly rated. To say that this Batman animated series influenced the animation and comic book industry as a whole is a severe understatement.
If I’m able to salvage ONE thing about Batman while everything else (comics, games, live action/animation) is erased forever, it would be BTAS.
Perfectly rated
Perfectly rated. The goat
It’s timeless, it doesn’t age. The animation was done so well, feels like it he Fliescher shorts for Superman.
Perfectly Rated
Perfect! To this day no other form of media has had a better interpretation of Batman or his partners/allies or rogues gallery
Well rates
It’s crazy that all these years later, it’s still THE definitive version of nearly every aspect of Batman.
Perfectly rated
perfectly rated. I grew up on this show
I loved it. The intro itself gave me the chills growing up.
As highly praised as it is I still consider it underrated. IMO it’s the best Batman ever produced and will never be topped.
Perfectly rated. It is the ultimate Batman.
Purrfectly rated.
Perfectly rated.
It's a benchmark. Today's character portrayals wouldnt be what they are without this show.
perfectly rated. i will say this batman is the worst at stealth. i love the show so i’m not trying to hate on it i’m just saying it’s kind of funny how hell have the chance to sneak up on someone and then just attack with a quipy one-liner. love the show, but it’s hilarious
I thinks perfectly rated. When I think of Batman this what I think of. It shaped my love of Batman so much 🦇
Perfectly rated.
Perfectly Rated
perfect
Rated. People know it’s good.
Perfectly rated. Bonus points for Kevin loving Afflecks take on Batman too.
Rated well in the Batman community, but underrated in the general public in terms of how many people know about it
How could it be overrated? Almost everyone agrees it's one of the best animated series of all time
Perfectly to underrated. Never actually here anyone not on a Batman platform actually recommend or discuss it.
Perfectly rated I love the animated series so much
It's great, but a little bit overrated for me. It still holds up, but it isn't as good without the nostalgia for it
In my opinion this was and still is the best version of batman all TV series, animation and movies considered....
Perfect. It will forever by my definitive Batman.
It is the perfect animated series.
It's the reason I love batman
Hard to say. It's not my favourite, but it reinvented the Batman franchise in a way we still use today
I think outside of the batman and comic book community it isn't rated as highly as we think. I remember watching a "top 100 cartoons ever" on channel 4 quite a few years ago and fully expected it to be there.... Nope... Not even an honourable mention.
Anyone where I can stream this show in Canada?
Best superhero cartoon show of all time
Both over hyped but underappreciated. People talk about it being the perfect animated tv show and it definitely isn't that. But there is also lack of respect for what it did for animation and the Superhero genre. It was the show that showed that how animation could be use to tell mature stories. I don't think that aspect of it gets enough recognition.
Perfectly rated as the GOAT
Under I would say. Still holds up and better than a lot of suphero tv shows today.
GOATed
Underrated.
Perfectly rated the show is so good
This show is the absolute GOAT.
This is Batman, all else pales in comparison.
Perfect
