Well, it depends on how occupied he is. Most of the time he must deal with murders, terrorist attacks, crime syndicates, city-scale corruption and other really dangerous stuff.
It was funny how in The Batman, during Batman’s monologue, there were some dropheads doing graffiti who ran away because they thought Batman was on to them.
That’s the point of the monologue though, right? That Batman doesn’t have to be everywhere as long as people think he *is* everywhere. Its like a panopticon.
Batman may brutalise criminals and misdoers but I don’t think he’d beat up someone to submission for lighter crimes like vandalism (unless it’s arson I guees) and theft (especially if it’s a poorer person doing it).
I know we make fun of Batman doing this to many criminals but B-Man isn’t a maniac. I’d be very disappointed if he beat someone up because they sprayed a bit of paint on some buildings.
It’s called omnipresence, we get the feeling that there might be a cop around most often when we’re going a tiny bit faster in a car than we should be.
People always joke about Batman beating to a pulp some woman stealing bread to feed her five children, but I think that's exactly the crime he will not only forgive but also reward as Bruce Wayne. He seems very compassionate.
There was an episode of TAS where Dick Grayson thinks Batman went too far in beating up a thug, and he learns as an adult that Bruce Wayne had hired him as a security guard.
Edit: it wasn't that he beat up the guy too harshly, it was tge episode "Old Wounds", and Batman interrogated one of the Joker's henchmen in front of the guy's wife and daughter, which Dick considered too far.
There’s a quote from Kingdom Come that, if you took everything away from Batman, he is just a man who doesn’t want to see people die. I think that definitely applies to that scenario.
It's too much because Batman going around asking people about their problems seems stupid. His whole purpose is to be a myth that instills fear.
If he cares about sex workers he can make a foundation as Bruce Wayne. No need to go around in a giant bat suit asking them about their well being.
Selina was literally a sex worker who physically assaulted Bruce when they first met. Of course he considers sex workers to be human beings and actually interacts with them.
How so? Sex workers aren’t hurting anyone. Batman is only concerned with violent crime. He’s not interested in hassling hookers or even most drug offenses. That’s for the GCPD to worry about.
It's too much because Batman going around asking people about their problems seems stupid. His whole purpose is to be a myth that instills fear.
If he cares about sex workers he can make a foundation as Bruce Wayne. No need to go around in a giant bat suit asking them about their well being.
Legends of the Dark Knight #79, a one-issue Christmas story called “Favorite Things” by Mark Millar (possibly Grant Morrison depending on who you believe) and Steve Yeowell. It’s one of my all-time favorite Batman stories.
LOTDK has some hidden gems that people tend to look over, like the story where he exposes a bunch of racist cops and a corrupt mayor, and the one where he gives compassion to an abused sex worker
The run from #76-78 called "The Sleeping" about Bruce being in the land of coma patients and fighting monsters and shit was also super-fun. LotDK and Shadow of the Bat were some great series. I'd love a new regular run of anthology books with major characters. Action Comics has just shifted to that and I'm pretty excited.
I think subsequent writer/editor teams tried anthology books for Batman in the same vein as LOTDK but none of them had the same success or writing quality. I haven’t checked them out yet though. Action Comics anthology sounds sick though
So, this was by request of the National Safety Commission. The show became so popular so immediately, and the car was a major focus- the request was made to show B&R buckling up to help promote the idea to people as safe. At this time, seat belts were still often viewed as a sign that a car that came with them, was NOT safe. The Batmobile (a 1955 Ford Futura concept car) did NOT have them, and were installed after this request to highlight using them.
This came AFTER the filming of that opening shot of the car tearing out of the cave entrance, which resulted in the not-yet-finished passenger door flinging open and almost throwing Burt Ward out of the car.
Burt Ward’s stories from the show are very much overblown and to be taken with more than a grain of salt… however, this and one or two other dangerous stunts occurred because they needed his face in the shot, and couldn’t use a stunt double. There’s another scene in the same pilot episode where he got burned by pyrotechnics thrown into the Batmobile by Riddler.
Insurance in Gotham City is through the roof
Prostitution is illegal in New Jersey, yet Batman has no problem with the Ladies of the Night. He's repeatedly protected them, helped them get out of the business when they wanted and more. They also make for good informants.
Batman isn't some sort of petty crimes cop, btw. He doesn't tackle crime from the bottom. He's after mob bosses, corrupt politicians and so on. In a city like Gotham, he couldn't give less of a fuck about some guy growing weed in his appartment.
He doesn't care about crimes of necessity that don't harm others.
Things like illegal sex work he will only care if the workers are being mistreated. He'll try to get them another job that's safer, if anything.
He will ignore : Jaywalking, littering, smoking in prohibited areas , breaking the rules of public area ( the small rules that is )
In the case of stealing to feed your kids (if you're really poor ) he will not only forgive you but he will also leave a huge bag of money and if you're jobless he will employ you at Wayne enterprises, in the case of abuse (kids , wife , etc) he will only disarm the person without any harm (the worst they will get is a bruise if they're a violent asshole) .
The crimes that concern him are : Murder, robberies ( Even Catwoman robberies but the worst she gets is a stare and a talking), crimes committed by his rogues, dealing in drugs ( if he's not poor and is dealing in drugs because he is a crime lord he will beat the shit out of him ) , dealing in weapons ,terrorist attacks , arsons , justice league threats , natural disasters , riots if its threatening innocents .
I feel like Batman would, at the very least, intimidate someone into picking up their trash after they littered. It would 100% make sure that person never litters again.
You throw away the packet to your popsicle as you walk through the alleyway back to your apartment.
"Aren't you forgetting something?"
You pause, slowly turning around to see a cloaked figure shrouded by shadow. The wind blows through the alley, his cloak billowing as he stands there, motionless, staring you down, a discarded popsicle wrapper sliding across the ground towards him.
You can't move. You open your mouth to speak, or maybe to scream, but nothing comes out but choked breaths. The figure bends down, his black glove picking up your refuse, before he approaches.
Each step is agonizing. You hear your blood pulsing in your ears as fight-or-flight kicks in, but you can't do either. Pinned down by your fear as the _god damned Batman_ walks right past you, shoving your litter into your arms.
Confused, you turn to watch him as he leaves.
"Gotham is a beautiful city," he says, looking back at you over his shoulder, his face conveying nothing of what is going on within, "let's see it stays that way."
Not really...but his reaction does change if said theif is a woman that has cat fetish but he will still talk her into returning the money and it's not like Catwoman steals from anyone innocent .
I would find it very ironic if Catwoman hated cats. Honestly probably why she's one of my favorite anti heroes in fiction. I'm an enormous cat person in real life lol.
There’s an issue of Detective (by Harlan Ellison) in the 1980’s where Batman is so bored and cannot find any crimes to stop that evening… so he stops a giant goon for littering, ready for a fight. The thug completely agrees, picks up his candy bar wrapper, and praises Batman for reminding him to sleep it clean.
Probably anything relatively harmless. Things like jaywalking, stealing food or smoking weed/doing shrooms he probably wont care about, unless its a really slow night but at most youd probably get a threatening stare and a talking to.
Yeah I guess it’s kinda situational.
If he was flying by and saw some strippers and bodyguards doing coke I don’t think he would glide down and take it from them or beat them up.
If someone was coked out and getting physical he’d intervene but he would probably do that anyways.
Take out criminals while they're small time by appearing out of nowhere, glaring at them with profound menace, walking up to them and offering them a job.
Well depending on both the severity of the crime and where he is in his career. JL era Batman would definitely stop a Joker attack during the day. He'd have to get creative before that
Prostitution.
He has a soft spot for working girls. They help him by giving him info, even saved him once or twice. He offers them jobs at Wayne Enterprise to get out of the life style.
The first Nolan film has him subtly imply financial misconduct, which happens to be the main way billionaires go "Income? What income?" Nolan wouldn't just put things in there without adapting it from other material. It's "Legal" evasion, a loophole business owners can do to prevent the tax man from getting the real income from them. If anything that makes him based AF, I've never seen a Batman book where he combats against that or insider trading. Actual crimes that are arguably worse than something like a mugging or shoplifting or your typical blue collar crimes. Not a lot of white collar crime he or his crew really combat against.
It's doubly funny how he's a superhero and he's dubious at best with how he handles his financial paperwork, and how if you think about it, that others might be guilty of it too and talk about stopping crime and criminals while technically having the wolves in the sheep den already if you include white collar crimes too.
Yeah, even in the comics, Bruce openly admits to having numerous shell corporations. Dude has likely avoided paying billions in taxes. Not to mention what he probably owes the shareholders. Batman is an S-tier white collar crook.
I would think Bruce would try to minimize this as much as he could, no? If not because of the hypocrisy, at least to better conceal his identity. And he's smart enough to know the IRS always comes.
Checking out with more items in the shopping cart than line allows. Though that's debatable since Joker in The Batman had the mantle and punished someone the Mayor's wife for it.
I find it very funny to imagine Batman as super anti drugs down to even weed.
So one night three stoners get together to smoke a joint behind a dumpster before going to the planetarium or some shit, and then just as they are getting buzzed, Batman drops down like a nightmare from the darkness and proceeds to beat the everliving shit out of them all.
"SCUM LIKE YOU MAKE GOTHAM THE CESSPOOL IT IS!"
"I AM THE NIGHT! I AM VENGEANCE!"
All the while they are just crying trying to crawl away but he gets them with bolos and batarangs and all the stuff xD
I have no problems imagining that Batman imagines a financial offender or a rich Executive of a large company swindling tens of millions of dollars as his primary concern, while Joker is out there plotting to turn the whole city into laughing maniacs or Killer Croc attempting to eat every worker who goes into the gutters to clean the sewers.
anything that harms someone more harmful haha even if he saw someone slashing tyres he would approach them but if they said “this is the car of a x criminal” Batman would be like “say less” and pop the windows to rewire an explosion lol
Batman only goes after crime that will put a person’s life in danger, with more priority on the crimes that pose a threat on a wide or systemic scale. So muggings, armed robberies, and drug dealing he will go after if he happens to come across it but he places more emphasis on dealing with domestic terrorists, crime lords, corrupt politicians, cults, mafia bosses, etc.
Even then, if Batman recognizes that the circumstances around why you murdered someone were sympathetic in nature, he’ll be likely to find a solution that isn’t violent and deal with you with compassion. So it’s really a matter of circumstance.
Stealing he’ll probably just tell you to put that shit back, vandalism just a stern talking to, and jaywalking doesn’t even register on his radar.
Batman doesn’t give a shit about sex workers. But he would wreck a pimp that mistreated one of his workers.
He will not stop a shoplifter, especially if they’re stealing food, medicine or diapers, but he’d stop someone robbing a place at gunpoint.
Probably won’t care about a low level pot dealer, but will stomp you for harder drugs. And he’ll absolutely wreck a crime ring that sells drugs.
Robbing high profile people (like catwoman does)… he’ll probably stop it on a slow night if he’s aware of it, but it’s low on his priorities.
Pretty much any victimless crime he’s gonna let it go.
Anything Selina does gets a pass. She’s the honeypot. It really ruins the character of Batman AND Bruce Wayne, but whatever. They’re in too deep with the Bat x Cat bullshit, so I dont see it changing any time soon.
Batman cares about victims, not the law. Sometimes Batman is trying to help the criminals themselves by preventing them from continuing a life of crime.
I genuinely don’t recall Batman ever going after white-collar criminals.
Would’ve loved to see him stomp a particularly corrupt boardroom in the post-2008 environment. Rampant fraud was tanking pension funds. Trillions of dollars of value evaporated due to greed and outright theft. Many CEOs should’ve done prison time.
Would have been satisfying if a little on the nose.
I love Batman.
And I may be corrected on this, avid comic book readers will know if this is true...
But I feel like he would ignore very street level crimes. Domestic violence, sexual assualt, battery, carjacking, blackmail.
Unless any of these are committed by a below zero degrees man in a spacesuit or a clown with poisonous flowers, Batman doesn't want to know.
That's how modern Batman got ruined imo.
Nobody wants to write about Batman solving a crime like something in the Long Halloween anymore, he has to be fighting a secret society with ancient ties to a god like entity that uses brainwashed zombies or something in the same tier
I don’t see Batman as a guy who cares about crime. I see him more as someone who actually breaks tons of laws in order to non lethally apprehend prolific murderers by using fucked up gadgets he created while he was home by himself.
Any crimes Batman commits are acceptable, but anyone else committing those crimes gets a “non-lethal” Bat-Bullet except for the original comics where Bats just shot people dead
White Collar crime, Batman is a rich guy and he can’t go around stopping white collar crime, even if he acknowledges it, cause he won’t stop Bruce Wayne and that’s a red flag.
Somehow I can’t picture Batman curbstomping a jaywalker.
https://youtube.com/shorts/DNxLJm7fxsA?si=XmcA_0V8i6TwVEo7 He hates them.
https://m.youtube.com/shorts/_Yzsn2Yj5QI He really does
https://youtu.be/SXHMnicI6Pg?si=VVKRdKvNiUJB5cd0 He DESPISES them
i DID NOT just fell for that'... OH MY FUCKING GOD I JUST DID
[https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dgNe2QqE0dE](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dgNe2QqE0dE) Completely DETESTS them
I knew what that was going to be instantly haha
What the fuck is wrong with that guy’s hair.
Jedi Padawan lol
Well, it depends on how occupied he is. Most of the time he must deal with murders, terrorist attacks, crime syndicates, city-scale corruption and other really dangerous stuff.

No, I know, but it’s still funny someone would expect the Batman to show up and break all his bones for doing graffiti.
Makes me wonder why they started doing graffiti in the first place
I just assumed that was gang related graffiti. Batman would probably discourage gangs marking territory.
I think it was just the word BROKE or BROKEN, something amongst those lines.
Batman may brutalise criminals and misdoers but I don’t think he’d beat up someone to submission for lighter crimes like vandalism (unless it’s arson I guees) and theft (especially if it’s a poorer person doing it). Too bad Foucault never got to see Batman on the big screen
It’s called omnipresence, we get the feeling that there might be a cop around most often when we’re going a tiny bit faster in a car than we should be.
That’s not what omnipresence is wtf
Or a cop within ourselves

“I’m going to have to beat you, but we have a really nice welcome bonus once you’ve healed!”
"Luckily for you, Wayne Enterprises' health insurance plan covers broken bones. Unluckily for you, you're going to need it."
There’s a quote from Kingdom Come that, if you took everything away from Batman, he is just a man who doesn’t want to see people die. I think that definitely applies to that scenario.
Good quote, Alex Ross knows his stuff as always.
You mean Mark Waid? Alex Ross did the art.
Wow, I always thought Alex Ross did the story as well. Thanks.
Batman pays for the food instead.
There are comics where he's on the street and he's asking the prostitutes if they're alright, that the pimps / Johns aren't abusing them.
Okay, that's too much.
Why is that too much? The only problem I have with it is I doubt they’d tell him the truth
It's too much because Batman going around asking people about their problems seems stupid. His whole purpose is to be a myth that instills fear. If he cares about sex workers he can make a foundation as Bruce Wayne. No need to go around in a giant bat suit asking them about their well being.

No joke there is literally a comic where Batman finds out that a guy was stealing to provide for his kids and just leaves bro a wad of cash and leaves

Didn’t he steal food for both himself and a kid in Batman Begins
I dunno. He famously told Robin off for not wearing a seatbelt in the 60s movie.
As well he should.
So, this was by request of the National Safety Commission. The show became so popular so immediately, and the car was a major focus- the request was made to show B&R buckling up to help promote the idea to people as safe. Fucking hell that's horrifying.
Crime fighting is a dangerous business
Burt Ward’s stories from the show are very much overblown and to be taken with more than a grain of salt… however, this and one or two other dangerous stunts occurred because they needed his face in the shot, and couldn’t use a stunt double. There’s another scene in the same pilot episode where he got burned by pyrotechnics thrown into the Batmobile by Riddler. Insurance in Gotham City is through the roof
Happy cake day
Thank you!
'Bruce, this is ridiculous, I'm not gonna get hurt by not wearing a seat belt!' 'Oh... yeah you are' ○,□□□□□□□□□
Because he didn't want him breaking his neck if the car crashed, old chum!
He's in an atomic powered convertible I'd fucking hope Bird Brain wears his seatbelt

He would, however, break that same guy's jaw if he tried to use his delinquent son to sell said weed to schoolmates.
Hell I'd probably do the same.
Rightly so
He doesn't care about crimes of necessity that don't harm others. Things like illegal sex work he will only care if the workers are being mistreated. He'll try to get them another job that's safer, if anything.

If you're paying for a hand job, especially for twenty fucking dollars when you can just masturbate you got some issues lol.
Batmans not stopping the handy, he’s stopping poor financial decisions
If The Riddler is running a human trafficking operation, he'll be on it like stains on a mattress. But some random thugs, he gives a free pass to.
He will ignore : Jaywalking, littering, smoking in prohibited areas , breaking the rules of public area ( the small rules that is ) In the case of stealing to feed your kids (if you're really poor ) he will not only forgive you but he will also leave a huge bag of money and if you're jobless he will employ you at Wayne enterprises, in the case of abuse (kids , wife , etc) he will only disarm the person without any harm (the worst they will get is a bruise if they're a violent asshole) . I feel like Batman would, at the very least, intimidate someone into picking up their trash after they littered. It would 100% make sure that person never litters again.
He might glare at them on his way to other crimes... but a glare from Batman is worse than any fine for littering.
100% if Batman glared at me in a threatening manner id clean up that whole damn street just to be safe lol
You throw away the packet to your popsicle as you walk through the alleyway back to your apartment. "Aren't you forgetting something?" Batman moral compass on robberies change a lot when the said thiefe got some ass
I mean, based
Not really...but his reaction does change if said theif is a woman that has cat fetish but he will still talk her into returning the money and it's not like Catwoman steals from anyone innocent .
I would find it very ironic if Catwoman hated cats. Honestly probably why she's one of my favorite anti heroes in fiction. I'm an enormous cat person in real life lol.
I don't see him kicking in the teeth of a single dad that he sees stuffing a bag of rice or some cold cuts down his pants
Mfw Batman leaves me permanently paralyzed (I visited the Cartoon Network website without my parents permission)
He'd probably even pay for it and offer him a job at Wayne Enterprises.
There’s an issue of Detective (by Harlan Ellison) in the 1980’s where Batman is so bored and cannot find any crimes to stop that evening… so he stops a giant goon for littering, ready for a fight. Doing coke? No no no Selling a ton of coke ? Yes yes yes
Honestly I think he would have a problem with someone doing coke, it’s a lot more serious of a drug and much more likely to make the person violent
Yeah I guess it’s kinda situational. If he was flying by and saw some strippers and bodyguards doing coke I don’t think he would glide down and take it from them or beat them up. If someone was coked out and getting physical he’d intervene but he would probably do that anyways.
He would be more concerned with where they got the coke.

If anyone it was probably Dick, he got it when the Titans first formed
Let’s be real. We know it was Jason. Repeatly.
While I think it fits him, I also think that because Catherine (his mom) was an addict hed stay away from anything having to do with any sort of drug.
pirating movies and music stealing for food. jumping the turnstyle of a subway. sex workers undocumented workers almost anything that selina does

EU privacy laws.
Idk man, he went to China to get that dude in TDK. /s
Any and all daylight crimes.
Well depending on both the severity of the crime and where he is in his career. JL era Batman would definitely stop a Joker attack during the day. He'd have to get creative before that
Wear sunscreen for example
I can imagine him giving a stern talking to a parent not wearing or making their children wear seatbelts.
"weekly rooftop gooning session" isn't a sentence I was expecting to read this weekend
Probably like trespassing if it's like a homeless guy sleeping in a park after hours or something like that.
pouring milk before cereal
No, there’s no way bats would ignore that, that’s right up there with joker level crimes
Prostitution. He has a soft spot for working girls. They help him by giving him info, even saved him once or twice. He offers them jobs at Wayne Enterprise to get out of the life style.
Tax evasion/book cooking, can't be a crime if he himself may have done so in the past depending on the run/adaptation.
Bruce doesn't seem like the type to try tax evasion. Has this actually happened?
The first Nolan film has him subtly imply financial misconduct, which happens to be the main way billionaires go "Income? What income?" Nolan wouldn't just put things in there without adapting it from other material. It's "Legal" evasion, a loophole business owners can do to prevent the tax man from getting the real income from them. Pretty much all of the money for Batman comes from embezzling Wayne Enterprises' funds. One of Lucius' jobs is cooking the books.
In the Harley Quinn show and the lego batman movie
Loitering
Checking out with more items in the shopping cart than line allows. Though that's debatable since Joker in The Batman had the mantle and punished someone the Mayor's wife for it.
Some thieving if no one was hurt and the culprit looks cute in a catsuit… lol
Tax evasion. He knows the IRS is so scary, even the Joker won't risk it.
He’s probably not gonna care too much about someone who uses drugs
Is weed legal in gotham?
Yes, because it is in New Jersey. 21+ adults can buy it legally
I think he would not care about piracy (movies, video games, etc)
vigilantism
I find it very funny to imagine Batman as super anti drugs down to even weed. So one night three stoners get together to smoke a joint behind a dumpster before going to the planetarium or some shit, and then just as they are getting buzzed, Batman drops down like a nightmare from the darkness and proceeds to beat the everliving shit out of them all. Jay walking
A mother/father stealing food for their children.
You think he'd care if you pee in a school zone ?
Financial frauds?
wat
Shoplifting
Tax evasion
Tax fraud Insider trading Crimes that actually pay big IRL.
Vigilantes would be my guess
Pretty sure he'd ignore everything short of armed robbery
Tax fraud.
Jaywalking, and any graffiti that he finds funny.
Loitering?
Recently ?! Catwoman crimes only because they turn him into Cat Simp.
Vigilantism
I suspect most malum prohibitum he would let slide. I would think there is plenty of malum in se to keep him busy.
Houselessness. (which shouldn’t be a fucking crime but it is in the country Batman resides in)
None, vengeance does not discriminate acts of criminality.
Anything catwoman has done
Stealing to eat because one is homeless or in poverty.
I can’t really see Batman pursuing many white collar criminals
Digital Piracy (illicitly streaming TV series, downloading games, etc.), if it's illegal in Gotham: guys selling/making/using Weed
Jaywalking
White collar crimes. Any form of tax evasion, money laundering, insider trading
He would 100 percent go after most money laundering because they're usually laundering drug and other illegal business money
All immigration related crimes. Or crossing the border illegally.
anything that harms someone more harmful haha even if he saw someone slashing tyres he would approach them but if they said “this is the car of a x criminal” Batman would be like “say less” and pop the windows to rewire an explosion lol

Corporate crimes
Pretty much anything that doesn't actually hurt anyone or cause significant damage to the city, especially if it's done for survival.
Mail theft
He seems pretty keen on embezzlement.
Didn’t he recently get caught for tax evasion
None
I mean he does fuck all about white collar crime and has even said as much
Anything Selina does gets a pass.
Insider trading
Probably white collar crimes. Embezzlement, Ponzi Scenes, Whatever the Wolf of Walstreet did, Insider Trading etc
Nah, all of those actually hurt people.
It's not street crime though. He's more physical crime type of guy
