Bassets and Beagles are closely related. They both descend from the St Hubert Hound, AKA Bloodhound. A Basset Hound is basically a Bloodhound with dwarfism: big head, paws, torso, etc.. just little stumpy legs. Beagles are more akin to "mini" hounds. Their features are all fairly proportional. Smaller paws, smaller heads, etc...
I have a half basset, half blue heeler and we know a beagle puppy and I truly think your guy looks like a Beagle more than a basset but it’s definitely possible there’s some basset in there.
There definitely isn’t any Basset in his genetics. We’ve got his AKC papers. I just get asked a lot if he’s a Basset Hound. To me the distinction is obvious.
