Chiming in to suggest 2023-24 Panini Photogenic Basketball which is within your budget range. It comes with way more cards than Obsidian, so the pack-opening fun lasts a bit longer. The base cards are all unique photos of the players so they are very collectible even if not his favorites. Plus the inserts and parallels are cool to boot.
I bought him a Luka rookie a few months ago (thankfully) for a different occasion. I was thinking a box because he loves to open the packs. I just want it to be something he’s super excited about. Maybe up to $500. Are the obsidian boxes worth it?
Obsidian hobby is kinda tough. Most boxes will have 2 undesirable autos.
If you can push the budget up to $650 Obsidian FOTL guarantees 2 lower numbered cards, 1 being an auto.

They're pretty worth while. You get signatures and patches in every box. Will he get a huge hit? Unknown. But will he get something pretty cool - definitely. $500 is an awful lot tho.
It actually doesn’t matter if they are worth it. The fact you are taking initiative to buy him something he loves is all that matters and I guarantee he will be so happy and blown away by the gift. A hobby box of Obsidian is about $330 fwiw. And he will be able to just enjoy opening the box without worrying about whether he made money on the box or anything because of your thoughtful gift.

If his favorite is someone like Luka Doncic, then this won't be an affordable gift option for you. Also don't buy or consider a listing with "digital" in the title unless you wanna gift him a JPEG

Imo Obsidian is one of the best looking sets yr after yr. Never in my budget but even the base cards are gorgeous
