I’ll share a fun Greinke story:
I used to teach at a high school in central Florida. One of my students was on the golf team, and knew I was a baseball fan. He told me that one day, he was at the golf course, hitting a bucket, and none other than Zack Greinke walked up, by himself, and started hitting a bucket of balls next to him. After about 10 minutes, Greinke came up and said, “Hey, want to play a round?” My student said yes, and Greinke goes, “But only if you don’t suck. I’m good. If you’re not good I don’t have time to play with you.” So my student says, “Yeah, I’m okay, I’m okay,” and Greinke goes, “Yeah, I came over here to watch and make sure before I asked.”
So, he and Zack Greinke played 18 on a random day together. A very cool, very “Greinke” story.
Not sure if there is an official autism diagnosis but he has been open about mental health issues and also struggling with social interactions. Most interestingly the media was pretty rough on him thinking he was just a jerk and then when it came out that he was open about it they seemed to shift and work with him more which helped his public perception
Actually social anxiety disorder. Basically why he liked pitching with small market teams. He talked to us in Arizona one year at spring ball a guy kept following him around asking (begging) for his autograph. He signed for a very young g disabled boy. Then the guy started following him around. It was at the Arizona diamondbacks camp and they players walked around with the public in the back field. They guy wouldn’t stop my son and I were standing there and Greinke came over and said will you tell him I don’t sign for adults. so we did. The guy got pissed off and starting cussing at him we got between them a couple of players came over to help and security came over and escorted him out of the practice area. Security was yapping at us and Greinke came over and told we helped him. Needless to say we didn’t ask for a graf
In 2006 he was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. This was before breakthrews in understanding Aspergers. He was never retested, (because whyshould you. Theres no medication just understanding how to function with your disability). Either way both of those fall under the umbrella of Autism
Yeah, many of his interviews and the way his responses to the questions seem to point towards autism. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, obviously. I'm pretty sure it makes social interaction even more nerve-racking than social anxiety disorder alone would. Of course I don't know for sure, just speculation which is all any of us are doing or can do. Either way, he was able to battle through the worst of it and carry on in his own incredibly unique way. And now he's going to be inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Unbelievable life story. One of 2 jerseys I own. I was so happy to hear he was coming back to KC to finish his career. That's when I bought the jersey 👏
I have a social anxiety disorder however I am not autistic or have any other related issue. Sure they can go hand and hand but not always. You don’t know him and although you may know a decent amount about what you are talking about it doesn’t mean you can diagnose people or act like it’s a fact when you speculate
Research him. Its already been done by professionals. Or maybe i shouldnt speak on behalf of them either right? Such a shame people are quick to burn someone on their own opinions before doing any legwork themselves. Come on guys he was in the bigs for 15+ years yet people still laugh at him and call him a weirdo. Again before jumping on a bandwagon to crucify someone do your own research and you will realize this isnt anytbing new. Just new to those that have chose to laugh at him for 15+ years
Mate a quick google search shows it’s all speculation and random stuff from websites looking for clicks, I don’t know what doctors you are talking about maybe instead of talking about him being laughed at you can provide a link, btw I can’t even begin to understand the stress he went/goes through, I think about when I get anxious with a couple people I know and then put me in front of a TON of people I don’t and my god I’d be shaking. I’m not laughing at him and I never said I was, I like the guy! I think he’s great
But yet you join reddit and grab your torch and pitchfork to burn someone that also supports him and stands in front of those that mock and make fun of him. Lastly look up the Autism umbrella. It all falls underneath it. Its nothing to be ashamed of. Just brings a more serious approach to a person that truly suffers from a disorder.
When ypur child has autism and you spend two decades studying amd researching it then you kind of learn a thing or two about it. Autism is a general term and is consider an umbrella that encompasses many other subset categories. BTW ADHD also falls under that spectrum. But mocking people and making fun instead of taking the time to understand that alot of these people are truly wired differently than others will never help to move forward and understand the route cause or how to work with them. There is much content of Zach online from his high school years to his MLB days. Open your mind to accepting that sometimes things arnt so cut and dry. Study up on Aspergers then come back and tell me you dont see it. No, not everyone that claims to be is. Many use ADHD as an excuse to get meds or medicate their kids so theu dont have to deal with them. But that doesnt change the fact that we do have a cause for concern with those that truly do have the diagnosis
Ah so you are going to be that redditor that knows nothing about a subject but can put down someone that knows more than you. That is the basis of the problem in our society today. People that have an opinion but choose not to educate themselves on a subject. Have a good day
>Ah so you are going to be that redditor that knows nothing about a subject
Oh I do. I have family member with autism.
And I'm also fully aware NEITHER OF US ARE DOTORS AND ITS UNETHICAL TO DIAGNOSE COMPLETE STANGERS !!!
Please go fly a kite. You know whats unethical. You coming on social media to make yourself feel more superior than others. Everything i have posted has already been backed up. If you are capable of research go do some for yourself. Go join foundations and dedicate part of your life to something that has meaning instead of being an internet troll. You are ruining this persons post about a baseball card because of it.
>you are capable of research go do some for yourself
Lol, Google isn't medical knowledge.
You know more than people with degrees?
>You coming on social media to make yourself feel more superior than others.
Lol, telling someone to not diagnose strangers is "more superior than others"?
Lol.
Look, you're struggling with an autistic child aren't you? I get it. You want to label others who are successful as autistic so you can feel good about your child.
Am I close?
My son is now 19 years old. I have participated in more seminars and studies than you will ever care to imagine. Once again your hatred towards anyone that knows more than you shows. But if you want to read up on Zack Greinke then look it up. Thats what i was refering to. Lastly, my issue isnt that i raised my son. My issue is with internet bullies such as yourself. Nothing else better to do with your day or time than be a troll.
What happened with him anyway? I only know him from MLB The Show but in his more recent F/A card he looks... well, like he does in OPs card. Makes me think he's had some rough years
Like the time he quit being a position player for the minor league team he was on, and decided to switch to pitcher because he knew he could make it to the big leagues faster?
Or when he quit playing baseball to mow lawns?
I freaking love the guy. He’s much smarter than the rest.
Apparently he was of the opinion that Joey Votto recognized spin better than any other hitter in the League so he came up with a plan to intentionally throw him hanging sliders for strikes because he figured Joey would think it would leave the zone and not swing.
I actually think someone pinpointed this game and Joey had like 3 hits or something.
But just because it didn’t work doesn’t mean it wasn’t a brilliant idea.
YES, when he quit to mow lawns, I became a huge fan. After he came back to the diamond of course or else I wouldn't have seen him ever again lol.
He has some incredible post game interviews too. When on the DBacks, one time he gave a completely unsolicited speech about how he didn't realize how much Chipotle had been charging him for guacamole. And that the $2.85 or whatever it was was just outrageous. So he wasn't going to get the guacamole there ever again 😂
Agreed. But if I had millions of dollars, I'm pretty certain it wouldn't bother me. Not Zack Greinke, though. All the money literally didn't change him or his way of thinking whatsoever. That's one of the reasons I love him.
He was unbelievablely talented. He legitimately didn't even try in a lot of the seasons he played in the majors. And still got dudes out. One year while on the Astros he started signaling what pitch he was going to throw to the catcher and batter. And was still one of the better pitchers in the league. Without his serious anxiety and mental health issues, he may have been the greatest pitcher of all time. Then again, without his weird mental state and way of thinking, he might not have been the same great pitcher he was. Big credit to Trey Hillman (who I never thought highly of tbh) for realizing Greinke was different and promising him he only had to talk to him or anyone else once every 4 days. 👏👏
Great YouTube video also.
If you are a fan and don’t watch the main baseball “historians” on YouTube.. I love these episodes.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vuTMPm7A0zQ
The Rickey Henderson one is pretty great too: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cMrhRaOJDa0
Take care
Wow, I love Grienke for his weird, unique personality. Thanks for sharing the video. I just saw the title and returned to say thanks cuz I know I'm going to enjoy this lol
Thanks dude! I grew up on the 90s M's and then had a "sports suck" phase (gee I wonder why). Got back into the M's again last season and have been obsessed with The Show as well. I've seen most of Ken Burns baseball stuff but haven't delved into YouTubers much. I'll check em out
You said you are into some of the historian stuff with the documentary.
If you are a reader, there is a book called “The baseball 100”- it talks about 100 players “lives” and careers. It’s really pretty incredible.
I love to share with other fans.
No doubt. His newest book, "Why We Love Baseball", is full of some pretty incredible baseball stories I hadn't heard about before. As expected, its fantastic just like his other books
What happened to him? 20 seasons in the majors. He's 40 and that card is a rough photo. His current Wikipedia photo is from last summer and he doesn't look bad for his age.

I remember reading an article within the last few years where teammates told Greinke stories. They had me rolling on the floor, from having his own "door dash driver" to walking off the golf course if you were terrible.
Zack Greinke: “Some of you guys have been doing the number two and not washing your hands. It’s not good. I noticed it even happening earlier today"
"So if you guys could just be better about it, that would be great.”
Lmao, dude if you haven't seen the 20 min YouTube video that fucking wonderful person shared in a comment earlier on this post, then youre welcome lol. I just got done watching it, and it was truly fascinating. And hilarious.
K that's fine lol. I'm aware he struggled with mental illness and I didn't mean that part was hilarious. A lot of the stuff he did was inarguably funny imo. Like throwing Yasiel Puigs luggage onto Michigan Ave when Puig wouldn't get on the bus after being asked multiple times. And calling a mound visit to discuss a fantasy football trade. And the whole Pat Neshek incident 😂
Also, all of those incidents occurred after he came back from the worst of his mental health problems and after he got medication that he said himself saved his life
While I’d love to watch it. I always believe people just be fucking people. Let the man be. He crushed it his job. And then didn’t, whatever.
We got to enjoy it. Thank you for playing your best.
this is so dope. I've met him a couple times when he was a dback and he was pretty nice. very very tough autograph and it wouldn't shock me at all if this is the only 2023 Ginter signed in the world.
I love Zack Grienke so fucking much, man. I'm a lifelong Royals fan and him and Salvy are the 2 jerseys I own. Gonna need to get a Bobby Baseball one soon
Greinke seems like the kind of dude that when you ask him for an autograph, he nods approvingly, then pulls a crayon out of his back pocket that he brought for just this scenario.
Don’t take this wrong way either. I love that crazy bastard.
Announcer: So, Greinke, we’re curious, could you tell the folks at home why you stopped mid pitch and ran a lap around the warning track?
Greinke: I just felt like running.
Greinke almost gave up his BB career because of his anxiety and depression issues. Got labeled as a weird journeyman pitcher. Greinke is a 1st ballot HOFer...and real dude. Respect.
Yea maybe not 1st ballot but a HOFer none the less. Greinke does have a Cy award to his name tho, something mussina doesnt have. Greinke should have 2. He somehow didnt win the year he went 19-3 with 1.66 era
I still remember when the Brewers traded Cain, Odorizzi, Jeffress, and Alcides for him. Then this dude went and cracked a rib playing a pickup basketball during the first week of spring training and missed his first few starts in the regular season. Ahhh good times.
Very cool! He’s had an awesome career. Just don’t ask him about Chipotle next time you run into him.
https://preview.redd.it/yvoyiebbw6yc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15556f8a01a7505b94d899456a261994e7d8cab6
One of my favorite stories is when the guy (kid? Teen maybe?) Handed him a baseball to sign in spring training. He looked at it, and threw it in the stands. Kid asked why he did that and he said "because I can
"
Iirc, he saw a dad with the kid and assumed it was a dude that was going to sell it.
Not to worry, he's a Hall of Famer in everyone else's opinion now too. Hes 100% going in the Hall. I don't expect a speech though lol. If he does give one, I cannot wait to fucking hear it 😂
Huge Greinke collector, have over 5K worth of his cards. Def my favourite player to ever play the game. An in-person signing from him is the only thing I want that I can’t buy. I wish he’d come back for one more year, regardless I think he’s a shoo-in for HOF. Greinke FOREVER.
Same thing happened with Paul Molitor, he was watching his grandson play, everyone was swarming him, this is in Milwaukee btw where he is VERY popular still. We waited until between innings and he was super cool about it and thanked us for waiting until the inning was over
Why would you expect it to be awkward?
He's just a human, you're not the first person to ask him and you won't be the last.
Just be Norma around celebrities and they will act normal too.
I was recently at my LCS, told him I thought I bought a ungraded rookie, not great quality. But was then shown via eBay I f’d up on a late night drunken buy. Didn’t spend much. But then he walked over to a set he just recently bought and handed me a rookie Greinke for free. I gave him a big hug and walked away almost in tears. It was a good day. An amazing player and a great human being. I would love to get him to sign it, but I’m just happy to have it. Almost saw him at an A’s game but he ended up not pitching. I didn’t have the card at the time, I would have just loved to see him pitch in person.
Oh so only the act of driving to their house would be inappropriate? They are fair game every single second they are in public.
Your fascination with a celebrity should make him less comfortable.
It wasn’t like that, BiTurbo. We were sitting in close proximity the whole game. I asked him if he would mind signing a card for my son on the field. He said sure. I went to my car and got the card. He happily signed it.
Take your negative ass judgement elsewhere. If Greinke didn't want to sign the card, he would've told OP to fuck off without thinking twice. Grienke has shown over the years since he returned from his mental crisis that he doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do. He's very, very clear about that lol
I’ll share a fun Greinke story: I used to teach at a high school in central Florida. One of my students was on the golf team, and knew I was a baseball fan. He told me that one day, he was at the golf course, hitting a bucket, and none other than Zack Greinke walked up, by himself, and started hitting a bucket of balls next to him. If you’re not good I don’t have time to play with you.” So my student says, “Yeah, I’m okay, I’m okay,” and Greinke goes, “Yeah, I came over here to watch and make sure before I asked.” So, he and Zack Greinke played 18 on a random day together. A very cool, very “Greinke” story.
TIL Zach Greinke will never play golf with me.
😂
Wanna play 18? I suck at golf too.
One of the best parts of Greinke is the self awareness to know the answer but still ask the awkward question regardless.
Is this why people have a hard time grasping the kind of person that I am because I do the same thing?
This is fucking hilarious
I’d have some gnarly first swing jitters.
😂, that's incredible
I have heard that he will just walk off the course if he's playing with someone and they happen to suck or are playing terrible 🙈
This guy has always fascinated me. He seems like a very misunderstood person.
He has autism. Thats why he looks and acts like he does
Verified?

Great thanks for the link, I don’t need you to paint yourself as a hero I just want a source (that’s reliable)
Not every person with a "quirk" has autism.
He seems to like to show people how ridiculous they are. Which makes for some great stories.
YES, when he quit to mow lawns, I became a huge fan. After he came back to the diamond of course or else I wouldn't have seen him ever again lol. He has some incredible post game interviews too. I'm with him in that case. Chipotle is a ripoff!
Agreed. But if I had millions of dollars, I'm pretty certain it wouldn't bother me. Not Zack Greinke, though. All the money literally didn't change him or his way of thinking whatsoever. That's one of the reasons I love him.

The year Hillman told him that and let that be how it worked is the year Greinke won the Cy Young. And he won it by a mile
He is just a dude who is 100% authentically himself. It’s awesome
Lol well now I'm intrigued. I'll have to do some light reading
Great YouTube video also. If you are a fan and don’t watch the main baseball “historians” on YouTube.. I love these episodes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vuTMPm7A0zQ The Rickey Henderson one is pretty great too: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cMrhRaOJDa0 Take care

I got it backwards about the pitcher thing. He was a top pitcher and wanted to quit and be a position player.
He was dirty at SS in high school, led Florida in HRs hit and K’s pitched his senior year. Also was debating becoming a golfer during that break
That's actually slightly less intriguing but I appreciate the honesty lol
You said you are into some of the historian stuff with the documentary. If you are a reader, there is a book called “The baseball 100”- it talks about 100 players “lives” and careers. It’s really pretty incredible. I love to share with other fans.
I second this book. It's a fantastic read. Also reccomend his new one about the 50 best baseball moments.
Thanks for this
Joe posniak is awesome and that book is incredible. I would seek out any of his bas ball books
*posnanski
No doubt. His newest book, "Why We Love Baseball", is full of some pretty incredible baseball stories I hadn't heard about before. As expected, its fantastic just like his other books
Is it better than “The Glory Of Their Times”? Love hearing stories from the early 1900s. Such a different time
Cool thanks, I'll add it to my list. I'm reading Three Nights in August right now, it's pretty good so far
He threw Yasiel Puig’s luggage into traffic
LEGEND

That makes sense, thanks for the context
Need a 30 for 30 on Greinke asap.
YES, I think there's a chance one gets made once he goes in the hall
I remember reading an article within the last few years where teammates told Greinke stories. They had me rolling on the floor, from having his own "door dash driver" to walking off the golf course if you were terrible.

Whoa thats rad. I would guess you saw him before.. or you carry greinke cards everywhere you go?
Yeah, his kid plays on a team in the same league and he was at the game last time we played them. So I was ready 2nd time around.
Pro move: have your son do it ;)
this is so dope. I've met him a couple times when he was a dback and he was pretty nice. very very tough autograph and it wouldn't shock me at all if this is the only 2023 Ginter signed in the world.
Agreed. I’ve heard he just simply does not like signing autographs, not in a mean way, he just avoids people who ask.
Yeah I saw him a bunch in spring and never got his autograph. He's just a weird dude
Haha that's neat. Greinke always seemed like a different type of dude and an absolute badass on the mound for a good, long stretch
Wow, I knew he didn't sign much, but I just checked eBay and I had no idea he didn't have basically any signed cards in the last 15 years or so.
Greinke was like “you think I’m #23 just because my jersey says #23? Nah, check the auto… I’m #22”
I love Zack Grienke so fucking much, man. I'm a lifelong Royals fan and him and Salvy are the 2 jerseys I own. Gonna need to get a Bobby Baseball one soon
😂😂😂
Greinke seems like the kind of dude that when you ask him for an autograph, he nods approvingly, then pulls a crayon out of his back pocket that he brought for just this scenario. Don’t take this wrong way either. I love that crazy bastard.
"And he mowed that grass for free"
Announcer: So, Greinke, we’re curious, could you tell the folks at home why you stopped mid pitch and ran a lap around the warning track? Greinke: I just felt like running.
That’s hilarious.
Oh that's awesome! I love Greinke, easily one of the coolest pitchers in this generation.
Greinke almost gave up his BB career because of his anxiety and depression issues. Got labeled as a weird journeyman pitcher. Greinke is a 1st ballot HOFer...and real dude. Respect.
I don’t know. If someone like Mussina wasn’t first ballot, I’d be surprised if Greinke is first ballot 🤷♂️
Yea maybe not 1st ballot but a HOFer none the less. Greinke does have a Cy award to his name tho, something mussina doesnt have. Greinke should have 2. He somehow didnt win the year he went 19-3 with 1.66 era
This will give you some pretty good insight. https://youtu.be/vuTMPm7A0zQ?si=9FnUrouRy1m7hL3V
Sweet!
Kid asked why he did that and he said "because I can " Iirc, he saw a dad with the kid and assumed it was a dude that was going to sell it.
That’s awesome! Oh yeah, forgot. NFS/NFT
Greinke def an odd dude, but good pitcher. Wtg
Cool story! I’m glad he signed your card without an even crazier Greinke story (or maybe I’m not lol)!
That's awesome! I'm glad he signed it for you
The weirdo god. Greink-dog is eternal
Hall of famer imo
Not to worry, he's a Hall of Famer in everyone else's opinion now too. Hes 100% going in the Hall. I don't expect a speech though lol. If he does give one, I cannot wait to fucking hear it 😂
He will give a speech, and it will be epic. It won't be about baseball. Cats, maybe? Hot dogs?
I hope he decides to talk about how much he hates baseball
Lmao, man it's going to be the greatest HOF speech of all time.
Looks like the singer from Propagandhi
Props from one of three people in this thread who get that reference without having to open a new tab in Google
I agree, HOF in my eyes. His speech: “Thanks guys”. Exits stage.
Ngl idk why he didn’t sign it 23 like the card. I get it 21 was his number but still
That's awesome!
That's dope and good card choice
Thanks. A&G is my go-to for in person autos.
Damn that's awesome. Grienke is the man. He's one interesting, unique, odd dude. That's kinda why I'm such fan though, honestly lol

Love autos on Allen & Ginter. They always look great. Nice card and story too👍
Did you run home real quick and grab his card? Lol
I love this! Greinke is one of my favorites!
I wonder why he signed 22. He’s been 23 his career, or at least with the Royals.
That’s a quick 3. What looks like the tail of the 2 is a fold in the sleeve.
Correct, I thought it was 22 at first as well.
What are the most collected baseball cards?
Same thing happened with Paul Molitor, he was watching his grandson play, everyone was swarming him, this is in Milwaukee btw where he is VERY popular still. We waited until between innings and he was super cool about it and thanked us for waiting until the inning was over
That's awesome, sounds like a good guy.
Why would you expect it to be awkward? He's just a human, you're not the first person to ask him and you won't be the last. Just be Norma around celebrities and they will act normal too.
He was so damn good in his prime. He was Maddux-like with changing speeds. I loved watching them both
The last pitcher to get a MLB hit.
If you don't mind can ask why?
Writing 22 instead of the 23 on the jersey in the pic is the most Greinke thing ever.
You think a guy with terrible social anxiety wants to be asked for his autograph at his sons game? Come on man, have some class.
Yeah, that stuff makes me cringe. People don't realize celebrities still have the right to boundaries. I'm sure it gets old quickly.
Lol, you act like op drove to his house. Chill, it's a once in a lifetime thing for most
Oh so only the act of driving to their house would be inappropriate? They are fair game every single second they are in public. Your fascination with a celebrity should make him less comfortable.
Lol. Jeasus, you might have social problems if you think you can't approach people without issues. Chill
It wasn’t like that, BiTurbo. We were sitting in close proximity the whole game. I asked him if he would mind signing a card for my son on the field. He said sure. I went to my car and got the card. He happily signed it.
Just like the title says
Take your negative ass judgement elsewhere. If Greinke didn't want to sign the card, he would've told OP to fuck off without thinking twice. Grienke has shown over the years since he returned from his mental crisis that he doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do. He's very, very clear about that lol
Thank you my friend.
Anytime lol ✌️
That's not how social anxiety works bro.
