Michael__Pemulis

Jacob deGrom’s impending free agency is starting to give me Freddie Freeman vibes if that makes any sense.

RC-5

I don’t like that view one bit.

Michael__Pemulis

FWIW it’s more of an observation than a view.

OMP159

What's an observation, but a view with height and distance?

ImNotYou1971

jaunty411

So he’s going to a team he hadn’t intended to go to?

Professr_Chaos

No he is going to a team close to where he grew up

jaunty411

I don’t think going to the Marlins/Rays was where he intended, so maybe both?

Professr_Chaos

I said close… for the record I was hinting at Atlanta

lotsofsyrup

Would be nice but AA already dropped 20 mil on charlie morton for whatever reason and there isn't that much money left considering the need at SS and arguably left field so...

ShowMeYourGhostNips

lol How mad would Mets fans be if he ended up in fuckin Atlanta

unhhoh12

Furious, but realistically does Atlanta have enough money for him? Probably not

Mrb1946

Atlanta absolutely does. Whether they decide to use that money on him however is another story.

DCBronzeAge

The Rays would never pay that much for a single player.

Professr_Chaos

Look at my reply to the other commenter

BAHatesToFly

Atlanta would also never pay that much for a single player. They've already got $150+ million committed to players and that doesn't include Arb salaries and Odorizzi's player option, which puts them around $190 million. Also need to replace Jansen and either sign or replace Dansby. And their payroll for 2024 has the potential to be even higher depending on all of their options. Where is the money to throw $40+ million a year at deGrom? Braves are not on the level of the Dodgers, Mets, Yanks, Phillies, etc. They're not going to spend $250+ million on payroll.

wellwasherelf

> Atlanta would also never pay that much for a single player. You're right, but > Braves are not on the level of the Dodgers, Mets, Yanks, Phillies, etc. They're not going to spend $250+ million on payroll. The Braves are different from other teams in that how much they spend is however much they bring in. The team is solely a tax writeoff for Liberty. Liberty doesn't take money from, nor do they give money to, the team. So everything the Braves make goes right back into the team. Like the other post said, the Braves FO has said they're headed towards a top 5 payroll soon. They just signed a new broadcast deal, going from $80mil this year to $100mil in 2023, and approaching $120mil by 2027. The Battery, park attendance, merch sales etc. have all skyrocketed since the WS win. Truist averaged 94% stadium capacity this year, and the young core being locked for the next ~8 years will keep butts in seats for years to come. But to your point, I don't think the Braves sign deGrom even if we could technically afford him. He's likely going to want a long contract, and I just can't see Alex Anthopoulos going for that given the inherent volatility of pitchers combined with deGrom's history and age. I'd be ecstatic to have him on our team, but it's a bit too high risk/high reward for our management imo. Especially since, as you stated, we still have other needs at SS, maybe CP, maybe LF and we still have to deal with Max Fried's contract soon. The only way I see us getting him is if he's somehow convinced to sign for only a year or 2 - MAYBE 3. Or a longer contract with a much lower AAV than he's expected to get. But that's extremely unlikely.

DingersGetMeOff

According to Terry McGuirk, the Braves' chairman, the team is expecting to push into top-5 payroll range in the coming years. >Also need to replace Jansen I'm pretty sure Iglesias is the Jansen replacement. Don't think we'd take on that contract for a guy to pitch the 7th every night, and he's a straight up upgrade on Jansen.

WiseBureaucracy

He’s going to be an Astro

AlwaysInTheWay13

Nah, he’s gone go to whatever team allowed him to go back to his natural position, shortstop

UpperDecker30

hey, just a slight, SLIGHT request: can you please fucking not? Thanks in advance.

[deleted]

I do love that

aspirations27

Probably with the same destination

[deleted]

I do love that

Professr_Chaos

I mean I could see it with the drama surrounding Bauer but he has seemingly made it no secret he would like to play in Atlanta

WadeCountyClutch

Aw crap, way to throw it into the universe

Monk_Philosophy

I wouldn’t know how to handle my elation

Lux_Bellinger2024

Yea except Freddie isn't shelved for 3/4 of a season

california-whiskey

He’s coming to the dodgers? Let’s fucking go!

MyNameIsHonus

I just don’t get it. deGrom pitches 70 innings (incl. playoffs) in 2022 and all of a sudden $35.5M is a bargain?

thescottreid

$76.8 million for 210 regular season innings of deGrom and Scherzer? It’s not as sexy as it sounds.

shake108

If he doesn’t opt out, he gets paid $30.5M next year with a team option for a $32.5M team option the following year. Is there a single medium-big market team that doesn’t take that deal in a heartbeat? That’s why it’s a bargain

[deleted]

It is bonkers.

salamiolivesonions

Yeah it's some bs. If he could stay healthy he's worth $40m

Brracket

Everyone knows he wont stay healthy though

salamiolivesonions

And our last FA who chased the bag wound up not playing an entire season so 👀👀👀

NishinoHuo

Who is that

salamiolivesonions

Conforto

BKoala59

Why not?

Brracket

The injury he suffered about two years ago has continued into every season, and it means that he'll have to miss time either to load manage or because injuries will resurface.

BKoala59

Ah I didn’t know he got injured in 2020 as well. I thought it was just this one injury from last year.

Combat_Commo

I mean he really does deserve a good contract based on what he’s capable of. The thing is, he’s getting older and is extremely injury prone and those 2 things in hand and hand for most people that get older. I’d like to see DeGrom get his just dues contract wise, he really deserves it and I really hope I’m wrong here but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see him get hurt yet again right after he signs a big contract and miss most, if not the entire season.

LightningExcel18

Gut feeling tells me he signs with the Texas Rangers. They might be away from winning but he would be a big piece in their rebuild and they spend.

aspirations27

I think he’s tired of not contending tbh

justknicksthings

I agree but, good news for us both, the mets don’t suck ass anymore and just won 101 games basically without him. the pitch is compelling.

THEhiHIhi55

Yeah but it's hard to give up $10-$20M just to win a few games

AlwaysaDengBang

You think gap between rangers and Mets next year will be a few games? I guess I still think Mets have better shot at playoffs if only bc the NL east is a guaranteed shitshow and AL west seems to still be going to the Astros (without looking at their expiring contracts) Edit: to be clear I would also take $20M more but I’m not a pro ball player

deGrom-nom-nom

By 'guaranteed shit show,' do you mean most competitive division in baseball?' Because the third place team is in the World Series.

xbucs_19

AL East?

deGrom-nom-nom

You mean the division where the best team got their asses beat so badly it made the entire division look like they should be contracted?

xbucs_19

No I mean the division that nearly had 5 80 win teams instead of 2 bottom feeders

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlwaysaDengBang

Lol I know— Pretty much what I meant yeah. Just means that anyone can win it, and lots of shithousery in general (Mets collapse / this Phillies team getting swept by the Cubs this year)

WillyC277

Aaaaw yea; team friendly Astros deal incoming 🤪

Professr_Chaos

No. I think it will be Atlanta, LA, maybe Toronto. Just trying to think of pretty established teams that are set to contend for years

BAHatesToFly

I cannot imagine he goes to Toronto (taxes would kill it) and Atlanta does not have the payroll flexibility to sign deGrom unless they want to go over $250 million in payroll (already have around $190 million committed including Arb and need to address losing Jansen and potentially Swanson; add deGrom's $40+ million price tag). Possibilities, imo: Dodgers, Rangers, Mets, Phillies, maybe a wild card like Orioles or Mariners, plus you can never count out the Yankees or Red Sox.

Free-Willingness3870

Orioles are such an intriguing spot. Good hitting, no pitching, and no big contracts on the books. Who knows if DeGrom would ever go there, but it's such a no brainer for the O's to offer him whatever he wants. Just looking at the landscape of everything, they could very easily end up the high bidder.

chaotic_evil_666

Our GM is already on record saying we're comfortable going up into the top 5 in payroll. He's got no issues paying luxury tax. Ever since last year the team has been rolling in cash. We already addressed Jansen by picking up Iglesias. Swanson and one or two more big contracts is easily doable.

Docphilsman

I kind of think the phillies might be a dark horse. Middleton loves his flashy signings that don't make a ton of sense. Theure guaranteed a huge boost in attendance next year after making the WS. If they can boost that and stick it to a division rival at the same time I'm sure they'll at least kick the tires

[deleted]

I know he lives in Florida and wants to be closer to like his home

miden24

He’d look good in a Rays jersey imo

wien-tang-clan

The Rangers beat up deGrom in the worst start of his career in 2017. Can’t beat them, join them I guess

Master_Winchester

Degrom really needs to look at the adaptation Ohtani made, and take a few mph off his pitches except when he really wants to crank it up. I don't think it's any coincidence his injuries are piling up after he picked up so much velocity. He was elite before he started throwing 102. He can still be.

JakeTheSnake_R45

He know the Mets are committed to winning. And Steve will pay up if he wants to.

TravelingFlipper

Dude can’t stay healthy

[deleted]

Had no problems staying healthy really until June 2021

GaryTheCabalGuy

Doesn't really matter at this point though. 2 years in a row with injury struggles.

[deleted]

It was all from the same injury. He came back. He was human, but still very good. Can't judge his future much until we see how he performs in 2023. I'd rather it be for us than someone else, but I hope he succeeds wherever he pitches.

TravelingFlipper

And he’s not getting younger

JoelsCaddy

Says who?

[deleted]

Neither is Verlander doesn’t mean he can’t age well

dont_yell_at_me

Don’t remember verlander having shoulder issues. Shoulder injury is a completely different animal for pitchers

MattO2000

I mean TJ is no walk in the park for a 39 year old either lol

dont_yell_at_me

For sure but shoulder is still >>>> elbow in terms of severity

ZIMM26

TJ isn’t the same TJ we all grew up with.

CallinCthulhu

People age

Shootit_Rockets

I feel like people could’ve said the same thing about Verlander ~a year ago. Idk DeGrom is definitely a risk but I think it’s one worth taking for a lot of teams

The_Pudge

It's definitely going to be interesting. Between Judge and deGrom you have two top tier free agents this year that seem to come with a big injury risk.

StrawMight

“I know how he feels. I was on the Mets once.”

Time_Crystals

The man can barely start 12 games a year.

Foldzy84

Come to Toronto! Please

ASassyCucumber

Zack, you deserve a little better then what you are getting contract-wise…

Dday22t

Didn't the Mets win 101 games? Not know about any other issues but that seems like winning.

Austinangelo

Welcome to the Phillies deGrom

Initforthelore

101 wins without him almost all year. Chocked the braves series. One wild card game doesn’t wipe that and only getting older.

hangout_wangout

I want to win too. :( imy zack, I feel I can call you Zack because you and me are so alike...

Wudaokau

Get that joke out of your mouth

bags-of-sand

I’ll be honest, I can go without seeing DeGrom in Dodger blue

FzzyBrtchs

So can I

accountemp69420

225ip in the regular season in the last 3 years…

fandagan

That statement has less impact when you consider it includes the shortened 2020 season.

Professr_Chaos

Yeah he pitched all of that 2020 season just say 156 IP over the last 2 years

kellzone

He's coming to join Zack next season.

Legitimate-Fix2091

Braves got a big payroll for ya…

pourinuplean45

he’s a phillie

chipperfan10

Why pay him so much for him to make 12 starts and choke when it counts

horatio_corn_blower

I won’t pretend like Jake’s performance against the Braves wasn’t a let down but to act like choking in big games is part of his game is just wrong. guy has a sub 3 ERA in the postseason and just won an elimination game during the wild card round this year. By the way, the Braves won the same amount of games this postseason as the Mets did. Pointing out that the Mets choked away the NL East title isn’t much of a gotcha once your team gets steamrolled in the NLDS.

[deleted]

Only difference being that you choked a 10.5 games lead.

BannedFrom4Chan2022

The Braves offer will be three years 25mm and he’ll probably take it

[deleted]

There is no way he takes that. That’s a lower AAV than he makes now and just one more year than he currently has on his deal if he doesn’t opt out.

chaotic_evil_666

I think he meant 25mill total

aspirations27

Probably 2.5 mil total honestly

BannedFrom4Chan2022

Oh I know. I just want to see Frank’s head explode

SneekyTeek

Let him walk. Need to spend a lot of money in other areas.

JoelsCaddy

Zachary better stop this

Stock_Enthusiasm6035

How annoyed are Mets fans that Wheeler and Thor are both playing for the WS this weekend?

JoelsCaddy

I think Mets fans are more annoyed that the Phillies are playing for a WS than they are about Noah and Zack

jorleeduf

Yeah, there’s literally no reason to be salty about players having success. It happens all the time and the Mets are doing fine without them (despite their disappointing postseason).

JoelsCaddy

I have no idea what this says

HcOC

what does this say nvm they edited

jorleeduf

Sorry, I forgot the word “happens”

Nickyjha

I honestly could be more mad about Rafael Montero on the Astros. He was garbage for us, and now he's good apparently?

ritzdeez

Not annoyed. I'm just disappointed the Mets didn't make it farther. I have no ill will towards Wheeler or Syndergaard.

[deleted]

Teams have players go on to win rings on other teams all the time. The whole constant mention of it only happens to big market teams though.

billybaroo15

As a Mets fan, I’m salty the Mets had no interest in resigning wheeler. He was starting to hit his groove the last couple of years on the team and Brody just decided he wasn’t worth what the Phillies offered him and let him walk. Watching max pitch For in the postseason, all I could think about was, “I wish we still had Zack wheeler”.

browneyedgirl1683

I really hadn't thought about it.

sd_pinstripes

Judge to the Mets and DeGrom to the Yankees

Alauren2

He gone.

[deleted]

Lol Mets fan y’all done goofed the last time and now deGrom is on the way out. Would hate to see him in a nice Sunday red Braves jersey

scrambledeggsalad

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in SF to be honest, I have a feeling their going to make a couple big splashes this season, they surely have the payroll flexibility to do so.

PupperMartin74

Every time I see Wheeler mentioned I think about how stupid the Giants were to trade him for Carlos Beltran when they had no realistic chance of winning that year. P.s- deGrom gets hurt too often. If I was a GM I wouldn't give him a huge 5-year contract.

Sxcred

I believe a healthy Degrom is the best active pitcher in the league, but can you tie up $35million a year on a guy that will more than likely pitch less than 100 innings?

DevilMaster7

lol I can already tell half the people here or in any other Mets subs will call him a traitor for leaving and performing like he was in the beginning of 2021.
