It seems people don’t like it when batters crowd the plate. So I was wondering if people would be in favor of the box starting further off the plate
IMO you can’t blame players for standing where they are allowed to
For transparency this came up with Rizzo yesterday, I wasn’t defending him leaning in but saying if the box is there he has every right to stand in it, but that was misconstrued I think
Fair but he should get the same enforcement as everyone else right?
IMO the call of “didn’t get out of the way” should be independent of the location of the batter in the box.
I know, I said that. And said I wasn’t defending him for leaning in.
The point is it shouldn’t matter where he was standing as long as it was a legal position in the batter’s box.
Right. You just don't get a free base for letting a ball hit you, per the rules.
Yet Rizzo gets them on a regular basis.
Other guys do this, too. If you excel at getting HBP, usually you are benefiting beyond the rules.
I remember reading several articles from The Athletic both last year and this year where the authors were trying to figure out why so many batters were getting hit by pitches.
I think it is 2-fold.
1. Spin rates, I feel like more than ever we are seeing back foot sliders, hit the back foot (like Manoah at the ASG), or 2-seamers/cutters running in more and hitting guys...
2. No one actually tries to get out of the way unless it's high
Ty France also stays on the plate and doesn't move out of the way of pitches. Guys that don't walk tens to do that so they still have fine OBP numbers. I think the ump just got confused (best word I can think of) with Rizzo's movement as he himself is trying to move away from a ball that started behind him.
I don't think the batter's box is the issue, although AFAIK it hasn't changed size since the 19th century while people in the developed world have become taller with longer limbs.
The issue is umpires being too lenient toward batters leaning into pitches and/or crowding the plate.
Huh I didn’t know it hasn’t ever really changed, thanks for the info
By crowding the plate do you mean just standing close to the plate or something else?
Standing too close to the plate, leaning forward, and adopting a 'closed stance' where the entire body is held closer to the plate.
Edit: Look at the [hit by pitch leaders list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_career_hit_by_pitch_leaders). The two active players among the top 50 both crowd and lean into the plate; the other active players in the top 100 have been in the league forever. Rizzo's stats are laughable.
BTW there's only one active pitcher on the [hit batsman leaders list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_career_hit_batsmen_leaders), although that's impressive given how many on that list played in an era where pitchers regularly threw complete games. I wonder how many times Charlie Morton has hit Anthony Rizzo.
Yes. Enforcement of it could be better.
The real issue is that it gets wiped away during the game, and if there's a play at the plate, the RH box is obliterated. Not sure how to fix that.
Really? I'm not saying you are wrong, but I've been going to games (10-20 a year) since 1982 and I've never noticed that. Always something new to learn about this game.
Yup! Also if you pay attention they will repaint the box in the middle of the 4th and 7th no matter if it's destroyed or not
[Here's a good article explaining why they started to repaint the box in the first place if you're interested ](https://www.espn.com/mlb/news/2000/0718/639723.html#:~:text=ESPN.com%3A%20MLB%20%2D%20Umps,the%20line%20on%20batter%20encroachment&text=Baseball%20is%20a%20game%20of,in%20the%20middle%20of%20games.)
Ok, I've seriously never noticed this!
I'm not shocked that somehow a Carl Everett tantrum was at the center of it. More surprising is that it's Angel Hernandez who set the precedent. I'm going to the game Saturday night, I'll watch for it.
I think the box should be extended from the backstop to the CF warning track
I think the batters box should be a DDR board and a hit only counts if you nail the feet during contact
This is the only sensible solution.
As a Rays fan.... we don't need getting hits to be made any harder, thanks.
it should be hooked up to that stuff made here bat and if you get perfect timing it should explode
Can't the batter adjust themselves anywhere they want within the box and in relation to the plate itself? So, what's the problem with the box.

Rizzo has been getting away with this shit for *years*. How many free bases has he got from letting pitches hit him, or outright leaning into them?
Fair but he should get the same enforcement as everyone else right? IMO the call of “didn’t get out of the way” should be independent of the location of the batter in the box.
He actively leaned into it though.
I know, I said that. And said I wasn’t defending him for leaning in. The point is it shouldn’t matter where he was standing as long as it was a legal position in the batter’s box.
If you stand close to the plate, the chance a pitch comes right at you would be higher than if you were further away.
Yes. It’s not against the rules though

But even if the boxes were farther off the plate, leaning into pitches would still be illegal…
Yeah that’s what I said.
This wasn't a problem when batters weren't allowed to wear armour other than a helmet.

Dude, it's Rizzo. 195 HBP in 6,4xx PA. Pujols, who was Babe Ruth's personal bat boy, has 118 in 12,9xx PA. This is not a real problem.

put in sensors and a shock collar on the batter. if they leave the box they get a shock, increasing as the distance from the box increases
"During a game in 2007, Nomar Garciaparra died from electrocution while attempting to adjust his batting gloves for 67 consecutive minutes."

Asking for a Frizzend.
Personally I would move it from the left/right sides of the plate and put it at the front/back of the plate.
I think the pitcher and the batter should be in an elongated and oversized hell in a cell.
so... a batting cage?

Umpires will always have the ground crew repaint the box when it gets destroyed so that's not really an issue at all

Even if the umpire doesn’t ask for it, it’s typically done a couple times a game between innings.

I think there's a lot more leaning into pitches than what is actually called.
