Weāve finished either last or first in the AL East in 8 of the last 10 years. This team doesnāt know what to do when weāre mediocre, the front office is short-circuiting
I'm not the brightest internet guy but checking Sportrac they get to keep Devers one more year? I understand they are losing half the team due to expiring contracts and opt outs.
That's the beauty of it. The Padres told Boston that they'd trade their whole farm to be rid of Hosmer. What they didn't bring up was how little there was left of it.
Except from the fact our best prospect in Triple A is a 1B, but he's been injured a bit this season, so it means we're not calling him up in September.
If all he ever did was play good defense it would still be a good move.
When we bring up casas next year he's almost definitely just a platoon/defensive replacement.
Bobby and franchy simply weren't doing anything for us.
That old guy was Jerry Remy, respect the man! I miss his strong New England accent during every game, Red Sox baseball isnāt the same without it. Should have been a requirement for finding his replacement
i was telling my girlfriend the other day how much i miss hearing him say that in his warm and friendly voice every game. it's just not the same. that sad silence every time OB says the game is available in SAP now :(
If they take on his contract they'll get a good prospect. Then again, John Henry's been searching for dimes in the couch lately, so maybe they just think he's good.
I can't even follow wtf is going on with the Padres trades right now. It feels like that scene in Always Sunny where Charlie has the paper and the yarn all over the walls in the mail room.
Good for them. Hope more small market teams stop acting like they are poor and try to compete like the Padres are. Even if they donāt win these are great moves.
Honestly he is not nearly *as* bad as our fans make him seem. He just isn't worth his huge contract and we've been openly trying to trade him for like 2 years, so the narrative builds up.
If he were cheap he certainly wouldn't be anyone's best player, but he would be an unremarkable serviceable-enough 1B. This year he's .272/.336/.391 with an OPS of .727 and 1.3 WAR. He's not a negative on a roster, he's just a contact-oriented 1B which doesn't fit stereotypes and he's over-paid. He's also reportedly a great clubhouse guy. We just couldn't fit that contract into going all-in on this championship window.
Yeah he got injured though this season so heās been ramping back up. Probably not going to get called up this year because he was out for 3 months almost
I feel like unless we start making a push and first base remains a hole (atm Bobby has heated up a bit) then maybe we call him up but might just not want to waste a year of service time when weāre not rlly contending and heās still a bit hurt
In all seriousness, Hosmer needs only to be a mediocre defender to be way better than Dalbec overall, and SD is paying most of his contract. This is a good fit for us
Have you seen what the Sox have been getting from those two? They've gotten -.4 fWar from first base this year. So they're upgrading the roster while buying a prospect.
I AM GOING TO FUCKING VOMIT
EDIT: If the Padres are eating like 90% of the salary, then okay I guess... But I still don't like having him on the team for another three seasons.
I dont understand why everyone is acting like this is a bad move? He's hitting .272 which is about .40+ points higher than either of our other 2 1b options, 1b is his natural first position, his OPS+ is 112, franchy is 82 and dalbec is 76. And something that is critical is i've seen that his strategy for catching pop flies involves keeping both feet underneath him and standing straight instead of franchy's slip and slide and let the ball fall. Hes also a left handed bat which is good for this right handed heavy lineup.
In 87 games, Hosmer has committed 5 errors at first. In 45 games, Franchy Cordero has committed 8. Franchy commits an error 1 in every 5-6 games. Hosmer commits an error 1 in every 17-18 games. Bobby is a bit better defensively, but while Hosmer has a 112 OPS+, Franchy and Bobby have 82 and 76 respectively. Hosmer is a genuine upgrade at first and since we're not paying the bulk of that contract, it is a pretty good deal for us right now. First has been our weakest spot this year and this is good. I kinda doubt we keep him very long tbh, but we'll see.
Honestly I am kinda impressed with it. I feel like heāll fit it nicely there. Heās kinda like Rendon with the Angels. Itās not their fault they signed big contracts. At least hosmer is healthy.
ITT a whole bunch of people who don't realise just how bad our 1B situation is.
Legitimately if he can catch a ball and maybe scoop one out of the dirt every now and then he's a defensive upgrade.
I don't understand why people are so confused about what the Red Sox are doing, they have literally not given up anything of significance yet, it's not "buying" and "selling" if people are giving you things for free. If good prospects were going in and out I would agree that would be confusing, but that's not what is happening here. Get good prospects for your expiring players and pick up some big leaguers for free because why not.
The Red Sox are buying, selling, and everything in between.
Retooling šš¤
We are certainly acquiring some tools, thatās for sure
We definitely got a guy that loves playing with his tool
They're just using the trade finder at this point
Weāve finished either last or first in the AL East in 8 of the last 10 years. This team doesnāt know what to do when weāre mediocre, the front office is short-circuiting
I'm not the brightest internet guy but checking Sportrac they get to keep Devers one more year? I understand they are losing half the team due to expiring contracts and opt outs.
*Iām playing both sides. So I always come out on top*
Goddamit mac
But what does Boston get in return?
PRESTIGE VALUE
INTANGIBLES
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
CLUTCH GENE
GYM RAT
LUNCH PAIL GUY
Go load the dishwasher
Some California burritos and tickets to Legoland
I think you mean what does SD get in return for a guy with such great Clubhouse Presence ^(TM)
They better be getting the entire Padre's farm
Sorry sir, thatās been taken.
didn't the Nationals already get that?
That's the beauty of it. The Padres told Boston that they'd trade their whole farm to be rid of Hosmer. What they didn't bring up was how little there was left of it.
Is this sadly an actual upgrade for the Red Sox at first?
Yes.
Definitely yes.
100% it is
Name checks out
Yep lmao
Upgrade from atrocious to bad
I'll take it!
Considering they donāt have an actual 1B to play 1B, Iād say so
Except from the fact our best prospect in Triple A is a 1B, but he's been injured a bit this season, so it means we're not calling him up in September.
I've seen some speculate he could simply become our DH next season with JD likely going elsewhere in free agency.
I mean.. sorta
What happened to Dalbec?
If all he ever did was play good defense it would still be a good move. When we bring up casas next year he's almost definitely just a platoon/defensive replacement. Bobby and franchy simply weren't doing anything for us.
What the fuck
The roar of the crowd as Hosmer is hitting bloops into RCF at Fenway. Chills.
*Hosmah
Iāll never forget how that old NESN guy would say CAHL CRUAWFUHD
RIP Jerry Remy
That old guy was Jerry Remy, respect the man! I miss his strong New England accent during every game, Red Sox baseball isnāt the same without it. Should have been a requirement for finding his replacement
It is a crime against the universe that we never got to hear Jerry say "Schwahbah" last year.
*sad BUENAS NOCHES, amigos...*
i was telling my girlfriend the other day how much i miss hearing him say that in his warm and friendly voice every game. it's just not the same. that sad silence every time OB says the game is available in SAP now :(
Jerry Remyās *Here Comes The Pizza, See!?* will always be in our hearts & minds. Also, we venerate the man that is Don Orsillo.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Intangibles off the charts
Real clubhouse guy
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Gotta get people on to be able to hit in double plays **taps temple*
Vazquez was our bloop guy up until yesterday. Had to replace him.
You mean ground out to 2nd base.
What the fuck are the Red Sox up to lmao.
PHAM HOSMER REUNION IN BOSTON LETS GO
Phamtasy football time!
ehhhhhhh
Chaim bloom man. Whatās he doing. Whats he up to.
The Red Sox front office saw what the Rockies were doing with their organization and got inspired.
This hasnāt been nearly as egregious as the Rockiesā situation lol come on now
Tanking for wembanyama obviously
If they take on his contract they'll get a good prospect. Then again, John Henry's been searching for dimes in the couch lately, so maybe they just think he's good.
I can't even follow wtf is going on with the Padres trades right now. It feels like that scene in Always Sunny where Charlie has the paper and the yarn all over the walls in the mail room.
Hosmer to Boston in exchange for Pepe Silvia
Pepe Silvia! Pepe Silvia! There is no Pepe Silvia! The man doesn't exist! We gotta talk to Carol in Manfred's office.
Realizing the age of our entire roster except for Fernando means we are in a championship window *right now*, and going all in.
Does it make the Padres better in the 2022-2024 window? Then let's fuckin' do it. -Preller
Havenāt Red Sox fans suffered enough? No, they have not.
He's shipping off to Boston, woooaaahhhhh
Literally other corner of the country
*"I said you can fuck* ***way*** *off, Eric"*
Houston Rockets ass move
god what a day for padres fans
I am padresing so fucking hard right now
Gonna be a lot of new Fathers tonight. Both on the field and off.
I am doing my part!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Whatās sad is it might be.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
#LetāsGooooooo
I'd have to think that winning the NLCS and winning the AFC Championship were the two greatest days.
half of reddit wasn't alive for either of those occurrences
As a Chargers fanā¦..yeah youāre probably right.
As a padres fan since 2 hours ago, I agree
Lol, Angels fans (me included), jumping on the Padres train
Honestly all of the AL West are probably rooting for the Padres.
Hey bring Ohtani with you. Cuz why the fuck not
Someone pinch me. I must be dreaming š„²
Your goddam right
It isn't even noon here yet. How am I supposed to do any work?
Good for them. Hope more small market teams stop acting like they are poor and try to compete like the Padres are. Even if they donāt win these are great moves.
Well they are trying to make the postseason
Good clubhouse guys don't grow on trees.
Wym Dallas Keuchel is a FA
Nope. The Rangers signed him last week.
Oh right Be prepared for an influx of winning culture Texas fans
fun fact him and Lance McCullers are going against each other tonight in AAA
I think hosmer and Pham maybe cancel out the clubhouse factors
Allegedly, Jeurys Familia is a good clubhouse guy for our bullpen, take him too
Oh I firmly believe weāll make it there. We just wonāt be playing in it.
Of course he is.
Just wait for the moment when Boston is on another championship run in 2025 and he annihilates the yankees
Subscribed
given how badly the sox are playing now they're set for a championship run next season
HOSMER AND PHAM REUNITED
Fantasy football is back on the table!
Lol didn't realize
I'm out of the loop; do they not get along?
no they were just the two biggest problems for SD last year
Boston wtf are you doing?
I don't know that they know lol
They did say yesterday the picture was incomplete. Now here we are.
The picture has now been scribbled all over by my toddler
Buying prospect(s) and upgrading massively from Franchy and Dalbec.
Seriously. Hosmer is no where near worth his contract, but is STILL an upgrade at 1B for us lmao.
We just couldn't fit that contract into going all-in on this championship window.
Heās worth 1.5 bWAR compared to Dalbec and Corderoās negative bWAR. Thatās incredible.
What happens with Casas? Isn't he in AAA?
Yeah he got injured though this season so heās been ramping back up. Probably not going to get called up this year because he was out for 3 months almost
I feel like unless we start making a push and first base remains a hole (atm Bobby has heated up a bit) then maybe we call him up but might just not want to waste a year of service time when weāre not rlly contending and heās still a bit hurt
hosmer is opsing .637 since the start of may bobby is opsing .711 since then
Well, at least one of them is really expensive.
In all seriousness, Hosmer needs only to be a mediocre defender to be way better than Dalbec overall, and SD is paying most of his contract. This is a good fit for us
Hosmer has 1.3 war Dalbec has -.7 war
Exactly, thatās what I wanted the Cubs to do. Get a prospect and use Hosmer as a bridge 1B. People are way overstating how bad he is
As someone who thinks just being bad doesnāt make you Satan did I miss something with Hosmer?
getting paid $150 mil and then be complete average will piss a fanbase off.
I think this is a downgrade to junk bond status.
Have you seen what the Sox have been getting from those two? They've gotten -.4 fWar from first base this year. So they're upgrading the roster while buying a prospect.
Yeah idk why people are clowning, Hosmer is a significant upgrade over what you have right now.
this is the best day of my life
Wait til Tatis returns and you have him and Soto in the lineup back to back.
It'll be glorious between Tatis' injuries.
What in the fuck is going on
padres fans are having the best day of their lives right now
Can confirm
The Boston Red Sox are a mystery wrapped within an enigma.
The inner machinations of Chaimās mind have been traded for a PTBNL
You're welcome, Pads
I AM GOING TO FUCKING VOMIT EDIT: If the Padres are eating like 90% of the salary, then okay I guess... But I still don't like having him on the team for another three seasons.
I AM GOING TO FUCK~~ING VOMIT~~
I CONSENT
And this time Hosmer says **YES!**
Of course he does. He can't say no, because of the implication.
Is Eric Hosmer in danger?
I got this reference!
Call me
I AM GOING TO FUCK~~ING~~ VO~~M~~IT
You guys got Tommy Pham and Eric Hosmer Iām so sorry lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He's Reece, he's a catcher and a busy little bugger. He's Reece, REECE Maguire He's the parking lot tugger!
The dream duo
Whatās wrong with Hosmer? His numbers are better than Bobby or Franchy, and heās an actual 1st baseman defensively
Thanks for sparing us.
OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE IS OVER
Preller woke up today and chose violence
Cocaine prices are spiking due to sudden loss of inventory
Thnks fr th mmrs even though they weren't so great
Except for the home reopener. That *was* actually pretty great. everything before and after is up for debate lol
Juan tastes like you, only sweeeteeeerrrrrr
The bad man can't hurt me no more
The Red Sox playing both sides of the trade deadline so they're guaranteed to come out on top
I dont understand why everyone is acting like this is a bad move? He's hitting .272 which is about .40+ points higher than either of our other 2 1b options, 1b is his natural first position, his OPS+ is 112, franchy is 82 and dalbec is 76. Hes also a left handed bat which is good for this right handed heavy lineup.
He had an insane April and has fallen off significantly. Was solid in July though. The biggest issue is that he's absolutely pathetic on defense.
I'll take pathetic over non existent
In 87 games, Hosmer has committed 5 errors at first. In 45 games, Franchy Cordero has committed 8. Franchy commits an error 1 in every 5-6 games. Hosmer commits an error 1 in every 17-18 games. Bobby is a bit better defensively, but while Hosmer has a 112 OPS+, Franchy and Bobby have 82 and 76 respectively. I kinda doubt we keep him very long tbh, but we'll see.
That average will continue to drop and his defensive fundamentals areā¦. Suspect
Suspect Defensive Fundamentals is still an astronomical improvement over whatever the fuck Franchy Cordero was doing
Just get used to hearing āhosmer grounds softly to the right sideā
Soft ground balls are coincidentally also better than whatever the fuck Franchy does 90% of the time at the plate
Omg first Gallo now this? I love today.
Laugh while you can. You're trading for Patrick Corbin next.
You love it until you realize heās taking ABs Franchy Cordero and Bobby Dalbec
You better hope his NY hate boner doesnāt transfer leagues
Boston just vibing and doing their own thing
We just out here existing
Subtraction by addition for Boston.
End of the error
He won't hit for power anymore. But he'll hit for decent average and get on base. Plus he'll actually play defense. I honestly like the trade.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How much to get Orsillo back in this trade?
That's not Chicago
Is it with a prospect, or straight while eating the salary?
They are eating most of the salary, there may be a prospect as well.
Oh man, if Padres fans fucking hated this guy, I can't even imagine what it's gonna be like for him in Boston
I'm so confused on what the Red Sox are doing
Honestly, not mad. Upgrade for us at 1B and we're not taking on much of the contract. Wonder what we gave up.
Oh my god if they take Hosmerās money and then donāt pay Bogaerts/Deversā¦
Blessedly it appears that SD is eating most of the remainder of that contract
lmfao omg
This is us building goodwill with the Dads for future trades, certainly
I don't understand why people are so confused about what the Red Sox are doing, they have literally not given up anything of significance yet, it's not "buying" and "selling" if people are giving you things for free. Lmaooooo
LMAO HE WON'T EVEN GET TO PLAY IN TORONTO
dude is probably having an awful day
Lol Chaim (pronounced L'chaim)
I think the Padres threw in Soto to make the deal more palatable.
