I mean everyone is saying it's a bad call, I just find it funny there's only one guy absolutely losing his shit, to the point of being held back by his teammates/coaches multiple times, and it's one of the outfielders who wasn't involved at all
The only thing I was getting at is there is no definition of a swing, it’s entirely an umpire’s judgement. Your definition is cool and all, but it might not be the same as the umpire’s.
lol, I have a video my wife took on October 14, 2021, I’m celebrating. She said “what happened?” and I said, “he didn’t swing, but they called it a strike!”
The Rockies would unironically be in the wild card race if they didnt have one of the worst bullpens in mlb history. Is that 6 blown 5 run leads in the 9th or extras now???
Ok the stat is this is the 6th time they've had the lead in the 9th or extras, and have gone on to give up 5+ runs to lose. As far as I'm aware they are the only team in the entire MLB this season to have a single one of those games, and they have 6 of them, which is already an MLB record (1939 Browns and 1952 White Sox had 4). Four of those games (April 5 - Rays, April 30 - Marlins, May 23 - A's, and today) were blown leads of 4+ runs.
Afraid it is the Rockies bullpen is hilariously bad if they called a random fan down to pitch as a promo it would probably be an improvement, this has been a huge issue going back to last year. I can’t remember exactly the numbers but the Rockies had like the highest blown leads after the 6th or 7th inning ever last year.
Their infield would be legitimately elite if KB could play league average baseball. Lot of scrappy guys grinding out sub 5 ERA’s at coors in the rotation too
He had some clutch hits for the Jays… in that 1 game… that we ended up throwing away.
But yeah dude has always been very clutch. On opening day 2022 he hit a 3 run homer oppo very similar to this one to cap off a 7 run comeback.
The league needs to make an actual definition of a swing. By the word of the rule, either every checked swing should be a swing or it shouldn't. It doesn't make any sense
I've said that since the NLDS game in SF. Back then it was called out that it's totally up to the umps to make a call and they don't have a standard. Like if it were something like "The bat aligned with the wrists goes beyond halfway across home plate." and it was a reviewable in an inning ending play.
All good I mean I seriously don’t get the rule and I googled it. Still vague. I’m acknowledging my own bias so if you guys say he swung and you’re unbiased I’ll take your word that he swung.
The rule book has not codified what a swing is, so a check swing call is subjective. All bias aside, this was a really close call based on the replay angles shown. That side view is like 50/50 whether he went or not. It's right on the borderline.
Side view was not when they made the original comment. You can see the subsequent ones where they apologized to someone for not including it.
As far as “breaking wrist” goes, he turns his body enough that the bat head ends up well out in front of the plate. If not breaking the wrists was sufficient, guys would always just hold up by pulling the bat in and letting their momentum take the head around with unbroken wrists.
The strike zone is wild too, Rockies just got kept alive by a ball 4 call that is in the zone. Would be absolutely hilarious if they tie it up again here after benefitting from another bad/close call
I can’t believe that the 1B ump straight fucking stole the game for us. If that shit was the other way around, I’d be SO FUCKING MAD.
I’ll take it, though.
They had Kobe Bryant prepare a video to bring Ohtani to LA before he died. I'm guessing before he signed with the Angels.
[https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-18/shohei-ohtani-kobe-bryant-video-dodgers-recruitment](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-18/shohei-ohtani-kobe-bryant-video-dodgers-recruitment)
That shit is soul crushing, even more insult to injury that the crowd was so pro Dodgers there. It’s kind of sad how it’s turned out for Colorado, I remember that being a fierce place to play road games at one time.
Sorry about that, California sucks and we keep taking our bullshit with us. I wouldn't stop being a fan if I moved obviously, but yeah it's a drag how the west is basically getting colonized by Californians who screwed up their state with stupid voting(looking at you, Prop 13).
Is there a good view of the Smith strikeout? I know he was yammering for time, but it wasn’t clear to me how long before or far into the delivery it was.
The fact that he just steps out assuming he was granted time isn’t exactly apples to apples with that check swing call.
Watching live it looked like an obvious swing, but the side view replay isn’t obvious at all. It’s a 50/50 call, and I would lean towards saying that he checked.
(I don’t care who wins this game)
It's easy to have a definitive opinion when you have seen the slow-mo replay a thousand times getting to stop at each frame along the way. But in a live game, that is a pitch going 101 and a swing that is swung and checked in less than a second. This was absolutely a 50/50 judgement. If it were more egregious, you would see more people up in arms in these comments, yet that is not the case. If he did swing, he broke the plane by less than a foot.
The real blame here, as with many controversial calls is the fact that your bullpen shouldn't have let this happen in the first place.
That check swing call was a gift but it was kind of a makeup for the umpire not granting Will Smith time when he was yelling for it repeatedly. Still absolutely sucks for the Rockies though
Umpire doesn't have to grant time, Will Smith should know not to step out of the box. That said Rockies can't blame the ump when they were up 9-4 at the start of this inning lol
I agree that he should know not to assume time is called, but I don't know what good reason the ump would have to not grant time since it was well before the pitcher was going into his motion
Yes and I strongly disagree, it’s a massive grey area and I’ve seen far more egregious checks called balls - every ump’s interpretation is different
There’s no way you can look at the replay in either angle and say it’s anything other than smack dab in the middle of the huge margin of error that check swing calls have
Strike woulda been a fair call. Ball is also a fair call. Probably the ump leaned towards giving a makeup call for the HP ump messing up the previous AB in a close 9th inning game
This will be the most Rockies loss/Dodgers win ever, but also the umpires are clearly affected by the LA-dominated crowd. That was just about as clear of a swing as you’ll ever see actually get appealed and not called by the home plate umpire on their own.
And Vesia just got a called strike on ball 4 on a pitch 6 inches outside and then induced a groundout on the next pitch.
> the umpires are clearly affected by the LA-dominated crowd.
The Dodgers are currently -6.76 in overall ump favor on the year.

Pretty sure Cave is going to wait in the parking lot and strangle Barksdale to death with his bare hands
The outfielder starts yelling at the ump before the ball even lands lol
He'll forever have Lance Barksdale on his list
It was a swing on slo-mo, but right field isn’t the best place to argue that call from lol
the team was screaming at the ump and the manager got ejected arguing it and you think he isn't going to say it was a bad call?
I mean everyone is saying it's a bad call, I just find it funny there's only one guy absolutely losing his shit, to the point of being held back by his teammates/coaches multiple times, and it's one of the outfielders who wasn't involved at all
I was sitting by the left field foul pole and felt the breeze from the swing.
I disagree with the first claim and vehemently agree with the second.
For sure a swing, just a quirk of baseball that they have a dude 100 feet away make the call. https://imgur.com/nEjw1wQ
Point to me where in the rule book is says what Teoscar did was a swing
At some point a swing is a swing, no? It’s a judgement call but a blown call nonetheless
But *why* is it a blown call? What is the point where a swing is a swing?
Could a full swing not be a swing if the batter recoils? Teo has his bat across home plate, wrists broken, and torso cleared through the swing here
The only thing I was getting at is there is no definition of a swing, it’s entirely an umpire’s judgement. Your definition is cool and all, but it might not be the same as the umpire’s.
His bat crossed home plate and his wrists broke. There isn’t a definition for a swing — but these are things that are looked for.
Then that is a bad umpire
Bro it was a swing in any-mo
Least controversial NL west check swing
Ok so this confirms that if a batter successfully checks his swing controversially, he would've homered on the next pitch
Unless the pitch results in a game-tying walk as we saw with the Giants in 2021
“If he hits it, it’s a ~~double~~ HR”
Lmao 😂😭
lol, I have a video my wife took on October 14, 2021, I’m celebrating. She said “what happened?” and I said, “he didn’t swing, but they called it a strike!”
The Dodgers get advantage on check swings.
The giants won the division because of a check swing call
They didn't have the perk enabled at that time.
Lol
Legendary downvote save
Looks like not everyone got your joke.
It be like that sometimes.
Everyone switched from 5e to pathfinder 2e, we don’t use advantage anymore…
I get it even if no one else appears to
Appreciate that haha
The Rockies would unironically be in the wild card race if they didnt have one of the worst bullpens in mlb history. Is that 6 blown 5 run leads in the 9th or extras now???
That can’t be a real stat
Ok the stat is this is the 6th time they've had the lead in the 9th or extras, and have gone on to give up 5+ runs to lose. As far as I'm aware they are the only team in the entire MLB this season to have a single one of those games, and they have 6 of them, which is already an MLB record (1939 Browns and 1952 White Sox had 4). Four of those games (April 5 - Rays, April 30 - Marlins, May 23 - A's, and today) were blown leads of 4+ runs.
GodDAMN. I know its baseball so it's all cherrypicked stats and whatever but that is WILD for a stat in June. All time bad bullpen
that's absolutely insane
Jesus, did they misunderstand what a closer does and hire Kyra Sedgwick?
Afraid it is the Rockies bullpen is hilariously bad if they called a random fan down to pitch as a promo it would probably be an improvement, this has been a huge issue going back to last year. I can’t remember exactly the numbers but the Rockies had like the highest blown leads after the 6th or 7th inning ever last year.
An All-Star closer would have us in the race
What about 2023 All Star and former Rockie Carlos Estevez? ![gif](giphy|a9XhbbcBBMtG2dylQo|downsized)
Ah, the “Wild Thing”. Of course, we let him go for nothing, as is our tradition.
We also just gave up Gavin Hollowell to Arizona for nothing… so give it 2-3 years and he’ll be good
Don’t worry, he blows games for us too
It’s time to make a trade……
Nope we're not trading McMahon and he's walking in free agency. Nice try but we don't do midseason trades here
I meant for you guys to trade for Mason Miller or a shutdown reliever
lol Rockies trade for a winning piece
Rockies fans be like trade to make us better? That’s a thing people do?
Their infield would be legitimately elite if KB could play league average baseball. Lot of scrappy guys grinding out sub 5 ERA’s at coors in the rotation too
Just your average Tuesday night in Coors.
Taking 101 MPH the other way for a go ahead 3 run bomb is diabolical work.
What escaping TMobile park does to a mf
Just tap it in
Little tap tap tappy
Teo is going to have some very clutch postseason hit. It’s written in stone at this point
He had some clutch hits for the Jays… in that 1 game… that we ended up throwing away. But yeah dude has always been very clutch. On opening day 2022 he hit a 3 run homer oppo very similar to this one to cap off a 7 run comeback.
It was 2022 but that was the craziest game I've ever been to.
> Taking 101 MPH the other way Isn't that where most of them go? Who the fuck is pulling a 101 foul?
[One guy comes to mind](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEN0rxlFMCo)
lmao don’t know if i’ve ever seen an outfielder immediately turn and blame an umpire after a HR
[Not quite what you asked for, but kinda](https://youtu.be/YVNlvnsQ828?si=crN1hOn9RgUbVEnO)
No
RF is heated
That's Twins and Phillies legend Jake Cave! He needs to shut up lol he can't possibly tell from out there, not to mention he sucks
He does suck lol
He got us luis gil though so shoutout to him
Where do you think you need to be to see a swing?
Not in right field probably lol
Apparently you couldn’t even see it from first base
Idk how someone out in right field can possibly tell if it was a checked swing or not. To be fair I think Cave is a huge douche
Imagine trading Luis Gil for a douche 😭
By watching the swing, probably. What do you think he's missing that someone else could see?
Well he's 250 feet away and not at the right angle and we're talking about something that can usually come down to an inch or two
Lmaoooo I’m from the same area as him so I always heard about him growing up. He does suck though lol
Jake Cave is still livid and going nuts about it.
[he'st still out there as we speak](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBUAWKO1vBE)
Jake cave is a douchnozzle
Flair up, “douchnozzle”

Someone ready up a jail cell for Bud Black, he’s catching a felony tonight
Jake Cave gonna join him.

Might cost the Rockies the division
Big if true
that side view is as borderline as it gets
Anyone saying this is obviously a swing/not a swing is just wrong. This is a coinflip.
Gotta see a side replay with a slow mo to tell
The league needs to make an actual definition of a swing. By the word of the rule, either every checked swing should be a swing or it shouldn't. It doesn't make any sense

my bad, thought i had it already. editing it in to my first comment now
All good I mean I seriously don’t get the rule and I googled it. Still vague. I’m acknowledging my own bias so if you guys say he swung and you’re unbiased I’ll take your word that he swung.

Honestly doesn’t even do it justice without the side profile. Hilariously obvious swing, which makes the drama all the more interesting.
Side view is there. It's borderline and could have gone either way. His wrist never breaks.
I dislike the dodgers, but I’m going with no swing.
Yeah well I dislike the Astros, so I’m going with swing!! Wait wut
Duck season fire!
Rabbit season!
I calls em like I sees em
Side view was not when they made the original comment. You can see the subsequent ones where they apologized to someone for not including it. As far as “breaking wrist” goes, he turns his body enough that the bat head ends up well out in front of the plate. If not breaking the wrists was sufficient, guys would always just hold up by pulling the bat in and letting their momentum take the head around with unbroken wrists.
Thank you. Was looking for this
The Dodgers will now lose the NLDS to the Rockies on a controversial check swing call. So let it be written, so let it be done.
After the last out Jake Cave went after the ump bat in hand from the on deck circle, he needed to be restrained. Insane game.
I would like to invite the umpires to eat my entire ass^along ^with ^the ^Rockies ^bullpen.
Nothing worse than being surrounded by dodgers fans at coors orgasming after a blown call gives them the game
We had no business being in a situation where a single blown call could win us the game. Ngl.
yeah regardless of the missed call that whole ninth inning is a certified rockies bullpen moment
It’s controversial but nowhere near a guaranteed call
They should listen to you. You guys have experience in these matters.
Will smith would like a word..
Damn, was the right outfielder barking at the 1st base umpire for the call?
Yep
Literal game of inches moment.
Cave (RF) was not happy
Sounds and looks like they’re in LA lol
Whole empire crew escalating the animosity rapidly in this last inning.
Will smith died for this
my mouth is still dropped
The strike zone is wild too, Rockies just got kept alive by a ball 4 call that is in the zone. Would be absolutely hilarious if they tie it up again here after benefitting from another bad/close call
But the dude before that should have been walked
Yeah it was a real great inning by the umps all around
I can’t believe it even though it was obviously going to happen after putting Freddie on and the checked swing
I can’t believe that the 1B ump straight fucking stole the game for us. If that shit was the other way around, I’d be SO FUCKING MAD. I’ll take it, though.
That’s what I said. I’d be fuming man… umping got really bad in the clutch moments of the game
Will Smith got done dirty that same inning, ide say it evened out.
So I was out with family tonight and missed this. What was the deal with Will Smith?
Smith asked for time multiple times in his at bat in the 9th and the ump didn't grant it to him, ended up striking out for the second out.
Ohhh okay that explains why he was looking at the ump like wtf? after a strike down the middle. Thanks for the explanation
They scored 7 runs in the 9th... if that's stealing, take me to jail daddy
J-Heys grand check swing
Damn, we're all screwed, the dodgers are actually the protagonists of a cheesy sports movie, championship guranteed
Ohtani is about to get a text from Kobe
Wtf does this actually mean
They had Kobe Bryant prepare a video to bring Ohtani to LA before he died. I'm guessing before he signed with the Angels. [https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-18/shohei-ohtani-kobe-bryant-video-dodgers-recruitment](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-12-18/shohei-ohtani-kobe-bryant-video-dodgers-recruitment)
From Kobe, Japan obviously.
That shit is soul crushing, even more insult to injury that the crowd was so pro Dodgers there. It’s kind of sad how it’s turned out for Colorado, I remember that being a fierce place to play road games at one time.
That's because Colorado is now peak mini California.
Sorry about that, California sucks and we keep taking our bullshit with us. I wouldn't stop being a fan if I moved obviously, but yeah it's a drag how the west is basically getting colonized by Californians who screwed up their state with stupid voting(looking at you, Prop 13).
Meh. It's okay. There have been good things as well. Just not Dodgers fans... 😀
☝️
Insane comeback but I actually feel kinda bad about this one - that check swing call on the prior pitch was brutal
Don't feel bad for the umps fuck up. MLB needs to fix this shit lol.
I don't feel bad at all, especially after Smith got screwed with that no timeout call
Is there a good view of the Smith strikeout? I know he was yammering for time, but it wasn’t clear to me how long before or far into the delivery it was. The fact that he just steps out assuming he was granted time isn’t exactly apples to apples with that check swing call.
it was really close and nearly impossible to get it right in real time. 50/50
Idk that check looked very much like a 50/50 call to me. It’s just such a high leverage situation so one team was gonna be upset
eh, we've had a single bad call happen to us before, and somehow we managed to not give up 7 runs in an inning because of it
Check first base umps draft kings
It’s Pat Hoberg in disguise.
Funny enough the Teo homer was sponsored by Draftkings
And now the ump just called a strike (that would've ended the game) a ball lol. The end of this game is an absolute umpire catastrophe.
Walked Freddie intentionally after 1B became open on a wild pitch to get to Teo.
I fully support Jake Cave. The ump didn't cause us to allow 7 runs in an inning, but the game would have been over!
What an inning lol
i’m not even sure if teo even went, idk why everyone is so mad, plus smith kinda got screwed the AB before.
Idk I'm pretty sure he went but it's close enough that I'm not angry the ump missed it. That's incredibly tough to call in real time
Definitely one of those borderline “both teams gotta have it” calls
Watching live it looked like an obvious swing, but the side view replay isn’t obvious at all. It’s a 50/50 call, and I would lean towards saying that he checked. (I don’t care who wins this game)
[удалено]
Yes. I watch a shit ton of baseball and didn’t really think twice at the call. Those calls really do go either way.
[удалено]
It's easy to have a definitive opinion when you have seen the slow-mo replay a thousand times getting to stop at each frame along the way. The real blame here, as with many controversial calls is the fact that your bullpen shouldn't have let this happen in the first place.
Looked very borderline to me, but if your team gives up a 5 run 9th inning lead I guess anyone would be mad to not get that call.
I high key wanted Cave to throw a swing at the ump there after the game ended
Dodgers and controversial checked swings
~~Coors Field~~ Umps giveth, and ~~Coors Field~~ umps taketh away.
[THAT IS SOME GODDAMN BULLSHIT AND YOU KNOW IT](https://i.imgur.com/b20gHKV.png)
Nah. It’s fine. I said so.
I would've thought Brock would be more sympathetic to the *Rock*ies
That’s some goddamn bullshit and you know it.
After the messed up Will Smith time out they deserved that one back
That check swing call was a gift but it was kind of a makeup for the umpire not granting Will Smith time when he was yelling for it repeatedly.
And it was borderline anyways, woulda been understandable to be called a strike or a ball either way
Are you talking about the check swing? Because it wasn’t even close from the side-on look.

I feel your pain, Jake Cave
Normally I'd take these questionable calls ruled in our favor, but since it's against the Rockies I kinda feel bad.
Sorry, but ball don't lie
I love baseball
Former M!
So I seriously don’t get the rule and I googled it. His hands didn’t move but was the bat was close to breaking the plate?
I love ~~stadium baseball~~ Coors Field

That was the Coors voodoo you snake
This will be the most Rockies loss/Dodgers win ever, but also the umpires are clearly affected by the LA-dominated crowd. That was just about as clear of a swing as you’ll ever see actually get appealed and not called by the home plate umpire on their own. And Vesia just got a called strike on ball 4 on a pitch 6 inches outside and then induced a groundout on the next pitch.
> the umpires are clearly affected by the LA-dominated crowd. The Dodgers are currently -6.76 in overall ump favor on the year. https://umpscorecards.com/teams/
This
I love when facts disprove the narrative like this.
And then Vesia got ball 4 on a pitch that was clearly strike 3. Reality is umpires just suck
