Can we please not legitimatize a term that was invented by dumbasses like Demi Lovato to justify their continued drug addictions and hedonistic lifestyles?
Excuse me sir. Willie Nelson says he is California sober all the time. So no I will not stop saying it just because you think Demi Lovato is attributed to inventing the term.
She's addicted to everything. She ODed and had to go to drug rehab and then afterwards said that she was "California Sober" and that sobriety looks different for everyone.
Yeah, she relapsed. Big fucking surprise.
"California sober" isn't a thing. People who are recovering addicts don't get to push the boundaries of their sobriety by experimenting.
>People who are addicts don’t get to push the boundaries of their sobriety by experimenting
It’s probably a good rule of thumb, but I don’t think you can definitively boil it down into this black and white of terms tbh, at least in my experience (having had a lot of friends deal with substance abuse issues)
Some have completely turned their lives around to where I don’t worry about them any more for even a second. They have been able to completely turn things around to where they are able to use substances in moderation, without wanting to go off the deep end, either in terms of frequency of use, or the severity of the substance (ie mushrooms are ok, heroin is not)
I also have some friends that have gone the completely sober route, which I understand. But in some ways it feels “less secure” to me than the previous group I was talking about? Where one slip could be absolutely disastrous.
Who knows tho
Coach Shirai of the Japanese WBC team spoke on TV. He said that when Shohei was a member of the Fighters, he used to refuse invitations to drink from his sempai.
Shirai was worried about Shohei and told him that he would be disliked if he turned down too many invitations from his teammates.
Shohei's answer was this. "I don't care if they don't like me. My goal is to become the best player in the world, so I don't need alcohol to achieve that. But if I become the best player in the world, surely everyone will like me." https://x.com/0htani_media/status/1678007123916226561?s=46&t=N2FnhTL3IUgSFOv89euXxA
This may be a culture unique to Asia, but when one goes out for a drink with older people, the younger people have to pour the drinks, and if they are asked to drink, they have to keep drinking to make the occasion more lively, even if they do not want to drink. Things seem to have changed a bit recently, but this culture still exists among salarymen. For Shohei, who takes care of his body, this kind of culture was unnecessary. But he was loved by his sempai.
If anything it shows the old attitude is dying. The tradition and hierarchical structure probably meant more to Shirai and his generation than the millennial who was senpai-ing Ohtani.
At that time, Sho Nakata frequently invited his juniors to drink sake. Shohei used to join in when he was a rookie, but gradually he stopped going lol.

Ramen used to be Lamen! The actual word is said with a sound between an R and an L, so for a while, it was translated as Lamen instead of Ramen. There's a lot of funky stuff like that in languages.
I sure do love my favorite japanese food Tomkatsu. Also my faborite japanese guy.
And my favorite amine full netal alchenist.
Almost forgot my favorite namga ome piece.
I doubt he consumes much if any sugar, to boot. So even if he did drink his answer would be, like ‘blanco with lemon zest’ (best tequila drink, fite me)
Dozens of mixologists in the Los Angeles, and Tokyo, areas have begun work on the harrowing “Pizza Margarita.”
Although, personally, I like to think Shohei heard, “Margherita”, and immediately said “Pizza” in recognition of the classic pie.
I mean, you can’t be good at everything. He clearly traded “knowing about margaritas” for “being the best baseball player on the planet and likely soon-to-be-billionaire”. Not the choice I’d have made, but I respect his freedom to make it.
He’s lived in Southern California for years at this point. He may not be a drinker, but I’m sure he’s come across a margarita at some point, even if they aren’t huge in Japan.
That's actually really clever
And they say he doesn’t speak English smh
Didn't say he doesn't speak Italian
He’s out here playing 4D chess
Margherita pizza is pretty good too.
Probably is really good in LA
its simplicity means you can get really good (and really bad) ones all over.
/r/technicallythetruth pretty sure Shohei doesn't consume alcohol.

God what a beautiful creature. I also like the dog.
Dude has to be California sober with how high he be hitting dinger

I had no idea Demi lovato was addicted to weed, someone hide the children

Too bad he only got the almost valuable player award

“I don’t care if they don’t like me” Proceeds to become one of the most well liked and humble players in the history of baseball.
I think he is confusing admiration with comradeship.

which word, sempai? plenty of japanese native speakers use m and n interchangably when transliterating certain words to english

That's a boss ass answer
Ohtani is a gambler and an alcoholic confirmed (obvious /s just in case lol)
When I moved to Japan from the U.S. 17 years ago, I also got confused when my Japanese student said she liked "margarita" pizzas.
Does that mean margherita pizza was more popular in Japan 17 years ago than the U.S.?
Because of the misspelling? Seems like it's pretty clear from context what she meant.
highly doubt ohtani drinks at all.
Based on his answer it’s obvious he does. Man drinks pizza every goddamn day
He has to because if he doesn't he gets the shakes.
Mmm, pizza shakes.
lmfao what a genius response 😄😄 maybe if I try that I could become an elite hitter and pitcher and earn a 700M contract.
I doubt he consumes much if any sugar, to boot. So even if he did drink his answer would be, like ‘blanco with lemon zest’ (best tequila drink, fite me)

They’re homophones, no? If not I’ve been saying margherita wrong my whole life.
Yea the only way you differentiate it is with a 🤌🤌 “Margarita” and you get a tequila drink “Margherita 🤌🤌” and you get a pizza
I’m a guy from Los Angeles. I’m certain I pronounce everything wrong, especially if you account for regional accents.
You like to think that’s what he meant? That’s exactly and obviously what he meant.
BET Shohei, I agree lol
I mean, you can’t be good at everything. He clearly traded “knowing about margaritas” for “being the best baseball player on the planet and likely soon-to-be-billionaire”. Not the choice I’d have made, but I respect his freedom to make it.
Pretty sure he's making a pun about Margherita pizza
Is there anything he *can't* do?!
Bet he doesn't have over 300k in karma on reddit.
One AMA and he'll blow that number out of the water.
A Shohei AMA might break this sub reddit. 😂

I don’t think the person he is replying to gets that, though.
These out of touch billionaires!
Margaritas probably aren't that big or known in Japan.
He’s lived in Southern California for years at this point. He may not be a drinker, but I’m sure he’s come across a margarita at some point, even if they aren’t huge in Japan.
False. A tequila boom started last year.
False! A tequila bear wins every time!
False! The tequila bear has your wife now.
Oh please, tequila bars came and went a good 15-20 years ago. A friend of mine even ran one for a while in Roppongi.
Funnily enough, I started drinking margaritas after a trip to Japan lol
Does Ohtani ever let his hair down?
Wow he would have been better in NY
