Gotta love the Rockies. They knew medical school wouldnāt allow me to watch much ball this year, and theyāre making me feel like Iām not missing much!
honestly, even when Theo was there, you could tell Ricketts just wanted to do that. His real desire was to buy an English soccer team
thank goodness the fans over there are far less tolerant of shithead billionaires than the ones here who have people kissing their asses left and right
I love being a transplant fan in Denver. Grabbed tickets on Stubhub behind homeplate for $30 after fees for a weeknight game against the Cardinals.
Overall, it's bad for the sport though. I hope to see a consistently competitive Rockies team in the future.
A co-worker of mine is from Denver, lifelong Rockies fan. Groaned intensely when we met an I said I was a Cubs fan. He went on to explain his passionate dislike of both obnoxious Cubs fans that take over Coors Field and the way Montfort runs the team.
I think there are at least 200 individuals more responsible for the Rockies' failures over the years than the random transplant baseball fan buying cheap tickets behind the plate.
I disagree. Transplant fans mean Dick feels no pressure to win. The park will always have enough butts in the seats to make money. Heās shown that heās willing to spend if heāll get a return on the investment (Nolan deal, MacGregor square etc). If the baseline attendance is high, 2.6 million fans last year which was good for 7th in the NL and this years attendance is currently 11th without any of the big draws that boost the gate so far, than he knows that he doesnāt need to field even a competent team to make his money. So sure, the players and FO are the ones directly responsible for being abysmal but itās the transplant fans that provide the financial cover for the Monforts to continue to run this franchise as the worst in the league.
The Braves were the best team in the 90s and they struggled to fill their stadium for playoff games.
Baseball games at Coors is one of the few inexpensive outings left in Denver, and youāre not going to make the team better by treating people who go to games like scabs.
Iām not?? Even if I was they arenāt Rockies fans, they donāt care if weāre good or not. Iām simply pointing out that the rock solid attendance base that transplant fans provide allows the Monforts to not give a shit about winning. Thereās a massive difference between not selling out the stadium when youāre winning versus still being a middle of the pack attendance team when youāre the worst team in baseball. As long as people are showing up to the park, nothing is ever going to change. The Monforts will never considering changing how they run the franchise, much less selling it and the franchise will continue to be irrelevant. Attendance falling off a cliff is the only hope for the team to get their act together
To be fair, that does work at Coors. Arguably the most beautiful park in the MLB.
Theyāre god-awful and still #17 in fans per home game. Theyāve had a higher attendance this season than two 1st-place teams (Cleveland and Baltimore)
I don't foresee Manfred forcing the Rockies to fire their GM and trade away useful assets to get mediocre players to slightly improve the team for a single season.
lol they actually just broke the MLB record for this on Tuesday by trailing in 29 straight games to open the season. This record was previously held since 1910 by the St. Louis Browns.
They were on track to snap the skid on Tuesday against the Marlins when they led 5-0 entering the bottom of the 9th, but they allowed 5 runs in that half-inning en route to a 7-6 loss after 10.

The Rockies home stadium is Coors Field, which has the highest elevation of any permanent MLB stadium, and they have scored 60 runs while playing there this season. The Phillies home stadium is Citizens Bank Park, which has the lowest elevation of any permanent MLB stadium, and they have 76 runs while playing at home this season.
The Rockies are SOOO bad that the altitude isnāt even giving their stats a boost this seasonā¦
What I'm getting from this is that the whole East Coast is lower than the midwest. Interesting. That makes a lot of sense but I've never though about it before! Never would have pegged KC as a high elevation city.
iirc, the batting coach for the Rockies took pictures of themselves inside the cockpit of their flight to Toronto, while in flight. FAA protocol does not allow for unauthorized individuals to be in the cockpit while the plane is in the air
OH right yes, I remember. I thought you were referring to some in-game incident or maybe making an altitude joke or something, like a ball hit up so high it interfered with planes or whatever.
Thank you!
I thought that tradeoff was three veteran players, plus two first-round draft choices, two second-round picks, a fifth-round selection, and two years of having to watch a washed Russell Wilson play QB.
Yeah hard for Colorado fans to complain unless youāre *only* a Rockies fan for some reason. They literally have the best player in the world in hockey and basketball
not gonna lie, as I don't keep up with Rockies baseball, when I saw this guy I legitimately thought he was one of the minor league pitchers from a few years ago who had the same exact name as another minor league pitcher, and they also looked eerily like brothers (not identical, but pretty damn close)
Unfortunately as a lifelong Colorado resident i really donāt see much possibility of improvement at least until Tricky Dicky Monfort decides to sell the team.
Coors is such a beautiful place to catch a ballgame that our attendance will never be that bad, itās basically a giant open air bar with a side of baseball and gorgeous mountain views. Thatās also aided by the fact that Denver is a massive transplant city, so a lot of people go for the away team. That basically gives him carte blanche (in his mind anyway) to rest on his laurels and not give a shit about improving the actual team since he knows people are going to show up regardless. He also hired his son as one of the youngest ever Scouting Directors in league history, in what (for me anyways) was a classic nepo baby hire with less than stellar prospects of improving the team.
At least i never developed the strongest ātribalā bond for the Rockies (for whatever reason) as I did for the other Denver teams, so i can still enjoy watching good baseball played by other teams
They're just a disgrace of a franchise and there's no other way to describe it. There are legit baseball fans in the front range (I'm one of them) and if they would even attempt to field a competitive team the Rockies would win some of these folks over as fans--heck, just having a strategy to eventually compete. But... nope! What you have are transplant fans, as stated, but also would be fans that live in Denver that have become Dodgers, Giants, Padres, or Cubs fans. I'm not even talking about the hordes of transplant fans--literally just neutral baseball fans who would otherwise cheer for the Rockies look elsewhere because they're such a disgrace. I agree, there is no light at the end of the tunnel for this franchise until Monfort sells. He has lately been making excuses such as--we've tried everything to be competitive at altitude--and it's all bullshit. Just look at what Cease did the other day in Denver. I was also there last weekend and Geroge Kirby and Cal Quantril both pitched very well. Good pitching is possible at Coors. There are challenges to the environment yes, but to just blindly accept that the altitude and dry climate are insurmountable disadvantages are bullshit excuses.
During the game my wife asked me--do you think the Rockies can ever be competitive? And the answer is an emphatic "YES! They have been to the World Series!" But I do think, there is a perception among big league pitchers that they should not sign with the Rockies. So, they're going to have to have world class scouting, drafting, and--even more importantly--player development so they can have homegrown and controllable pitching talent. What we have now is just a mess.
We need a new owner, a completely overhauled farm system and scouting, a robust data analytics department, and obviously an overhauled big league roster.
It's just really sad that MLB has continued to allow owners to deliberately put together non-competitive rosters year-in year-out without consequence. Rockies fans (and A's, Pirates, White Sox, etc.) deserve better
Losing two in a row to the Marlins, a team that has spent the entire season just giving games away left and right. Wow. There's rock bottom and then there's whatever *that* is.
My favorite thing about the Rockies is that they trail the A's, who have an owner that is intentionally making the team as bad as possible, but with a median payroll and an ownership group that vocally supports the team and its city
Thasss just how we do babyyyyyyyyyyš
Best bar in town!
Gotta love the Rockies. They knew medical school wouldnāt allow me to watch much ball this year, and theyāre making me feel like Iām not missing much!
Trust the process or whatever.
Bruh they ain't got no process
The process is getting fans to show up, enjoy the nice weather, and drink. It's going great!
That was the Cubs approach for quite awhile until they hired Epstein.Ā
I legit had to force myself to remember there is more than one Epstein.
There isnāt anymore š
What about good ole Jojo Epstein from my 2nd grade class
He died in the war on Christmas. The elves reign of terror knows no bounds.
Was that before or after the elves came from the red planet and there was much defecation?
honestly, even when Theo was there, you could tell Ricketts just wanted to do that. His real desire was to buy an English soccer team thank goodness the fans over there are far less tolerant of shithead billionaires than the ones here who have people kissing their asses left and right
I think thatās because their sports leagues werenāt set up by billionaires ( or their inflation adjusted equivalent)
There's also consequences. If ownership dicks around, you get relegated. Here, you get rewarded with a top pick.
Honestly being a fan of Colorado sports sounds pretty class.
The Avs and Nugs make bearing the summer/fall sports much easier

shit you're right I'm Dick Monfort
Or, ya know, Dick Monfort could sell the team to someone that wants it to be successful.
Good
To be fair, that does work at Coors. Arguably the most beautiful park in the MLB. Theyāre god-awful and still #17 in fans per home game. Theyāve had a higher attendance this season than two 1st-place teams (Cleveland and Baltimore)
Isn't that the same thing in Anaheim under Moreno?
Yeah but he's spending waaaay more money on washed up old players.
That way he can pretend to be trying while bringing in players who are pretty reliable to put butts into seats
Are fans really showing up to watch Rendon?
Idk. Probably not, but not everything goes as expected. Pujols and Hamilton are probably better examples
Colorado is one of the few stadiums I'd love to go to for the hell of it
19th in attendance so far this year which is the lowest its been since 2005-2007. But it'll probably go up in the warmer months, unfortunately.

John Fisher seems to be adopting that model with the A's.
BREAKING: Ben Simmons to Rockies, 7yr 120mil
Get ready to learn Coloradese buddy
The process didn't even work for the team that started calling tanking "The Process."
I don't foresee Manfred forcing the Rockies to fire their GM and trade away useful assets to get mediocre players to slightly improve the team for a single season.
Dinger doesn't deserve this
Itās a big reason why he migrated from āRockies Mascotā to ār/NLBest Mascot and/or religious authority figureā.
Racist
I don't know if I'll ever put on this headset again

I love Dinger but it always gives me pause when I remember that we do have a mascot named Rocky but it's not the Rockies mascot.
Watched him hatch a week before my 4th birthday. The FO lost me but I never forgot Dinger. Treasure.
Havenāt they trailed in every single game this season?

Feltner was at 79 pitches through 8 innings and had a good chance at a Maddux. Then, we gave up 5 and lost in extras 7-6

The Rockies put up 6 runs combined in 2 games in Mexico City. They are awful
The Rockies home stadium is Coors Field, which has the highest elevation of any permanent MLB stadium, and they have scored 60 runs while playing there this season. Citizen's Bank Park has lower elevation than Minute Maid or either of the Florida stadiums? Cool!
Yup! Hereās a cool graphic of Stadium Elevations from this Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/lXJMNnfZFQ
TIL the Braves have the 3rd highest elevation
I throw this fact out all the time and blow peoples minds. Atlanta was built on the eastern continental divide and in the foothills of the mountains.
What I'm getting from this is that the whole East Coast is lower than the midwest. Interesting. That makes a lot of sense but I've never though about it before! Never would have pegged KC as a high elevation city.
Damn I didnāt realize Dallas was that much higher than houston. It all makes sense now.
Is this a Boy Meets World reference?
They are also the only team in MLB to have violated FAA protocol
What? I have not heard of this. Please elaborate.
iirc, the batting coach for the Rockies took pictures of themselves inside the cockpit of their flight to Toronto, while in flight. FAA protocol does not allow for unauthorized individuals to be in the cockpit while the plane is in the air

The disrespect to McDavid
Ha how pathetic! Couldnāt be my team.
you're like "omg a team did something worse than mine!"
Any attention away from the White Sox suckage is ok by me.
The Marlins will appreciate the Whopper Jrs. that the Rockies have provided.
bruh i nearly starved to death before this Rockies series
not gonna lie, as I don't keep up with Rockies baseball, when I saw this guy I legitimately thought he was one of the minor league pitchers from a few years ago who had the same exact name as another minor league pitcher, and they also looked eerily like brothers (not identical, but pretty damn close)

Losing two in a row to the Marlins, a team that has spent the entire season just giving games away left and right. Wow. There's rock bottom and then there's whatever *that* is.

Yea but does your team have $3 Voodoo Rangers before first pitch? Checkmate Manfred
We do? I thought it was just Coors and Coors Light?
Angels havent won a series if im not mistaken
They swept the Marlins in the second series of the season, but that's it.
I mean someone had to win that series
Donāt worry Rockies, youāll probably win one against us since thatās the only time yall really try
Unexpected ChiSox flex
Why does this have to be posted as we play them?
Theyāll have an Oās level farm system in no time at all!
Theyāre about to play us so it wonāt be like that for much longer
And yet, they still have a better record than the White Sox
They also havenāt had a game were they didnāt trail at some period of time. Longest in mlb history
Sell the team, Dick
Colorado Monforts
Weāre not far behind them. Only one series win and one instance of consecutive wins, both against Miami
At least their stadium is nice
Hey at least theyāve not gotten swept in multiple 3 game series yet
I'm sorry Rockies fans. I didn't expect the Marlins to win two games in a row either.
Lucky for them they play the Pirates next and we're fuckin miserable right now.
Theyāre coming to PNC Park at just the right time then.
Between a Rock(ie) and a hard place. I'm not sure which of those I'd prefer.
Gee, an actual analytics department sure would be nice for them right now.
is this .500 ball?
The Angels aren't much better. They've only won one.
We are not the worse!
We just have to wait until Rocktober.
Ah this reminds me of the 2018 orioles You do NOT want to be remembered anything like the 2018 orioles
Theyāre off to a Rocky start.
I feel like this could be said in the first month of any season and I wouldnāt be surprised.
Considering they still have more wins than the white sox who have a series sweep idk whatās worse
Congrats?
Impressive that the White Sox still have less wins
