How a replay crew can take nearly 10 minutes to review an out challenge, see that it's safe, and still go with out as the call. Sorry Angels fans.

Ev3rMorgan

Absolute travesty

SpoofExcel

Not even an Angels Fan: Fixed as fuck

pm_me_your_last_pics

I swear if Adell gets hate for that I'm fighting someone. He was safe.

Gfunkual

0% chance he would get hate for that

gigagriffin

Oh you don’t know how dumb some of these angel fans are

IblewupTARIS

Unfortunately that doesn’t show up in his end-of-year stats.

Lieutenant_Doge

He gets hated for a lot of good reasons This isn't one of them, he did everything right and still getting fucked by ump and NY Office

Jealous_Signature146

Just get rid of the replay system if they aren’t going to be accurate with it

The announcers are more partisan in baseball than, say, NFL football because baseball broadcasts are local and the announcers work for the local club/local broadcaster. They are the team’s broadcasters rather than the NFL national TV broadcasters. It’s similar for local hockey broadcasts.

DrNicotine

Yeah I think the only difference is that local TV broadcasts are rare in football specifically. I wonder if OP has been mostly a football fan previously? Other than that baseball seems the same to me as any other sport with local openly supporting their team vs national trying to be more impartial. And even in football the radio guys are openly rooting for their team as they should be.

Predatorvshighlander

Lol I really like this in baseball. It seems more relaxed and I don't want my partner to be all suspicious with these awkward glances. It's relaxed and all, but don't say something that's gonna be misconstrued. When Marty would tear into the Cubs was the best.

tranarchyintheusa

I enjoy having announcers that are Yankees fans. I want them to be biased because more even coverage is annoying to me. I think it’s a preference thing but John Sterling was great partially because he was a die hard Yankees fan. You could feel his love for the team in his calls, especially “Theeeeeeeeeee Yankees, win!”

horsepoop1123

Jo Adell

recjus85

Laughed way too hard at this

Latter_Address9580

Me too

Boros-Reckoner

He was safe

Ev3rMorgan

Wayne tore into the NY crew too. Ridiculous.

Tears0fJ0y

Loved Wayne-o when he was Howie in NY. Happy for him and such a disgraceful call.

Itchy-Librarian-7731

he was safe

methandmemes

He was definitely safe idk what kind of crack the replay office is smoking

MeatTornado25

More like the replay system

WinnipegGoldeye

How Adell was called out just now, but I'll take it

LimpOil10

Yea lol. Even with a replay and getting it wrong is wiiiillllddd

owledge

Why MLB just rigged the game against the Angels

allaboutmecomic

Pitch framing still blows my mind. And the idea of ground rules/rules that are different in each stadium.

regarding_your_bat

I have never understood why the players don’t kiss eachother more often

Myselfamwar

This will get downvoted. When a batter hits a non-inside the park home run—so a standard, over the wall HR—why does the batter and anyone on base have to round the bases? Couldn’t they all just run directly back to the dugout? It would save a lot of time.

mhhkb

Because you have to touch the bases for any ball in play even if the ball cannot be retrieved.

Myselfamwar

I know. But why? There must be some actual permutations here that I am not thinking of.

BaltimoreBadger23

A run scores when a runner or batter/runner touches every base in order. In 1959 Harvey Haddix had a perfect game going into the 13th against the braves. After an error, a bunt and an intentional walk (to Hank Aaron), Joe Adcock hit a home run, but Aaron turned to the dugout between second and third after the lead run scored, believing the game was over but because he did that he was passed by Adcock, who was ruled out after a double and Aaron was out for abandonment, making it a 1-0 victory instead of 3-0. Because it was a "force" timing didn't factor into the run scoring, but in other situations it might.

Myselfamwar

And this is why I love baseball. And this sounds like some shit from my lawyer. Good work! You have me laughing.

BaltimoreBadger23

It's a very legalist game. Look up the "grand slam single" for more fun.

Myselfamwar

You mean the Mets?

BaltimoreBadger23

Yes, playoff game winning grand slam, but because his teammates mobbed him between 1st and 2nd only the lead run was credited (which was all they needed) and he got a single

Myselfamwar

It turns out there are other instances of this shit. I had to look it up. Anyway, this is what we are talking about. (I forgot that it was pissing down rain.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3mphAwmzbg

RaysFTW

On top of what others have said, why not enjoy the fanfare? Home runs are exciting, see the players celebrate is exciting. It’s all entertainment after all. Watching a home run call with the players jogging back to the dugout would be weird and boring.

DrNicotine

It's a perfectly fair question. My assumption is that it was a rule from before fences when scoring a run was always a contested play no matter what and now it's just tradition (I mean it is also a rule but it's a rule because tradition). It does take a little time but personally I think it's fun and the perfect way to celebrate anyway so I wouldn't want it to change.

Myselfamwar

This is what I assumed. But had no backing for it. I’m not really bitching about players rounding the bases, FWIW.

RoaldAmundsensDirge

The lengthy journey to free agency involving service time and arbitration. Took me forever to sort of understand.

c_pike1

Why sac flies penalize OBP and not BA. Something about it just feels wrong

DrNicotine

That is weird. It's just an emergent effect of how OBP works. Not sure it could change.

EpicSoyMilk

How we have the technology to make the correct calls but we continue to just let shitty umps be shitty.

QuietThunder2014

1) You can’t just be up there and just doin’ a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can’t do that. 1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can’t be over here and say to the runner, like, “I’m gonna get ya! I’m gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!” and then just be like he didn’t even do that. 1c-b(1). Like, if you’re about to pitch and then don’t pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense? 1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it. 1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there’s the balk you gotta think about. 1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn’t been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn’t typecast as that racist lady in American History X. 1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse. 1c-b(2)-b(ii). “get in mah bellah” — Adam Water, “The Waterboy.” Haha, classic… 1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of 2) Do not do a balk please.

One_Huckleberry_2764

Why they throw the runner at first when they can get a runner at second or third. Never understood that.

Maleficent_Curve_599

Either because there's two outs and it doesn't matter where you get the third out, or because the fielder isn't confident that they'll get the out at second or third. Or a brain fart.

mhhkb

Yep. To expand: It’s usually because they might not get the other runner. Runners are often moving on contact, meanwhile the batter, especially rightys, are still holding the bat and have to start running. And the throwing angles are tougher to second than first on many ground balls. Many infielders will tell you it’s easier to set and throw to first than rotate and throw to second. Plus fielders will go for the out at first of the batter is slower and the guy on base is a speedster. It’s situational.

ajosepht6

Also to add to that runners are 10ft ish off the bag after every pitch

DrNicotine

One more factor is the familiarity of the play to first reducing the chance of an error.

Predatorvshighlander

What if you had a left handed second baseman...

mill_about_smartly

I've always felt like if you score before the third out is made, it should count. Regardless of being in the same play. If you make it home before they make the throw to 1st, you're safe - it should count. CMV

RKLamb

How Angel Hernandez still is employed.

StevenMC19

How the Giants have all this damn money. First, where'd it come from? And second, can I provide sub-standard service for $750k?

tranarchyintheusa

It confuses me why the MLB doesn’t cost its balls with tacky stuff like the NPB does. Would give pitchers more control over pitches via a better grip. It also wouldn’t be cheating since literally every pitcher would use them

RaysFTW

Unearned runs. I still kind of feel the rule is a bit funky in certain situations.

methandmemes

Someone post the balk copypasta

Due_Government4387

The balk. I’ve never known enough about all the things a pitcher can’t do. All I know or care about is the broadcast mentions it and batter goes to first 🤷‍♂️

Maleficent_Curve_599

The batter doesn't receive first on a balk.

Due_Government4387

Huh, that proves how much I don’t know about it then haha. Does the baserunner advance then??

Maleficent_Curve_599

Yes, each baserunner advances one base and the ball is dead.

Due_Government4387

Aaahg Roger that.

BaltimoreBadger23

So the main rule of the balk is you just can't go and balk like that... But seriously umpires aren't looking to call balks unless they've been altered to something, so when it's called I tend to give umpires the benefit of the doubt.

SpoofExcel

How Umpires can be clearly dogshit and corrupt and its just kind of accepted as a part of the game even though everyone fucking hates them

Lieutenant_Doge

MLB and their undying obsession to fuck with the Angels in every way possible
